the aromantic love between Carpenter and Faulkner delights me. so much of what they do draws on classic tragic romance, but because they declare their relationship as familial, it refuses to turn romantic.

when Faulkner thinks Carpenter is dead and quickly makes a plan to kill himself, that's Romeo holding the poison at Juliet's grave. when Faulkner looks up at (a hallucination of) Carpenter's back as she walks away from him, it's an inversion of Orpheus and Eurydice. Faulkner dies in water and Carpenter is shot under a willow tree - the two things present at the death of Ophelia. Paige even compares them to bickering parents while she's kidnapped, not to mention the symbolism between Faulkner and the Promised Bride - the white dress on the bed and his white gown, the dead lover killed in battle in Shrue's retelling and him believing Carpenter died in combat multiple times - it's romance all the way down.

even the things they say could be seen as romantic - "it's different if it's you", "hopelessly and helplessly entangled", the whole scene in season one where they confess that they'd thought about killing the other - if they were any other duo of characters they would be prime enemies to lovers material.

and yet, because it's them, it never turns to romance. that is not the term for the love they feel. Faulkner identified that he wanted Carpenter to be his sister, and she reciprocated. it was a genuine love confession, but one devoid of romance. this is a mutual relationship of sibling love, and the intent of that renders any romantic coding null.

and i love it so much. i know what it's like to be deeply affectionate toward someone, behaving in a seemingly romantic way around them, when my feelings are completely platonic and will never turn to romance. and i see that reflected in these characters. Carpenter can talk about how they're fully entangled in each other, never to be separated, and Faulkner can put on his display of devotion to her, and it will never be romantic because it's them. and i feel that deeply in my soul.

it must be said that i simply love to watch a character destroy all their relationships in an attempt to get what they think they want only to achieve their goals and be lonelier and more depressed than ever. and to realize they can never go back and are trapped at the top of the hill playing their part. its the dream you never wake up from!!

I don't get into media that often as an adult because I no longer have the 14-year-old naivety that lets Naruto blow my mind. I still absolutely like getting into media! But my bar is significantly higher. And even the things I genuinely enjoy come with a sort of measured assessment of what areas are maybe a little weak in my opinion, or what aspects don't completely appeal to me.

So actually, I a little bit don't know what to do with myself over the fact that The Silt Verses is just so good. I don't have my usual mental folder of measured critiques. Like at most maybe a one-off plotline here or there that I was only mildly interested in. But that's nothing when I mean like, assessing the over-arching characters, their development, their self-driven character motivation, the evolving dynamics between them, the intricacies of the plot, the way the world breathes, the horrible and ironic and compelling concepts that come to life here, the incredible voice acting, the sound production, the astounding writing--the untouchable quality of the writing.

When I say "The Silt Verses gets better the longer it goes" that's because it's so good at developing its characters and their dynamics and the plot and the stakes. Something exceptional should get better the longer it goes if it's doing these things well.

I listen while cooking and time and time again I need to stop what I'm doing to just... soak in what I've heard. I rewind lines. I'm on episode 40 and every single ongoing character plot compels me. I'm invested in everyone. The dimension to each of the main characters is undoing me. I listen and I go "I cannot imagine writing something this good." What do I do with this. I don't know.
