i'm literally so desensitized now, i'm sitting here like ehhh i mean it's all pretty normal isn't it

having just finished it, i've got to go with the yue qingyuan/shen jiu dynamic in scum villain-- the idea that this guy will go the rest of his life not knowing that the person he loves the most and has spent his whole life trying to protect is actually long dead, despite apparently being alive and walking around. and from the shen jiu perspective, to have died and have nobody even know that it happened (and, as others have pointed out, to have everyone prefer the new, fake you)

something about wei wuxian and wen qing’s relationship is so profoundly heartening and i think it’s because, in that first life, they were each other’s confidants in the sense that they voluntarily allowed the other person to see them at their most vulnerable and trust the other to take care of them. wei wuxian trusted wen qing to carry out the golden core transfer and trusted her when he was helpless on that bed, his core cut out from him. and wen qing could think of no one else but wei wuxian to help her when she was in her most dire circumstances, trusting him to help her and her family out when no one else would.

“all that pride–all gone.”

at her lowest, wen qing went to wei wuxian and allowed him to see her that way. partly because her family was so much more important than a game of saving face and partly because if there was someone who would see her in such a state and not think ill of her and continue to respect her, it was wei wuxian. because he’s also been at his worst, circumstantially, and it was exactly in those days that their initial bond/friendship was forged.

there is alot of talk about debts when wwx and the wens are concerned but i think the way they helped each other transcends the obligation of debts. of course, you simply cannot overlook who was owed what, given the setting but it’s interesting that we have this passage to make us reflect on the true nature of wei wuxian and wen qing helping each other:

when wei wuxian had bid her farewell, carrying jiang cheng on his back, wen qing had told him this: “no matter how this war ends, we do not owe each other anything from now on. our debts are cleared.” her haughtiness was clear as day in his memory. but last night, she had clutched his hand in a death grip and almost dropped to her knees as she pleaded.

“wei wuxian…wei wuxian…wei-gongzi. please help me. i have no one else to turn to. you have to help me save a-ning! i really have no one else, i can only come to you!”

it’s the way that following wen qing’s refuge of wei wuxian and jiang cheng, there was a sentiment of: oh the wens did this to you and now we, also wens, have helped you just to compensate a little. let’s settle these debts and leave them behind. and this is despite wen qing clearly stating that the wen clan’s actions do NOT reflect her own and that she’s only ever saved lives, not taken any. and yet she declares “our” debts as cleared as if she had taken some accountability anyway. it’s part that and part her attempt to obscure what her actions towards wwx and jc truly were: an unconditional show of support and help. and wei wuxian knows this and it is only reasonable and honorable to still see the help as a debt owed later down the line.

and the same thing repeats itself when wen qing comes to wei wuxian and explicitly asks for help. there is a sense that this isn’t about some give-and-take or reciprocation of prior debts. it is simply a person reaching out to someone in their most desparate times, hoping their hand will be held. and wei wuxian does hold her hand and they remain each other’s staunch supporters through the rescue and the hellish survival in the burial mounds that follows.

wei wuxian trusts wen qing with his wounds and wen qing opens up her most loved ones to wei wuxian’s care. for two people who spent their lives looking after their loved ones, shouldering massive burdens and going through the destruction of their respective clans, their intrinsic understanding of each other makes their bond so special, so grounded. they both took massive risks to help each other out and they both did what was right over what was easy to extend that help to each other.

despite my fair share of problems with the cql, i appreciated that scene with wq and jc where wen qing made it clear that she couldn’t pursue anything with jiang cheng because he wouldn’t stand by her. he simply didn’t have the guts. and this is reflected in the novel canon, in the sense, that if debts owed are the metric to measure who could have helped wen qing, jiang cheng was also on the list and he was obligated to aid her as much as, if not more than wei wuxian (and i say this because the whole reason wwx ended up staying under wen qing’s extended care was because jc was injured. he would’ve left as soon as he was discovered had he been alone). and yet wen qing doesn’t ever approach jiang cheng. her only option is wei wuxian because she knows, deep down, that he would truly help her and go to greater lengths for her than any debts would warrant. that he would understand.

and thing is, despite being the outliers of their clans, they both (+wen ning) embodied their mottos. “attempt the impossible”/“knowingly do what you know you cannot do” for the jiangs and “every kindness should be returned” for the wens (very hilarious ik) and that is just one amongst the hundreds of commonalities they shared.

and all of this doesn’t even account for the fact that they basically died for each other. if this isn’t platonic love at its best, most brutal, most beautiful, then what is?

Wait follow-up question, why is wwx a-xian while jc is a-cheng? Is this abt decorum or the boys' preferences

Jiang Cheng is Jiang Yanli's blood brother and recognized as such, so no need for her to call him Wanyin much less their family name to each other. Hence A-Cheng. It would be even weirder if she tried to call her own brother by anything else especially because she was known to love him as well. She has no decorum to worry about regarding own brother as family can easily use each other's birth names.

Where it becomes more socially intricate with Wei Wuxian: Despite Jiang Yanli vocally calling him "didi" lit. little brother and not "shidi", their society does not take this claim as seriously (or believe it for that matter) as she does. In their eyes she is an unmarried woman and he is an unmarried man. He was as also never adopted into the Jiang clan despite being a disciple of the clan, he has the family name of Wei and the station of a servant. It would unfortunately look very presumptuous and bold for her to call him a-Ying. It would give fodder for the rumor mill that they were romantically involved, as lovers would use birth names to denote being intimately close. For her using a-xian is to denote that they are as close as siblings, while respecting his turn of age and right to his generational name as a man of age amongst his peers that do and have targeted him in other innocuous ways for being the son of a servant. It's why her demand that Jin Zixun apologize to Wei Wuxian of the Yunmeng claim is so resounding. Jiang Yanli was saying Wei Wuxian was a part of her family, as well as his own individuality as Wei Wuxian had been insulted and called lesser. Patriarchal ties are almost sacred, while she calls him her brother she is not demanding he forsake his filial piety to his ancestral name.

Now, on a similar note, here is where it can be implicitly insulting when it comes to courtesy names with Jin Guangyao's and position: He does not share the same generational character as his familial peers of Zi (子). He is left with a prior generation's name denomination. He is outright being denied any immediate claims of succession as a clan heir and is insulted as being a servant and door greeter for them. He may have been named a Jin in name finally by Jin Guangshan, but there is nothing substantial to that claim as he is not being considered as a succeeding heir unless, literally, all his social betters are killed. Which he makes sure happens. He even does this with Mo Xuanyu, who was brought to Jinlintai after Jin Zixuan was killed. He was defamed and driven out conveniently as Jin Guangshan was killed and never was given a courtesy name or named a part of the Jin Clan formally. Jin Guangshan was readying to claim another heir from his illegitimate children. Jin Guangyao was still not recognized as his child by him, probably out of horrendous and cruel pettiness for Jin Guangyao's interruption at a Jin social event. And Jin Guangyao sure did have resentment about his station of being only a servant, and ridiculed for it, built up for decades.

Eventually, the sun sets and the adrenaline wears off and they all go to their separate rooms.

Jiang Cheng lies in his bed, staring at the ceiling, and feels more tired than he has in a long time. He's exhausted, body and soul, down to the deepest parts of himself. He craves the sweet oblivion of sleep like he's craved little else in his lifetime.

He can't bring himself to close his eyes.

It's real, he knows it, his siblings and nephews in his home and sleeping safe and sound. He hasn't gone crazy, everyone saw them, his disciples and the Lan and the Jin. It's true and real, the only thing he's wanted for the past thirteen years is in his grasp and under his roof.

It feels like a dream. If he falls asleep, maybe he'll wake up to it all gone again. He might go crazy then. He barely survived losing them the first time. He can't do it again.

There's a knock against his door in a familiar pattern that he hasn't heard since before the war.

His throat is too tight to say anything, but like always he doesn't bother to wait for permission. Wei Wuxian slides the door open and then closed, tiptoeing inside and hovering over Jiang Cheng's bed. "Are you sleeping?"

"I'm not now," he says, injecting as much irritation in his tone as he can muster, as if he wasn't lying awake anyway. "What's wrong?"

He shrugs, scuffing his foot against the floor. He's not wearing boots, just in socks and his underrobe he wears for sleeping. "I haven't had my own room in a while. I can't sleep. I didn't want to disturb the kids, and I really didn't want to disturb Shijie."

They make identical disgusted faces at that and Jiang Cheng feels something break and reset inside him, like a bone that healed wrong and is just now back in its proper place. It hurts, but it's better. "So you came to disturb me instead?"

"Yeah," Wei Wuxian says, unrepentant, then drops down to shove him to the other side of the bed. "Come on, share with me."

"Knock it off!" he snaps even as he obligingly moves to the side. "You're being ridiculous. You're not a kid."

"You're being ridiculous," he snaps back, wiggling beneath his blankets and elbowing him in the ribs. Jiang Cheng is going to smother him with his pillow. "Go back to sleep. You won't even notice I'm here."

"Yeah, right," he retorts, but turns over, putting his back to him.

With the warmth of Wei Wuxian against him and his soft whistle breathing, Jiang Cheng slips into sleep without even noticing.

He has a different face, the same smile, a less conspicuous laugh, the same worn t-shirts of obscure bands Lan Wangji doesn't try to listen to at full volume because he cares too much about his hearing. He is not the version of him Wangji obsessed over in the past six years of insomnia, the Yiling Patriarch with a mind poisoned by dark magic, but he's not the boy he fell in love with, either. Having him back would would be an impossible type of joy, endless and complete, if Wei Wuxian was not avoiding him.

Underrated element of where Jiang Cheng is re: wwx after everything is that they always had a sort of dual relationship. Two different relationship premises, superimposed on one another.

There's the one where they grew up together, as close as brothers, beating each other up and complaining and being one another's closest companions, sharing a bedroom as kids and eating at the same family dinner table, actively encouraged by Jiang Fengmian to interact as equals.

And then there's the one where Wei Wuxian was in service to Jiang Cheng's family. Not as a servant--Jiang Fengmian absolutely refused to do that, even if he couldn't adopt him. But as a disciple of Jiang Cheng's father and recipient of his charity, as Jiang Cheng's future right hand and most trusted subordinate.

It's a vertical relationship, intimate in its own way but with very strict expectations about what obligations flow in what directions; they are not identical and reciprocal as between friends and equals.

(It's my opinion that Jiang Fengmian's core deal was a deep-seated discontent with the hierarchies he was at the top of, without access to any way to actually deconstruct them or even coherently articulate his opposition. Wei Changze was his dear friend, and no one thinks that's a good enough reason for him to treat Wei Changze's son like his own, because Wei Changze was also his servant, and you can't make that circle square. That's not a way you're allowed to love.)

Jiang Cheng and Wei Wuxian were like brothers; Wei Wuxian served Jiang Cheng.

The personal relationship was always the most important one. To them, in their hearts. But it was the other one that was real, that had weight in the world.

And it's important to understand that neither can be held up as more factual than the other, even though they conflict. Both relationships existed, and had power.

So then when Jiang Cheng chose to hate Wei Wuxian and articulate his grudge against him, he chose to do it in the language of fealty. Because as far as he knew, his case there was secure, watertight, and it wouldn't expose him emotionally or politically.

And those are the terms in which he's been condemning him all this time: for abandoning the Sect, for ingratitude, for lack of loyalty.

For fuckups, too, and poor judgment, but some of that now turns out to have been justified and some of it was mostly the fault of enemies behaving badly, or even Jiang Cheng himself allowing himself to be pushed into making unworthy choices.

And it was all for his sake.

The thing, the thing in my opinion, about what Wei Wuxian did, about the core transfer and his silent self-destruction around keeping it secret, is that that is a hideous thing to have done between two people who love each other, as an act of love. Beautiful, but awful. As the man who was like a brother to him, Jiang Cheng has a great deal of standing to object to it.

But as an act of vassalage, it's basically perfect.

If Wei Wuxian were only what he formally was to Jiang Cheng, if he is interpreted through a lens of fealty and obligation, he did exactly what he should have done, and went beyond what duty actually required. And went to his death silently, allowing himself to be judged, taking all the burden on himself rather than let harm come to his lord.

Like, obviously Jiang Cheng was harmed by the part where Jin Zixuan got manslaughtered and Jiang Yanli walked into the line of fire in situations where Wei Wuxian was resorting to violence and probably shouldn't have, but those are one step removed from the core issue. In terms of Wei Wuxian's intentional choices around Jiang Cheng himself, at the times he was feeling betrayed and abandoned Wei Wuxian was in fact being impossibly, poetically loyal, an absolute cliche about it.

But only in terms of the hierarchical form of their relationship.

Which means that even though Jiang Cheng has a lot of reasons to still be mad at Wei Wuxian, his actual complaints that he's centered for thirteen years are basically wiped out by the revelation of Wei Wuxian's sacrifice.

Wei Wuxian was in fact doing the tragic hero loyal vassal thing, which very much includes being misunderstood and slandered by the world. (Chenqing as a name choice absolutely references this expectation, and the idea that Jiang Cheng specifically will never understand that Wei Wuxian was trying to help him first and foremost all along; he is not subtle.)

The debts Jiang Cheng has been spitefully calling in and considering defaulted were already long paid.

So if at this point Jiang Cheng keeps pursuing that same line of rhetorical attack, now that he knows, he'll be putting himself morally in the wrong, and he knows it. But if he pivots to something else, he'll both be signalling the shape of that secret to the entire world and looking like a prize idiot.

Which is already how he feels.

To actually address the remaining grievances between them, which are considerable, would require releasing those safe, open grudges to Wei Wuxian's face and then reclaiming him as a loved one. Which is, one could fairly say, more than anyone could expect.

Which is why Wei Wuxian told him he didn't have to.

Which leaves Jiang Cheng at something of an impasse.

Honestly I'd really like to see a mxtx3 story where wwx and xl work with Sqq to reveal sqq's true backstory and the system to lbh.

I mean, think about it!! One of the biggest problems with scum villain is how even though they get together, unlike the other couples bingqiu is still left with all these huge secrets that massively affect them both. Lbh is left believing he married his mercurial abuser, that his suffering passed some sort of indefinable test that proved him worthy of basic rights. That Sqq threw him in the abyss of his own volition. That Sqq was really sacrificing his life and not faking his death with intent to survive.

Sqq is left knowing all these things but unable to act on them, unable to tell his husband about his own past, unable to explain his actions, never able to fully let his guard down because he's supposed to be shen qingqiu. He can't even tell his own husband his original name!! If he could have, he would have, even if only in the extras!

But can you imagine???

A meeting of bingqiu, wangxian, Hualian, for whatever reason, and as the three (actual) protagonists chat and gossip and get to know each other, as they talk, Sqq is at ease enough to slip up and finds out he can talk about the system to anyone from outside pidw! Not just sqh!! Maybe not completely, but he can mention some, and the other two, concerned for their new friend, are clever enough to tease the rest out. They're horrified. Sqq is resigned but freshly hopeful.

And so begins Mission: Save Sqq's Marriage!

(Sqq would very much like to contend the title but he is out voted.)

I'd just love to see the three of them (with unquestioning aid from their husbands) get up to hijinks and face existential horrors on a quest to help bingqiu get the closure they need. And moshang too, I guess XD.

It'd also be very, very funny to have them all in the middle of the latest traumatic and/or mortifying scene look around at the other two like 'hey, aren't you supposed to be freaking out now? This is normally the part people start screaming' and the other two are like 'I mean I guess?? We've got things to do though' like kings of unflappable repression right there.

(and lbh and lwj having vinegar-offs while hc is sighing dreamily watching his husband make semi decent friends for once)

Like there's a bunch of crossovers but none really scratch that itch, you know? The main characters of all 3 mxtx?? There's so much potential for Truly Unhinged Shenanigans!! Wangxian visiting pidws wife plot filled world and disappearing into the wilderness for a full week, coming back with every single piece of clothing they brought ruined. Hualian go visit mdzs and and no one believes xl is a diety and hc chomping at the bit to kill them for the injustice. Bingqiu going to tgcf and lbh getting mistaken for a calamity, or Sqq falling into the one wife plot kidnapping or something intended for a diety.

But seriously imagine Sqq complaining about something and wwx and xl immediately going 'that's not right! You deserve better!!' and Sqq is like 'no it's fine I'm used to it' and the other two slam their fists on the table like 'no!!! If [husband] was forced to keep that kind of secret I'd hate it!! You two deserve to be properly happy!! Let us help! We can fix this!' and start working with zeal and vigor while Sqq trails along embarrassed half heartedly muttering 'it's not that bad >:/'.

And when it works (presumably some clever loophole they stumbled on) and bingqiu are tearfully kissing they share a low five without looking. Or that one meme where the person getting kissed holds their hand back and their wingman enthusiastically high fives it but there's two wingmen XD!

I don't knowww but it'd be such a good premise! Ripe for character interactions!! Fluff! Crack! Angst! Daytrips and pouring their hearts out to people who'd really understand! Xl wwx and Sqq bestie team up! Meeting moshang! Wwx info dumping about his monster index categorisation to an enthralled Sqq! Xl and Sqq bemoaning etiquette while wwx laughs at them! Xl and wwx having intense discussions about morality and righteousness! All three of them laughing at how oblivious they were about their husbands, each trying to one the other two for Dumb Moments They Should Have Realised (Sqq wins by horrifying the other two)!

Forget cross country kidnappings and being locked in a room! Where is my protagonist trio getting into trouble on a self imposed mission to help their friend! Let their magnetism for insanity shine!!

Mdzs characters I think would smoke and what their smoking habits would look like:

Wei Wuxian- He’d probably be vaping the weirdest, experimental flavours like “Matcha and Wasabi”, “Spicy Mango Pepper”, or “Sour Plum wine”. He’d be the guy at party making not-so-fruity smoke clouds.

Jiang Cheng- He picked up the habit of smoking during university while trying to prove to his parents he can do it and now he’s just used to it. His preference is something classic, unfiltered cigarettes. He absolutely hates vaping (wwx ruined it for him)

Nie Huaisang- His Pick is the hookah. He’d make a whole ritual out of it, setting up elaborate, colorful hookahs with long, winding hoses, filling the air with sweet, fragrant smoke. He would gather people around, telling stories, sharing gossip, and making an event of it. He’d likely have a variety of flavors on hand, from “Exotic Pomegranate Mint” to “Jasmine White Tea”.

Lan Xichen- Surprisingly, he’d use w eed. If anyone asked, he’d say it’s for “meditative purposes” or to help him “relax and reflect.” Xichen favours edibles or teas over smoking directly, preferring something like lavender or chamomile-infused cannabis tea, treating it as a rare, sacred ritual. On the off chance he does smoke, he’s thoughtful, giving each exhale a contemplative pause, as if he’s meditating on the meaning of life with each puff.

BONUS

Jin Ling- He would steal one of jc’s cigarettes because he wants to look cool like his jiujiu. He’d take a puff and instantly choke immediately regretting his decision because of the foul taste. But he’d realise he inhaled the smoke into his lungs and begins to panic, “what if I get cancer now?”

Jiang Cheng finds him crying and a discarded cigarette on the floor and jl is like “omg jiujiu I’m gonna die now.” Snotty faced and all. Wwx is in the background trying so hard not to laugh while jc scolds jl.

wwx became a calamity after dying and cared for his coven of ghosts in yiling before mxy summoned him for revenge.

he still elopes with lwj after solving the corpse question

supreme ghosts have a similar ability to gods taking deputies, except since they're not sharing immortality they can have a lot more of them

wwx's "deputies" are (in order) jiang cheng, the wen remnants, luo qingyang, nie huaisang, mo xuanyu, jin ling, lan jingyi, ouyang zhizhen, lan sizhui, and lan wangji.

being a calamity's "deputy" means that you are soul bonded to them, with a kind of preternatural sense of the wellbeing of the entire coven.

one of the heavenly officials decides to fuck around with time, and only other heavenly officials were supposed to remember, except extremely strong ghosts and their covens also remember because there are TWO gods married to calamities, and calamities are weirdly cooperative with each other (hc, hx, wwx, & gL discuss trade agreements over tea and artistic process over alcohol).

thus like 75 people are now in the past.

wwx's child body cant stand the power his soul has and just kinda crumbles under the weight. thats mostly fine tho cause he can shapeshift.

of course he immediately comes up with a dastardly plan to inflict as much chaos onto the sects as possible while also protecting his loved ones at the same time. he gets in contact with the wen remnants (bigger and there's more of them) and slowly moves them over to yiling while he builds places for them to live on the mountain, and then offers the people of yiling a very good deal:

"we'll deal with all your ghost problems for free, and in exchange we get discounts on food, and you tell everyone who comes asking that the Yiling Wei sect has been here the entire time."

its almost too easy to set up, too. they forge some trade agreements and other documents to place in the other sects' files, waiting to be found, with ease, bc he knows what the filing for the jiang, lan, wen, and nie looks like, and part of the story is that the jin offended them so badly that they just stopped doing business with them altogether and also tend to actively hate them with few exceptions.

meanwhile, huaisang, qingyang, and wangji will reference the Yiling Wei and act like this is something everyone knows about, and jiang cheng catches on and starts doing the same.

wwx's plan is to drive them all insane by appearing out of nowhere and acting like he's been there the entire time. make them question reality.

jiang fengmian, initiating polite conversation: your grandson? what happened to your son?

wen popo, internally cackling: fengmian! are you so quick to discard changze like this?! for shame!!

jiang fengmian, who has never met this lady: what

wen popo: you know i trusted him when he said he wanted to stand by his sworn brother's side but if this is how you treat his memory after he was so unwaveringly loyal to you, only ever leaving for Cangse, the love of his life, then i'll have to have you stricken from the legacy registry!

wen ruohan, who has incurable face blindness: well met Wei-zhongzhu (do i know her???)

nie mingjue is the only one who's taking any of this well and thats solely because his brother has been spoon feeding him Yiling Wei propaganda for 13 years. lan xichen has a crisis because his baby brother eloped with a clan leader he met thrice and they're having a spring wedding.

Au were WWX makes a deal w/ a demon to posses his body and in return will get revenge on the Wen and protect the people wwx loves instead of creating demonic cultivation when he’s tossed in then Burial Mounds. So WWX is stuck in his body while this demon is in control, pretending to be him. He, of course, gets bored of just being there unable to really do anything so he starts talking to the demon who can hear him since he’s in his head. He becomes like a backseat driver to the demon and makes comments on the demons actions as “Wei Wuxian.” Eventually he drives the demon so mad with his inane chatter and Wei Wuxian-ness that the demon stops possessing him to just get away from WWX and his endless talking.

But, in the meantime, WWX was watching closely and learning how the demon was doing demonic cultivation and stuff and so knows how to use it and was developing a lot of arrays and talismans and stuff that he couldn’t write down/didn’t want the demon knowing about. Also, he’ll sometimes tell the demon to do something and the demon will do it to just get him to shut up about it. The demon also helps WWX realize he’s in love with lwj after WWX blabbers on about him for days on end and not seeming like he’s gonna stop any time soon, making the demon’s eye twitch. He gets so fed up with WWX’s unknowing pining that he helps him through his bi-realization so he can finally have some peace in their head.

Of course this just leads to WWX gushing about lwj even more bc now he knows why he can’t stop thinking about the other and everything reminds him of him.

The demon is seriously regretting it’s life choices.

It won’t for long though bc WWX has decided this demon is family now and will be aggressive adopting it once he gets control of his body back. You don’t just spend years sharing a body and mind with someone and not make them part of your found family after all.

The sound of low, raspy humming of a familiar tune took his attention away, lifting his head to gaze into the nearby forest of Yiling. “Wei Ying?”

Following his siren song, Lan Wangji shook as he brought himself to his feet. He grimaced in pain, taking a few shallow breaths but never able to breathe too deeply. The ache in his back forced him to stop routinely, but he couldn’t give up now… The melody was so close.

He pushed forward, stumbling into dense foliage and pushing it aside painfully. “Wei Ying…?” His body froze, pupils shrinking in shock.

Sitting upright against a tree in the distance was a corpse holding a young child, and not just any corpse and child. It was Wei Wuxian with Wen Yuan. Calmly drifting around the corpse was a thick resentment, moving like a living thing protecting its young. The moment the two were stumbled upon though, the humming came to an abrupt halt and the resentment curled around the two protectively.

Despite Wei Wuxian not turning his head nearly as quickly as he usually would to figure out who had stumbled upon them, the resentment reared itself almost like a feral animal in defense, giving the two a wide berth from the Lan.

“...Wei Ying…A-Yuan?” Lan Wangji managed, his heart falling to his feet.

He was too late.

“The Dead Keep Walking” / TDKW - General rating* *maybe Teen if gross things are described, tbh more likely to be teen but not sure.

TDKW is a short project I have planned centered around LWJ finding the dead body of WWX and A-Yuan is with him- but WWX is undead and walking. WWX may be a corpse, but he is conscious- a bit more like TGCF in that sense for plot reasons, but I may provide a sort of "as canon as possible" answer to fit more into mdzs properly. maybe something like a tag he attached to his skin or something before death combined with resentment from his living body.

WWX is not completely right in the head; he repeats things a lot, has lost the ability partially to actually debate with people (he will just repeat himself when he knows he's correct or wants something) has an uncharacteristically flat expression because of his state and his movements aren't always too fluid. he is however still good at protecting, as his resentment still resides with him in death. he has become more unapologetically feral as a result.

There's not a lot of information I can share yet for this fic, but I wanted to share it since I have been thinking about it for quite some time!

Hiii sorry to bother u! I just wanted to say i love your mxtx art + tgcf comments. I LOVE your Wei Wuxian especially!! His eyes!!!! You are right they make him look like a bit of a red flag to strangers but that makes them PERFECT for him!! And they also make him look so smug when he smiles...again, those eyes are 100% Wei Wuxian. Do you have any other WWX sketch to share?

(Also kinda unrelated, kinda on topic, but what did Lan Wangji think of the eerie eyes when he first met him? I started thinking of this last minute while writing my compliments, but feel free not to answer!)

Aaaaah thank you so much for your kind words! I'm happy you like my WWX! <3 Well, I had to dig in a bit, but here are some of the WWX sketches I've done while reading MDZS (back in spring 2023)!

To explain some of them, I spent a lot of time trying to figure out a good way to differenciate WWX and MXY, so there's a lot of MXY there too. For the third image, I wasn't sure of Wangxian's height difference back then so I just went with whatever, now I've adjusted it to fit the canon. For the fourth image, one my headcanons was that LSZ had inherited WWX's creepy smile™. So when they're both smiling, it's flagrant he's his son. Fifth image is WWX in the burial mounds, and the sixth was for a modern AU in which MXY is WWX's younger twin brother.

Now! To answer your question "What did LWJ think of his eerie eyes the first time he met him?". Well, my personal thoughts on this was that they weren't too creepy at first, he was still a relatively joyous teen and I imagine he was really expressive too. Maybe it made him look arrogant or something, but that was just a detail, even LWJ could tell he wasn't like that. Maybe others would notice, and mention it to LWJ, but he would just reply something along the lines of "useless". (Translation "That's not what's important, what's important is that he's! breaking! the! rules!"). Maybe there was some jealousy, "no one can read my emotions and this boy has expressive eyes that's not fair I wish I could be as expressive as him". But it was lost to time, pain and love, as WWX lost some of his joy and innocence, as war made him more languid, scared and distant. Yet those eyes at the end of his life still seemed like they were smiling, not matter how many tears ran down his cheeks. And maybe then LWJ thought "Is it really worth it to have eyes like this if it forces you to look alright when really you're in pain?".

Now, in MXY's body, some of his features mixed with MXY's, his eyes feel less locked in a constant smile. And LWJ loves to look at them, no matter if he's smiling or pouting.
