Millet vs. Rice: Which Is Better for Your Health?
When it comes to choosing grains for a healthy diet, many are left debating between millet and rice. Both are staple foods in various cultures and offer unique health benefits. But which one is better for your health? Letā€™s compare the nutritional value and health benefits of millet and rice to help you make an informed choice.
Nutritional Comparison: Millet vs. Rice
Millet is a group of small-seeded grains known for being nutrient-dense and highly versatile. It is rich in fiber, vitamins, and minerals such as magnesium, phosphorus, and iron. Millet is a gluten-free grain, making it an excellent option for those with gluten intolerance or celiac disease. Its high fiber content aids digestion and helps to manage weight by promoting satiety.
Rice, particularly white rice, is a refined grain commonly consumed worldwide. While it is easy to digest and a quick source of energy due to its high carbohydrate content, it lacks the fiber and essential nutrients found in whole grains like millet.
Tumblr media
Health Benefits of Millet
Supports Digestive Health: Millet is packed with fiber, which helps regulate bowel movements and prevent constipation. It promotes a healthy gut microbiome, essential for overall well-being.
Controls Blood Sugar Levels: The low glycemic index (GI) of millet means it releases sugar slowly into the bloodstream, preventing spikes in blood sugar. This makes it ideal for people with diabetes or those trying to manage their blood sugar levels.
Rich in Antioxidants: Millet contains antioxidants like phenolic compounds, which protect the body from oxidative stress and inflammation. These antioxidants may reduce the risk of chronic diseases such as heart disease and cancer.
Supports Heart Health: Magnesium and potassium in millet help lower blood pressure and improve heart function. The high fiber content further reduces cholesterol levels, promoting cardiovascular health.
Which Is Better for Your Health?
In the debate between millet and rice, millet often comes out on top for its higher nutritional value. It is packed with fiber, essential vitamins, and minerals, offering more health benefits compared to white rice. For those focusing on weight management, blood sugar control, or digestive health, millet is a superior choice.
Haritha Foods: A Great Choice for Millet Products

ten habits to adopt for a beautiful life šŸ’
Tumblr media Tumblr media
+ curated shopping: rather than over-consume in fast fashion and trends, buy fewer, high-quality items. frequent vintage shops, boutiques, or markets where you can find unique, timeless pieces.
+ focus on wellness and exercise: consider activities that are beneficial for the body and calming for the mind, such as yoga, pilates, or long walks in nature. choose activities that allow you to connect with your surroundings and maintain balance.
+ mindful eating: prioritise healthy, whole foods and cooking meals from scratch. organic produce, artisanal products, and perhaps even locally sourced ingredients could be staples in your kitchen. eating is a mindful practice, enjoyed at a leisurely pace.
+ cultural engagement: regularly visit museums, art galleries, and theatres, or participate in cultural events that inspire and enrich their creative spirit. value learning and exposure to the arts as a way to keep life vibrant and intellectually stimulating.
+ reading and continuous learning: develop a well-curated collection of books, including classic literature, philosophy, and art, and dedicate time regularly to reading and reflecting on what you've learned.
+ minimalist technology approach: stay up-to-date with necessary technology, but maintain a minimalist approach to its use. limit screen time, avoid social media distractions, and instead prioritise face-to-face interactions or hands-on activities.
+ intentional socialising: carefully cultivate your social life, with a focus on deep, meaningful connections rather than frequent, casual interactions. you likely enjoy hosting intimate gatherings at home, where you can experience conversation, ambiance, and connection.

Personally I think the medical profession should stop asking "what normal God-made nutritious foods that have been staples of the human diet for 5,000+ years do people need to completely cut out of their diet to be healthy" and start asking "how do we fix what's making people's body not tolerate wheat"

1. Four new cheetah cubs born in Saudi Arabia after 40 years of extinction
Tumblr media
ā€œ[T]he discovery of mummified cheetahs in caves [ā€¦] which ranged in age from 4,000 to as recent as 120 years, proved that the animals [ā€¦] once called [Saudi Arabia] home. The realisation kick-started the countryā€™s Cheetah Conservation Program to bring back the cats to their historic Arabian range. [ā€¦] Dr Mohammed Qurban, CEO of the NCW, said: [ā€¦] ā€œThis motivates us to continue our efforts to restore and reintroduce cheetahs, guided by an integrated strategy designed in accordance with best international practices.ā€ā€
2. In sub-Saharan Africa, ā€˜forgottenā€™ foods could boost climate resilience, nutrition
Tumblr media
ā€œ[A study published in PNAS] examined ā€œforgottenā€ crops that may help make sub-Saharan food systems more resilient, and more nutritious, as climate change makes it harder to grow [current staple crops.] [ā€¦ The study identified 138 indigenous] food crops that were ā€œrelatively underresearched, underutilized, or underpromoted in an African context,ā€ but which have the nutrient content and growing stability to support healthy diets and local economies in the region. [ā€¦] In Eswatini, van Zonneveld and the World Vegetable Center are working with schools to introduce hardy, underutilized vegetables to their gardens, which have typically only grown beans and maize.ā€
3. Here's how $4 billion in government money is being spent to reduce climate pollution
Tumblr media
ā€œ[New Orleans was awarded] nearly $50 million to help pay for installing solar on low to middle income homes [ā€¦ and] plans to green up underserved areas with trees and build out its lackluster bike lane system to provide an alternative to cars. [ā€¦] In Utah, $75 million will fund several measures from expanding electric vehicles to reducing methane emissions from oil and gas production. [ā€¦ A] coalition of states led by North Carolina will look to store carbon in lands used for agriculture as well as natural places like wetlands, with more than $400 million. [ā€¦ This funding is] ā€œproviding investments in communities, new jobs, cost savings for everyday Americans, improved air quality, ā€¦ better health outcomes.ā€ā€
4. From doom scrolling to hope scrolling: this weekā€™s big Democratic vibe shift
Tumblr media
ā€œ[Democrats] have been on an emotional rollercoaster for the past few weeks: from grim determination as Biden fought to hang on to his push for a second term, to outright exuberance after he stepped aside and Harris launched her campaign. [ā€¦] In less than a week, the Harris campaign raised record-breaking sums and signed up more than 100,000 new volunteers[ā€¦.] This honeymoon phase will end, said Democratic strategist Guy Cecil, warning the election will be a close race, despite this newfound exuberance in his party. [ā€¦ But v]oters are saying they are excited to vote for Harris and not just against Trump. Thatā€™s new.ā€
5. Biodegradable luminescent polymers show promise for reducing electronic waste
Tumblr media
ā€œ[A team of scientists discovered that a certain] chemical enables the recycling of [luminescent polymers] while maintaining high light-emitting functions. [ā€¦] At the end of life, this new polymer can be degraded under either mild acidic conditions (near the pH of stomach acid) or relatively low heat treatment (> 410 F). The resulting materials can be isolated and remade into new materials for future applications. [ā€¦] The researchers predict this new polymer can be applied to existing technologies, such as displays and medical imaging, and enable new applications [ā€¦] such as cell phones and computer screens with continued testing.ā€
6. Worldā€™s Biggest Dam Removal Project to Open 420 Miles of Salmon Habitat this Fall
Tumblr media
ā€œReconnecting the river will help salmon and steelhead populations survive a warming climate and [natural disastersā€¦.] In the long term, dam removal will significantly improve water quality in the Klamath. ā€œAlgae problems in the reservoirs behind the dams were so bad that the water was dangerous for contact [ā€¦] and not drinkable,ā€ says Fluvial Geomorphologist Brian Cluer. [ā€¦ The project] will begin to reverse decades of habitat degradation, allow threatened salmon species to be resilient in the face of climate change, and restore tribal connections to their traditional food source.ā€
7. Biden-Harris Administration Awards $45.1 Million to Expand Mental Health and Substance Use Services Across the Lifespan
ā€œā€œBe it fostering wellness in young people, caring for the unhoused, facilitating treatment and more, this funding directly supports the needs of our neighbors,ā€ said HHS Secretary Xavier Becerra. [The funding also supports] recovery and reentry services to adults in the criminal justice system who have a substance use disorder[ā€¦ and clinics which] serve anyone who asks for help for mental health or substance use, regardless of their ability to pay.ā€
8. The Worldā€™s Rarest Crow Will Soon Fly Free on Maui
Tumblr media
ā€œ[ā€¦ In] the latest attempt to establish a wild crow population, biologists will investigate if this species can thrive on Maui, an island where it may have never lived before. Translocations outside of a speciesā€™ known historical range are rare in conservation work, but for a bird on the brink of extinction, itā€™s a necessary experiment: Scientists believe the crows will be safer from predators in a new localeā€”a main reason that past reintroduction attempts failed. [ā€¦] As the release date approaches, the crows have already undergone extensive preparation for life in the wild. [ā€¦] ā€œWe try to give them the respect that you would give if you were caring for someoneā€™s elder.ā€ā€
9. An optimistā€™s guide to the EV battery mining challenge
ā€œā€œBattery minerals have a tremendous benefit over oil, and thatā€™s that you can reuse them.ā€ [ā€¦ T]he reportā€™s authors found thereā€™s evidence to suggest that [improvements in technology] and recycling have already helped limit demand for battery minerals in spite of this rapid growth ā€” and that further improvements can reduce it even more. [ā€¦ They] envision a scenario in which new mining for battery materials can basically stop by 2050, as battery recycling meets demand. In this fully realized circular battery economy, the world must extract a total of 125 million tons of battery minerals ā€” a sum that, while hefty, is actually 17 times smaller than the oil currently harvested every year to fuel road transport.ā€
10. Peekaboo! A baby tree kangaroo debuts at the Bronx Zoo
Tumblr media
ā€œThe tiny Matschieā€™s tree kangaroo [ā€¦] was the third of its kind born at the Bronx Zoo since 2008. [ā€¦ A] Bronx Zoo spokesperson said that the kangaroo's birth was significant for the network of zoos that aims to preserve genetic diversity among endangered animals. "It's a small population and because of that births are not very common," said Jessica Moody, curator of primates and small mammals at the Bronx Zoo[, ā€¦] adding that baby tree kangaroos are ā€œpossibly one of the cutest animals to have ever lived. They look like stuffed animals, it's amazing.ā€ā€

TEEN IN A TIM BURTON MOVIE DIET šŸ¦“šŸŒ«ļø
(inspired by @honeysugarfree)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
.ĖšāŠ¹.šŸŽƒā‚ŠĖšš–¦¹ā‹†
You wake up with one thing on your mind: going out for a walk in the woods. But you canā€™t. Youā€™re a teenager who has school, and your parents would kill you if you skipped school.
Itā€™s too early to eat anything. Pass the time playing with your cat or simply reading by the window as the sun rises.
Tumblr media
School is so boring when all youā€™re craving is a nice cup of warm soup or hot chocolate prepared by your mum. Whatever, youā€™ll suffer in silence and snack on whatever fruits you threw into your bag this morning.āœ§Ė–Ā°.ā˜¾
For lunch, youā€™ll have leftovers from yesterday. roasted/baked/boiled veggies accompanied by rice or wheat. you donā€™t eat it all; itā€™s cold, and not that nice at allā€¦ Maybe your parents packed you a sandwich instead? make sure you donā€™t eat the crusts, though. theyā€™re the worst part.
If youā€™re lucky, you mightā€™ve even added one of your bakes as dessert (low cal pastry/cookie), or a small yoghurt. if you didnā€™t, donā€™t fret. your parent didnā€™t forget to include a fruit or veggie for health.
Tumblr media
(Ā¬ Ā“ą½€` )Ā¬
Back home at last ā€” not before you went on a small walk, though. your parents were worried about where youā€™d gone off too again, and youā€™re greeted by a warm broth/soup, or some more baked veggies.
you donā€™t finish your plate unless your walk was very tiring. youā€™re too eager to finish that book you started!
Once in a while, you might be allowed a piece of cake or some hot chocolate. not everyday, though. that would be bad for your teeth!
End the day with a cup of tea, reading under a warm blanket with a piece of your favourite chocolate or sweet. šŸ‚ā˜•ļøšŸˆā€ā¬›
Tumblr media
MEAL IDEAS I LOVE:
Chickpeas in tomato sauce with rice
Whole bread sandwich without the crust: tomato, cheese and cucumber (ham if you want, iā€™m vegetarian c:)
Ratatouille or Shakshuka with wheat/bulgur
Apple sauce cookies (i can share a good recipe if you want)
Pasta/zucchini gratin
Lasagna (spinach or veggies with tomato sauce - or mince, once again, iā€™m vegetarian)
potatoes (sweet is even better) with broccoli
Mushrooms with bread
Tomato salad (vinegar, herbs, olive oil)
Lentil/corn cakes with cream cheese
Pumpkin pie
Vegetable broth (or chicken) with vegetable dices
Potato soup
Tomato orzo soup
Mashed potatoes with lentils
Lentil soup
Beetroot (itā€™s so good even on it own)
REMEMBER!
You always prefer ā€˜halloweenā€™ themed pastries ā€” involving apples, pumpkin, carrotsā€¦
Eating isnā€™t a bother, youā€™re just a slow eater. donā€™t hesitate to share your love for sweets, while keeping consummation low.
You get tired of veggies so much! never finish a meal you donā€™t like.
Your favourite candy is liquorice, and most halloween themed ones like acorn or hard candy
Keep the chocolate low. itā€™s too heavy and nauseating!
If you must, have a piece of nutella/peanut butter and jelly toast, oats, or milk with fruits in the morning. i promise itā€™s much better than those ā€˜healthyā€™ alternatives (makes you satisfies and low calorie if you only have one)
No crisps ā€” theyā€™re too oily and dirty your books. Pop corn is so much better (and lower in cols) ā€” caramel or pumpkin spice is a staple!
Cinnamon on applesā€¦ the best treat!
If you ever eat out with family, eat only a third of the meal and get the rest to pack. itā€™s so good you want to make it last!!
Bake and cook as much as you can! This will make your parents understand what you like, and not push to make you eat those gross overly fat foods.
Try to stay under 1,000 kcals, but donā€™t count calories obsessively. keep portions small and always leave a third of your plate.
Have fun!
(iā€™ll make a moodboard with meals etc, i hope you enjoy!)

Kangkong (Water Spinach) with Bacon
I was thrilled to see this at the Asian grocery and promptly grabbed it because I was craving a healthy supper choice. This green veggie was a staple of my childhood. In our backyard, my father planted this particular veggie. Cooking oil, garlic, onions, vinegar, and soy sauce are used to sautƩ it. This is a fantastic main course or side dish. It's a terrific vegetarian recipe even without the bacon, but I decided to add some. A tasty, fresh dish that fulfilled my need.

healthy eating as a student
!!never say that healthy eating is unachievable for students. this is a horrible mindset that will no doubt affirm the problem.
healthy eating is important for several reasons, especially to maintain high levels of energy, focus, and overall well-being. first, it supports physical health by providing sustained energy, boosting the immune system, and aiding in weight management. nutritious foods rich in vitamins and minerals strengthen the immune system, helping to fend off common illnesses. a balanced diet also ensures steady energy levels throughout the day, preventing the mid-afternoon crashes often caused by sugary snacks or processed foods.
academically, students who eat well are likely to see enhanced focus, better grades, and consistent energy levels. balanced meals supply a steady flow of glucose to the brain, which is essential for maintaining alertness and concentration during classes and study sessions. a nutritious diet supports cognitive processes, leading to improved academic performance and outcomes.
you cannot live off of two-minute noodles.
now, here are some hacks and strategies to make healthy eating more achievable:
planning and prep
meal planning: take some time each week to plan your meals. this helps you make thoughtful choices and avoid last-minute unhealthy options.
meal planning with roommates: if you live with roommates, organizing a meal plan together can be a fantastic way to share responsibilities and ensure everyone eats healthily. take turns cooking meals, or have a weekly cook-off where each person prepares a nutritious dish.
grocery list: make a list of healthy staples and stick to it when shopping. this can include fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, whole grains, and healthy fats.
batch cooking: prepare meals in bulk on weekends or free days. store them in portioned containers for easy access throughout the week.
healthy snacks: keep healthy snacks like nuts, yogurt, fruit, or cut veggies on hand to avoid reaching for junk food.
budget-friendly options
buy in bulk: items like grains, beans, and frozen vegetables can be bought in bulk and stored for long periods.
seasonal produce: opt for fruits and vegetables that are in season as they are often cheaper and more nutritious.
generic brands: don't shy away from store-brand products; they are often cheaper and just as good in quality.
easy and quick meals
stir-fries: quick to make and customizable with any veggies and proteins you like.
salads: easy to prepare with fresh ingredients. you can add a variety of toppings like nuts, seeds, lean meats, and beans.
smoothies: blend fruits, vegetables, and a protein source like yogurt or milk for a quick and nutritious meal.
oatmeal: a great breakfast option that can be topped with fruits, nuts, and seeds.
pre-made healthy options: utilize pre-made healthy options like salad packs or pre-cut veggies to save time. these can be a lifesaver on busy days when you need a quick and nutritious meal.
utilizing campus resources
dining hall options: if you're looking for healthier options, check out your dining hall. many campuses offer salad bars, whole grain options, and lean proteins.
nutrition counseling: some universities offer nutrition counseling services that can help you develop a personalized eating plan.
i hope this was helpful, and that you take something away from the post! šŸ«¶nene
