Renegades Series - Marissa Meyer

This was my favorite series I read this year. All my life I’ve looked for superhero novels, but there weren’t really any in the mainstream. And while I’ve learned to enjoy Graphic Novels this past year, I still don’t fall into those the same way I do with books. Finding Marissa Meyer’s Renegades series was such a fun experience for me because of that.

Nova being a villain at the start shifts the perspective of the book and raises a lot of questions as to whether the heroes are actually the good guys. Moving from Renegades to Arch-Enemies to Supernova, Meyer creates a really interesting world of superpowered people and the struggles that go with keeping people safe in such a world, especially when the government is being run by people with powers.

The characters are really where the series shines. Nova/Nightmare/Insomnia and Adrian/Sketch/Sentinel are the two main characters whose perspectives we see. Both of them have secrets that they’re keeping from each other and the Renegades as a whole, leading to much of the tension in the book. They are one of the best pairs I’ve read in YA in a long time and both of their desire to see the Renegades be better than they are is the driving catalyst for the series.

The supporting characters are maybe even more enjoyable. Max/The Bandit is my favorite character in the story. The rest of the team Oscar/Smokescreen, Ruby/Red Assassin, and Danna/Monarch are a delight. The council as a whole is fantastic, but Adrian’s dads Hugh/Captain Chromium and Simon/The Dread Warden, do a ton of the heavy lifting in helping to understand what the Renegades are and what they stand for. The other Anarchists, especially Leroy/Cyanide, help to humanize the other side of the Renegade’s battle and allow for Nova’s story to carry the weight that it does.

The Renegades series is one that I would absolutely recommend and it’s one that gives me hope there is an audience for books like mine!

I was watching 1987 Aerobics Championship opening on Youtube and wondered how the fuck those people could dance nonstop like that while smiling ear to ear. Then I suddenly had a thought: this is how Captain Chromium must feel.

Something I find very weird in Renegades is the fact that Nova’s name is not in the report Captain Chromium did about the murder of her family.

I don’t know if it was intentional, if it was a mistake, or if it even has any relevance but I thought it was interesting.

Like, why are the names of dead people in the report but not the name of the missing member? Wouldn’t it help the investigation to know the name of the girl in case someone finds her?

Idk it probably doesn’t have any relevancd but since I noticed it I js wanted to share it.

All right here's my leading theory about what happened the night Evie died:

We know everything up until Ace leaves with Nova, via Nova's reflection. That, comes along with the detail that her uncle didn't let her see the bodies. Which, can be both a "well of course you wouldn't let a child see CORPSES they've been traumatized enough" but also suspicious. Especially on reread if u weren't suspicious B4 the reveal.

Potentially, Evie was still breathing here. Potentially, she had signs of just barely grasping life, just no powers, nothing worth saving to Ace. Potentially.

Anyway, much more unclear if we can trust any information we're given about that night post prologue. Maggie is TOLD her backstory, we don't know if anything we're told is true

But here is what I think happened from there. The Renegades find out Adrian's mother was killed on the job while protecting the Artino's. Hugh and Simon show up to the scene too late, and both are shaken. After their close friend died, and seeing the state of the apartment, they wouldn't be on their a game. They might have checked pulses, then declared all of them dead, Nova's gone, and handed the job to someone else since friends of Adrian's mother wouldn't be able to do the best job.

Oscar survived a fire at a young age because of his power, his heart stopped beating temporarily, and he's not the only one to survive because of a power coming in clutch. And that's what happened to Maggie. Evie died, and Maggie came back to life. She was about the right age to start walking, and walk she did

Likely not far, since I doubt a near toddler covered in blood took a while for the landlord to find but whatever. The renegades sent in place of High Simon and the others were NEGLIGENT, didn't give a shit about the family of Ace Anarchy. Details fell through the cracks and didn't go addressed

We know Maggie was found by the landlord, we don't know who the landlord was. Or anyone else that knew details about her backstory. How much they cared, would anything motivate them to care? It was the age of anarchy. Maybe Nova's home wasn't the only home to face a break in that night, and it was easy to mix up what happened were.

There's a lot we don't. Know. But what makes the most sense to me is that Maggie's life as Margaret White, starts out with everyone's motivations focused on themselves. Starts out with everyone involved in their life focusing on their health, their comfort, their survival.

Y/n rested in her chambers, sitting and reading in her spot on the window seat. A soft pillow sat in her lap whilst she flipped through the page with her nimble fingers. She was relieved to finally have a moment to herself and not be constantly bombarded with the First Order. If only she had trusted her gut and banished her royal advisor, Iris Firestar, then this situation would’ve never happened.

The Kingdom of Kalisto wasn’t in shambles, unlike other planets the First Order had taken over.

The recent invasion of their home was very much traumatizing, they lost many warriors that tragic day. The war was merciless, though, some were spared. Y/n couldn’t forget the moment they had breached the walls of the great Palace and captured y/n and her remaining family, which was her two sisters.

One older sister, Lanovah, and youngest sister, Danica. Their parents had died a few years ago and everything was well, that was until Iris had got a little power hungry.

Hux had locked y/n in her chambers with no way out, except for a window that dropped at least a couple hundred feet. So, unless she wanted to die a painful death, she couldn’t get out.

Knock. Knock.

“What is it now, Hux?” The Princess huffed, shutting her book with a slam, the door opened revealing the corrupt advisor.

“Oh. You.” She seethed, crossing her arms, not moving an inch, yet Iris moved quick grabbing the girl’s arm and yanking her up, not even saying a word. Her face was expressionless as she dragged her across the Palace, the Young Princess screamed and shouted behind her doing her best to resist her grasp. Throwing the throne rooms’ doors open she pushed her inside, shutting them promptly behind her, “You sick monsters, what do you want from me now? Money?” Troops marched into the throne room with an organized fashion, another one that looked like a trooper walked in behind them. The figure commanded respect, never faltering in their confident movements. She instructed for the troops to disperse around the room, her voice was harsh, rough, but feminine in a way, they all replied with a ‘Yes, Captain Phasma.’

Hmm. Y/n knew of that name, she could faintly remember her people gossiping about a highly decorated Captain from the first order

“I’m saddened, you think so lowly of me, Princess Y/n” Armitage smirked, his hands secured behind his back, he took a step forward, explaining the situation to the princess, no one in the royal family would be left alone without a trooper with them at all times.

In this case for y/n, Captain.

“I’ve assigned you, Captain Phasma, one of our finest” He stepped aside to let the chrome armored woman stand next him, her aura never fading, it seemed that Hux was being rushed and hastily sent them off to do what ever it is the Princess needed to do.

“So, what do you like to do?” Y/n asked, looking up at the tall Captain her armor was perfectly polished, so much so that she could see herself in the reflection. She’d tried to get to know the First Order Captain but it had been a few hours and she hadn’t said a peep. Anytime she’d need to go somewhere Phasma was always a few feet or…inches away.

She didn’t sign up for this! No, this couldn’t be happening her privacy was always something she valued. Now, it was ruined all due to that Armitage and this walking disco ball. She’d abandoned any form of manners, she prayed to the maker that she’d have the strength not to just smack the Captain in the head. Though, she was sure she’d be overpowered.

She opened her window revealing the glorious City surrounding the Palace walls. Her eyes stung with many emotions, she looked out at the city she failed to protect, she had failed her parents, her people, her oath.

She could feel the other woman’s presence in the room standing firm like a statue. She wondered what was under that perfectly polished exterior. Maybe what lay beneath doesn’t resemble the outside.

The princess huffed, throwing the book she was reading before onto a pile of them on the floor. She sniffled as tears began to resurface, Phasma turned her head toward the young woman, her face shielded her from revealing any sort of emotion not that she was going to show them any way. Her just smirked knowing that the princess realized that there was no way out of this. Surely, now that the First Order has the upper hand, this Kingdom will be a base of some sort, who knows what obstacles and difficulties the people of Kalisto will endure. Maybe, the First Order will receive a protest of some sort.

Only time would tell on how this disaster would end up.
