DC Kitten
Thank you to @maxivermismind reminding me of Kitten. The daughter of Killer Moth and girlfriend of the Fang. The spoiled brat has first appeared in the Teen Titans episode Date with Destiny. In which Fang had dumped her with her junior prom is tomorrow. She bullies her father into adding the condition that Robin must go with her to the prom to his scheme blackmail the city with his swarm of mutated moths. Kitten dosent have any interest in Robin in the beginning and is only doing this to make Fang jealous. This works making Fang attack Robin, at the same time a jealous Starfire attacks Kitten for forcing Robin into this role. Fang, Kitten and her father are all arrested, while swearing vengeance on Robin.
Next appearing in Revved Up alongside Fang as a part of the super-villain entourage racing Ding Dong Daddy for Robin's personal secret. She drives a pink Limousines like what would be driven to prom and it is cut in half by Red X.
Her last on screen appearances was as a members of the Brotherhood of Evil, her and Killer Moth ambush Starfire who came to rescue Argent. Stealing Starfire's communicator to say hi to Robin who was surprised, she was pleased to see him and taunted him before attacking Starfire. Using a swarm of her father's mutant moths and an electric whip. She was not defeated along side the Brotherhood Of Evil.
Next appearing in the pages of Teen Titans Go! #15 in Pop Quiz Kitten looked for all purposes like she was kidnapped by Kwiz Kid. When in reality Kwiz Kid was her new boyfriend, who she was just using to get rescue by Robin. Turns out Kwiz Kid was just using her to lure the Titans in to his trap, being more interested in matching wits with Robin. Offended Kitten dumps him and trys to slap him, discovering he had escaped leaving a hologram in his place. Later Killer Moth takes Kitten back home, scolding her for not telling him the truth about her fake kidnapping by Kwiz Kid.
Next Appearing in Teen Titans Go! #41 Bad Girls were Kitten dresses up as multiple of the Teen Titans villains while claiming to be their daughters: Pink X (Red X), Marionette (The Puppet King), Mad Maud (Mad Mod), Daughter Blood (Brother Blood), and Joy Stick (Control Freak). All the newspaper clip on a panel shows Gemini (Madame Rouge), and Madamoiselle Mallah (Monsieur Mallah) and her in a Slade-like outfit, resembling Ravager. It is revealed that her plan was all a way to get her father's attention. He does spoiling her, but rarely actually spent time with her, the Titans help sort the matter out and Killer Moth promises to cut back on super villainy in order to spend more time with his daughter.
Lastly in Teen Titans Go! #44, Kitten calls the Titans asking them to come save her father from Red Raven.
For general thoughts to me she is the antithesis to Stephanie Brown, the daughter of a villain who does not care who gets hurt. They're both blonde, headstrong, dated a Robin and have fathers but barely counters supervillains. Her theme was originally based around prom, as a super villain theme that is pretty weak. Psychologically though I believe it's spot-on, it's what every normal girl thinks about in any time any negative consequences from her father's supervillain actions come in to her life they are treated like a father being embarrassing. I believe she wants all of the benefits but none of the downsides of having a super villain father.
Her popular girl attitude has also got me thinking of who she would be connected to. We've seen her boyfriends Fang & Kwiz Kid, one being super powered with a similar theme to her fathers and the other being a mirror of Robin. Kwiz Kid could even shrimp in by Stephanie Brown connection with her father cluemaster and him sharing Riddlers theme. I believe she would be an anti-side kick. Not a Spoiler, more of a spoiled brat who would complain the whole time if she had to lift boxes let alone help with a heist. The only other thing of note is with her supervillain connections I believe could be used as the head of a group of supervillains children. High profile criminals children like jokers' daughter will always go to jail, but no one will ever think to check Killer Moth's daughter. She would be the head of a group of low level supervillains spawns whose parents are successful enough they can get whatever they want, but not famous enough to bring the hammer down on the entire family. This can show what life could have been like for Stephanie if she didn't become Spoiler.

Happy Queer Media Monday!
Today: The Movement from DC Comics
Inclusive superhero group done right.
(The team sitting over their city at the end of the first story arc. From left to right: Vengeance Moth, Burden, Katharsis, Virtue, Tremor and Mouse.)
The Movement is a 12 issue comic book series published in 2013 and 2014 by DC Comics as part of The New 52. It is probably best known on Tumblr for featuring the heroine Tremor, who is canonically asexual, but it has so, so much more to offer.
The Movement is a group of disenfranchised teenagers in Coral City, led by Holly Ann Fields aka Virtue. The series can be kind of divided into three story arcs: Their fight against the corrupted police (issue 1-8), Batgirl visiting (issue 9-10), and Burden’s fight against his brother (issue 11-12).
Superheroes being used as a metaphor for oppressed groups is nothing new, but what makes The Movement special is that they really are an incredibly diverse group, featuring many different identities. We have:
Virtue / Holly Ann Fields, who is a Black lesbian,
Tremor / Roshanna Chatterji, an asexual Indian immigrant,
Mouse / Jayden Revell, who could be argued to have an intellectual disability, though nothing concrete is actually said,
Katharsis / Kulap Vilaysack, a Laotian immigrant,
Burden / Christopher, who is gay,
Vengeance Moth / Drew Fisher, a former addict and wheelchair user with muscular dystrophy
Here is an article from when the series launched, where the creator discusses the politics of it, and a lengthy one written at the end of its run about how it championed diversity in the superhero comic medium.
Here are the Wikipedia and DC fandom wiki articles about the series.
Queer Media Monday is an action I started to talk about some important and/or interesting parts of our queer heritage, that people, especially young people who are only just beginning to discover the wealth of stories out there, should be aware of. Please feel free to join in on the fun and make your own posts about things you personally find important!
#thought I could get away with this during#disabled pride month#not because it has a disabled queer character#but because it has a team that does both the queer and disabled members justice#SUCH. A. DC Writers are very limited. On top of that, they must privilege Batso in all their stories because he's the company's cash cow.
Batso has zero superpowers, except for having the entire comic company on his side, which one should never underestimate. He may be an extraordinary human, but he's still just human, with limitations. Writers tell us he has none, he's very clever, the most. But he's far from being a supergenius with a solution for everything: he can't stil solve the problems of his troubled city, his confessed main goal, which he may had made even worse with his mere presence. crazy activities and ill fated plans. He never used his sizeable intellect in curing terrible diseases like cancer or to solve famine or poverty, only toys to show his enemies and friends how smart he is. In spite of this, writers insist on telling he can outsmart even his meahuman colleagues, people who can read and memorize an entire librfary in the time it takes for him to take a dump. Either you cancel the superpowered all together or you stop talking nonesense. Both are not acceptable. IMHO.
He's a billionaire, inherited, with zero social empathy. His riches are his superpower and that's all he cares about. The current social statu quo of wealth distrubution is fine by him. as long as it allows him to keep playing the masked hero. Social justice escapes him or he doesn't give a shit abou it. His only contribution on the matter is the typically useless charity foundation, which's only purpose is allow rich families and multinational companies to get tax exemptions and save face in public, saying "at least, we are doing something".
He pretends to ba a rich playboy and it is hard to believe how he can pull it off. Social butterflies and socialites are very focused in catching a rich partner to marry or, at least, to pass a wild night, but not with Bruce. their quest submits the potential candidate to the harsh scrutiny of the interested gold diggers. Let me tell you: these women can't count to ten, but their BS radars are top notch. He famously doesn't drink and has too many dark secrets to allow others into his convoluted life. in social circles, word of moth is paramount and the girls rapidly warn others about his unavailability for anything and promptly declare him an outcast and untouchable. A weirdo. Pretty much, socialites and gold diggers are like the mean girls in high school: if you don't play by their rules (they play your game as long as you are a viable suitor, when they realize you are not, it's over) they won't waste their time with you and won't let anyone else do it. That's the problem with home schooled rich kids: they miss a lot in social conventions and clues. You may be vengeance, you may be the night, but you're not the night these girls want, so scram, freak. Note: in his defense, he can only have sex on rainy nights, on rooftops with hiscostume on. Kind of a fetish of his.
One obvious advantage writers have over fans to sell them bullshit is fans are also socialy awkward weirdos themselves eager to buy that bullshit and what they consider cool and trendy, like being a billionare and fight crime in a costume with secret dual identity it's just a fantasy of them. Fans desperately want to be their hero. Fans, with all due respect, have little or no idea what is cool in current society. They rely only on their fantasies, which are often incomplete wishful thinking and missguided, fed by what people who want to sell them stuff say to them. That's the only reason a character like Batso can have such enormous popularity.
And the elephant in the room: he is crazy as fuck. He's a socially functional maniac, a sociopath with delusions of grandure and split personality who believes the masked character is the real person. His grasp on reality is duvious at best, but his colleagues let him operate and take decisions for them because they're a bunch of cowardly yes men and women and enablers. This is all writers doing because they have orders from above.
Not gonna say it doesn't happen in real life. We all know cases of public personalities belonging more to a mental hospital and yet, they are running countries and multibillion dollar companies. Power doesn't discriminate. But in writing, we have the oportunity to set the record straight, but because he makes money for the comic company, we will let things stay as they are...
Okay...pretty much like real life.
We all know superheroes are not entirely there, they don't have all their ducks in a row, like Punisher, and others, but they are treated as a necesary evil, marginal individuals who can't belong in society. Batso is deemed as an example to follow and a model. A captain of industry and a social leader.
Again, pretty much like in real life.
His friends😜, for some reason, overlook all his quirks and, instead of helping him get professional assistance, which he desperatelly needs, indulge in his games. If they were having some sort of economical compensation, that would be a reason. But no. Just because. Besides, he treats his friends and everybody like shit, considering himself above all of them. He loves to play parlor tricks on them to confuse them and feel superior. Why would a normal person stand him is beyond me. He claims being a personal friend of Clark Kent, but he can't stand his wife Lois Lane because she is as nacisistic as himself and they constantly clash. A friend for Bruce is a person he can use and manipulate at will. Clark has his own personal puppeteer, so he's taken, mostly. So Bruce takes on him in the League of Justice, berating him at every turn in front of their colleagues, to show Superman is just muscle, a brute with no brain. Kal-El, used to being disrespected at home, shuts up and smiles like an idiot.
This will continue as long as fans need Batso to fulfill their fantasies.
And this IS real life.

365 DC Comics Paper Cut-Out SuperHeroes - One Hero, Every Day, All Year…
May 23rd - Vengeance Moth
The heroine known as The Vengeance Moth is Drew Fisher. Drew was diagnosed with muscular dystrophy in her late childhood and utilizes a wheelchair to help with her mobility. She got mixed up in substance abuse in her adolescence but managed to kick the habit. Doing so helped her to fully actualize her latent metahuman powers. These powers include a type of psionic energy manipulation. She can generate a glowing green moth that envelopes her body and can be used for a variety of purposes, including flight, energy blasts and force fields.
When she uses this power, Drew regains a greater degree of control over her body, temporarily altering the muscular atrophy caused by her disease. Yet she can only maintain her psionic moth state for a limited period of time before becoming exhausted; as such she has needed to be cautious to pace herself in the field. Choosing the name ‘Vengeance Moth’ Drew became a member of the Coral City social activist group of heroes known as The Movement. The heroine first appeared in the pages of The Movement #2 (2013).

Team-Ups I Want To See #14
This is provoked by a recent question about one of the side of this team-up - Anarky. I said that most of the writers don’t seem to get this guy. He is an anarchist to the core, his name is his goal. But too many times he is written by people who don’t get what Anarchism is and wrongly assume he stands for absolute chaos and lack of rules (or, as @ubernegro pointed out, confuse Anarchism with Social Darwinism) and not what Anarchism is actually about. Well-written Anarky is a well-intentioned anti-hero, who is shown as well-intentioned and smart about it, but willing to cross the lines others would not cross, putting him at odds with most superheroes and also somewhat naive, leading to him making a deal with the devil or two and thinking he can make it work out. I thought what could be good characters not related to Batman or Bat-Family that he could play off well and I remembered the Movement - a group of social-minded superheroes who themselves, in Gail Simone’s words, "all have reason to be mad at the system, which hasn't protected them, or even tolerated them". The Movement draws inspirations from all kinds of real-life movements described as fighting for social justice so it would be fitting to see Anarky reach to them as it reflects well the rising sympathy for Anarchism in many of those movements as well. He could cause some friction due to his methods, both between him and the team and maybe also inside the group as it would be realistic some of them should agree with his methods and others not so much. If handled to a writer who actually knows what anarchism is, not necessarily being one himself, it might also spark some good discussion about it in the more politically-minded part of the fandom.
Also, an interesting bit of trivia. Anarky is commonly accepted to be based on the protagonist of V for Vendetta, with his golden mask being a stand-in for V’s famous Guy Fawkes Mask. Same mask that was used by Occupy Movement, which was the main inspiration for comic book Movement. A mask that also is commonly associated with Annonymous these days - a group that in latest years had a quite visible shift to the right. I think there is potential in this story for some meta-commentary. Maybe Movement and Anarky join forces to stop right-wing villains who were inspired by them but used their symbols and methods to fight for things the heroes certainly do not agree with? It might be interesting to see them having to deal with that kind of legacy and fight to take back what they come to symbolize and stand for.

Today’s disabled character is Vengeance Moth aka Drew Fischer(code name: Ven) from “THE MOVEMENT” comic. Ven has muscular dystrophy in her case it primarily attacks her legs, and had a gradual onset. Some years before the story started she could still make do with crutches. But by the time she joined the Movement, she had to use a wheelchair.Early on, this presumably was because degrading muscles meant a risk of sudden falls.
In practical terms:
-She cannot use her legs. But her upper body, including her arms, are stillOK. So she can still operate her wheelchair, type, handle objects, etc.She even could punch whilst flying, or use an old crutch as a club.
-Certain movements that require her to stress her lower body (such as dragging herself back into her wheelchair) are particularly painful.
-She also suffers from Taphephobia(fear of getting buried alive)

NEXT
-------------------------------------
“But MDC is still...” Alix started and suddenly realization dawned on her. She finally connected the dots. From there, she realized more and more. It was like she woke up from some trance. Image of utter fear and regret on her face was priceless. “No…“
Alix run out of class just as madame bustier entered.
--------------------------------
After the matter with Akumatized Alix crashed the classroom and was defeated by ladybug and her team, the classes were canceled. Marinette spent the afternoon with Damian, happy to crush him several times in Ultimate Mecha Strike and several other games.
“Can we play something else now?” He moaned as the big red defeat displayed on the screen. He convinced her to go to arcade to have more choice, which proved to be his biggest mistake. The girl decimated him in absolutely everything.
“Oh. Ish baby shad that I win?” Marinette tried to imitate english babytalk, but it did not really work in her favor.
“I see no dishonor in losing to a titular champion.” Damian tried to defend his ego, but she only giggled.
“I have an offer for you. If you beat me in any game, you can choose what we do tomorrow.” She tried to motivate him.
“You want to repeat it?” He asked surprised.
“Yes silly. I really like you… I mean spending you with time… No wait! Timing with you spend… Spending time with you! I like spending time with you!” She finally shouted, getting some confused looks from people around. That is until they met Damian’s gaze and run away before Marinette could get more embarrassed.
“I was just kinda... surprised. Not even my brothers want to spend that much time with me.”
“They aren’t married to you now, are they?”
“Only you Angel.” Damian grinned as she blushed deep shade of red. “I challenge you for a dance.”
“What?” She asked confused.
“tt. Dance Off. The game. You asked me to challenge you for a game. That is what I choose.” He explained.
“I… never played before.” She said a bit shyly.
“Is that a surrender?” He gave her a challenging look.
“Dream on.” She retorted and moved to the panels in the back. there were no people currently using it so they jumped on the platforms.
Damian confidently got into stance while Marinette just copied him. One of Jagged Stone’s older songs started playing. While the boy immediately started to follow the rhythm and get the perfect score, Marinette clumsily tried to follow his footsteps. She was off balance and hardly following the keys. She missed every third one and never scored perfect. She would definitely loose.
She stopped dancing and took one deep breath. She focused on the song instead of just pressing the buttons. When she started dancing, there was no more clumsiness or flailing hands while losing balance. She was confident, strong and she would totally kick Damian’s ass in this game just as well as in the others.
As Damian danced, he kept perfect score. If not for the fact that she’s beaten him in every single other game in this arcade, he would actually pity his wife. At least until she started to get perfect score too. Suddenly, they were moving in perfect synch with music and each other. A crowd gathered around them. People were cheering for them. He was pretty sure he heard some wolf whistles from the boys in the back that were directed to Marinette and he was pretty tempted to drop the game and just throw some things at them. Maybe exploding batarangs. Yeah. That would work…
By the time they were getting to the final, Damian had a quite firm lead. Then, he heard someone from the crowd actually dare to call some slurs at Marinette and got distracted. It was something along the lines “I want to see your other moves”, He only slipped for a moment, hitting several wrong buttons while getting up, but Marinette got in the lead by mere ten points. She was completely unfazed by the cries and words of the crowd. It was like she was in her own world. Damian caught himself staring at her instead of dancing so he doubled the effort. In the end, she still won.
“Yeah! You go babe! I want to...” Damian saw red. It was the same guy as before. He jumped over the railing that kept players from falling off the stage and punched the guy mid-air square in the face. There was a cracking sound and the idiot fell down with bloodied nose. The crowd dispersed as if it was never there.
Immediately, almost half a dozen of other guys appeared around to support their mate.
“Now you just got yourself a problem boy.” One of them commented.
“Actually…” A new voice joined the ‘discussion’. “I think your friend is the one in trouble. He was calling my friend here some very inappropriate names and suggesting several less than legal things.” Alix rolled into the sight.
“So since the girl can’t take some compliments! Doesn’t mean he can punch our friend.”
“He is her boyfriend who was defending her from an elderly man. She is underage so get lost before I call the police.” Alix threatened them. While the idiots were distracted, Damian took the opportunity to grab normal dusters and put them on his fists. He was ready for a fight. The fact that this tugs didn’t pull knives or guns already was close to a miracle. If it was Gotham, he would have a gang-fight on his hands ready and set.
“Sowwy madame.” The one with broken nose spoke, showing that he also lost some teeth. “I was not awawe of that. You looked so full of confidence that I fowgot myself.” He apologized and got lost with his friends as per instructions.
“Ugh! I swear they keep getting in trouble.” Alix complained to himself. Damian was suddenly in front of her. Because of her rollerblades she was taller so he had to look up.
“Excuse me, but where from do you know this criminals?” He started to interrogate her.
“Calm down Short Stack.” She cooled him off. “My brother and I sometimes volunteer at the homeless center. They tend to come there from time to time. One of this guys even works there.” She explained.
Marinette walked to the scene and practically pulled away the still fuming Damian. “Thanks for the assist Alix.” There was an awkward silence interrupted only by Damian’s breath. He was not tired, only angry.
“No problem.” Skater girl finally shrugged. “Listen Mari. I wanted to… apologize. Lila is a liar and an idiot. I was even bigger idiot for believing her.”
“tt. My plan worked at least partially I see…” Damian commented.
“Your… plan?!” Marinette shouted at him. “I asked you specifically not to do that because we will have another scarlet moth at our hands!”
“I think that is something the two of you should solve between yourself so I will leave you to it.” She was about to ride away, but Alix took one last look over the shoulder. “Are we cool MDC?”
“Yes Alix. Yes we are.” Marinette smiled before making an angry face at Damian. Alix chuckled and zoomed away.
----------------
Late in the night Red Robin, Ladybug and Robin met in the Wayne Enterprises headquarters.
“Anything new on hawkmoth?” She asked. It was more than a month of them working separately but so far there was little they could do.
“Well, I think I tracked the Akumas to this general area.” He pointed to the holograph map of Paris.
“This is like one-fourth of the city!” Damian was less than amused.
“It is still something. At least Akuma appear on camera.” He said, reffering to the time when Tikki (convinced by Marinette) sneaked into the building to switch Tim’s coffee for the non-caf version so he would get some sleep. He didn’t forgive her to this day, but he would not take vengeance when mr. I-stab-anyone-who-harms-her was on the same continent, much less the same city.
“So we are not really that close.” Ladybug sighted.
“I do have some suspects. Out of the people in Paris who were not akumatized only handful match the criteria. And then, if you eliminate those who are not living in the area, then you have… an empty list.”
“So hawkmoth only owns a hide-out in this area.”
“That would be hard, unless he works from the sewers.” Red Robin zoomed on the area. “This is stricltly living space. Not even that many shops. I also don’t believe a shop owner would have time to attack the city on so many occasions. At least not while keeping a steady revenue.”
“So we have literally no clue?”
“Well, if you take in account that Hawkmoth could somehow akumatize himself, we do have one solid lead.”
“Who?” Ladybug was very eager to finally be done with all of this and return to being a normal teenage girl.
“Gabriel Agreste.” Red Robin displayed a profile picture of the artist for reference.

Happy Pride Month!
I'm starting this month off a little different. In my research for LGBT+ characters, I found DC's The Movement, by Gail Simone. It only ran for 12 issues in 2013, but was an amazing story and the team was incredibly diverse, including lots of LGBT representation. So, I present to you, The Movement.
First is Virtue. She is a lesbian and the leader of the team, with dreams of her and her team working side by side with the Justice League. She can sense others’ emotions which makes her a level headed leader, but she is very protective of all her friends.
Next is Katharsis. She was a refugee from Laos and a former police officer. When the justice system failed, she build her wings and became a vigilante I’ve heard people say she is bisexual, but I couldn’t find anything to confirm or deny it.
Tremor is the character that I first learned about on this team. She is one of the few asexual characters in main stream comics. She was born in India and her family moved to America after she began to develop her powers.
Vengeance Moth is one of the two cishet characters on this team. The niece of Killer Moth, she is a recovering substance abuser who suffers from muscular dystrophy. When she uses her powers, she can fly, but it takes a lot out of her and can leave her exhausted.
Mouse is the second cishet character. He was born to a rich family but left them behind as he was more comfortable living in the sewers with his army of rats and the rest of the team. He has names for all his rats and loves them with all his heart.
The last member of the team is Burden. He grew up in an Amish village, but was cast out because the believed he was possessed by the devil, due to his powers. He has since found a family with the Movement after they rescued him. When he left his village with the movement he proclaimed to everyone that he was gay. Sadly, with the series being cancelled after 12 issues, they never really talked about his sexuality again.
So, that was The Movement. They are a team of teen anti-heroes, most of them willing to do what other heroes won’t. It was a very good series and I wish it had lasted longer. I would highly suggest reading it if you get the chance.

having barbara gordon be the same age as dick grayson is trash! she should be the oldest of the batkids!
I saw something online that tried to claim barbara was 19 when she quit being batgirl & got shot like a few months later BUT that doesn’t make sense since she retired and was shot BEFORE the events in a death in the family
(google it!)
and jason todd was 15 when he died, and was robin for three years so barbara would have had to have been 16 when jason became robin BUT she's supposed to have been batgirl at the same time dick grayson and jason todd were robins, for dick she's supposed to have become batgirl at least a couple years after dick has been working as robin, and dick is older than jason by at most six years making him 18 when he left & when jason became the new robin
and I refuse to believe barbara gordon was 14 when she started working as batgirl when dick grayson was 13 and robin
I don't do dickbabs but I know a major part of their history is dick having a crush on batgirl babs and not doing anything about it because she's a lot older than him
barbara's origin story is she put on the batgirl costume to go to a halloween party, stopped killer moth (who she had a crush on LMAO) from kidnapping bruce wayne, found out she was good at being a hero & liked doing it, so she made herself become batgirl not out of a need for vengeance or to prove herself but because she was good at heroism, liked doing it, and considered it fun, & went through training & patrol while being told to go home & to stop by batman until he realized she wasn't going to stop & basically told him to go fuck himself every time he tried to get her to quit & after like, a few years she earned his respect & trust (eye roll) as a fellow vigilante
this isn't even going into how she's supposed to be a librarian while also being batgirl
SO I THINK
barbara gordon should be 22 when she becomes batgirl, and dick grayson should be 15 at that time and should have been robin since he was 13
so she'd be 27 when she retires and then later becomes oracle
so dc trying to do what they're doing now with having her be the same age as dick or a year older than him makes no sense and is trash!
tldr; barbara gordon should be the oldest of the batkids, she should be older than dick grayson by seven years and this is the stance I'm taking!

Baby flew down a two-lane highway as AC/DC’s ‘Back in Black’ blared from the speakers. It had been a few weeks since their last hunt and Dean had brought the Impala back to life. She looked good as new and seemed to almost sparkle in the sunlight.
The hunter grinned from ear to ear as he felt the leather of the steering wheel in his hands. “Whoo! Just listen to her purr. Have you ever heard anything so sweet?”
“You know, if you two wanna get a room, just let me know, Dean,” Sam joked as he turned down the stereo.
Dean rubbed the dashboard. “Aww, don’t listen to him, Baby. He just doesn’t understand us.”
The young Winchester chuckled. “Well, you’re in a good mood.”
“Why shouldn’t I be? Got my car, got a case--things are looking up.”
Riley stayed quiet in the back seat as she stared at the scenery whisking by. She had headphones on and seemed completely disengaged.
“And, uh--what about...?” Sam nodded back in Riley’s direction.
Dean’s face changed only slightly. “What about her?”
Sam scoffed. “Dean--,” he stopped before clearing his throat. “Women can’t be hunters, Dean. They’re a liability.” His voice was loud and teasing. When he realized she didn’t bite his head off, Sam knew she couldn’t hear them. Riley would have already smacked him upside the head.
Lowering his volume, he looked at Dean. “When are you gonna make things right with her? I mean, she even started sleeping in her own room for crying out loud.”
“Sammy, I told you. My relationship...is my relationship. Don’t worry your pretty little head over it.”
“I do worry, Dean. I know you love her...so, what the fuck is the problem, man? You’ve been completely different with her since Dad died.”
“Can we just not talk about Dad for like five fucking minutes, please?”
“Whatever” Sam scoffed. “You’re being a fucking idiot, for the record.”
“Noted.” Dean paused. “How far to Red Lodge?”
Sighing, Sam replied, “about another 300 miles.”
“Good,” he said as he turned up the music once again. Dean leaned his foot into the gas and the Impala roared beneath the hunters.
------
Sam, Riley, and Dean had ripped off a couple of white lab coats from the intern locker rooms. They walked down the halls of Candler County hospital while Riley read off the notes from her research.
“Alright, so, I met with the Sheriff. Quick sidebar, dude looks like Colonel Mustard,” she added looking up at Sam who chuckled. “Told him I was with the ‘Daily World’ newspaper and was looking into the murders in the area. By the way, all of which had their heads cut clean off. Sheriff told me he couldn’t comment on the murders right now, though. Then I brought up all the local cow mutilations--over a dozen cattle split open and drained of their blood. Told him I thought it sounded like some kind of satanic ritual if you add it to all the head rolling going on.”
Sam smirked. “I’m sure he took that well.”
“Oh, yeah,” Riley sarcastically. “You know how it goes...bring up satanism in the workplace? Always turns out like you hope.”
“...he kicked you out, didn’t he?”
“Flat on my ass within minutes. So, that’s all I got,” Riley finished as she closed her notebook.
“Well, we know the bodies are here, so, we just gotta get a look for ourselves.” Dean led the way as he opened the door into an office. An intern sat at the desk lost in his work and Dean cleared his throat. “Hey, so Dr. Dworkin is looking for you. Says he needs you in his office right away.”
“But,” the intern said doubtfully, “Dr. Dworkin’s on vacation.”
“Well, he’s back. He’s pissed and screaming for you. So, if I were you, I’d--” Dean trailed off as he whistled and nodded towards the door.
The intern rushed out in a panic as the hunter went on.
Once they were finally alone, Dean sorted his thoughts out with the others. “Hey, those Satanists in Florida. They marked their victims, right?”
“Yeah,” Sam answered. “Reverse pentacle on the forehead.”
Dean grabbed rubber gloves and handed them to his partners as they walked into the examination room. “So much fucked up shit happens in Florida, man.”
Riley checked the metal wall that held the drawers of recent corpses. Finding the right one, she pulled it out.
The body of a woman laid on the slab. She was covered in a sheet and there was a large medical container at her feet.
“Alright, open it up,” Dean ordered as he put his gloves on and met his brother’s gaze.
Sam cringed. “Fuck that. I’m not opening it. You open it.”
“Wuss,” he snarked. Dean picked up the container and took it to a nearby counter. He exhaled deeply before flipping the lid open. With a look of disgust on his face, he turned away for a moment before looking back down. The woman’s severed head rested inside. “Well, no pentagram.”
“Wow. Poor girl.” Riley looked almost distraught as she studied the woman’s face.
“Maybe we should, uh--you know--look in her mouth, see if those wackos stuffed anything down her throat. You know, kinda like the moth in ‘Silence of the Lambs’.”
As he pushed the container back in front of Dean, Sam replied. “Yeah, sure. Have at it.”
“No, you go ahead.” Dean looked over at his brother. “‘Put the lotion in the basket, Sam’.”
“And I’m the wuss?” Sam laughed.
“Oh, my god. I work with fucking children.” Riley wiggled in-between the two brothers to handle the task herself. She gently opened the woman’s mouth and looked inside.
Sam and Dean seemed to almost gag as she examined the head.
“Well, I don’t see anything.” Riley looked for another moment. “Wait. Look under her lip.” She raised the woman’s lip to expose her gums and pointed to what looked like a hole.
The boys leaned in to look.
She pressed down on the area and a sharp tooth came from the opening.
“Freaking vampires,” Dean stated.
“I’d say this case just got more interesting.”
------
The three headed for a local dive bar. Typical jukebox music flew through the air with the smell of assorted alcoholic drinks. It looked like a place where the locals all came to escape the world at the bottom of a bottle at the end of the day.
Sam, Riley, and Dean walked up the bar.
The bartender was a bigger built man. Didn’t look like someone you’d want to mess with. His goatee was perfectly shaped around his mouth. “What can I get for you?”
“Uh--three beers, please.” Dean pulled out his wallet to pay the man.
“Maybe you can help us out,” Riley said with a flirty smile. “We’re looking for some people. Maybe you’ve seen them? They would have moved here about maybe six months ago. Big time partiers, pretty rowdy, like to drink...”
The bartender found her intoxicating. He looked at her with a smirk. “Yeah. I think I know who you’re talking about. They don’t seem to be around much during the day. Bunch of night owls, I guess.”
Riley gave him a slightly bigger smile. “That’s exactly who I’m talking about.”
Dean looked over at Sam in a bit of surprise. They stayed quiet to let her work her magic.
“Barker Farm got leased out a couple months ago--real winners. They've been in here a lot--drinkers, noisy. I've had to 86 them once or twice.”
“Thank you so much for your help.”
“Don’t mention it,” he answered as he bit his bottom lip.
Riley seemed to saunter away to continue her ruse as they made their way to a table.
She then casually leaned in towards Sam and Dean. “We got eyes on us--six o’clock. I can feel him. Let’s go.”
With a nod of acknowledgement from the boys, they all went for the front door and left.
The three then turned to head down the quiet alley behind the bar. Finding a place to hide, they laid in wait, knowing they were being followed.
As soon as the stranger stalked their path, the Winchesters grabbed him from out of the darkness and pushed him against the wall. They held him there as Dean had a knife to his throat.
Riley stood to the side with her arms crossed.
“Smile. Show us those pearly whites,” Dean demanded.
“Oh, for the love of--you want to stick that thing someplace else? I'm not a vampire.” The stranger seemed much calmer than he should have been.
Sam frowned, unsure.
“Yeah, that's right. I heard you guys in there.”
“Guys,” Riley interrupted. “He’s telling the truth. He’s human.” She could only pick up on whether or not someone was completely human from time to time. But that night, Riley knew for certain.
The stranger looked back to the brothers. “Listen to the woman. Look--” he pulled up his gums to reveal nothing of note. “Happy?”
Sam and Dean reluctantly let him go.
Riley stepped in closer as she got a better look at the man. He had dark skin and was tall like the boys. His hair was short and had a similar goatee to the bartender’s. The man was probably in his late 30’s.
“So, you gonna tell us what you know about vampires, or is he gonna have to bring the knife back out?” Riley nodded in Dean’s direction who was itching to do it anyway.
“I know how to kill them.” He fixed his jacket to straighten himself up. “Who the fuck are you guys?”
------
The trio followed the man to his red, older, two-door car.
“Sam and Dean Winchester and Riley Munroe,” He let out a soft and breathy laugh of surprise. “I can’t believe it.” The stranger opened the door and slid out a rack from behind the seat. It was a full arsenal of weapons and hunting tools. “I’m Gordon. You know, I met both of your fathers before. They helped me out on a hunt. Partners from time to time, right?”
Riley nodded.
“Great hunters. I heard they both passed, I’m sorry. Those are some big shoes to fill. But from what I hear, you three fill ‘em--great trackers, good in a tight spot--”
“You seem to know a lot about our families.” Dean looked skeptical about the hunter.
“Well, word gets around. You know how hunters talk.”
“Yeah.” Riley replied as Dean spoke at the exact same moment, “no.” They locked eyes, with an intrigued expression.
Gordon raised his eyebrows. “I can see there’s some things your father never told you boys.” He looked over at Riley. “I’ve heard you were a spit-fire. Your reputation precedes you.”
“So, these vampires,” Sam started. “They were yours, huh?”
“Yep. Been on ‘em for two weeks now.”
“Did you check out that Barker Farm?”
Gordon shook his head and clicked his tongue. “It’s a bust. Just a bunch of hippie freaks. Though they could kill you with that patchouli smell alone.”
“Where’s the nest then?” Dean asked.
“I got this one covered.” The hunter pushed his gear back into the car. “Look, don't get me wrong, it's a real pleasure meetin' you three. But I've been on this thing over a year. I killed a fang back in Austin, tracked the nest all the way up here. I'll finish it.”
“C’mon, man. I’ve been itching for a hunt.”
“Sorry. But hey, I hear there's a Chupacabra two states over. You go ahead and knock yourselves out.” Gordon got into his car and looked out his open window as he started the engine. “It was real good meeting you, though. I'll buy you a drink on the flip side.” Without another word, he drove off into the night.
There was a moment of silence before Riley turned to the others. “...we’re still gonna follow him, right?”
------
The Impala had followed Gordon to the docks of a large lake not far from where they had met. The three were only a few minutes behind him as they closed the car doors. Water trickled and sloshed in the background and a sawmill sat at the edge of the water.
Sounds of a struggle came from the mill and the hunters looked at each other.
“That’s our cue,” Riley stated as they all went into a sprint in its direction.
A loud mechanical noise started to whir as they got closer.
They ran up the wooden ramp connected to the docks. Up on the main deck was Gordon. He was on his back taking hit after hit before the vampire began to lower a mechanical chainsaw toward the pinned hunter’s head.
Sam rushed to Gordon’s aid as he grabbed him by the ankles and yanked him away to safety.
Riley grabbed what looked like a large fishing spear off the wall and charged. She jammed the end of it into the creature’s stomach before jerking it back out. Grunting, Riley took one final swing that sent the vampire to the ground. She raised the weapon above her head and stabbed the creature in the gut as it pinned him to the plank of wood beneath him.
The monster shouted in pain as its rows of fangs were bared.
Dean hurried to her side, giving the vamp a few solid punches to the face. The loud saw roared on as the hunter began to pull it down towards them.
As Dean forced it into the creature’s throat, it wailed in terror before a large squirt of blood shot him in the face. Without missing a beat, Dean drove the machine all the way through its neck until there was a loud crunch as its spine was cut.
With blood splatter covering his face, Dean turned towards the others as the docks went silent.
Riley and Sam stood staring back at him, stunned.
“So, guess I gotta buy you that drink now,” Gordon said as he caught his breath.
------
Back at the bar they had found themselves at earlier, the four hunters found their seats. A fresh round of shots had just hit the table.
“Another one bites the dust.” Gordon raised his glass.
Joining in the hunter’s celebrations, Dean raised his in return as they clinked together. “Damn straight.”
“Dean,” the older hunter laughed. "You gave that big-ass fang one hell of a haircut, my friend. I mean, beautiful--absolutely beautiful.”
Sam and Riley sat quietly. Both were uncomfortable with the way things had ended at the docks and with how Gordon encouraged Dean’s behavior.
Riley’s eyes stayed on the stranger. She didn’t trust him. Unfortunately, her telepathy wasn’t happening naturally and it infuriated her that she couldn’t know his real intentions. Still, the energy Riley could feel pour from him was enough to have her ready to make a b-line for the door.
“Thank you.” Dean smiled with pride. He turned to his partners. “You guys okay?”
“We’re fine,” Riley added with a hint of bitterness.
Gordon let out a small chuckle as he took another drink. “Aww, lighten up, Rye.”
“They’re the only ones that get to call me that.” She continued to meet his gaze.
He put his hands up in surrender. “Just celebrate with us.”
Sam scoffed. “Right. Well, brutal decapitations aren’t always our idea of a good time I guess.”
“You guys gotta have more fun with your job--learn to enjoy it a little.”
“Listen,” Riley started as she stood to leave. “I’m not gonna bring down the party. I’ll just meet you back at the hotel.” She looked at Sam. “Wanna come with?”
“Yep,” he replied.
Dean threw the keys in Sam’s direction. “Buzzkills.”
The two grabbed their jackets and made their way to the door with Sam’s hand guiding her through the bar crowd.
------
The motel the hunters were staying at was reminiscent of an adobe home.
As the two walked from the car, Riley pulled out her key card and Sam noticed a sadness in her.
“Hey, would you wanna come in? I don’t think Dean’s gonna be back for a while. We could hang out, watch a movie or something.” Sam smiled at her. “C’mon. We haven’t spent time just the two of us in forever.”
Riley couldn’t help the small grin that grew on her face. “That’s not fair. You know I can’t say no to you.” He let out a laugh knowing he had won. “Just gimme a couple minutes, I’m gonna go take care of something and then I’ll meet you over there.”
Sam agreed as they went to their rooms.
Going inside, the room was decorated with a desert vibe. Sam placed the keys on a small plastic cactus and went to sit on the bed. He pulled out his cell phone and scrolled through it.
In the next room, Riley looked in the mirror and sighed. She needed a minute to herself. Lately, nothing had felt like it used to and tensions were still high. It exhausted her having to constantly block out all of the toxic emotions.
Riley even looked as tired as she felt. She studied her face for a moment realizing how drained she was. It felt as though she was going to cry all the time, and yet she almost never did. Maybe she didn’t have any tears left.
She quickly checked for any mascara under her eyes before turning off the lights to leave.
When she had finally made it to the boys’ room, Sam was finishing a phone call.
“Right. Okay. Well, thanks, Ellen. Talk soon.” He flipped the phone shut and let out a sigh. “You good?”
“Mm-hmm. I’m fine. Everything good with Ellen?” Riley sat on the edge of one of the beds with one leg tucked beneath her.
“Yeah. Uh--actually I called her about Gordon.”
She stared at him intently. “Why? What's up?”
“I don’t know, exactly. I just--something feels off I guess.”
“I’m right there with ya. Something’s up with that guy. I can feel it. He makes me really uncomfortable, Sam.”
He scoffed. “Yeah, that makes two of us. Maybe for good reason though. Ellen said he’s a good hunter, but that he’s dangerous.”
Riley’s eyebrows furrowed. “Dangerous? In what way?”
“Not sure. She just said that if he’s working a job, we should stay away and get outta town.”
“Well, that’s not concerning at all,” she added almost rolling her eyes. Riley paused as he nodded in understanding. “Look, I’m gonna go get a soda from the machine. You want one?”
“Sure. Thanks.”
Riley went outside and walked down the stretch of rooms. She put coins in the soda machine and chose two for her and Sam.
As she reached to get them, she heard a noise in the bushes nearby. Riley looked in its direction and waited completely still for a moment. When nothing more happened, she cautiously walked back to the room.
Looking around carefully, she opened the door to go inside.
“They didn’t have root beer, so you'll just have to deal.” Riley’s head was down as she immediately went to put the cans on the small table by the door. When she looked up, Sam was on the floor unconscious and a vampire stood beside him. “Sam!”
After taking in the shock, Riley charged at the creature ready for a fight. A grunt came from the back of her throat as she punched it with full force.
Little did she know, another was behind her and it clocked her in the back of the head with a rotary phone. It dinged as it connected with her skull.
------
Riley and Sam came to, only to find it was dark around them. There were sacks over their heads and gags in their mouths. They had been tied to chairs, bound with rope.
Sam grunted as he struggled to free himself while Riley took in deep breaths trying to remain calm.
Their eyes struggled to focus as their sacks were taken off their heads. They were in some kind of old farmhouse. All the surrounding furniture was mismatched and it looked like squatters were living there.
Both hunters looked up to see the bartender they had met earlier, standing in front of them. He opened his mouth and a full set of fangs grew from his gums. There was a guttural growl coming from his mouth as he leaned into Riley.
Her eyes challenged him as he grew only inches from her face.
“Don’t you fucking touch her,” Sam seethed as he fought against his restraints.
“Step back, Eli.” A woman came from around the corner and the bartender obeyed her command. She couldn’t have been much older than Dean. Her voice was surprisingly smooth, even with her order. The strange woman went to the hunters and removed their gags. “My name is Lenore. I’m not gonna hurt you. We just need to talk.”
“Talk?” Riley scoffed. “Forgive me if I get distracted by Eli’s teeth.”
“He won’t hurt you. You have my word.”
“Your word? Oh, great. Thanks.” Sam’s tone was harsh and condescending. “Listen, lady, no offense, but you're not the first vampire I've met.”
“We’re not like the others. We don’t drink human blood and haven’t in a long time. Now, we live off cattle blood. It’s not exactly ideal, in fact, it’s disgusting--but we get by.”
“What?” Riley asked in shock. “Why?”
“Survival. No deaths, no missing locals, no reason for people like you to come looking for people like us. We blend in. Our kind is practically extinct. Turns out we weren't quite as high up the food chain as we imagined.”
Eli’s breath was ragged as he struggled to contain himself. “Why are we even explaining ourselves to these fucking killers? They murdered Conrad tonight and celebrated.”
Lenore looked at him sternly. “What’s done is done.” Turning back towards the hunters, she went on. “We’re leaving town tonight.”
The young Winchester stared up at the woman that held them captive. “Then why did you bring us here? Why even talk to us?”
“Believe me, I'd rather not. But I know your kind. Once you have the scent, you'll keep tracking us. It doesn't matter where we go. Hunters will find us.”
“So, you’re asking us not to follow you.”
“We’re not hurting anyone. All we ask is the right to live, just like anybody else.”
With a look of disbelief, Riley tensed as she could hear the growling inside them. “Give us one good reason why we should trust you.”
Lenore got in the face of the sassy hunter. “Fine. I’m gonna let you go.” She looked at her and then at Sam, who was shocked. “Eli, take them back. I don’t want a scratch on either of them.”
A second vampire came in from a side room after hearing the command. He and Eli put the sacks over Sam and Riley’s heads again and stood them up. They led them out and back into the car they had taken them in.
------
Gordon and Dean sat at the table of the motel room. A map laid spread out in front of them as they went over what Gordon had already gathered through his research.
“This is the best pattern I can establish.” His finger traced a circle over a small area of the map. “It's sketchy at best. Problem is, we’re talking about an area with 35 to 40 farms. I’ve searched half of them and I haven’t come up with shit. The fuckers are good at covering their tracks.”
“Well, I guess we’ll have to search the other half.” Dean looked down at his watch. “What time is it? Where are those two?”
Gordon peered out the window. “Car’s parked outside. They probably went for a walk. Sam seems like the ‘take-a-walk' type.” His tongue darted out over his lips. “But, that Riley, though? Whoo. Girl’s feisty as hell. Not bad on the eyes either.”
“Yeah,” Dean said with a small smile. “I’m a lucky man.”
“Wait...” Gordon’s eyes lit up and he leaned into the table. “You and her?”
The Winchester nodded. “For the better part of a year now, yeah.”
Gordon whistled. “You gotta tell me, is she that fiery off the job too?” he asked as he shot Dean a look of approval.
The door opened and Sam and Riley walked in. They both stared at the two hunters at the table, irritated almost to see Gordon there.
“Where you guys been?” Dean asked.
Sam looked at his brother. “Can we talk to you alone?”
The older Winchester turned back to look at his new companion. “You mind chilling out here for a couple minutes?” Gordon shook his head and Dean got up to follow his family outside.
Walking down the steps, Sam waited until they were out of earshot. He glanced over at Dean as they walked into the parking lot. “I think we gotta rethink this hunt, man.”
“What are you talking about? Where were you?”
“The vamps found us, Dean. They took us to their nest.”
Dean’s eyes grew. “What? How the fuck did you get out? How many did you guys kill?”
“None,” Riley said as she stopped and crossed her arms. “They let us go.”
Shooting his eyes back and forth between the two, Dean appeared to be in disbelief. “Well, that doesn’t make any goddamn sense. So, where’s the nest?”
“We don’t know. We were both blindfolded. All we know is we went over a bridge at some point outside of town. But, Dean...” Riley’s hands found her pockets. “...we don’t think we should go after the nest anymore.”
“What?” Dean asked in shock. “Why the hell not?”
Sam added, “we don’t think they’re like other vampires. They’re responsible for all the cattle deaths. They live off animal blood instead of human.”
“And you believed them? No, man, no way.” Dean chuckled. “I don't know why they let you go. I don't really care. We find 'em, we waste 'em.” He began to walk back towards the room.
“Dean...” Riley started as she caught up to him.
“What part of vampires don’t you understand, Rye? It’s supernatural, that means we kill it. That’s the job. End of story.”
“No. That’s not the job, Dean.” She stared up at him, feeling her patience with Dean wearing thin. “We hunt evil. And these things aren’t hurting anyone. They’re not evil.”
Dean rolled his eyes. “Of course they’re killing people, that’s what they do, Riley. They’re not human, okay? We have to exterminate every last one of them. Gordon’s been on those vamps for a year now, he knows.”
Sam stayed quiet knowing that there was too much tension built up between the couple. The emotions were bound to bubble over. That heated moment in the parking lot was Dean and Riley’s first real conversation in weeks.
“Oh, Gordon?” she asked with sarcasm. Riley smiled finding his naivety humorous and she bit her lip trying to control her need to yell. “So, you’re just gonna take his word for it? Even though I’m telling you something different?”
“Yeah, I guess I am,” Dean said with certainty.
She scoffed and folded her arms again. “Unbelievable. You push me away for weeks and what do I do? I wait. I wait and I deal with your bullshit brooding all the time. When was the last time you even acted like we were together, Dean? Huh? Are we even together?”
Dean was annoyed with her question, “of course we’re still together.”
“Then what the fuck are you doing? Why don’t you trust me anymore? I’m a damn good hunter, Dean. Hell, I’m a fucking psychic for Christ’s sake. But you’ve benched me and acted like I’m invisible.” Riley began to shout a little. “If I tell you Gordon’s bad news, then you’re supposed to believe me!”
Running a hand down his face, Dean tried to grapple with his conflicting emotions.
Riley had already shut off the switch in her mind. In that moment, she didn’t care what Dean was feeling. She had stayed quiet long enough.
“Dean listen to Riley, man. Even Ellen says the guy’s bad news,” Sam added.
“Of course, you called Ellen.” Dean chuckled with frustration. “And I'm supposed to listen to her? We barely know her, Sam. No thanks, I'll go with Gordon.”
“Right, 'cause Gordon's such an old friend. You don't think I can see what this is? He's a substitute for Dad, isn't he? A poor one.” Sam was almost pleading with his brother.
“Shut the hell up, Sam,” Dean said with a small breathy laugh as he turned to leave.
The younger Winchester chased after him. “He's not even close, Dean--not on his best day. You know, you slap on this big fake smile, but I can see right through it. Because I know how you feel, Dean.” Pain swelled through Sam’s chest and he couldn’t stand Dean being in denial for another second as he raised his voice. “Dad's dead. And he left a hole and it hurts so bad you can't take it, but you can't just fill up that hole with whoever you want to. It's an insult to his memory.”
Dean smirked. “Okay,” he replied as he went to walk away. He then immediately spun around, his fist connecting with Sam’s face.
“Dean!” Riley yelled as she went to Sam.
The hunter stumbled before he looked Dean in the eye. “It’s fine, Rye. He can hit me all he wants. Doesn’t change a damn thing.”
“I’m going to that nest. You don’t wanna tell me where it is? Fine. I’ll figure it out for myself.” In a huff, Dean went up the steps back to the room.
Sam and Riley hurried behind him. When they all got inside, they saw that Gordon had left.
Riley looked at them both with worry. “Gordon went after them. We gotta stop him.”
“Really, Rye?” Dean asked in irritation. “’Cause I say we lend a hand.”
“Dammit, Dean.” Riley sighed and tried to calm herself. “Just, please--give me the benefit of the doubt here. You owe me that.”
“Fine. Where are the keys? I’m driving.”
Sam turned to the small plastic cactus he had put them on. They were no longer there. “Son of a bitch snaked the keys.”
------
With a grimace on his face, Dean worked the wiring to hot-wire the Impala and it sputtered beneath him. “I can't fucking believe this. I just fixed her up, too.” The car finally roared to life. “So, you crossed a bridge, is that all you got?”
Sam looked down at the paper map in his lap. “The bridge was four and a half minutes from their farm.”
“How do you know?”
“I counted.” The young Winchester traced his finger over the route. “They took a left out of the farm. Then turned right onto a dirt road, followed that for two minutes. Went slightly up a hill and then took another quick right and we hit the bridge.”
Dean nodded his head, pleasantly surprised. “You’re good. You’re a monster pain in the ass, but you’re good.”
Feeling she had nothing left to say, for the time being, Riley kept her mouth shut. She had had enough arguing for the night and was still too pent up.
Baby pulled from the motel parking lot and eased onto the main stretch of road.
------
As Sam, Dean, and Riley arrived at the farmhouse they scurried inside. When they found the main room, Gordon was there with Lenore. She was tied to a chair, beaten and bloody as Gordon held a knife to her. She seemed to be gasping for air as she struggled through the pain.
The three stood in horror at what they saw; Gordon was taking his time torturing her with satisfaction in his face.
“Hey, you guys,” Gordon said as he stood to greet the hunters. “Come on in.” He motioned for them though his demeanor was unsettling.
“Hey, Gordon. Uh--what's going on?” Dean asked.
“Just poisoning Lenore here with some dead man’s blood. She’s gonna tell us where her little friends are. You wanna help? Grab a knife, I was just about to start on the fingers.” Gordon drug the bloody knife across her chest and she cried. It seemed to sizzle and branches of veins grew dark and visible around it.
“Whoa, whoa, whoa, hey, let's all just chill out, huh?”
“Gordon put the knife down. Just step away from her, alright?” Sam ordered.
The older hunter threw his knife onto the table. “You're right. I'm wasting my time here. This bitch will never talk. Might as well put her out of her misery.” Gordon took out a much larger knife and unsheathed it. He held it to the light and admired it as it glistened. “I just sharpened it, so it's completely humane.” He turned towards Lenore with his knife in hand.
Riley took long, quick strides over to the injured vampire. “I’m letting her go, Gordon,” she said adamantly.
Gordon stopped her with a knife in front of her chest. “You’re not gonna do a damn thing.”
Stepping forward, Dean clenched his jaw and his heart skipped in his chest seeing Riley in danger. “Gordon, let’s talk about this,” he said as he walked around the table.
Sam stayed close behind Riley.
“There’s nothing to talk about, Dean. She’s a goddamn monster.”
Gordon’s voice was eerily calm to a point it made every hair on Riley’s body stand on edge. She stared Gordon in the eyes and though the unease in her stomach made her wish she were anywhere else, Riley didn’t flinch. She knew that the only monster in that room was the man looking back at her.
“I hear you, I get it,” Dean said sternly.
He chuckled. “Do you, Dean? I had to watch one of these filthy fucking fangs attack my sister. And it didn’t kill her...no.” Gordon shook his head. “It turned her. It made her one of them.” His eyes stayed vacant as if he felt nothing at all as he looked at the others. “So, I hunted her down and I killed her myself."
Shocked, Dean asked, “You did what?”
Grabbing Riley’s wrist, Gordon sliced his knife across her forearm. She winced as he held her still and reached to push the blade towards her throat.
Riley’s free hand held tightly to his wrist that gripped his weapon and she struggled to push it away.
Dean drew his gun and cocked it and Sam did the same, both aiming at Gordon. “Let her go.” Riley struggled to break free as the Dean shouted, “now!”
“Relax. If I wanted her dead, she’d already be on the floor. I’m just making a point.” The deranged hunter drug Riley over to the vampire. He squeezed her arm to get the blood flowing so it would drip down over the creature’s face.
As a drop fell on her cheek, Lenore gasped and her fangs released themselves. She snarled and hissed as everything inside her ached for the bleeding arm above her.
Gordon looked back and forth between the three. “You think she’s so different? Still want to save her? Look at her. They're all the same. Evil, bloodthirsty.”
Lenore whimpered as she fought against her every instinct. She soothed herself and retracted her fangs as she tried to catch her breath. “No. No. I won’t do it.”
“Do you even hear her, Gordon?” Riley asked with frustration. As his hold on her lightened, she pushed Gordon’s hand away and took a step back.
With his gun still raised, Sam hurried to Riley’s side. “We’re done here.”
Riley glanced down at the sick and broken creature before her. Lenore carried a curse, but she was no monster. “Get her out of here, Sam.”
Doing exactly that, Sam gave Riley his gun and went to pick up the badly injured woman. She groaned as he moved her and she nearly fell limp in his arms. Sam hurried her out of the room and to the car.
A still hell-bent Gordon went to stop him while Dean and Riley held their weapons ready to fire.
“Uh-uh. Uh-uh!" Dean warned him. Without breaking eye contact with Gordon, he spoke to the woman at his side. “Rye? You alright?”
“Yeah. I’m good.” Riley’s eyes slanted slightly as she grappled with the urge to shoot the insane hunter.
The Winchester made his way closer. “Gordon, I think you and I've got some things to talk about.”
Gordon scoffed in response. “You can’t be serious. You’re just gonna let her go?”
“I'm having a hard time believing it too, but I know what I saw. If you want those vampires, you gotta go through me.”
“Dean?” Riley’s voice was nervous. “What are you doing?”
“I’m good, sweetheart. But I’m gonna need you to back up. This is between me and the big guy.” Dean didn’t falter. He was ready for whatever Gordon would throw his way.
Riley hesitated. Still, she withdrew her weapon and stepped back.
“Fine.” The dark hunter answered as he jammed his knife into the wooden table.
Dean returned the favor by taking out the clip in his gun. Before he could put the weapon down, Gordon had charged at Dean and threw the first punch. Without hesitation, Dean hit him right back.
When Gordon stumbled, he grabbed the blade he had stuck into the table.
Riley’s eyes grew seeing the rearmed madman. She went to join the fray when Dean heard her coming up behind him.
“No.” His arm went out to block her. “Stay back.”
A still fearless Gordon swung his blade at the Winchester. When he missed, Dean grabbed him to shove him against the wall. His hand held tight to Gordon’s wrist as he slammed it against the door frame to release the weapon.
As the blade clattered on the ground, Riley went and grabbed it away.
Gordon and Dean clung at each other’s clothes, trying to keep the other at a distance.
“What are you doing?” Gordon asked through his shallow breathing. “You’re doing this for a fang? We’re on the same side, Dean!”
Through his gritted teeth Dean seethed, “I don’t think so, you sadistic bastard.”
Gordon thrust his elbow into Dean’s face to disorient him before he kicked his boot into the hunter’s chest.
Dean was sent backward and landed on a small coffee table. It broke beneath his weight and he groaned.
“You’re not like her or your brother. You’re a killer...like me.” Gordon’s words were unnatural and almost sinister.
When he had gotten close enough, Dean swiped his leg under Gordon to trip him onto the ground. Dean stood to get on top of him and his fist flew into Gordon’s face again and again.
Picking him up, Dean then shoved him into a bookshelf. Glass and other items on display shattered and fell over the beaten man. With two more final punches, Dean had weakened the crazy-eyed hunter enough to drag him to a chair.
Dean pulled a thick rope from his bag and threw it around the injured hunter. He wrapped it around him tightly and made a solid knot. “You know, I might be like you and I might not.” Fresh drops of blood sat on Dean’s lips as he bent forward to look at Gordon. “But you're the one tied up right now.”
------
Morning had come and shined over the farmhouse. Light leaked into the room through the blinds as a now alert Gordon sat glaring at Riley. She leaned against the wall in front of him as Dean paced keeping watch.
Outside, the sound of a car came through the silence of the sleepy early hours. Dean stared down at Gordon who had hate in his eyes for the hunter.
Sam walked in and greeted Riley with a hand on her shoulder. “Did I miss anything?”
“Nah,” Dean replied. “Not much. Did Lenore get out okay?”
“Yeah, they all did.” Sam shot a look at Gordon. He wanted him to know he had lost.
Riley looked over to at the clearly unhappy man in the chair. “Well, I guess that means our work is done here.” She smiled at him playfully.
“How you doin', Gordy? Gotta tinkle yet?” Dean walked around him back towards the table as he teased him. “Alright. Well, get comfy. We'll call someone in two or three days, have them come out, untie you.” He stabbed the knife back into the wooden table.
Sam asked, “you ready to go, Dean?”
“Not yet.” He took his time walking in front of the man he had bested. “Well, I guess this is goodbye,” Dean chuckled. “It's been real.” He looked down at Gordon one last time before punching him hard across the face.
The chair he was in fell backward and he laid stuck to it on the floor, groaning.
Dean fixed his jacket and sniffled. “That’s for putting your fucking hands on my girl,” he added before turning back around to his partners. “Okay, I’m good now. We can go.”
Riley smiled as Dean made his way back over with his bag over his shoulder. She waited for him to stop to hug her, only for Dean to continue to walk out and pass her by. Her heart dropped into her stomach and Riley cleared her throat, trying to stop herself from crying.
There was no denying it, things between Riley and Dean were painfully different.
They all headed down the steps of the farmhouse and began to walk towards the car. It was still quiet as birds chirped in the distance.
Riley’s boots crunched the dirt beneath them and she went on ahead of them.
Stopping, Dean sighed. “I wish we never took this fucking job. It just fucked everything up.”
“What do you mean?” Sam asked.
“I mean, just think about all the hunts the three of us have been on. All the things we’ve killed. What if we killed things that didn't deserve killing? You know? I mean, the way Dad raised us...”
Sam’s face softened. “Dean, after what happened to Mom? Dad did the best he could.”
“I know he did. But the man wasn't perfect. And the way he raised us, to hate those things--and man, I hate 'em. I do.” Dean bit his bottom lip as he tried to work through his thoughts. “When I killed that vampire at the mill, I didn't even think about it. Hell, I even enjoyed it.”
“...but you didn’t kill Lenore. And yeah, you could’ve. But you didn’t. That’s what matters.”
The sun peeked over the horizon and cast a glow over the fields and their faces as Sam and Dean continued towards Baby.
Dean nodded softly to himself as he stared back at the farmhouse, his eyes glistening in the early morning light. “Yeah. Maybe.”
------
Dean had gone out for breakfast a few hours later. He walked back into his and Sam’s room with a carrier of coffees and two bags; one Dean held in his free hand and the other hung from his teeth. Kicking the door shut behind him, he put it all on the table.
“Alright, they were out of chocolate donuts. Rye is not gonna be happy about that one. I got her glaze. You think that’ll work?”
He looked up at Sam who sat on one of the beds with his head hung. The young Winchester didn’t reply. In his hand was a small piece of paper.
“What’s going on, Sammy?” Dean asked as he went over to his brother.
Without even looking up, Sam held the paper out to Dean. As he took it, his brows scrunched in confusion as he went to read it.
I need some space. Please don’t come looking for me. I’ll call when I’m ready. I love you both.
xo Riley
Dean’s heart began to race as Sam uttered in an almost broken tone, “she’s gone, Dean.”
Turning on his heel, Dean rushed out the door and ran to her room. He banged on the door again and again with no reply. “Riley!”
Remembering he had an extra key, he hurried to get inside. “Riley?” The door swung open and the hunter felt his legs shake beneath him as he stared into an empty room. Her duffel bag, guitar case, and all other traces of her were gone.
A lump swelled in Dean’s throat and he ran his hands forward over his hair. He realized how deeply he must have hurt her.
Dean quickly took out his phone and dialed her number, his eyes large and panicky as he put it to his ear.
“The number you have dialed is no longer in service, please try your call again later.”
Dean shut the phone and put it to his forehead as the anger he felt towards himself exploded inside him. He flung the cell phone across the room. “Son of a bitch!” Dean yelled as he swung around and threw his fist into the wall.
As he barely made it out the door, he held on to the frame to steady himself. Dean stood looking off into the distance wondering how far she away she already was. He couldn’t contain the guilt and loss he felt as tears streamed down his face.
Riley was the one good thing to ever happen to Dean, the only thing that ever made sense besides his family.
He wiped his face and stomped back into his room. “We gotta go,” Dean stated firmly as he wasted no time and grabbed his things.
Sam stayed seated as he watched his brother frantically move around the room. “What? Go where?”
“After her. We gotta find her.”
Sighing, Sam replied, “she said she wanted space, Dean. Maybe we should just respect that.”
“What? Hell no,” Dean scoffed.
“Look, man, I’m just as broken up about her leaving as you are, but she doesn’t want to be followed.”
Dean couldn’t contain himself as he nearly shouted. “Sam, the demon is still out there and she could be in danger. Riley’s going through too much to be alone and I have to make this right. I have to fix this--” The pain in his face was obvious and Dean’s voice broke as he pleaded with his brother. “Please, Sam. You were right, okay? I fucked up.” Dean’s mouth fell slightly agape as no words came out and his eyes flooded again. “I--I can’t lose her, man.”
Sam ran his hand through his hair and lightly nodded his head. “Alright,” he agreed standing up to grab his things. “Let’s go bring her home.”

Good Cop, Bat Cop
Hey there, cultural appropriation moustaches. We're moving into the last leg of The Movement this week. In fact, we'll finish before Halloween with two weeks to spare. Hmm, might have to do something fun for that... But that's for future us to worry about~
Here's the cover:
Batgirl incoming! And she's brought the moon with her! A really nice shot of everyone on the roof, with a couple of odd bits. Like, how did Vengeance Moth get her chair up there? Roofs rarely have wheelchair access. Secondly, I think Mouse is trying to eat that welcome sign. I don't know why, but it's going to happen. Anyway, the neat part about this crossover is that it's still the same writer of both series. So there's no danger of them being written out of character or contradicting the main series!
I guess we should also note that this is still early in the New 52. So this Batgirl is Barbara Gordon, and her paralysis has been retconned away. It's probably not the place to rant about how bad that change is, how much better she was as Oracle, how DC largely ignored the other two Batgirls for years because of this, but I do hate this particular direction that took. One more bad New 52 decision! But we're gonna judge her here by how she is in this story and not bring the rest of that up unless relevant~
So we open with Batgirl arriving in town, noting what she finds odd about the city. No gargoyles, no signal in the sky, no cops. You may be surprised that it's the lack of cops she finds worrying. She reasons that's why this place has gotten so bad. Anyway, Batgirl is here to nab this guy Reese, a dreadlocked youth in a hoodie. She tackles him, punches him in the face, makes a couple quips. Classic Batgirl. But alas, her upper hand over Reese is short-lived, as he turns around and suddenly blasts Batgirl with a huge light beam from his entire face.
Meanwhile, the Movement group is out in... Well, it looks like a public bathroom, but I hope it isn't, because Mouse is stark-ass naked. He's very upset because the girls are insisting he bathe, and Burden is just there pointedly not looking at Mouse and completely mortified to see his "teats". I mean, Mouse usually goes around shirtless anyway, man, you should be more adverse to seeing his dingus. Virtue eventually calms him by reading his love, and also has to get in the shower with him, because he's never used shampoo before.
Batgirl recovers from the Solar Beam to the face and wakes up at the feet of a crowd of onlookers. All of them are wearing the silver masks of the Movement, telling her to "leave that boy alone". Clearly no one has the full story here, and Batgirl doesn't have time to tell them either. Reese takes the opportunity to get away, the light blast having destroyed his hoodie, leaving him in a much more noticable white bodysuit with yellow accents like the sun over it. Gee, I wonder if this is connected to his powers~?
Mouse gets fully cleaned up and is in a suit. Virtue even makes him wear shoes, which he protests strongly to the point that I'm uncomfortable. I'm just saying, "feel the lovely filth between my toes" is not a phrase I ever need to read again, 'kay? He finds Tremor, who is assisting in cleanup, and reads his letter he wrote aloud. He then offers her a box of candy, which just has a dead rat in it. She screams, and the rest of the Movement can hear her screaming from several tunnels away. Unfortunately, the comedy portion ends when Vengeance Moth drops by to let them know there's a bonafide superhero in town.
Having lost track of Reese, Batgirl decides to stop by a local information source. Cops aren't who you go to in Coral City. Do you remember Pastor Mike from, like, seven or eight issues ago? He's the guy in town who puts you in touch with the Movement. It works, too, because Virtue comes flying in before Pastor Mike can even reply. She and Batgirl already begin to butt heads, but that's not even the harsh part. Katharsis comes in, swords out, and insisting that she and Batgirl have a rematch. This isn't gonna be pretty.
With some of Batgirl's internal monologue here, her pro-cop stance does make sense when you remember her father is Jim Gordon. And, like, say what you will about real-life cops, but I will not hear slander against Jim Gordon, so I get where she's coming from. But anyway, Batgirl gets a good shot on Katharsis, knocking the wind out of her, and she calls time. The rest of the Movement enters, and Mouse (still in suit, but sans shoes) swarms her up in his rats. Batgirl says she's not here to pick a fight with them per se, but she does have business. So Virtue does what she does best: invite her out for milkshakes.
So we cut over to Captain Meers and Officer Yee. They've had some revelations regarding Virtue, if you recall. They found what restaurant she's been working at, based on the Captain's deductions. Her real name is Holly Rae Hunter, which seems to be an alias. Anyway, Virtue had seizures all her life, and when she was eleven, she didn't survive it. Her dad, depressed, robs a convenience store in a "suicide by cop" gambit and dies. And that cop... was Meers himself. Yee reasons that Virtue survived somehow and she's been stalking Captain Meers. Well. Ain't that some shit~
Over at Virtue's favourite place, she and the gang are having milkshakes with Batgirl (who is still in costume, and therefore looks hilarious in the brightly-lit setting). To fill us in on the previous events, she asks Katharsis why she left Knightfall's organisation. Seems Knightfall took things farther than Katharsis was comfortable with, and Katharsis is the asshole of the team. So you can imagine. In fact, you don't have to, because Katharsis says it outright: Knightfall cleaved off the leg of a carjacker the pair of them caught together. Not ideal.
So, after an awkward exchange with Moth that I won't rant about, Batgirl explains why she's in Coral City chasing this guy Reese. He's a metahuman, obviously. Control of solar radiation. He tried the heroic vigilante thing, as most folks who get powers would. Tried to stop a mugging, ended up killing two of the assailants and put the third into the critical burn ward. Katharsis makes a reference to the "Stand your Ground" law, and Batgirl still thinks he should be held accountable. After all, most private citizens don't carry around a solar-powered nuke. And I suppose that's fair.
So they're at an impasse. The Movement don't want to give up a guy to who they basically see as one step down from a cop, and Batgirl won't go without taking Reese in. So Katharsis knocks Batgirl out with a surprise attack, and Virtue plans to get leverage over her by taking her back to the base and unmasking her. And meanwhile, as the comic ends, a couple of actual cops investigate a disturbance, where they find Reese. Refusing to come quietly, Reese nukes the two cops into ash and wanders off muttering how he's a hero and we'll all see. Hoo boy.
This will be probably the last arc of the comic, and it’s shaping up pretty good so far. Considering Katharsis debuted in Gail Simone’s Batgirl series, it kind of brings the whole thing back around in the end. They’ve set up a nice dilemma here, really put the two forces in conflict. And the ongoing background plot of the mysteries behind Virtue are all the more intriguing. Maybe after we do our Halloween thing, we’ll check out those original Batgirl issues as sort of a closer. Not the whole series, but just the mini-arc Katharsis was in~

Hey, if it is ok to talk about DC now, have you met Vengeance Moth yet? I've read some comics from The Movement somewhen halfway through last year, and was really happy with both the entire group (they were pretty diverse), and Vengeance Moth (totally awesome chronically ill wheelchair user) in particular. I would have sent you this ask back than, but I knew that you don't want to talk about DC, so I didn't.
I mean, I still don't like them and I'm not going to give them any money… But is the character currently in anything?
