I am actually convinced that when Charles was shot, Erik completely forgot that he was still wearing the helmet and was projecting his thoughts at Charles like crazy, trying to get him to understand the meaning behind his words. But thanks to that helmet, Charles didn’t hear his thoughts and so misunderstood all his words.

“We want the same thing.”

What Erik meant: We both want to be together, don’t we? I love you and want to spend my life with you and grow old with you and never be parted from you again, you must want that too??

What Charles heard: We both want to do whatever it takes to protect our kind, even if it means committing terrorism, don’t we? I want mutantkind to flourish regardless of human collateral damage, you must want that too??

“I’m sorry, but we do not.”

What Charles meant: I don’t want to deal with humans that way, and I refuse to be part of such violent plans; you’ve gone down a path I can’t follow, and I can’t bear it because I love you so much and I wish there was some way that we can make this work but clearly you don’t want this to work and your ideals mean more to you than I do.

What Erik heard: I don’t want you anymore, I don’t love you anymore, and I refuse to grow old with a monster like you; you’ve destroyed me, and I hate you for it, so please get out of here. I never want to see you again.
