🎩COVER REVEAL ♦️for The Wonderland Trials by my dear friend @saraellawrites releasing from Enclave Publishing in July 2022! Sara is an incredible author, so excited for this! This is the first book in a YA dystopian fantasy Alice in Wonderland retelling duology, The Curious Realities. The book is available to preorder in Limited Edition Hardcover. ***Link to preorder: https://amzn.to/3JRr5A The book: Solve the clues. Face your fears. Survive the Trials. All Alice Liddell wants is to escape her Normal life in Oxford and find the parents who abandoned her ten years ago. But she gets more than she bargained for when her older sister Charlotte is arrested for having the infamous Wonder Gene—the key to unlocking the curious Wonderland Reality. Soon, Alice receives a rather cryptic invitation to play for Team Heart in this year’s annual—and often deadly—Wonderland Trials. Now she has less than twenty-four hours to find her way into Wonderland where nothing is impossible... or what it seems. The stakes are raised when she discovers players go missing during the Trials each year. Will she and her team solve the clues and find the missing players? Or will betrayal and distrust win, leaving Alice alone in a world of her own? Follow the White Rabbit into this topsy-turvy fantasy where players become prey, a sip of the wrong tea might as well be poison, and a queen’s ways do not always lead one where they ought to go. #thewonderlandtrials #saraella #thecuriousrealities #coverlove #enclaveescape #enclavepublishing #yaretelling #aliceinwonderland #bookish #coverreveal https://www.instagram.com/p/CY4DxCelCW_/?utm_medium=tumblr

Guess what flew in to my mail this week? . Isn’t it gorgeous? I know the finished hardcover is sure to be even more beautiful, but it’s exciting to have the ARC in my hands! . Today it’s been so weirdly cold that we had snow flurries (why. WHY.) but I’m realizing more and more that August is only three months away! As we get closer to the release date I’ll be sharing more preorder incentives and other goodies, but right now I’m still in the planning and prep stages and it’s making my head whirl. So much to be done and so much more that I *could* do... . Have you participated in any cool preorder campaigns or giveaways recently? What kinds of incentives do you enjoy? . . #rjandersonwriter #enclaveescape #enclavepublishing #yabooks #IReadYA #yareads #speculativefiction #christianfantasy #fairybooks #flightandflametrilogy #swift #swiftbook #arc #advancedreaderscopy #cornishpixies #cornishpixie https://www.instagram.com/p/B_8O1hSArD0/?igshid=u0zdm8ypveg9

If you’ve noticed I’ve been a little less active on IG lately, here’s why: I got my first round edits on Book 3 of the #flightandflametrilogy last week from my editor at #enclaveescape, and I’m trying to get them finished by next Monday. . It’s not going half as quickly as I’d anticipated, but I’ve got nobody to blame for that but myself. See the one teeny little red box on the right hand side? That’s my editor’s very minor suggestion. See the wall of green changes around it? That’s all me. . *cough* I... may be a little obsessive when it comes to line-editing. The quest for the perfect adjective, verb or turn of phrase is never-ending, but I can’t resist trying anyway. I actually enjoy this more than any other part of the process, to be honest: I find it curiously satisfying to fuss over little details and get all my word-ducks in a row, free from having to worry about the bigger picture... . If you’re a writer, what‘s your favorite part of the process? Do you thrill to the unlimited possibilities of the first draft, or revel in the opportunity to revise and make the story even better? Do you enjoy polishing up your word choices and hunting down typos, or do you chafe at having to keep going back over your story when you want it to be done? . . . #editing #writinglife #revision #writercommunity #christianwriters #writingprocess #speculativefiction https://www.instagram.com/p/B--xJGbgrPm/?igshid=1n49yu5ax4frf

I was thoroughly delighted by @tombstone_crepsley_cosplay’s new post today, because it was perfect timing — today’s entry in #mybookalphabet is K is for Knife! . Knife is a character that I sketched when I was 16, years before I ever wrote a word about her. But as soon as I’d drawn this a fierce-looking, dagger-wielding young woman with white hair and dragonfly wings, I knew she had a story and I was going to tell it someday. It took me six more years of pondering to figure out exactly what that story would be, and another fifteen of off-and-on revising and resubmitting — including two total rewrites — before the book was good enough to attract the attention of an agent and publisher. But thanks to some wonderful early encouragement and feedback from Claire Eddy at Tor Books, I never stopped believing that *someone* in publishing would want to hear Knife’s story if I could just figure out how to tell it right. . As those of you who’ve read the whole #noordinaryfairytale aka #faeryrebels series know, Knife goes through a lot of dramatic experiences and equally dramatic changes over the course of the books. But she’s still one of my favorite characters to write, at any age and in any setting. She makes a couple of cameo appearances in the #flightandflametrilogy, and I’m working on a short story that involves her right now — though at a different time of her life and through very different eyes than we’ve ever seen her before… . . . . #rjandersonwriter #enclaveescape #enclavepublishing #noordinaryfairytale #speculativefiction #christianfantasy #fairybooks #fairybook #fairiesofinstagram #booksaremagic #bibliophile #igreads #instaread #lovetoread #booksarelife #bookaddicts #whattoreadnext #readallday #bookworms #booksofinstagram #bookaholic #booknerd #yareads #yafantasy #fantasybooks #fantasybookseries https://www.instagram.com/p/B_-7FyegdK8/?igshid=19ygg1kszx1jl

Since childhood I’ve loved reading fairy tales, folk tales, and mythology. In the course of researching my first three faery novels set in England and Wales, and my upcoming Flight and Flame trilogy set in Cornwall, I came across all kinds of fascinating tidbits of fairy lore! . One of the things that interested me most was the strong connection between British faery lore and Christianity. Modern readers tend to associate fairies with paganism, but many of the 18th-19th century writers who compiled collections of fairy stories and folklore were devout churchgoers and clergy, and the way they wrote down the stories reflects their religious beliefs. In fact, many fairy legends draw on Bible stories and concepts to explain where fairies come from and why they behave as they do. . That’s not to say these folk tales were good theology, because they often featured muddled ideas that were based on tradition and superstition, not the Bible. But they weren’t mocking or opposing Christianity by any means, and in the Victorian and Edwardian eras “fairy stories” were considered perfectly wholesome and even suitable for teaching good morals to children. It wasn’t until the 1960’s and 70’s brought a resurgence of interest in paganism and “New Age” spirituality that fairy stories (and fantasy in general) came to be seen as suspect by conservative Christians. . Since the boom of fairy-inspired children’s, YA and adult fantasy in the 1990’s and 2000’s, modern authors have tended to portray fairies as bloodthirsty, sensual, amoral creatures who are either monstrous, or perilously beautiful, or both. But the odd mixture of homely kindness, mischief and mystery found in many old British folk tales about fairy folk is not so popular anymore. . Which kind of fairies do you prefer to read about? Do you have a favourite book or story about fairies? . . . . . #Fairies #fairy #fantasy #fae #fairytale #faery #faeriesofinstagram #magical #rjandersonwriter #enclaveescape #enclavepublishing #yabooks #IReadYA #yareads #speculativefiction #christianfantasy #fairybooks #flightandflametrilogy #swift #swiftbook https://www.instagram.com/p/B9r_kzJgET9/?igshid=f7p6lrqs09rb

Here we are with a new #mybookalphabet post: J is for Joan the Wad! . In Cornish folklore, Joan the Wad is the queen of the piskeys (the spelling I settled on for my #FlightandFiretrilogy - it’s also frequently spelled pisky or piskie, and of course pixie). An old English rhyme describes her as a capricious will-o’the-wisp, sometimes teasing human folk and sometimes guiding them to safety: . Jack O’Lantern, Joan the Wad, That tickled the maid and made her mad, Light me home, the weather's bad. . Generally, though, Joan the Wad is seen in Cornwall as a figure of good luck and protection, and Jack O’Lantern is her king or consort. So when I was creating the world of the Cornish piskeys for SWIFT, I decided on “Joan” as a title rather than a personal name for their queen. . It’s also, though I didn’t plan it this way, a small tribute to my mother, a true queen in every way — whose parents emigrated from Redruth in Cornwall to Timmins in northern Ontario a few years before she was born. They named her Joan, and she in turn gave me Joan as my middle name — that’s the J. in my initials. But my mother had never heard of Joan the Wad until she read my book, so I felt happy to have given her back a little lost piece of her Cornish ancestry. . Q: Do you have a favorite folk character or creature in your family background? I’d love to hear about it in comments! . . . #joanthewad #cornishpixie #cornishpixies #cornishpisky #cornishpiskey #spriggan #spriggans #folkloreandfairytales #britishfolklore #fairies #fae #fairytale #faery #faeriesofinstagram #fairybooks #rjandersonwriter #enclaveescape #enclavepublishing #yabooks #IReadYA #yareads #speculativefiction #christianfantasy #flightandflametrilogy #swift #swiftbook https://www.instagram.com/p/CAHGG2Xgu2x/?igshid=113e0jszkl6a8

"An inventive addition to faery lore with a classic fantasy feel. Ivy is a plucky, passionate heroine, and the immersive setting is complemented by a well-rounded cast of characters and a twisty, keeps-you-guessing plot. Charming, gripping, and masterfully told." --Joanna Ruth Meyer (@gamwyn), author of Beyond the Shadowed Earth . How time flies — preorders for the hardcover of SWIFT went up last month, now it’s time for the e-book! And a little bird told me that the ARCs will be out soon... . It’s been over a decade since my debut novel came out and I’ve written ten more books (well, none and a novella) in the meantime, but it never stops being a thrill to be able to share my stories with new readers! I love the beautiful cover art Enclave’s given this series and am excited to know I’ll be able to share even more good news in the next month or so. But in the meantime, if you love contemporary fantasy, folklore, and/or wish you could visit Cornwall — or if you’d just like to read an exciting story of suspense, mystery, and adventure with a dash of fantasy and wonder — you can preorder SWIFT in e-book or limited edition hardcover now! . . . . #rjandersonwriter #enclaveescape #enclavepublishing #yabooks #IReadYA #yareads #speculativefiction #christianfantasy #fairybooks #flightandflametrilogy #swift #swiftbook https://www.instagram.com/p/B_YpMBMAlSn/?igshid=187umqu01wiil

We’re halfway through #mybookalphabet! Today it’s M for Martin, a major character in my third book of the #noordinaryfairytale trilogy, ARROW. . Martin started life as a character I never thought would need a name, let alone an elaborate backstory. Halfway through REBEL I needed a random faery thug to attack Timothy and make off with his wallet, so I created a lean blond assassin-type who made a brief, spectacular entrance and an even more dramatic exit, and figured that was the end of it. . Except the same character unexpectedly turned up again near the end of the story. And he turned out not only to have a name, but a sly sense of humour and a questionable amount of loyalty to his evil mistress. By the time he showed up yet again early in the next book, I threw up my hands and just let him do his thing. . Martin is, not to put too fine a point on it, a manipulative little weasel (sometimes literally!) — at the start of his personal journey. But as I (and my heroine Rhosmari) gradually discovered over the course of ARROW, there’s also a heart behind Martin’s glittering charm, and a surprisingly complicated history that this book only begins to hint at. . All in all, Martin is a little bit Howl, a little bit Jareth, a little bit Steerpike, and the rest simply his own flippant Shakespeare-nerd self — and he’s also become one of my most popular characters, though you might have to look a bit beyond his behaviour in ARROW to understand why. Let’s just say, for now, that the last time we see Martin in that book is not the end of his particular story, and that he has a way of turning up in unexpected places… . . . . #rjandersonwriter #enclaveescape #enclavepublishing #noordinaryfairytale #christianfantasy #fairybooks #igreads #readaholic #bookaholic #yalovin #instabooks #readersofinstagram #bookaddict #becauseofreading #bibliophile #instareads #instabook #bookworm #bookstagramfeature #bookishfeatures #yafiction #booknerdigans #yalit #booksofinstagram #ReadingTime #yabookstagram #yabooks #fairyfriday https://www.instagram.com/p/B_qzO1kA63f/?igshid=f1u4z6mzj1m9

TELL ME: Are you a bold, impulsive adventurer, or more of a careful, plan-ahead type? What would it take to push you into taking a big risk? . I’m asking because #mybookalphabet letter for today is R for Rhosmari, the heroine of ARROW — who is definitely a cautious planner. But she also cares deeply about doing what’s right and protecting the people she loves — and that drives her to leave the safety of her magical Welsh island home and step into a strange and often dangerous new world. . Rhosmari is described early in the books as having deep brown skin and thick, “clove-coloured spirals” of natural hair, because at the time I wrote ARROW I’d seen very few descriptions or portrayals of faeries who weren’t white. I also made her the most beautiful faery in all the books and gave her the most gorgeous butterfly wings (they’re Blue Morpho, if you want to look them up!). . Writing Knife, the heroine of Book 1, was fun because I could count on her to do the bravest and most reckless thing in any given situation. Linden, the heroine of REBEL, was full of passionate feelings and naive but well-meaning impulses that could easily get her (and Timothy) into trouble. But Rhosmari… well, I’m not claustrophobic, but otherwise she’s a lot like me. She’s got a scholar’s temperament, not a warrior’s, and she prefers to think carefully before she acts. She’s wary of trusting the wrong people, and the worst thing she can think of is making a mistake that hurts her and those she loves. . So of course, that’s exactly what happens to her in ARROW. Because no matter how well prepared you try to be, life seldom turns out quite the way you plan… . . . #fairies #fairy #fantasy #fae #fairytale #faery #fairybooks #fairyfriday #faeriesofinstagram #magical #enclaveescape #enclavepublishing #noordinaryfairytale #faeryrebels #yabooks #IReadYA #yareads #speculativefiction https://www.instagram.com/p/B-0Bm3HAmbX/?igshid=r5s103ryphag

Here we are with another #mybookalphabet letter — P for Paul McCormick, the teenaged artist, athlete, wheelchair user, and romantic lead of my debut contemporary fantasy novel KNIFE. . In an earlier #booksthatmademe post I shared how I got the inspiration for Paul’s character after reading A SWIFTLY TILTING PLANET. But there were a few more ingredients that went into his portrayal too, including the two quadriplegic writer friends I made on FidoNet back in the 90’s, early in my writing journey. I asked them to read an early draft of KNIFE and give me feedback, because I knew I might be treading on thin ice when it came to Paul’s portrayal, and didn’t want to be careless or glib about it. Joe Chamberlain’s comment that “he’s a bit of an ass, but a believable ass,” gave me the reassurance I needed. . Because Paul is, a bit. Instead of a saintly role model or inspiration, he’s an angry and frustrated young man still reeling from the accident that broke his spine and cost him the use of his legs. He feels like his dreams have been shattered and he’s lost everything that made his life worth living, so he makes a few self-centered and even self-destructive choices in the first half of the book. He is, after all, a teenaged boy. . But Paul’s loneliness and isolation also serve as the catalyst for a secret, extraordinary friendship that will change the course of his life — and my faery heroine’s, too. As Knife and Paul get to know each other, they start to bring out the best in each other… and discover that the things they once thought they wanted in life might not be what they really need, after all. . The illustration of Paul drawing Knife — one of my first and favorite pieces of fanart — is by Irrel (@paolaspixels). . . . #disabilityinclusion #disability #wheelchairuser #disabilityinfiction #fairies #fairy #fae #fairytale #faery #fairybooks #faeriesofinstagram #magical #enclaveescape #enclavepublishing #yabooks #IReadYA #yareads #speculativefiction #christianfantasy #noordinaryfairytale #faeryrebels #knife #knifebook #paulmccormick https://www.instagram.com/p/B_LDRfMg-XP/?igshid=1wdcmdxv3jl5z

Next up in #mybookalphabet, featuring quotes and behind-the-scenes tidbits about my published novels — it’s Y is for YARROW! . Yarrow is not only a medicinal plant with a wide range of uses, it’s a character name that’s been floating around in my faery universe for a long time. Originally it was the name of the Oak’s healer in KNIFE, but I ended up changing it to another plant name in revisions. Years later, though, as I was writing SWIFT, I needed a name for the Delve’s healer — and since the female piskeys of Cornwall also have plant names, the answer was obvious. . As soon as I named her, Yarrow’s personality became clear to me. She isn’t a major character in SWIFT, but she is certainly a significant one — and she plays a bigger role in later books, particularly the third in the trilogy. She’s a quiet, serious young woman with a lot of responsibility on her shoulders, and though she doesn’t always make the right choices, she’s always trying to do what she thinks is best for the piskeys who depend on her herbal skills to heal them. . Right now there’s a big focus on healing skills in our own world — and with good reason. Health care workers are so important, I’m glad to see them getting more respect and appreciation right now (even if I wish it were under better circumstances!). .
Do you have a favorite healer character from the fantasy books you’ve read? . SWIFT is coming in August 2020 from #enclaveescape and is available now for preorder - see link in my bio! . . #fairies #fairy #fairybooks #fantasy #fae #fairytale #faery #bookstagram #bookish #swift #swiftbook #flightandflametrilogy #rjandersonwriter #enclavepublishing #yabooks #booksarelife #bookobsessed #readmorebooks #yalit #speculativefiction #christianfantasy #christianfantasybook #august2020 https://www.instagram.com/p/B97xYzFAubJ/?igshid=1nrz2ea0dr32n
