Serafina is the second daughter of a noble house in Baldur’s Gate’s Upper City. Her older sister Samara is the heir of the house, making Serafina the spare child, destined to be wed for whatever cause her Mother decides (money, power, favors).

Since her family’s rise to wealth and power, they have served as Warlock’s to the Queen of Air and Darkness, the Winter Queen, and Titania’s sister. They operate as her agents in the material plane in exchange for the powers that help keep them at the top of society. The family has a tendency to produce female children, especially the firstborn, so Serafina’s Mother is the current Matriarch of the House. 

Serafina’s Father was a Moon Elf from Elturel. The marriage was an arranged one, and Serafina’s Father cared neither for his wife nor children, ignoring them to indulge in the luxurious lifestyle his marriage afforded him. Serafina cannot speak or read elvish and is, in fact, very curious about elven trance. The family often marries elves to bring their natural magic to the bloodline as they believe it makes them better Warlocks. Her Mother was unbothered by her husband’s inattention, two healthy births meant he served his purpose. 

From a young age, it was emphasized to Serafina that power and privilege were the most important things in life, and you had to be ruthless to get and keep them. Despite early attempts to live up to her Mother’s vision for her, young Sera couldn’t bring herself to be that cold person. She was often punished severely for her inability to do so. Due to her non-compliance, she was kept close to home, only allowed to socialize with other, approved nobles, and never allowed in the Lower City. Most of the time, the family Garden’s were the furthest she was allowed to wander. 

At 18, she attempted to run away with a young nobleman she had started an affair with, their moments stolen whenever they were able to meet through the proper social functions. The two planned to live a life adventuring around Faerun. One day, Her Mother had forced her to watch as she punished a servant for theft and in her horror, Sera rushed her bid for freedom. The two were soon caught by their families and never allowed to see one another again.

For months, Sera was kept locked in her bedroom, cut off from the world. The family manor was always cold and dark, as though it were a conduit for the energies of the Winter Court. And in this seemingly endless misery, Sera found a dagger she had hidden away and attempted to take her own life. 

The effort was technically a success, and Sera died in a pool of blood in her own bed. Only to awaken the next evening, a necromancer’s foul art used to revive her. After that time, she fell into a numbness and depression that led her to become the child her Mother wanted. Cold and cruel, she served the family’s interest as she was ordered. With her new obedience to her Mother, she was given new freedom she exploited. Often she could be found with a gang of other noble children, tormenting servants, drinking, and harassing any common folk they came across in the Upper City. 

During this time, Sera still took refuge in the gardens she loved, fighting the conflict about the person she was coming. One day she met a new gardener, a Tiefling named Ophelia. It was love at first for Sera and she was desperate to make the other woman fall in love with her too. Ophelia was kind and good though, and wanted nothing to do with Sera until she changed her ways. Gradually, she began to distance herself from her court of noble brats, and find herself again. And Ophelia began to return her affection. 

All too soon though came the night of Samara’s wedding. She was wed to a cousin of the infamous Vanthampur family. At the grand feast and ball to celebrate the occasion, Sera’s Mother informed her that she too would soon celebrate her marriage, to Cazador Szarr. Cazador was an associate of her Mother’s and Sera sensed something wrong and awful about him. That night, he had loaned the family his servants for an evening, among them a pale, white-haired Elf that Sera barely noticed. In the morning, Ophelia had disappeared, and Sera would never hear from her again. 

Months later, Cazador hosted a ball to formally meet his betrothed. In deepest misery Sera attended, the atmosphere full of a hungry evil causing her to hold back panicked tears. She didn’t see the same servants as at her sister’s wedding, the pale Elf included, staring with wicked glee at her predicament. The ball lasted until sun rise, Sera being forced to dance over and over again with her husband to be. 

That morning, as the dawn lit the gardens, Sera stood among the same flowers that had witnessed her love for Ophelia, and wept. There was nothing she could do, even if she tried to die again, her Mother would revive her. It was then that Titania herself appeared to her, offering a deal. She could leave her family, pledge herself as Titania’s Warlock, and have her freedom. Titania would cast a Fey glamour over her, causing all who knew her to forget her, but she could never speak of her past, lest the glamour be broken. She could leave Baldur’s Gate and live a life of adventure, look for Ophelia even. All Titania asked in return was that she return to the city one day to raise a house up in Titania’s service, just as her current house served the Winter Queen. 

She accepted, and was whisked away to the Feywild to see Titania’s kingdom and receive her powers. There she also pledged to never forget the example of Ophelia, who strove with intention to be kind and good to all people. Days passed in Baldur’s Gate and she was returned with a pouch of gold in a rented room in Wyrm’s Crossing. Ready to leave the city and start a new life, she left the Inn, only for everything to go dark. When next she woke, she was on the Mindflayer ship. 

Sera tried to see the best in all her companions, even if some of them were easier to get along with than others. Karlach and Wyll were dear friends from the moment they. Gale and her grew close, despite his yearning for her. Other’s took some time. 

Although initially Sera thought of Astarion as the most beautiful man she’d ever seen, his prickly nature put her off and she resigned that not all of them would be her friends. When he attempted to bite her though, she was moved by compassion when she looked into his mind. It hadn’t been intentional, she was genuinely a bit afraid of him at the moment, but she did decide to help after seeing it. 

As Astarion warmed to Sera, her feelings for him softened. When he propositioned her though, she was under no delusion he meant all those pretty words. After all his lewd comments, she figured he was just looking for some fun on the road, and it was the sort of thing that her Mother would hate. Fucking one of Cazador’s lowly Spawn. 

Despite her acknowledgement that Astarion was using her, Sera began to fall for him. He was fun, and she liked his wit, and the little bit of danger about him. But she also saw how hard he was trying to make his life his own, a striving they shared. And she saw the moments where he was, even against his own claims, a good person.

When he finally confessed what he had done, it felt like her heart was being ripped out, but she saw how afraid he was at that moment. She chose to keep loving him, to give their relationship another chance. As their relationship grew, Astarion saw more of the real Sera, and the suffering she hid. He tried to be a better partner, to be someone she could lean on, like he leaned on her. 

When the Netherbrain fell, and Astarion began to burn, Sera was devastated, but could do nothing as Karlach’s infernal engine began to fail. With a heavy heart, she persuaded her to go to Avernus with Wyll, and took off to find Astarion. She promised to never leave his side, no matter what, from then on. 

Shortly, they would go to explore Faerun, to live a life of adventure, and find a way for him to walk in the sun again.

Over 500 years ago There was an infant dropped on the streets. Unfortunately, it was far from an unusual circumstance. Whores often gave birth to children they could not afford to have removed and did not want. Babies were abandoned in this area all the time, so often that people had started calling the place the Baby Tomb. The babies dropped there typically suffered one of three fates: either they died of starvation within a day or two, they were taken and eaten by desperately starving Fae, or a rare third option: they were picked up by somebody to take care of. A girl was watching the Baby Tomb as a young woman in a shawl deposited an infant at the Baby Tomb. A human: those were rare here in Doranelle, and often considered lower-class. It would make sense if she was a whore. It didn’t make the girl any less angry. That was a helpless infant. How could these people just leave them to die? Maria clenched her hands into fists. Her story was a little bit different. She’d had loving parents until last year when they’d both been executed for treason. They had worked for the Queen of the Fae and had apparently turned their back on her. So, the bitch had had them put down and all of their wealth stripped. That had left Maria an orphan just past her 14th birthday. Gone was the lavish lifestyle she had been gifted by her wealthy family. Gone were the parents who had showered her with love and affection. Most people expected that given her privileged birth, Maria would wither on the streets. But those people who believed that failed to consider several important factors: 1. Maria’s noble birth meant that she had strong Fae lineage built for surviving tough conditions.

2. Maria had played rough with males long before she had been forced onto the streets.

3. Her family had kept a small amount of money safe from the queen of the Fae’s clutches. Which meant that her parents had anticipated something like this happening. It wasn’t enough to buy a house or anything, but it would keep her alive for a few years before she figured out how to get a job while avoiding the tag of the “daughter of the traitor.” As soon as the woman left, Maria approached the infant. She looked around to see if anyone was watching her before she scooped the baby up into her arms and peered at his face. The baby was very skinny; most likely he was born prematurely, and the mother was probably not very healthy either. But his night-black eyes were bright and he already had a dusting of dark hair on his head. After a brief visit to the Black Market to acquire baby food, Maria carried the baby over to her little den, where she knew her friends would be waiting for her. As close to friends as you could get when you were all fighting for your survival, anyway. Symphony rolled her eyes as Maria approached. “What a surprise. Maria has picked up another stray.”

“Lay off her, Symph,” Neeraj said. Maria had a surge of gratefulness for Neeraj’s interference. Symphony was an acquired taste, very prickly and irritating at times, and she and Maria often clashed. Maria knew Symphony found Maria’s soft heart insufferable, and Maria felt the same about Symphony’s cold heart. “Really, you’re defending her, Neeraj? Remember that wild dog Maria tried to feed? And now she’s brought home an infant? How long will we survive, do you reckon? A few days?” “I’m not asking you to do shit, Phony,” Maria snapped, her nickname for her whenever Maria thought she was being rude. “I’ll take care of him myself.” “And waste our resources-“ “I’ll remind you, Phony, that most of it is either my inheritance money or money I earned through hard work-” “You mean stealing?” Symphony sneered. Maria ignored her, going on, “So you should be grateful I’m helping you guys out. Now if you don’t mind, I’m going to bed.” She saluted Symphony and Neeraj, walking past Vlain and Petro’s sleeping bodies as she passed.  She found her blanket and nestled into it, peering at the child again. She lifted the baby bottle she had gotten along with the food and placed it in the cherub’s mouth. Within a couple of minutes, the baby had consumed the entire bottle of food. Stunned, Maria placed the empty baby bottle on her other side, fully prepared to fall asleep. The baby reached forward with a tiny hand and grabbed one of her fingers. Maria gently tried to slide away, but found that the child had an almighty grip. Laughing, Maria pried the fingers off, staring at the child. “You’re a little fierce one, aren’t you? I think I’ll name you Lorcan,” Maria cooed at the infant. She could’ve sworn the little face smiled at her words. “You’re going to be like the little brother I never had, once you’re a little older. I always wanted siblings, you know,” Maria said. She was fully aware that she probably looked crazy talking to a baby, but she didn’t care. “We’re going to be the best sibling duo ever. You can even take my last name. Wouldn’t that be wonderful? The troublemakers, Maria and Lorcan Salvaterre.”

October 2023: Life Update

[Lifestyle] All I do is work, eat and sleep. If I have extra time to spend, that would go into cleaning the house a little or watching series until I fall asleep. I don't have the privilege now to eat good food everyday, I remember eating instant noodles and canned goods every single day (still experiencing now). I would eat fast food once as a reward, then go back to eating instant noodles and canned goods because that's what's convenient and what I can afford until the next payroll. Sometimes, I don't even want to eat, it's like I'm not longing for it, I could just drink water and be hungry until I feel weak and falls asleep. I sleep in an old sofa foam placed in a cold floor, every day my back hurts, I feel chilly and uncomfortable. I think my body is just not used to not having comfortable things in her life. My parents really spoiled me in life, gave me things so my everyday life was comfortable.

But I think, my state is now improving, I am financially being okay. Hopefully, I can afford a new comfortable bed with many pillows and a soft blanket. And a refrigerator, so I could stock food and just grab then cook. I could eat well! If I eat well that means I'm taking good care of myself, right?

[Relationship] Hmmmmm. Having difficulties with this one right here. I used to laugh when people say "Saka mo lang makikilala ang isang tao kapag kasama mo na talaga sa bahay." Don't get me wrong, I believed it when I was younger but never thought this is so fucked up when you're actually in the situation. And it really hits now. It's fucking real. Tbh, wouldn't dare to say I'm all healthy and fun to be with but right now.... The realest I could say is that this is not what I hoped for, not what I longed for, not what I dreamed of. I don't want someone to change so that we could work, I learned that "Kung hindi kayo swak, hindi kayo swak." even if that special someone change, it's not the same when someone really fits in your life, it would not feel like everything is working and acceptable. I just want everything to be easy, like how puzzle pieces fit in a board. My life is too much right now, to be stressed in my love life too. I don't have the capacity to cater the misery. I just want peace of mind, home, comfort, someone who will love me the way how I wanted to be loved, my all-or-nothing, my ride-or-die, the yin in my yang. Life is a fucking roller coaster itself, why want a relationship like one also?

I would love to have someone who I don't have to struggle translating myself with, I want someone who really knows me, the things I want, I need and deserve. I don't want to be the "guy" in the relationship. I want to be the baby. I'm busy trying my best to be mature in life but in relationship, I want to be the immature one, the one who always need to be cuddled and showered with love because someone thinks that's what I deserve. Someone who will be afraid to make me feel tired, hungry, or give me something to overthink about, because that someone already know I have too much burden to add more up. Someone who will make every thing he can possibly make lighter to help me lift this heavy life. I want someone who reads my soul. I want a man, someone who will take care of me. Not someone I should mold so that I could have the man I wished for. For once, I wish to have a man that is already molded, what I wished for. I'm no therapist, not a place to teach boys how to act and love. I'm so done with this bullshit. For once, I want to be the one who will be told how to act, be mature and be healthy in a relationship. To fix me... fuck, if someone could do that, hands down to that man already. This bitch ain't easy.

[Work] I am always proud of myself for not being dumb, you know? I learn fast, my intellectual capacity is something I boast off. I really like talking to intelligent people because it felt like the vibe is reciprocated, you know. Like for real, not to be a jerk. Worth my fucking time. But anyways, at work, I'm still an idiot. Don't mind me boasting since I am bobo right now, still learning and a beginner. But so far, by the comments given to me, I feel like I am exceling and coping good enough. I hope I will end this year at work with my sane self.

Enough na sana with workmates na Jollibee huhu, I can't even. Especially those who work too much to be recognized and takes credit then you will look like a tae lang na nakastay lang kasi walang dulot. Intellectual property is a critical issue. I'd rather work alone than work with toxic and unprofessional people, my patience can't even.

[Mental Health] This bitch is always on a mood swing. The instant change of physical/mental strength, mood, personality, walang makasabay sa agos ng utak ko pota. Anyway, my PCOS is the biggest contributor of this dilemma, couldn't choose to be nice for the better or to be fucking real and act/speak as I would please. The emotion burst, the instant cravings, the bloating, the constant "walang gana" phase. Tapon ko na sarili ko? Not very helpful for someone who is also a perfectionist, ga-hibla na nga lang pasensya ko, mas numinipis kapag wala ako sa mood tapos tanga yung kausap ko.

But I must say, I am at my most peaceful self right now that I am away from all noise. Mostly, I am alone, so I could only hear myself, which is sometimes also irritating but yeah, things are a lot better for my mental health. I can always blame myself only for all the hardships I'm having, the biggest relief. I am responsible for everything that is happening around me and inside me. A little easy to digest and solve since it's easier to forgive myself than other people if they destroyed or hurt me :)

Addressing Privilege in Nature Interpretation

I define privilege as unearned advantages that apply to certain groups of people. For instance, someone who grew up in a middle-class home with married parents did not earn the benefits of having food on their table every night, but rather are born into that privileged lifestyle.  Peggy McIntosh (1989) describes how privilege can be seen as an ‘invisible backpack’ of unearned assets that can be counted on cashing in each day, but is meant to remain oblivious. In other words, many individuals are unaware of the privilege they hold in their invisible backpack and overlook the lack of privilege that others experience. By unpacking our invisible backpacks, we can acknowledge the privilege we have as individuals. 

Here I will unpack my own invisible backpack; I am a white, middle class, healthy, young woman. I am also a highly educated individual that speaks English, is able to pay for university, possesses a Canadian passport, and has the opportunity to travel outside of Canada if desired. I grew up in a small suburban neighborhood that was relatively safe, I always had food on the table and my family could afford many extracurricular activities that my brothers and I would partake in. These are all things that I have been given from the love and support from my family without directly earning. 

Privilege also has a major influence on how we interpret and experience nature. There is a noticeably large lack of attendance from minorities in nature interpretation parks and this is suggested to be true due to economic, cultural, communication, knowledge, and fear barriers (Beck et al., 2018). Economic barriers from minority groups relate to large entrance fees to parks and minorities experiencing a generally lower socioeconomic position in society (Beck et al., 2018). Cultural barriers refers to the differences in culturally accepted activities in minority groups. For instance, some minority groups would not prefer camping as it is deemed more as being in deep poverty than as an activity to experience the wilderness for enjoyment (Beck et al., 2018). Communication barriers can prevent interpreters from being able to communicate with a variety of audiences that speak different languages aside from English. Speaking English is of high privilege and gives great advantages to people to be able to experience an abundant amount of activities in Canada. In relation to this, there is a lack of knowledge on the subject of nature in minority groups which can be a result of language barriers. Finally, fear also corresponds with this notion of lacking in knowledge. There is uncertainty of what to expect with wildlife encounters, as well as potential discrimination against minority groups in predominantly white-based activities such as camping (Beck et al., 2018).

Beck et al. (2018) suggests ways that we can provide inclusivity towards underprivileged and minority groups in terms of nature interpretation. Cultural barriers can be reduced by personally inviting minority populations to nature interpretation events through organizations to attract minority populations. By hiring a more diverse group of individuals, language barriers can be minimized by having a variety of programs be presented in multiple languages. Similarly, by increasing staff diversity, fears can be reduced and ultimately more education can be provided to marginalized groups.
