“No one likes a madwoman,” perfectly describes the way my life as a neurodivergent queer woman feels. We’re often too loud, too annoying, too clingy. No matter what we do, people are always going to judge and decide our story in what point of view is cleaner and easier for them.

We’re often taught that to be a good person, someone who isn’t a disappointment, someone who doesn’t cause problems. But because we need to be taught, anytime we act out against the norm, even when it’s not intentional, we’re villainised over it.

We blame ourselves; we hate ourselves; we feel a need to change ourselves because if society views us as wrong; we think maybe we are? So we punish ourselves for things out of our control and try to conform, and when that doesn’t work, we grow tired and weary.

So what if we like women? So what if we don’t want a traditional family? So what if all we want is to be happy and comfortable in ourselves without the pressures to please everyone around us? It’s too much, and it’s not fair. Then people start to hate us and assume the worst.

No matter what we do, people want to hide our voices, make us disappear. It’s due to this that I think it’s important we speak out, keep being ourselves no matter what others think. The simple desire to live as ourselves in this ugly world, that’s all we want.
