in small fandoms you need to be grateful to the person who only accidentally hit you twice with a frying pan while trying to make you breakfast. in big fandoms you can block people for wearing a shirt you don’t like

girlriddle:
#ooooooh #fav fav fav #whatever aleks can do to tie them more deeply together to separate them from everyone else he will do #yES EXACTLY #a core fear of his stems from his experienced alienation from everyone in his life while simultaneously yearning for true connection #he obsessivley projects that desire onto alina her being the only one to ever join him in his uniqueness #and he partially resents her for her continuous rejection of that which does ultimately make him spiteful #if she doesnt see he will _make_ her see if she doesnt choose him he will take that choice and remake her in his own image #he inects her with his merzost his own essence basically as a last desperate attempt to wnforce his own truth of their alikeness #to simultaneously make her more like him and alienate her from everyone else around her #so she has no shelter left but him
Funnily enough, should she have more time, Alina would quickly slip into the unique immortal alienation by herself. She considers herself better than ordinary otkazat'sya, yet she doesn't feel like one of Grisha. She's soon THE Saint.
The only difference between that and Aleksander's weariness is that he sees himself as extraordinary, yet loves and cares for his people. She pretends to be virtuous humanitarian, but can't be arsed to truly take interest in anyone. And refuses to admit they might have anything in common as if she were the one suffering by the comparison.
Okay this might be a weird question but why do you think that aleksander let alina get bitten by the nichove’ya?? I remember they had an interaction in like ch 2/3 of sas where alina asks him why did he let one of his monsters bite her and his response his “that’s not why” and Alina remarks that something weird flashed in his eyes.
good question! and not an easy one to answer definitively, because aleks is so secretive about it. but i think we can use what he know about him and the few times it's mentioned to get a good idea of what's probably going through his mind. tbh this whole bit of their relationship is precisely my kind of fucked-up so i’m very keen to talk about it lol.
if we take a look at the pages preceding alina’s bite, there’s a moment when alina and aleks discuss the scars he received in the fold from the volcra:
he describes them as a reminder that all mend can be made fools — in this case, that even someone as ancient and emotionally weathered as the darkling can have his feelings turned against him. i don’t think there’s any pretense on his part by this point that he wasn’t (and isn’t) infatuated with her to the point of obsession. and this ardour is directed at the girl who tricked him, used him, destroyed all his hopes and plans because he believed he’d mastered her. he was a fool for her in the fold and he’s a fool for her now, although he clearly aims to change his approach to their relationship. i’d argue he only gets infinitely worse, but that’s somewhat beside the point of this moment: alina has left aleks bitten and scarred, and he sees it as a reminder of a lesson.
then, when alina gets bitten:
i think what we can take away from this is that a) given the immediate context of their earlier conversation this is partly simple tit-for-tat. alina wounds him with one of his own creations and he wounds her back in kind with a new piece of merzost. he gets to cause her some of the pain and fear she’s caused him, gain the upper hand and soothe his ego by reminding her that she hasn’t exhausted his arsenal of tricks. as he himself says, she knows nothing of power or what it means to wield it. this is his lesson in return for hers, and although he thanks her it’s not without (if you’ll pardon the pun) bite. he resents what she is to him - weakness, emotion over reason, the one true chink in his armour - but that resentment is so mixed with fascination that he can’t simply extricate himself from what binds them, not only for the sake of the amplifiers but on a deeply personal level. she’s under his skin, and now he’s under hers, more literally.
when alina asks him about it on the volkovny he’s predictably evasive:
he declines to answer alina, i believe, because of the inherent vulnerability that would require of him. the few times we see aleks intentionally let his guard down, such as in the tent the night before entering the fold, or early in ruin and rising when he begs alina to let him touch her, he immediately puts his walls back up as soon as he feels a hint of negative feedback. in the case of the night before the fold, his threats on mal’s life are transparent attempts to regain a sense of power and composure at his lowest moment, and in ruin and rising when alina rebuffs his advances he removes himself physically from her and puts his shirt back on, turning cold and distant, cruel even. there’s only so much weakness aleks will allow himself to show, at least intentionally. he’s said his piece about the events of book one, now it’s alina’s turn to be left in the dark.
additionally, he’s a touch pleased here - not so much that he hurt her, but that he marked her in an intimate way she can never shrug off. the right fabrikator can remove her collar, but no corporalki healer will ever erase those wounds or remove whatever may have passed into her with the bite. it’s intensely possessive and controlling, and alina has an intuition that something in her has changed because of it, although neither she or we can be sure:
not only does he ultimately control her power, he has essentially infected her with his own, a part of him residing in her forever. and once the nichevo’ya has bitten her, aleksander can appear to alina at any time and place of his choosing — though the connection between these two events is only ever implicit. even in the safety of the castle’s defenses alina cannot step out from under his influence for long. given that aleksander has always relied on his people skills to woo whoever he needs to fulfill his plans it’s hardly surprising he’d choose a tried-and-true method — except for the fact that, of course, alina has bested him in this method before.
the true reason for his choice to appear to her is that same as his choice to let one of his creatures bite her: not as part of some grand scheme to save ravka, but because of the aching hole inside him that only alina seems able to fill, the same loneliness he expresses in his final moments when he begs not to be left alone. when he answers alina’s question here one night while haunting her, he is for once completely honest:
whatever aleksander can do to tie them more deeply together, to separate them from everyone else as two like souls destined to be bound together forever, he will do. it’s possessiveness and anger and desperation that leads him to mark her as his own yet again, to tie them together with merzost even more strongly than before.

WITH NIKOLAI’S HELP, I’d brought in armaments experts from Poliznaya to help familiarize the Grisha with modern weaponry and give them training in firearms.
I reject this completely. Aleksander has already been described as utilizing an otkazat'sya weapons master and training his Grisha in every conceivable weapon. If he has one functioning braincell he would also ensure his Grisha are intimately familiar with firearms.
