Jimmy stood in the doorway, his usual confident demeanour softened by concern as he looked at Thomas. He took a step inside, closing the door gently behind him.
"Ah, Mr. Barrow, you know me well enough. I don't need much of an excuse to avoid working," Jimmy replied with a lopsided grin. He moved closer, pulling up a chair beside the bed and sitting down, his eyes scanning Thomas's face and the still-healing bruises with genuine worry. "How are ya holding up?"
He leaned back in the chair, trying to appear casual but unable to hide the tension in his posture. "Can't imagine how boring it must be, stuck in 'ere all day. I brought you something to read, thought it might help pass the time," he said, pulling a small book from his pocket and placing it on the bedside table. He wasn't about to admit, he'd popped down to Thirsk to buy the book as he had nothing in his own room to lend to the male.
Jimmy's expression softened further as he met Thomas's eyes. "I know it's been rough, what with everything that happened… and, well, how I've been. I'm sorry, Mr. Barrow. I truly am. But I'm 'ere now, and I wanna help in any way I can. You need anything, you just let me know, alright?"
He reached out, a hesitant but warm gesture, patting Thomas's arm lightly. "And don't worry about the work. Mr. Carson won't miss me for a few minutes. Besides, Mrs Hughes said that I could come and see you."
Tumblr media
after the events at the thirsk fair thomas was healing up well, although he had mostly been sleeping for the first few days. a week in, the smaller of his cuts had begun to heal, bruises turning from angry purple to a sickly shade of yellow. it would be another three weeks before he could fully return to work — his cracked ribs ensured that, the pain down his left side was still almost unbearable at times, the skin still tender, mottled purple bruising in the shape of a boot betraying where the thugs had kicked him.
still, for all the pain and trouble, at least thomas had gotten something out of the whole affair. jimmy kent was to be his friend again... after a year of snide remarks, cold shoulders and avoidance that hurt almost as much as the physical beating he'd recieved at the fair, each and everyone one like a punch to the heart... things were okay now, between them, things had been set right. and that had to account for something, at least.
Tumblr media
but, right now, thomas was bored. a week of bedrest and he had seen enough of his small attic room to last a lifetime. he wanted to get up, he needed to shave, he wanted to have a proper bath, he wanted something to do. sitting up was a struggle, the metal cot groaned and creaked under the shifting of his weight, aching muscles screaming in protest as the underbutler slowly moved, swinging his legs over the side of the bed and bracing himself for a moment. the pain in his ribs spiked and twisted, causing a sharp hiss to escape from between his teeth — his stomach churned and he felt sick, worried for a moment that he'd become reacquainted with his breakfast...
there was a short knock at his door before it opened, and thomas glanced up at his vistor, his friend, and couldn't help the slight smile that tugged at his lips, small and questioning.
❝ ... jimmy...? shouldn't you be workin'? ❞

Thoughts on My Adventures with Superman S3 TEASER IMAGES (yes I know I'm EXTREMELY late on this one)
Tumblr media
Clois and Kimmy are back! AHHHHHH it's been So long, They look so cute!!!! ^w^
Tumblr media
New intro, Mixy's back, Lex is Bald, Cyborg Superman, and NEW CHARACTERS!? OMG Next season is Absolutely going to be Insane, I'm hoping to see more DC characters show up and maybe even see more sibling Dynamic between Clark and Kara, because last season they were absolutely cute together. Also Jimmy and Kara NEED to get together this season, I don't care what anyone says I NEED to see them together, FINALLY a Supergirl relationship that doesn't involve her being with Brainiac, because that was just 🤢 I'm Also hoping to hear some Future slang in this like "Crash" and "Shrap" mainly because we're getting Superboy, and It REALLY seems like Superboy will be from future, so having him say stuff like this would Really be blast, which brings me to my Next topic.
Tumblr media
I've seen a lot of people's theories circulating online about How this could possibly be Lois and Clark's kid from the future, and I gotta say, I ABSOLUTELY Love this idea for 2 reasons, 1 if this is True then that IMMEDIATELY means he's come here for 2 reasons, 1 we could Definitely be seeing the Death of Superman play out this season. Since we're already getting Cyborg Superman and because one of the last episodes Last season was called The Death of Clark kent, so it would only make sense for this to be called the Death of Superman, if we're heading in that direction, leading to the whole Superman Legacy arc where multiple people took up the mantle of Superman, such as STEEL, Cybor Superman and Even Superboy. If we're going to be seeing this then that means he's either here to probably stop his father from dying, or just coming back to see and meet him before his Inevitable Death, which would REALLY Hit hard for us if that's the case. Also ya wanna know what it Really reminds me of, let me just get this straight for a second to see if I got the whole story Right, "A Super hero's child comes back from the future to See their Dead relative in order to get to know them before their eventual passing, and maybe even try Live up to their Legacy " Now where have I seen this before....? 😏
Tumblr media
Once again They continue to Improve upon ideas that HAD Potential, but were executed poorly. Hopefully they Don't drop the ball on this one ^^ Now onto reason 2, if Superboy is from the future then that means he had to have gotten here by Something right? Maybe a Time Bubble 😏
Tumblr media
THAT'S RIGHT! I'm suggesting that Mabye we could be seeing the Legion of Superheroes, being possibly introduced this Season, and that Superboy is a founding member, and if that's the case, that would be ABSOLUTELY Insane, and a Great move on DC'S part in my opinion. but those are just my thoughts, let me know what you think, Do you agree?

(SPOILERS if you haven't seen the show yet):
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Lois Lane has a cut out clip of Vicki Vale. Vicki Vale is a journalist in Gotham City. Her first appearance was in Batman #49 (1948) as seen in the panel here (W: Bill Finger, A: Lew Sayre and Bob Kane, I: Charles Paris, L: Ira Schnapp).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Looks like Jimmy is a fan of Legend of Zelda Majora's Mask. Good video game taste.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Jimmy mentions a psychic starfish and the one starfish in the DC universe who is psychic is Starro the Conqueror, who's first appearance is in Brave and the Bold 28 (1960) (the cover art here is done by Mike Sekowsky, Murphy Anderson, and Ira Schnapp) and has the power to mind control people.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Lois, after barging into Perry White's office about a story, mentions Mt. Simonson. This is a neat name drop to Superman: The Man of Steel writer Louise Simonson, one of the nicest comic book writers you'll ever meet. She helped co-create John Henry Irons a.k.a Steel with artist of the Superman: The Man of Steel comic, Jon Bogdanove (really hope we get to see Irons in this show too).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Jon Bogdanove also gets a name drop here as does...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Dan Jurgen, comic book writer and artist on the Superman comic in the 90s (also one of my favorite Superman artists).
Now who are these kids that call themselves the Newskid Legion? Well, they are a VERY deep DC cut and reference to the Newsboy Legion back in the 1940s. The group was created by Joe Simon and Jack Kirby, LEGENDARY comic book creators.
Tumblr media
The page here is from Who's Who: The Definitive Directory of the DC Universe #16 (1986) with the art by Jack Kirby and Karl Kesel. Most of the Newskid Legion is named after the Newsboy Legion members
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Gabby and Big Words here share names with their Newsboy Legion counterparts as does Flip Johnson...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
who shares names with Walter "Flip" Johnson here on the cover of Superman's Pal Jimmy Olson #137 (1971) which was done by Jack Kirby, Neal Adams, and Gaspar Saladino.
Tumblr media
Patty, the cartoonist of the Newskid Legion homages this panel from Adventures of Superman #500 (1993) (W: Karl Kesel, P: Tom Grummet, I: Doug Hazelwood, C: Glenn Whitmore, L: Albert DeGuzman), the first appearance of Superboy, Conner Kent/ Kon-El.
Tumblr media
But who is the one below that drawing? We'll his name is in Big Word's word puzzle, in the show. It's Jim Harper, the Guardian.
Tumblr media
Jim Harper becomes the Newsboy Legion's legal guardian despite their causing trouble for him. The page here is from Star Spangled Comics #7, the Newsboy Legion and the Guardian's first appearance, by Joe Simon, Jack Kirby, and Whitney Ellsworth. You might've seen the Guardian on the recent Young Justice cartoon.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
When Lois, Clark, and Jimmy go investigate about the smuggled robots in Metropolis, Jimmy makes a reference to super intelligent gorillas in France. This is a subtle hint at Monsieur Mallah, the Doom Patrol villain who will be in the show along with his partner, the Brain. Both made their first appearance in Doom Patrol #86 (1964) .
Tumblr media
The cover art here is done by Arnold Drake, Bob Brown, and Ira Schnapp.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Later in the episode we see Clark receive his powers and he is surrounded with electricity, giving off Superman Blue vibes when in the comics, Superman gained electricity powers and became Electric Blue Superman who's first appearance was in Superman #123 (1997) (cover art by Dan Jurgens, Joe Rubenstein, Patrick Martin, and Todd Klein.

MAWS Episode 4!
Tumblr media
It’s fair to say that My Adventures With Superman started on a high note and has been getting better with each episode, but this episode took things up to a new level:win
I love that the beginnings of Clark and Lois’ relationship is ultimately founded on their shared commitment to hard-hitting journalism over celebrity infotainment, even if they’re still very much learning the ropes and struggling to overcome setbacks.
Turning Dr. Ivo/Amazo/Parasite (interesting that they’re mashing these villains together into one dude) into a vile techbro who gentrifies working-class communities and uses crime to further his empire, and who becomes a supervillain because Superman’s fundamental altruism completely revolts his Randian belief in self-interest and personal gain - which fits perfectly into the whole idea of Parasite as a villain who steals from others to benefit himself - is a really smart idea.
I like that Jimmy’s alien obsession becomes plot-relevant and he even gets the glimmerings of a character arc when we see the conflict between “three best friends” and a new couple with a third wheel.
Most important point below the cut, b/c it’s real spoilery:
Lois using her journalistic skills (and red-string conspiracy board) to figure out that Clark Kent is Superman is a great move this early in the game. It demonstrates her chops as a reporter (which get undermined if the deception goes on too long), it complicates the non-love triangle (Lois is suspicious of Superman but is romantically interested in Clark, but gets the vital clue because Clark gave her his jacket which was symbolic of their shared moment on the stairs and after, but it reveals that Clark has been lying to her which is a big issue for her), and it advances her own character arc around wanting to prove herself against her father by succeeding as a reporting by putting her to the test of what she’s going to do with this knowledge.

Note
for the hc ask: Lois!!!
happy lois lane appreciation sunday!
Headcanon A:  realistic
she calls kon "squirt" no matter how much taller than her he gets. he's always her little guy. he's not her son, but they're family. she's pretty protective of him in a way that surprises even herself.
Headcanon B: while it may not be realistic it is hilarious
the real reason she has so many different designs across different runs is that she's constantly pulling on disguises because she keeps getting banned from various premises for poking her nose in.
Headcanon C: heart-crushing and awful, but fun to inflict on friends
she'd kill for clark. she knows it'd break his heart if she ever had to, but she also knows she would do it without regrets. even if he wouldn't want her to. she doesn't like to think about it, but she knows herself well enough to know that she would do it.
Headcanon D: unrealistic, but I will disregard canon about it because I reject canon reality and substitute my own.
she would not?? name her son?? after sam fucking lane???? jonathan samuel kent you were named after two of the bravest... uh... well one of them was a great guy and the other orchestrated the genocide of nearly all of the survivors of your father's people. happy birthday, son! name that kid after like. fuck idk. perry?? jimmy? john henry?? Batman: The Animated Series, 138 (Nov. 13, 1992) - “Christmas With the Joker” [Production order #02]
Written by: Eddie Gorodetsky Directed by: Kent Butterworth
This is the episode where…
The Dynamic Duo race against the clock to capture the Joker on Christmas eve, so that Batman can finally watch ‘It’s a Wonderful Life’ (yes, seriously). Oh yeah, and there are also innocent lives at stake. Then again, two of those are cops so… let’s just say there are lives at stake and leave it at that.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Breakdown
It’s Christmas Eve at Arkham Asylum, as the inmates work happily together, decorating the communal Christmas tree (aw!). And who should climb the ladder to mount the star? None other than the Joker himself. And if you’ve already guessed that he’s about to employ the time-honoured tradition of converting a tree into a literal-rocket, with which to launch himself through the roof, and toward freedom, then you guessed right! In fact, that’s surprisingly accurate of you.
Meanwhile… Robin has made a shocking discovery, Batman has NEVER seen ‘It’s a Wonderful Life!’ [Evidently, Robin has been under the impression that the brooding vigilante billionaire he works for is a big “Holiday Spirit” kinda guy.] So, since the criminal element seems to be taking the night off (probably catching up on their gift wrapping), Robin convinces his begrudging partner to watch Jimmy Stuart oppose the ruling class. Unfortunately, at the precise moment the Dynamic Couch-Potatoes turn on the television, The Joker successfully hijacks EVERY channel (to be fair that happens a lot in Gotham), to broadcast his very own live Christmas Special!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
So here’s the deal: the Joker has kidnapped Commissioner Gordon, Detective Harvey Bullock, and news reporter Summer Gleeson to stand in as his own surrogate Christmas family (since he has none of his own), who he intends to murder on live television unless Batman and Robin successfully complete a list of deadly tasks at inconvenient Locations. The tasks in question involve A) preventing a train full of passengers from hurtling over a blown-up bridge, B) Shutting down an observatory that’s been repurposed as a laser-cannon (obviously), C) defeating an army of giant weaponized robot-nutcraker-soldiers at an abandoned toy factory, and finally… D) preventing the three hostages from falling into a vat of molten liquid (classic). Unsurprisingly, Batman comes out on top, but not before taking a pie to the face, serving a stark reminder that victory always comes at a price.
Anyways, with the Joker subdued, our heroes head back to the mansion to finally watch ‘It’s a wonderful life,’ whereupon they reflect that life IS pretty Wonderful! …Which, as anyone who has seen the film would know, is a remarkably tone-deaf takeaway for a billionaire to arrive upon. Hopefully Alfred can use this as an opportunity to begin a more constructive dialogue.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Verdict
I loved this episode as a kid, mainly because it featured both Robin and the Joker, and also because I was (as are most children) easily impressed. Sarcasm aside, I’m not going to come down too hard on this episode, but it’s a fairly weak entry of a generally top-tier show. It doesn’t help that the animation is sloppier than usual, especially when you compare it to the Pilot (this one being produced immediately after). To be fair, each episode was produced by different animation houses, and sometimes the preferred ones were booked up. Consequently, the quality in animation could fluctuate a bit, particularly during the first season which pumped out a whopping 60 episodes. Nonetheless, this is some of the gnarlier animation on the show as a whole.
I’m more inclined to forgive sloppy animation when a story is strong enough, but ‘Christmas with the Joker’ comes up short in that department too. Again, it’s a perfectly suitable episode for kids, and about as inoffensive as you can get, but the actual plot is pretty damn thin, and little too silly for my taste. I'm perfectly happy with a more whimsical story when it's done well, there are a decent handful of episodes that lean on physical comedy quite effectively, but this outing feels more like an off-brand Looney Tunes special featuring batman; The gimmicks are a lot zanier than usual, and the gags all feel more-than-a-bit tired (although I’ll give points for the pie-to-the-face bit).
Perhaps I’m being a bit of a Scrooge about it, but this one just falls a bit flat for me. At the very least the episode is responsible for giving us Mark Hamill as the Joker (and Loren Lester as Robin), so I’ll take the silver lining, but I think don't think it’s unfair to rate this at…
2 stars (out of 5)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Parting Thoughts
Dastardly Logistics/1 - 'O TannenBOOM: I’ve often thought that supervillains always seem to have alarmingly unencumbered access to funds and resources. It’s one of those conventions I’m perfectly happy to embrace as part of the fun, nonetheless I can’t help being amused by the implications of all these elaborate weapons and death traps. Take the Joker’s Christmas tree escape-rocket, for example. It’s not exactly a small “tree,” so how did he build it without anyone knowing? What are the logistics of smuggling a fuselage and jet propulsion system into a prison for the criminally insane, and then assembling and disguising it, without anyone noticing? Did the guards not find it odd when they found a three story fern that no one ordered? Or did he replace the real tree with his Faux-Tree, and if so, what happened to the original?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Dastardly Logistics/2 - The Animated Conspiracy: Obviously the Joker is paying people to do these things for him, considering the whole episode takes place within the timeframe of a single night. Still, I’d be curious to know how he manages to secure funding for all this. I don’t doubt the money is stolen, but I find it hard to believe that he’s laundering it from his cell in Arkham. Where would half of this stuff even be manufactured? The way I see it, the majority of the Bat-rogues must all be backed by a mysterious sponsor, pulling the strings from the shadows. Whatever the truth may be, there are unanswered questions lying in the heart of Gotham City, pointing to an insidious plot that predates even the ‘court of owls.’
Hey Robin, are you high? How in your right mind could you POSSIBLY be surprised that your partner, a man famously known as the “Dark Knight,” who regularly employs torture tactics during his illegal interrogations, would somehow give a flying fuck about ‘It’s a Wonderful Life.’ This is the same man who put you through rigorous combat training, some of which presumably took place on-the-job against opponents with loaded firearms, while you were still an adolescent. And you’re surprised he hasn’t seen your favourite movie? I would have been utterly shocked if he had. Maybe take a break from your combat drills, and invest a little more of your energy brushing up on the observational skills your mentor is so famous for.

The Irritable Bowel Showdown competitors have been decided!!!
Thank you for your patience, everyone! The participants have been chosen, the bracket has been tentatively created, and preparations for Round One are underway!!!
Thank you for the feedback on my poll about the number of participants. Although the option for accepting further submissions had the most support, after narrowing down the eligible participants to 102, I decided it would be best to continue with the current number so the tournament could begin! As a result, some characters with a higher seeding will automatically move to the second round to accommodate the awkward number of competitors.
The full roster is as follows:

This week saw the release of yet another episode of "My Adventures with Superman", and I wanted to put out my thoughts on it. It would probably be better to wait for the full season before commenting on the show, but I think its fun to react to each episode as it comes out. Also helps that so far the show appears to have an episodic structure, which makes it more appropriate to judge each episode on its own. And I also have to mention that there's some obvious spoilers here.
Tumblr media
Here's my thoughts on episode 3 :
- The opening scene of the show is pure Superman. There's a disaster happening, there are people in danger, Superman rushes in to save the day, while Lois jumps in to try and get an interview out of him. It's great stuff. - I'd like to see more of how the in-universe public reacts to Superman. In the real world, we've gotten so many superhero movies and cartoons, that we've gotten used to superheroes just being an omnipresent thing and that seems to be bleeding into superhero adaptations where the existence of superheroes is taken for granted. But really, the existence of superheroes in fiction should be treated as a big deal in-universe, and I hope the cartoon shows that aspect more in future episodes. It's a good way to make the world and setting feel more realistic. - Clark Kent doing an semi-awkward "Hero" voice as Superman is a nice bit of characterization. It shows that the character is still finding himself and settling into his role as the new champion of Metropolis. - There's a nice bit where Lois asks Clark to do a Superman impression and Clark naturally switches to his "Superman voice", before realizing that he might end up giving his secret identity away, so he pivots to a "Clark Kent doing a Superman impression" voice. And to think that there are people out there who have suggested that the idea of superheroes having secret identities is outdated. Why would you get rid of that idea when you can have fun moments like this one ? - The trailer of the show indicated that the show uses three primary Comic Books for inspiration : Superman Birthright, All Star Superman and Man of Steel (1986). I am...not the biggest fan of Man of Steel, and I hope the influences of that comic are kept to a minimum. On the other hand, Birthright and All Star are solid stories. This episode seems to also take inspiration from Superman Smashes the Klan, particularly in how Superman's powers are manifested by him having visions and strange flashes where his senses are suddenly heightened.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Hey, if the show is taking inspiration from my favorite Superman story of all time, then that's definitely a good sign. - We're introduced to a few more supporting characters here in the form of Steve Lombard, Cat Grant and Ronnie Troupe. They're given a comedic introduction which didn't quite land for me, but the episode moves at a brisk pace, so it doesn't feel like an issue. - And we have Clark, Lois and Jimmy doing some good old fashioned detective work to track down the bad guys. I like how each member of the trio gets to contribute in figuring out the bad guys' plan. It makes it clear that while Superman may be the one with the powers, the other characters are heroes in their own right. - The show introduces three new villains. Rough House, Silver Banshee and Mist. They're given just enough characterization and quirks to not feel generic. So far the show seems to be leaning on the villains being more down to earth and small scale, which works well considering that the show does have a “Year One” feel to it.
- We already have fanboys complaining about how the villains don't look exactly like the comics or how their power sets are different from the comics. It's really funny because both Livewire and Silver Banshee are at best, C-list villains in the comics. They don't have more than five notable stories between the two of them not just in current comics, but just in general. I'm not saying that the characters don't or can't have fans, but lets not act like its blasphemous for an adaptation to change the characters to suit the story. - The action scene is fun enough, though it does kinda feel like a repeat of the pilot episodes. The villains wreck havoc, Superman shows up and gets beaten down by the villains, the villains lose control of their tech, which throws them off just in time for Superman to put them down. Let's hope that future episodes don't fall into that formula. - Like the pilot, there's a scene where Superman gets a vision of aliens and robots on other planets. I know that the show is teasing Brainiac as the possible big bad, and the visions are sure to lead into that. My theory is that Brainiac may be connected to all the high-tech weapons that the villains have been using in the past few episodes. Brainiac has always been a tech-based villain, so it makes sense for him to be involved in this way. As a Transformers fan, this reminds me of the Transformers Animated show. That show had a futuristic setting with all sorts of advanced robots being integrated into the society in some way. This technology was manufactured by the fictional Sumdac Industries, and its eventually revealed that the owner of that company was reverse engineering the technology from the salvaged remains of Megatron, the main villain of the Transformers franchise. This was in turn a plot point inspired by the Transformers movie. I think that "My Adventures with Superman" might do something similar with Brainiac. - We get a romantic flight sequence between Superman and Lois ! I never get tired of those, and the romance continues to be adorable. - When Lois interviews Superman, he tells her that he doesn't know too much about where he came from or who he is, and that's definitely a good thing. I feel like so many Superman adaptations just skip this aspect and have Superman immediately know that he's from Krypton, that his name was Kal-El and that his parents names were Jor-El and Lara, that the planet was destroyed, etc. Usually this is done by having a Jor-El hologram to give convenient plot dumps to Superman. However, you could make a compelling story out of Superman slowly uncovering his origins and heritage, and I'm glad that the show might be going in that direction. - There's still no appearance or even mention of Lex Luthor, Superman's one true archenemy. I'm fine with that. I think there's more than enough Superman vs Lex Luthor stories in both comics and other media. The show feels more fresh and unique by focusing on other villains. And that's episode three. This show continues to be solid and entertaining and while it has its flaws, they're not as egregious as to get in the way of my enjoyment of the final product.

Also: trying to decide the future of Kryptonians in the Titanic Trio world. I could say Jordan and Lois eventually make it work. I could also have Kara get together with someone (I could even do Kara x Dick (making their kid be Flamebird would be fun), though I'm partial to Jimmy x Kara). But I also need to decide what K Metal, which regularly removes powers from Kryptonians and gives them to humans. Also Kryptonian tradition is girls take the father's whole name as a last name which on earth could end up wordy and confusing, while after they get married they go solely by their first name, which might also confuse people when, after marrying, Karen Starr is like actually my name is just Karen. No, no last name. Although I could also see her going "okay I want to keep Kryptonian culture alive, but also Starr is a translation of El and keeping that last name alive is more important so husband you are taking my last name" but if the husband were Dick that might be conflict because he ALSO lost his family and wants to keep the family name alive.
If Kara marries Dick (or Jimmy), then they could
a) mass hyphenate, squish every single last name together into one giant name
b) create a ship name out of their last names and use that
c) just keep their old last names and don't change anything
d) Kara can drop her old last name and just go by her first name while whoever is her spouse keeps their last name
f) One partner can adopt the other's last name and drop their old one
Does Chris Kent exist pre-crisis? I dont think so, but if so then he could be another option for more Kryptonians on Earth

OLD KENT ROAD:
MONOPOLY'S DUD SQUARE
Old Kent Road : Monopoly's dud square. The cheapest and only property south of the river. At Bricklayer’s Arms, I alight with the crowd and pause in the shadow of the orbital. Here, pavement breeds new pavement. Slabs of grey-green asphalt spill out like wet turbot skins - complete with chewing-gum tubercles. Like a noose, the elevated motorway pushes people out. Tesco bags blow against the perimeter. A sour blue-raspberry condom licks my heel.
10:27
I plan my zigzagged passage across the pedestrian islands. If you are to inhabit the city, you learn to perfect your dance with death. I make it to Island B before the black Honda turns left. I fast-walk to Island C. I pull down my hood and reply to a text. By an inch, I miss the side view mirror of an articulated lorry. I breathe out: Ellipsis. Michel de Certeau would read these maneuvers as a prosody poem. Under the traffic’s imposing rhyme scheme, I intercept and interrupt. ‘Asyndeton cuts out: it undoes continuity and undercuts its plausibility.’ My walk is constituted of  footstepped stutters - Deletions. I dart between cars - Slash. I mount the pavement- Hyphen. I write a text of ‘enlarged singularities and separate islands.’ My rhetoric is hinged on spatial elements, street furniture, and their references. I weave between bollards and cat’s eyes. I scamper between the lights of the cars - two streams, red and gold.
10:29
A pair of Nike Jordans straggle from a power line. I interpret this as a hanging - a gibbeting. Walking is forbidden here. I use the adverb ‘here’ because how else does one condense this terrain? This junction of stifled oxygen. This junction of cars that hurl as if launched from the barrel of a gun. Between traffic, I hear the electricity hum through the power lines and across the white sky. Whilst there isn’t the soil to grow a weed, red roses repeatedly appear at the railings. A photograph of a young boy. A note: ‘Jimmy, we miss you. I should have held your hand.’
10:31
Tumblr media
My feet sidle at the entrance. Somewhere in the depths of the corridor, a man sits like a large toad. His craned shoulders are framed by a ravine of dismembered circuit boards, computer carcasses, and hard drives. The narrow inlet is thick with the warm olfactory of plastic and solder. He looks up from his work and calls out to me.
‘If you want to take my picture, you can leave.’ His eyes hang through thick rimmed glasses.
I push my phone down into the side of my leg and come clean.
‘I did want to take a photo but you wouldn’t need to be in it …’
He sighs, puts the laptop down, and begins to inch through the clutter.
‘What is it about this place that you people like? I’m not a celebrity.’ He smiles and kicks a small satellite dish from the doorway. It spins and cracks on the last step.
I collect the pieces and hand them to him.
‘I have two Ebay accounts. One sells hardware, the other sells the stuff I can’t fix.’ He drops the shards of fibre-glass into a cardboard box and steps out into the rain.

Quinnipiac University Holds the 12th GAME Forum
Tumblr media
Quinnipiac University holds an annual student-run financial conference called Global Asset Management Education (GAME), which brings together students and financial experts to delve into important issues in the finance industry. The university first launched the forum’s inaugural conference in 2011. More than 1,300 students from over 130 universities attended the 12th edition of the GAME Forum, which took place at the Sheraton New York Times Square Hotel in March 2023.
Held over the course of two days, the forum featured more than 100 speakers from successful financial services providers. Attending students had the opportunity to participate in workshops and other professional development sessions to explore various dimensions of the financial investment landscape. The 2023 keynote speakers included Rockefeller Global Family Office chief investment officer Jimmy C. Chang, Barclays Americas head of mergers and acquisitions Larry Hamdan, and vice president of transaction banking Hannah Del Vecchio from Goldman Sachs. The Wall Street Journal, Delphian Trading, and M&T Bank, among other organizations, sponsored this year’s GAME forum.
On the first day of the forum, three keynote panels tackled topical issues in the finance industry such as investment strategies and global asset allocation. Chang participated in the Outlook for Markets and Investment Strategies panel, where he discussed the future trends with fellow Chartered Financial Analysts David Kelly and Darren Wolf.
The second day covered a wide range of topics ranging from the evolution of digital asset markets and financial technology to wealth management strategies. CMT managing director Tyler K. Wood moderated the Macro Outlook and Investment Strategies for 2023 and Beyond panel. The panel addressed financial trends across history, from the 1896 bicycle boom in Britain to the 21st-century crypto bubble. Panelists Jurrien Timmer and James Bianco also discussed the possibility of an imminent recession but agreed metrics could accurately predict it.
Additionally, Hamdan gave a talk outlining the challenges and opportunities in the investment banking field. Several panels also discussed the role of women in the financial industry. For instance, Del Vecchio served as a panelist on the Women in Finance: Opportunities and Challenges panel, where she was joined by female financial leaders to reflect on their professional experience. Specific sessions offered guidance to students on their post-college career in finance. Delphian Trading's chief strategist moderated a panel discussing the use of trading systems in teaching.
The second day also included the portfolio competition poster sessions. One of the main attractions of the GAME Forum is its Global Portfolio Competition. The competition allows student teams to practice their skills by presenting real investment portfolios. The competition consists of six categories based on study level. The undergraduate categories cover different types of portfolios such as growth, value, and fixed income. The presented portfolio is evaluated based on risk-adjusted returns. Winners received cash awards ranging from $500 to $1,000. In 2023, the University of Arkansas won first place across three undergraduate categories: core portfolio, growth portfolio, and small fund portfolio. In the graduate category, Washington University in St. Louis took home the first prize, while Niagara University and Kent State University won the second and third prizes, respectively.

(SPOILERS if you havent seen it obviously)
Tumblr media
About 3ish minutes into the episode we see Clark be affected by red sun radiation, one of the non-Kryptonite weakness Superman has.
Tumblr media
In the comics we first learn about this weakness in Action Comics #300 (1963), cover art by Curt Swan, George Klein, and Joe Letterese, where Superman is transported to the future by the Superman Revenge Squad, where the sun turned red thus losing his powers and has to find a way back home.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
At the place where Jimmy was captured, we meet Monsieur Mallah and the Brain, at least MAwS version of these characters. I talk more about them in here. The episode has them depicted more like an old married couple with no supervillainous intentions compared to their comic counterparts...
Tumblr media
who often associate themselves as enemies to the Doom Patrol and affliated with the Brotherhood of Evil. Also the Brain is usually French in the comics, here in MAwS, the Brain is German. The cover is from Outsiders #37 (2006) cover art by Daniel Acuna.
Tumblr media
Back outside we see where Monsieur Mallah and the Brain took Jimmy, Cadmus Minefield.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Cadmus/Project Cadmus/the DNA Project, is known for its genetic engineering projects. The organization makes its first appearance in Superman's Pal Jimmy Olsen #135 (1971) created by legendary comic book creator, Jack Kirby. Cadmus is pretty well known for cloning Superboy/Kon-el/Conner Kent. Like in MAwS Cadmus is a government sanctioned division that's located outside of Metropolis. Ironic since in MAwS the government disavows Cadmus. You can read more about it on these two pages from Who's Who in the DC Universe #12 (1991), the art is done by Dan Jurgens, Dennis Janke, and Anthony Tollins.
Tumblr media
Later in the forest we see Lois and Clark have to deal with the OMACs.
Tumblr media
In the comics, Jack Kirby created OMAC, at the time, the acronym stood for One Man Army Corp. Buddy Blank of Earth-AD (a future post-apocalyptic Earth) was selected to be part of the OMAC program where with the help of the Brother Eye satellite grants him powers of super strength, stamina and density control. The cover art here for OMAC #1 (1971) was done by Jack Kirby, Mike Royer, and Gaspar Saladino.
Tumblr media
Years later OMAC gets reinvented to be a cyborgs of Brother Eye that was developed by Batman thanks to his paranoia about super powered heroes turning evil. The page here is from the OMAC Project #5 (W: Greg Rucka, P&I :Jesus Saiz, C: Hi-Fi, L: Phil Balsman). This iteration of OMAC uses the acronym for Omni-Mind and Community. These Cyborgs make their first appearance in the OMAC Project #1 (2005). MAwS's OMACs are a lot more robotic and Evangelion-esque designed compared to how they look in the comics. Note the mohawk/fin designs on OMACs heads in both iterations of the comics and how the robots are designed in MAwS.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Someone on the MAwS team is a fan of Gurren Lagann.
Tumblr media
Monsieur Mallah name drops Task Force X. I talked about the organization here
Tumblr media
Monsieur Mallah mentions one dimensions in the universe where he and the Brain can be accepted. This brings to mind...
Tumblr media
DC's multiverse. The multiverse makes its first appearance in the Flash #123 (1961) where Barry Allen and Jay Garrick meet for the first time. DC's multiple Earths have changed over the years from having only 52 distinct Earths to now infinite. The Multiverse map created by Grant Morrison and Rian Hughes, here is from Multiversity comic series.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Someone on the MAwS crew is a fan of the ED-209 design in Robocop.
Tumblr media
After the fight with the OMACs, the Brain talks about the General. The only person in DC comics who usually goes by that moniker is...
Tumblr media
General Wade Eiling. The panels here are from Captain Atom #1 (1987) (W: Cary Bates, P: Pat Broderick, I: Bob Smith, C: Carl Gafford, L: John Costanza). General Eiling is often associated with Suicide Squad/Task Force X. So it's possible that much like Parasite and Ivo, the MAwS team are combining characters by having...
Tumblr media
him be a combination of General Eiling and General Sam Lane, Lois's dad. But who knows. Gotta wait for confirmation if this is either Eiling or Lane.
