One last thought on this before I force myself to finally read the books and make an honest comparison:

I LOVED the ending regarding Mal & Alina's relationship and that they're going their separate ways for now

bc as much as I love show!Mal & Archie put his everything into embodying that character and giving him nuance I still wasn't able to fully ship Mal & Alina. like yeah, they're cute and childhood friends to lovers whatever BUT he had nothing going on outside of her? Man's whole personality was "find alina, protect alina, serve alina, alina alina alina" he didn't have experiences of his own besides the trauma of losing his friends (while he was doing smth FOR ALINA smh)

so there's extreme co-dependency between both of them that's straight up holding them back at this point and I'm glad they addressed that and had them try and find who they are outside of each other's bubble (also please keep in mind that in the show everyone's in their 20s at least so it's not teenage decision-making, it's embarrassing)

alina starkov of the books was never ready for any kind of relationship, let alone made to navigate three separate love interests, one of whom is literally the villain???

i don't know why leigh characterized her so passively in the books but she was already so co-dependent and desperate for validation and approval and i felt like a satisfying character arc of watching her transform into someone stronger was kind of strangled by the plot and bad writing

Okay, to the people who follow me I still don’t entirely understand why you put up with my ramblings but I appreciate it I finished with the Shadow and Bone trilogy and have finished the Netflix show, so for the next good amount of time, that’s all I’m talking about here. I do like the Darkling, even though he is a Problematic Character as well as clearly the villain of the story. I don’t condone any of his actions or support him; I just think he’s neat tbh. (It’s the same as my feelings toward Goro Akechi from Persona, honestly.)

So be warned for that. I won’t be offended if you need to unfollow or block posts - I just wanted to give you guys a heads up before the onslaught <3
