Something something the volumes it speaks that the Darkling felt the need to put Zoya and Alina in competition with each other and put them against each other from the moment they met so that they wouldn’t be able to immediately acknowledge what was being done to them and unite against him something something

something i adore about nikolai's character is there's still something selfish about his moments of selflesness, and sometimes there's moments of cowardice in his bravery. he puts himself on the front lines of war with fjerda, and races towards the battle during the bombing of os alta because he won't ask his soldiers to take a risk he isn't willing to take, because he needs to do something, because he needs to feel like a privateer instead of a king again, and perhaps because of a desire to die in the place of someone he would otherwise have to send to die. but what happens to ravka if he dies? he's still risking his people because ravka becomes so much more vulnerable without a leader. it's wild that nikolai seems to find staying alive and safe to lead in the aftermath of trauma on a personal and national scale a much more terrifying prospect than dying honorably in a way that hopefully saves at least one other person, because neither he nor zoya can take one more loss. but he's also a ruler of an unstable nation, with no heir, and can't afford the luxury of being brave.

Wylan: Seduction's not my strong point.
Jesper: Seduction's easy once you know the basic principles. There's nothing to it.
Wylan: Oh, really? Well, I don't see a crowd of women following you around.
Jesper: Why would I want a crowd of women following me around?

I love you, flawed female characters. May you continue to be bastions of relatability. Safe spaces where women can be worthy of admiration yet capable of damaging mistakes.
I love you, hated female characters. Picked apart for your boundaries, holding your head high, challenging those deemed “beloved” or “righteous”. Continuing to pay for miscalculations long atoned for.
I love your anger. I love your failure. I love your pride, your arrogance. I love your capacity to heal. I love your strength. I love your cold-heartedness. I love your vengeance. I love your unapologetic lack of remorse.
I love you flawed female characters, when you lash out, speak without thinking, hurt others, and suffer the consequences. Continue to learn, grow, and embrace your mistakes.
Teaching others the coexistence of goodness and imperfection. Bearing labels such as “difficult” without the courtesy of being known in depth. I love you flawed female characters.

i was just made aware that there are pro darkling blogs? which is actually so strange and bizarre to me. aleksander is a really fascinating character with a lot of depth, but that does not excuse his actions! the grisha situation in ravka, and frankly the whole of the world, was tragic, and the darkling did have a noble goal of giving grisha a seat at the table, but his execution was cruel. to say he was entirely justified, and in no way a villain is entirely absurd and shows not a deeper understanding of the canon material, but a sort of delusion only evident in dark romance readers.
another common thread im seeing is these blogs TRASHING characters like alina and genya. those girls were CHILDREN. genya was not "a woman who made her choices" she was put in an impossible position AS A CHILD, by her GENERAL. if she were to retaliate she would face the consequences of not just the ravkan king, but of her immediate superior within the grisha ranks. and do not even get me STARTED on the treatment of alina? they hate her until she's a part of their strange, darklina fantasy and it makes my skin CRAWL.

does anybody else think about how all of the darkling’s survival techniques were taught to him by a woman experienced at surviving in a man’s world?

Knife throwing and Inej
(This is all based on my experience as someone who spin knife throws)
~~~
No one talks about the calculations that need to be done when knife throwing because you need to be a certain distance for a spin knife throw and a no spin knife throw which in my experience is much harder. So when character like Inej who throw knives, they are probably also having to make sure to have the correct distance to throw the knife (spin wise) for it to hit someone otherwise the knife will bounce of the person without wounding them or just land handle first (unless it's a double edged blade like a blade on both ends).
Another thing is having different knives (i.e., different handles, weight, design, etc) wise is that each knife has to be thrown differently, distance wise, force wise and position of hand wise. For example, it's hard to go from a heavy knife to a light knife quickly when throwing because the knives have different conditions that suit throwing the knife. It's just cool to think of Inej taking in these calculations when throwing knives and how good she is at it that she could shift between all these different knives (unless she has all identical knives).
Weather conditions also play a factor in knife throwing, in winter it's much harder to throw knives because the blade are slippery (because of rain and we know it rains a lot in ketterdam), and if the balde had a metal handle it would be freezing cold to touch/ hold. My best guess as to how she would deal with this is to wear gloves (I did wear gloves but it messed up my ability to throw without gloves and the gloves ended up with holes in them because throwing knives do make your skin callous/ rubs your skin), but I can definitely see Inej just ignoring the cold and getting on with it. When I tried to ignore the cold (I was in 1°C my hand ended up getting blue and barely being able to move after being outside for more than 3 minutes. So my best guess is Inej has some fabrikator gloves, hopefully stimulating the grip of skin, not a fabric.
Basically, Inej is so freaking talented with knife throwing, and her skill is vastly underappreciated, especially with how quickly she learnt it. She's an amazing knife throwing badass.
(I just realised I wrote a lot more than I intended about knife throwing and Inej, I definitely have more to say from my experience, if you have any questions just let me know, and if I've said anything factually wrong feel free to correct me :)
a lot of people in fandom spaces will hate/demonize female characters for the same reasons they love/romanticize male characters and sometimes it’s not holding male villains/anti heroes accountable for their actions the way that female villains/anti heroes are and sometimes it’s hating female heroes/anti heroes for their personalities/flaws/attributes/trauma responses whilst romanticizing male characters for having the same or very similar characterization?? like hi why so many double standards??
ALSO some of these characters are teenagers??teenagers are really fucking messy, like they’re not gonna make perfect decisions all the time and they might seem unlikeable at times bc they’re … still children …??
I need to make a project on SST from some given topics. I chose social issues because I decided to make on women trafficking.
Because, guess why?
