Today: The Movement from DC Comics

Inclusive superhero group done right.

The Movement is a 12 issue comic book series published in 2013 and 2014 by DC Comics as part of The New 52. It is probably best known on Tumblr for featuring the heroine Tremor, who is canonically asexual, but it has so, so much more to offer.

The Movement is a group of disenfranchised teenagers in Coral City, led by Holly Ann Fields aka Virtue. The series can be kind of divided into three story arcs: Their fight against the corrupted police (issue 1-8), Batgirl visiting (issue 9-10), and Burden’s fight against his brother (issue 11-12).

Superheroes being used as a metaphor for oppressed groups is nothing new, but what makes The Movement special is that they really are an incredibly diverse group, featuring many different identities. We have:

Virtue / Holly Ann Fields, who is a Black lesbian,

Tremor / Roshanna Chatterji, an asexual Indian immigrant,

Mouse / Jayden Revell, who could be argued to have an intellectual disability, though nothing concrete is actually said,

Katharsis / Kulap Vilaysack, a Laotian immigrant,

Burden / Christopher, who is gay,

Vengeance Moth / Drew Fisher, a former addict and wheelchair user with muscular dystrophy

Things Bruce Wayne does at Justice League meetings that 100% confirm the fact that he is a Dad.

Makes attempts at referencing pop culture to try and relate to the younger members. The most memorable instance is when he told Flash to “keep running up that hill.” (Dick laughs for an hour when Wally tells him about it.)

Does the iconic groan/grunt whenever he sits down in his chair. It’s hilarious, but no one is dumb enough to laugh at the Batman.

Ensures that the background music exclusively plays Matchbox 20 and Nirvana. Diana is the only one who enjoys this.

Actively complain about how everyone is ��ruining his floor” whenever they push back their chairs.

On that note, he also complains about crumbs getting everywhere whenever someone is snacking.

Will (covertly) ask Clark for grilling tips during breaks. Oliver overhears this once and has to go lay down out of shock, because Batman? Grilling?

Declines requests for new equipment/tools/etc. because they “have that at the Watchtower.” This inevitably leads to complaining from the entire JL.

Always, without fail, will ask Hal if he’s changed the oil in the spacecraft recently. Hal doesn’t know whether to be offended or not.

Randomly interrogates members on if they’ve messed with the Hall of Justice’s thermostat. They have not, in fact, touched the thermostat.

Someone needs to stop me because I literally cannot get the image of Bruce being the Typical Dad (tm) of the Justice League.

Thinking about Tim getting super mad with Bruce about something and instead of shouting at him he just goes ‘okay then’ and leaves for a bit.

Bruce is a little worried considering Tim’s ability to make plans, but he brushes it off quickly.

The next day he walks into the lounge room to find Damian ‘I Hate Tim Drake’ Wayne hugging Tim ‘Damian Is Not My Equal At Anything’ Drake.

He’s naturally terrified of what this could mean but nothing can prepare him for seeing his youngest son lift up a 50lb Boa Constrictor at least twice his height with he biggest, most unnerving smile on his face.

Tim just gives Bruce a blank look and mouths ‘see what I can do?’

Bruce apologises to him immediately.

Hes tall and huge and HEAVY and he is so overly active that he has to maintain an insanely high caloric intake to make sure his body doesnt collapse from the strain of everything. He will eat virtually anything but he is spoiled from the best takeout Gotham has to offer: 11$ shrimp and broccoli from the chinese food spot that closes at 4am- among other things.
