Underrated Six of Crows duology quote of the day:
I’m already harbouring fugitives. If I’m going to aid, I may as well abet.

Book summaries below:
Six of Crows duology (Six of Crows, Crooked Kingdom) by Leigh Bardugo
Ketterdam: a bustling hub of international trade where anything can be had for the right price—and no one knows that better than criminal prodigy Kaz Brekker. Kaz is offered a chance at a deadly heist that could make him rich beyond his wildest dreams. But he can’t pull it off alone…
A convict with a thirst for revenge
A sharpshooter who can’t walk away from a wager
A runaway with a privileged past
A spy known as the Wraith
A Heartrender using her magic to survive the slums
A thief with a gift for unlikely escapes
Six dangerous outcasts. One impossible heist. Kaz’s crew is the only thing that might stand between the world and destruction—if they don’t kill each other first.
Fantasy, adventure, heist, secondary world, queernorm, series, young adult
Iron Widow by Xiran Jay Zhao
The boys of Huaxia dream of pairing up with girls to pilot Chrysalises, giant transforming robots that can battle the mecha aliens that lurk beyond the Great Wall. It doesn't matter that the girls often die from the mental strain.
When 18-year-old Zetian offers herself up as a concubine-pilot, it's to assassinate the ace male pilot responsible for her sister's death. But she gets her vengeance in a way nobody expected—she kills him through the psychic link between pilots and emerges from the cockpit unscathed. She is labeled an Iron Widow, a much-feared and much-silenced kind of female pilot who can sacrifice boys to power up Chrysalises instead.
To tame her unnerving yet invaluable mental strength, she is paired up with Li Shimin, the strongest and most controversial male pilot in Huaxia. But now that Zetian has had a taste of power, she will not cower so easily. She will miss no opportunity to leverage their combined might and infamy to survive attempt after attempt on her life, until she can figure out exactly why the pilot system works in its misogynist way—and stop more girls from being sacrificed.
Science fiction, fantasy, science fantasy, retelling, series, young adult

And what if Genya managed to kill Alina in Siege and Storm?
What a delightful idea!
He was dead. The Darkling’s right hand. One of the most powerful Heartrenders in the Second Army. He’d survived the Fold and the volcra, and now he was dead. A tiny sob drew me out of my reverie. Genya stood gazing down at Ivan, her hands over her mouth. “Genya—” I said. “Stop them!” The shout came from across the deck. I turned and saw the Darkling grappling with an armed sailor. Genya was shaking. She reached into the pocket of her kefta and drew out a pistol. Tolya lunged toward her. “No!” I said, stepping between them. I wasn’t going to watch him kill Genya. The heavy pistol trembled in her hand. “Genya,” I said quietly, “are you really going to shoot me?” She looked around wildly, unsure of where to aim. I laid a hand on her sleeve. She flinched and turned the barrel on me.
Siege and Storm- Chapter 4
THAT would certainly make sense!
Genya just witnessed one of the people closest to her killed, she's no fighter and the girl, who pretends to be her friend only when it suits her is about to leave them all to die in middle of the sea. Her General- the only person, who does anything for her people ordered her to stop the traitors... who could blame her for aiming wrong?
Hell, Alina's companions considered- any of them might try to heroically save her, pushing some more vulnerable part of her in the bullet's trajectory in the process. (*chants* idiot Mal, idiot Mal...)
Tumblr media
I'm not sure how well would the Darkling handle Alina's loss at this point. How objective would be able to remain considering his irrational attachment to what Alina fails to be. He might've ordered Genya to stop the escapee, yet Alina's still a much-needed asset. Would killing the ONLY Sun Summoner during a scuffle still amount to a treason?
(I'm afraid so, but since when do we play realism here?)
Such a course of action might allow Genya to keep her personality, while thrusting her in middle of more turmoil, which might not be nice, good and wholesome for a person, but it certainly offers more interesting story, than a two-faced perpetual victim has.

everyone quotes “i’m going to get my money, and i’m going to get my girl.”
but not the literal following sentence: “inej could never be his, not really, but he would find a way to give her the freedom he’d promised her so long ago.”
like to me that’s the more romantic of the lines; the fact that kaz immediately checks himself and is like nah she’s not mine but i will liquidate all my assets to ensure she’s free.

Thinking about the inherent romance of Jesper guiding Genya in recreating Wylan's face. The fact that he's able to say "this is a face that I loved so much, and so instantly, that I'm able to recite its details from memory despite not having seen it for weeks". WHO DOES THAT.
