[ID: fanart of Paige from the podcast The Silt Verses. she's a woman with brown skin and long dark hair, and she's in the process of turning into a tree- her torso emerges from a trunk, and her limbs stretch out and separate into limbs. she's looking up, eyes closed and peaceful, with flowers in her hair. the sun behind her head forms the impression of a halo. The Silt Verses' very final QnA is (partly) here...
Tumblr media
It was so good we had to split it in two. And...so long, more importantly. So long we had to split it in two.
Yes, the first half of our absolutely epic four-hour final-season QnA has arrived, with fan questions on subjects from the sublime to the very, very silly (including our cast members' favourite line from the show, which we now understand was 'Get Shrimped', a line which was definitely and canonically said during the show The Silt Verses and which they didn't just make up.)
Hosted by Méabh de Brún, with B. Narr, Muna Hussen, Jon Ware, Lucille Valentine, Jimmie Yamaguchi, Sarah Griffin and Marta da Silva (with a guest appearance by H.R. Owen).
Hope you enjoy the listen - part two is just around the corner.

Nvm yall Méabh and B gave the perfect elevator pitch using this forever now
[Image ID: A screenshot of a q&a transcript. It reads:
"MÉABH: it's like when you try and recommend this podcast, it's like, “OK, so there's this river god. Crabs. But also The Human Condition.”
B.: Yes, what if the Human Condition also just had a lot of crustacean overtones?
MÉABH: Yeah, crab nuke! OK. All right now. Red asks,"
End ID]
The Silt Verses is one of my all time favorite works of fiction but it is impossible to recommend to anyone. "Yeah you should listen to this podcast. No not that kind of podcast. Think like an audio book but with a full cast and action scenes and stuff. What's it about? Um well it's complicated. Gods are real and they are worshipped with human sacrifice but the sacrifices don't exactly die become grotesque semi human vessels. Yeah and the economy is built on this human sacrifice. It's a metaphor for capitalism. Don't worry if you don't get it it's kind of slow burn you'll figure it out. Oh and the whole first season kind of sounds like shit. Where are you going?"

how scary is the silt verses? i want to get into it bc you're saying so much good stuff about it, but i had to stop listening to the magnus archives because it was keeping me up at night :(
hmmmmmmmmmmm I have to think about this a little bit, because scariness in podcasts doesn't bother me much so it's entirely possible for there to be Some Great Horror I'm just not thinking of.
Relative to TMA! I'd say The Silt Verses horror elements are less frequent than TMA, considering the TMA format is to tell One Fucked Up Story every single episode. The Silt Verses does not have that format so it can go episodes at a time digging through the narrative.
But it does have horrific things that pop up which could belong to a TMA episode. A Deer That's Wrong, fishermen sewn together into a fucked-up boat thing, whatever body-horror Val does to people. I do think the flavor is different from TMA. A lot of those TMA horrors are from the perspective of normal civilians, unwillingly subjected to A Horror. In TSV, most everyone encountering The Horrors is ready to start punching. But still like... The Horrors ARE very much there, and part of it.
Though, there is a flavor of horror in TSV which I don't think is very prevalent in TMA, which is this "you're about to be killed and everyone in society is okay with this, actually" style of horror. There's a plot point where a company which is, essentially, going through lay-offs, is allowed to kill the people they're letting go as part of a sacrifice. And the POV character (who is not being laid off) is experiencing this whole thing going "this surely can't be right. they surely can't?" But they do, and she's complicit.
So... yes...! TSV is scary! But it's a kind of scary which is more baked into the society the characters are navigating, vs. the TMA-style "spend every episode one a different Horror Incident that happened"

my dealer: got some straight gas 🔥😛 this strain is called “the silt verses q&a part 1” 😳 you’ll be zonked out of your gourd 💯
me: yeah whatever. I don’t feel shit.
5 minutes later: dude I swear Sibling 'Perple' Rane escaped Faulkner's murder attempt and swam away to open a beachfront banana daiquiri bar
my friend Lucille Valentine pacing: Paige and Hayward were having canonical weird sex

SERIES of novels? MORE than ONE? It's time to get annoying again.
If they're able to expand the world even MORE... I'm done for. We're going to be able to see their thoughts, we're going to get even MORE personal.
Getting inside Paige's and Carpenter's head might actually kill me (/pos).

Evidence that The Silt Verses is impossible to recommend to anybody: I read the synopsis long before I started actually listening, probably because it was being advertised on some other podcast feed? And that was when I was at a point where I actually actively looked for audio dramas to listen to, and yet I read the summary and was like "Hm that sounds like a weird buddy horror/comedy probably too silly for my tastes." It took listening to and loving I Am in Eskew for me to actually give it a shot. Fast forward several months and it's the greatest thing I've ever listened to and a permanent fixture in my psyche. I know I said it's impossible to recommend but I'm going to recommend it anyway like seriously even if you think you won't like it, if you like horror and weird fantasy and socio-economic critique and complex characters you will love it. Pspsps you want to listen to the silt verses so badddd
