❝ he's been in there for half an hour. we can't get him to talk. kid is in shock. can't say i blame him. ❞

the events are already on repeat in his head. what could he have done differently? what was the girl's mother going to say? connor had one job: save the hostage at all costs. and he'd failed. god damn it, he tried. he leapt for the girl as she was pulled over the edge of the roof. their hands even grazed. but he was too late. connor landed harshly on his chest, his front half hanging over the edge. he watched them fall. watched them land.

"connor! are you okay?" a familiar voice asks. but he can't speak. he can't move. hank has to physically pull him back onto the roof. "connor. hey. talk to me." nothing.

they'd trusted him. connor was trained in negotiation, and he was damn good at it. he didn't fail - it just didn't happen. why now? why this case? was he going to be fired? charged with manslaughter?

it's another five minutes before connor is able to stumble to his feet. and when he does, he dashes to a lower floor with a private, single-stall bathroom. the second the door is locked he collapses. it's hard to breathe. he rests his back against the wall, hands grasping at the side of the toilet bowl. he feels like he's going to throw up, or pass out, or both.

connor closes his eyes - tries to relax - but all he can see, all he can hear is little emma. what feels like seconds has been twenty minutes. then thirty. hank has been banging on the door for a majority of that time. he tunes it out. finally, the sound of a small metal key, followed by the door creaking open. connor buries his head in his hands and holds his breath. please, please go away.

wren and his family abstained from the holy war for at least a hundred years. they refused to participate in something that they felt they had no hand in. wren was sucked into the war in a brutal manner. his parents and only sister were slaughtered after refusing to join the old gods in their conquest to overtake the world.

wren, in his rage, immediately set off to fight. he rose through the ranks quickly, and this led to him being a target. he was captured some fifty years into his time in the war.

being captured led to torture.... i won't go into detail about it here, but he never broke. never sold his friends down the river.

wren was held hostage for a thousand years. many of these years were spent in total isolation due to the war being ended. his brethren searched endlessly for him but no one could ever find him. they gave up, eventually, assuming that he was dead.

     today had been hell from the start. nearly half of detroit’s crew was on the scene of a multi-car pileup. there had to be at least eight or nine of them, injuries ranging from minor scrapes to immediate fatalities, and everything in between. the third or fourth ambulance is departing when eli’s phone starts buzzing in his pocket. he ignores it, initially. but it rings a second time. then a third. no spam call would do that, and adam knew better than to call more than once unless it was an emergency. it’s TK. 

    wait. he’d heard about this. a couple of officers left the scene about an hour ago, they’d needed back-up with a hostage situation. there were several already wounded, and the station was NOTORIOUS for reaching out to off-duty first responders before contacting other areas. TK was probably on that scene. and now he was calling, several times. eli tries his number back, but nothing. a second time — still nothing. his stomach drops. 

     ❝ anyone heard from TK? ❞ called out to a group of coworkers. negative. he pulls out his radio, calls to officer reyes — he’d been removed from this scene to deal with the hostage scenario. ❝ have you seen TK? he’s trying to get ahold of me. ❞ ‘he was with a patient when i left.’ ❝ on clifton road? with the shooting? ❞

    it doesn’t take long for eli to piece together what’s going on. it’s another five or ten minutes before he’s convinced one of their coworkers, chris, that someone needs to go check on him. chris agrees to drive the ambulance while eli continues trying to get in touch with TK. still nothing. he hopes he’s overreacting, that TK is just busy. but when they pull up to a seemingly empty lot, his stomach twists. 

    he finds TK half-bent over a table. there’s blood on his head and both of his hands. ❝ hey! ❞ eli calls out, arms wrapping around his friend’s waist. ❝ TK. what the hell happened? hey. ❞ he feels a hug back, initially, but he’s quickly getting heavier. going more and more limp. TK is easily half a foot taller than him, and probably fifty pounds heavier.  ❝ stay with me, buddy. i got you. come on, let’s sit you down. ❞
