I've said it before but my absolute favorite Renegades headcanon is that Max is physically incapable of keeping secrets from Nova, and that includes lying to her. this is not to say that Max is sweet or innocent; he will scheme to his heart's content and lie boldly to people's faces. it is specifically and exclusively Nova that this happens with, and for a very specific reason: Nova does not lie to/keep secrets from him, would never even dream of it. and that is because Nova was raised surrounded by lies and secrets. she knows what it's like to be a kid and have adults tell you something that you trust without question, only for it to be untrue, and she resolved to never make Max feel that way if she could help it.

there's also the fact that, whenever his dads or anyone else confront him about a secret/lie, they do so scoldingly, or like they already know he's hiding something. Nova, in comparison, is so taken aback and very obviously hurt by the idea that Max would do something like that that Max just avoids it altogether.

if i ever meet marissa meyer there is one thing i've wanted to ask her for years:

does adrian's sentinel suit have a voice modulator inside to disguise his voice, or does he just talk in a different voice around people he knows when he's in sentinel mode?

i could honestly see it both ways

this is my first time really writing it out, but this is kind of my view on how nova's responses to fear operate and interact with each other. nova is one of the most fear-defined characters i've ever encountered in fiction, so it felt necessary.

i think it's really interesting to read the series(and also reread my own writing) in the context and this and just see how the stages fluctuate and move into each other.

even tho nova and adrian got together eventually, i literally love how after nova rejected adrian at the carnival he backed off and treated her normally instead of being weird and pressuring her. truly a respectful king
