Disabled people are never obligated to quell others curiousity
"Just over 6.8 million community-resident Americans use assistive devices to  help them with mobility. This group comprises 1.7 million wheelchair or scooter  riders and 6.1 million users of other mobility devices, such as canes, crutches,  and walkers." (Disability Statistics Center).
While the disability community is diverse, ”the disabled guy" stereotype generally involves being in a  wheelchair. It's visual storytelling shorthand. There are more specific disability  stereotypes, such as being blind giving you a 6th sense, and autism accompanied by savant syndrome.
The wheelchair-bound stereotype is the most prevalent in my life because my form of cerebral palsy has always included mobility aids. I had the most exposure to the  disability community at camp every summer.
Even through those experiences of  making friends and seeing what they could do, I still saw it as a failure when I first sat in a wheelchair.
Just because you know a disabled person, an Asian  person, etc. it doesn't mean you can't be ableist or racist. Accepting an individual is different than being aware of how stereotypes might affect your  behavior. People don't like to acknowledge our failures.
As a child, I was at least as "curious" about other disabilities as my able-bodied peers. Everyone learns from the media. I have the same questions about specific disabilities, such as visual impairments or hard-of-hearing people, that others without disabilities have.
However, that doesn't make it right for me to ask invasive questions of other disabled people.
Internalizing ableism is complex. In the media, a hierarchy of identities is reinforced, and I am set up to  internalize where society "fits me in”, among the disabled. "Disability hierarchy is  not about disability type alone, but rather a complex, intersectional differential  valuation of disabled people regarding who can and cannot or should and  should not be accommodated and integrated into a society based on various  factors." (Schalk, 408)
I can only speak from my experience. What I know about  disability stereotypes and what questions annoy me the most do not necessarily transfer to other people.

Bill Denbrough is what you would consider your normal teenage boy.
Well accept for one thing, he's a wheelchair user.
And now he has to go to public school for the first time since he's been one. He didn't know what to expect from it, but most certainly not falling for the resident Trashmouth, who annoyingly won't stop calling his chair a 'hot rod.'
I suck at summaries but I think it's good !

Here we are with another #mybookalphabet letter — P for Paul McCormick, the teenaged artist, athlete, wheelchair user, and romantic lead of my debut contemporary fantasy novel KNIFE. . In an earlier #booksthatmademe post I shared how I got the inspiration for Paul’s character after reading A SWIFTLY TILTING PLANET. But there were a few more ingredients that went into his portrayal too, including the two quadriplegic writer friends I made on FidoNet back in the 90’s, early in my writing journey. I asked them to read an early draft of KNIFE and give me feedback, because I knew I might be treading on thin ice when it came to Paul’s portrayal, and didn’t want to be careless or glib about it. Joe Chamberlain’s comment that “he’s a bit of an ass, but a believable ass,” gave me the reassurance I needed. . Because Paul is, a bit. Instead of a saintly role model or inspiration, he’s an angry and frustrated young man still reeling from the accident that broke his spine and cost him the use of his legs. He feels like his dreams have been shattered and he’s lost everything that made his life worth living, so he makes a few self-centered and even self-destructive choices in the first half of the book. He is, after all, a teenaged boy. . But Paul’s loneliness and isolation also serve as the catalyst for a secret, extraordinary friendship that will change the course of his life — and my faery heroine’s, too. As Knife and Paul get to know each other, they start to bring out the best in each other… and discover that the things they once thought they wanted in life might not be what they really need, after all. . The illustration of Paul drawing Knife — one of my first and favorite pieces of fanart — is by Irrel (@paolaspixels). . . . #disabilityinclusion #disability #wheelchairuser #disabilityinfiction #fairies #fairy #fae #fairytale #faery #fairybooks #faeriesofinstagram #magical #enclaveescape #enclavepublishing #yabooks #IReadYA #yareads #speculativefiction #christianfantasy #noordinaryfairytale #faeryrebels #knife #knifebook #paulmccormick https://www.instagram.com/p/B_LDRfMg-XP/?igshid=1wdcmdxv3jl5z

I have wanted to read Oracle code for a long time. Barbara Gordon as wheelchair using hacker and crime solver Oracle it's probably my favorite character in corporate superhero comics , Marieke Nijkamp is queer and disabled, though they are not wheelchair users themselves. They have written and talked about disability in ways that I find very resident.. Manuel Preitano''s pencils and Jordi Bellaire 's colors look great. There are some wonderful things about this book, from accurate depictions of the kinds of skills one learns in a clinical rehab independent living training scenario, there are great moments of friendship and conflict between diverse sampling of disabled characters, but there is a rather glaring flaw in the decision to treat that same rehab and some of the same staff therapists and members as villains conducting eugenics experiments on the rehab residents . On the one hand, this ground was the story in conventional superhero trope and there is certainly a history and present of people with disabilities being subject to all kinds of medical experiments without their complete active consent, but I have a big problem with the way it's presented in the story.  Finding the secretlab where the disappearances and experiments are taking place takes away from showing Barbara actually going through rehab, and especially in processing the psychological aspects of her trauma in a way that is very essential to the story that the creators seemed to be trying to tell. Worse, those moments they do capture some spirit of rehab and independent living style therapy and pedagogy are undermined by later development In the last two panels I excerpted I think it's a real problem they have the physical therapist giving out actually sound advice about trying hard not being able to advance the timetable of healing rehab and only to have be revealed as a eugenical villain is jarring This framing does allow Babs and Company to fisticuff literal prejudice which is a superhero thing but Babs suspicions about the efficacy of independent living and Rehab are somewhat Justified and that's alarming #theoraclecode #dccomics #mariekenijkamp #wheelchairusers #babsgordon (at Gotham City) https://www.instagram.com/p/CCjtfSEBIi0/?igshid=4cdwfsu8ywsc

The disabled costume dilemma
The X-Men franchise seems like the only superhero team I know almost nothing  about. I ate up the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) movies. Even DC heroes  like the Flash and Shazam are some of my favorites. I am the biggest nerd for Star Wars and Star Trek. But the only thing I know about X-Men is the  two character names Professor X and Wolverine as well as the two actors who portray them. I can understand the concept of mutants possibly  representing multiple minority groups, but I don't have a more specific opinion. Even though I know little about the X-Men franchise, I did  consider being professor X for Halloween one year. But not because he uses a wheelchair and is physically disabled. My Halloween goal was to find a costume where I could wear a suit. I just like dressing up and  didn't want to have to buy a costume that year.
When researching the Professor X costume, I started to second guess myself. I'm far from a bald white guy. As an Asian-American, I can sometimes struggle to find a character that I like that also looks like me. I gravitate toward  Spider-Man because he wears a mask, and many interactions of Spider-Man are  with people of color. (For example, Miles Morals) It would require more than a nice suit if I wanted to be Professor X. I'd have to use my wheelchair, which I had a strained relationship with at the time. I was still struggling to see mobility aids as a source of freedom. I thought,

"Am I being dishonest  pretending I'm wheelchair-bound for Halloween?"
Halloween is, of course, the holiday to pretend. But I have also had experiences  where friends have assumed something wrong if I chose my wheelchair over crutches. People know I can walk. I was overwhelmed by the feeling that I would be pretending or choosing to look "more disabled" when most people can't do that. I don't even use a power chair with a joystick like him. At the time, I associated a power chair with being "even more disabled or limited" That's not true. People with disabilities can not be ranked.

I just struggled to see myself in my wheelchair because it lead to feeling like I’m being forced to adapt to life even more than I already have to on crutches. Even though I have ankle braces and  walk with crutches, I still "pass" pretty well as an abled body person in a  crowd because I can stand and walk among them. Giving that up, even for a day, felt wrong.
How my wheelchair changes someone else’s perspective on how disabled I am doesn't matter as much to me. The trouble I would still have today would be finding a bald cap that matches my skin tone because I'm not white. At the end of the day, Halloween is a fun time to pretend and dress however you want.
