Hello!

Got any headcanons about Bruce and Khoa's training years that hasn't been shown in the sacred texts (a.k.a. comics when they're good)?

Feel free to ramble, I look forward to reading everything you write <3

You’re gonna make me blush, seriously. Accept this humble offering 😳🌹:

They used to exchange clothes a lot (half homoeroticism, half they just didn't care that much), so usually, when they were on good terms and traveling together, none of them bothered to pay attention to whose clothes belonged to whom, they just took whatever they liked, bitched about any piece that wasn’t to their tastes and made sure everything was packed when they left.

That made their separations a lot more embarrassing ‘cause they could either just take the first bag they saw and leave dramatically (running the risk of ending up with no underwear and no pants ‘cause they were all in the other bag) or have to stop to rearrange and separate the clothes, and THEN leave dramatically.

Can’t decide which one of them would get angry enough to just leave all the clothes, take only the equipment (the only thing they maintained separately) and go away. Probably both. And probably at the same time, leaving the clothes to be taken by their landlord/last mentor

I think they were constantly working on some project to improve the technology and equipment they had. Most often than not they would be making a competition out of it, but when they wanted to, they could work really well together, and since they didn’t have anyone else, they were the only ones they could go to when they needed help or a second opinion on something

I like to think bruce helped khoa to develop the fabric he uses on his mask to see through it even when it covers both his eyes, just bc of the angst of khoa carrying this proof of what they could accomplish together everywhere he goes

They probably stopped at all those technology fairs and stumbled upon each other accidentally more than once even when they were actively avoiding each other just because they couldn’t help being such huge nerds

Once they were in Australia and encountered one of these fellas:

and this is how khoa knows bruce is afraid of bats. <- also probably one of his fondest memories, ‘cause bruce was having the worst time of his life and he was laughing his ass off

The first time they went out to test their abilities fighting crime, khoa was already using his signature mask, but bruce (who refused the spare one khoa so magnanimously offered him) just made them stop at a random store and bought a zorro halloween mask ‘cause a) he couldn’t be bothered, b) he has a morbid sense of humor and c) he knew khoa would get pissed (on top of making fun of his name, I bet bruce also made fun of him insisting on covering his eyes with the mask for no good reason other than to look cooler).

Even when they were feeling an achillean rage towards each other, standing side by side or back to back in a room full of other people brought a sense of calmness and security to both of them, ‘cause they knew that if anything went bad in whatever situation they were in, they would be dealing with it together <3

Noah is a 25 years old human, they are 183 cm tall, go by he/ they and is currently thinking about themselves as achillean, but he is pretty unsure.

Noah is very much chaotic and a bit of a loose canon. They have an affinity for fire and burning things, which has rendered him a nuisance for many shelters, only shelter 1647 recognised their usefulness when it comes to dealing with beasts and attackers through their guns. He prides himself in their skills a lot because they feel empowered and accepted in the shelter they now call home. Beside their gunning skills, Noah is a big jokester and loves to alleviate grim situations with his humor and jest. He is also very much someone you can trust with your secrets, they will take it with them to their grave. He has a very strained relationship with Horatio, they are somewhat feuding.

Noah grew up in a town right next to the Rhine Falls in Switzerland. But their village got destroyed by the beasts and his family was killed, so he ran away. As they wandered, they came long many abandoned places and cities. In one of these, Noah found his first gun and was finally able to defend themselves. It took them quite some time until they came near the city dome, and when he arrived there, he met Khuki and Konton, an nephilim and a cambion. The two of them brought him to the lab, where they lived for some months until they found their home in shelter 1647. Noah quickly became the best weapon against beasts.

Noah is part of the expedition team. He has a very big interest in clocks, watches and pocket watches. They are a child of the internet, plus being one of few members with a working phone.

Summary:

A big-hearted romantic comedy in which the First Son falls in love with the Prince of Wales after an incident of international proportions forces them to pretend to be best friends... First Son Alex Claremont-Diaz is the closest thing to a prince this side of the Atlantic. With his intrepid sister and the Veep’s genius granddaughter, they’re the White House Trio, a beautiful millennial marketing strategy for his mother, President Ellen Claremont. International socialite duties do have downsides—namely, when photos of a confrontation with his longtime nemesis Prince Henry at a royal wedding leak to the tabloids and threaten American/British relations. The plan for damage control: staging a fake friendship between the First Son and the Prince. Alex is busy enough handling his mother’s bloodthirsty opponents and his own political ambitions without an uptight royal slowing him down. But beneath Henry’s Prince Charming veneer, there’s a soft-hearted eccentric with a dry sense of humor and more than one ghost haunting him. As President Claremont kicks off her reelection bid, Alex finds himself hurtling into a secret relationship with Henry that could derail the campaign and upend two nations. And Henry throws everything into question for Alex, an impulsive, charming guy who thought he knew everything: What is worth the sacrifice? How do you do all the good you can do? And, most importantly, how will history remember you?

*Opinions*

You couldn’t breathe without hearing about this novel back when it was released in 2019. It was all the rage and won the best romance and best debut novel in the 2019 Goodreads Choice awards. At the time, I really didn’t have any interest in reading it. I didn’t consider myself a romance reader and nothing about it really pulled me in. However, after hearing all the hype and seeing that there is an adaption coming out soon, I decided to get it out of the library and give it a chance. I was pleasantly surprised.

Red, White, and Royal Blue follows Alex, the first son of the united states, as he navigates his complicated hate-to-friends-to-lovers relationship with the younger Prince of England, Henry. This relationship is complicated by both men’s political standing, the fact that neither of them is out, and that it is the election year for Alex’s mom to secure a second term in the White House. I am not going to talk about Alex’s journey of realizing that he is bisexual or anything else related to his and Henry’s sexuality because as a straight woman, I don’t have anything to add to that conversation. I will say that nothing happened that stood out to me as super offensive, but again, straight woman.

I did see some reviews stating that Alex was annoying and obnoxious, which hindered their enjoyment of the novel. While I agree at times that Alex is annoying and obnoxious, for me these traits made him more well-rounded than unbearable. Alex even admits that he is loud and can’t stop talking and just a lot and I think that is characterized well in the novel. As someone with anxiety, Alex always has to be working to push down his overbearing emotions is very relatable. While I think he swore a little too much, it took me out of the story sometimes, I cared about him and what happened to him and his friends. Henry was a bit harder to connect with, but that’s just because the point of view is close to Alex. He is still a likable character, but I felt as if Alex told me more about Henry than I saw in the narrative. The side characters of Nora and June felt well-rounded, but some of the others felt more like stereotypes of characters than real people. Nothing super egregious, but something I noticed.

The biggest detractor, and what most people point to in their criticisms, is the black-and-white view of politics in the United States. Alex’s mom is a Democratic woman from Texas that not only wins the presidency once, but twice. Her opponent in the 2020 election is an obvious stand-in for Trump and while the amount of horrible things he had been alleged to do makes Richards look like a choir boy, in the story Richards seemed like an over-the-top villain. I can’t get into any more detail without spoilers, but I think a horrible thing too much was added to make him believable. Again, we know enough about some politicians now that perhaps it just feels ridiculous to see it on paper. However, Alex’s mom and his family are depicted as honest and upright and always doing the right thing. It’s a great fantasy, but I cannot believe that any politician makes it so that we know their name without skeletons in their closet. That’s just how politics in the U.S. work. McQuiston stated that this story was part of her detail with the administration in power from 2016-2020, but at some points, the obvious fantasy of the politics pulled me out of the story.

I also had issues with the number of times that the novel touched on very important topics, imperialism being a huge one, and then never really addressed. I wish they weren’t mentioned at all, or really addressed. This light touching on and then pulling away took me out of the story.

The spicy scenes and romance hit the feelings they were supposed to it. There is a good deal of tenderness in this novel along with the desperate make-out sessions and risky blow-jobs. As a romance novel, I don’t have any complaints, but the politics of the novel and some of the lack of secondary characters take a star off my rating. I don’t think I’ll buy this novel for my shelves, but a 4 out of 5 reads.

Biography 

Caelan was born for this whole magic business. His bloodline was almost perfect for it, following a family tradition almost as old as magic itself, but even more important than that, he was simply gifted.

He was passionate about it too — young Caelan would read every tome he could get his hands on, try every spell and every potion available to him, often with great success. To everyone, it appeared Caelan was destined to be the next great leader of their coven. He disagreed.

As much as he loved magic, Caelan didn't much care for the politics associated with it. Holding on to tradition, fighting for power, dealing with wolves and vampires... He simply wasn't invested. He wanted to learn more, do more magic, and let everyone figure out the politics without him.

Caelan was around 20 when his passion became an addiction.

The pressure he felt from his family to follow the path they'd laid out for him had become overwhelming, he had no choice but to turn to the one thing that had kept him sane until them: magic. He used his expertise to create the best combination of herbs and magic to remove all of the anxiety and stress out of his head and replace it with euphoria.

It was a short-term solution, but one Caelan went on to rely on often. With time, Caelan came to be less so the heir apparent to an entire coven and more of a shameful footnote on his family's history.

Now directionless in life and powered by an ego that had never been checked by anyone, Caelan distanced himself from everyone he knew, in favor of sycophants who saw in him the same genius that his family once did, but without any of the expectations — and with his ability to concoct drugs as powerful as his, Caelan never ran short of these people.

Leaving his birthplace came naturally as he distanced himself from his roots, and a city as super natural as Port Leiry felt like a perfect fit for someone so eager to show off everything that he could do. There, while technically being a part of his coven, Caelan grew much closer to different creatures, both enjoying the danger they brought and being entirely too confident on his abilities to keep himself safe.

Years after arriving Caelan still is largely directionless, drinking from bar to bar, entertaining crowds with his art, his magic, and above all, his concoctions. Far from the life many had dreamed for him, but the life of his dreams as far as he's concerned.

January Reading Recap

I had an incredible reading month in January. Not only did I read more books than I planned but I had an unusually high number of 4 and even 5 star reads. I think I even found a few new all-time favorites!

Here's a recap of everything I read in January:

Come Tumbling Down by Seanan McGuire (Wayward Children #5)🌈 I started off the year by continuing one of my favorite series. This one focuses on Jack and Jill who are two of my favorite characters from the series. ⭐⭐⭐⭐

A House with Good Bones by T. Kingfisher A really fun and surprising horror. I loved the humor and the characters in this! ⭐⭐⭐⭐

The Wife Upstairs by Rachel Hawkins A fun retelling of Jane Eyre as a thriller. A quick and twisty read. ⭐⭐⭐

All the Hidden Paths by Foz Meadows (The Tithenai Chronicles #2) 🌈 The sequel to one of my favorite romantasy novels. If you loved the relationship between Vel and Cae in A Strange & Stubborn Endurance, this is a must-read! See my full review here! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Faebound by Saara El-Arifi (Faebound #1) 🌈 The start of a new romantasy series that I had so much fun reading. I love both of the two main romantic relationships (one straight and one sapphic) and I can't wait to see where the next book takes both pairings. See my full review here. ⭐⭐⭐⭐

The Prospects by K.T. Hoffman 🌈 A joyful achillean romance featuring a trans lead character. A rivals to lovers sports romance with a delightful found family. See my full review here! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Silver Under Nightfall by Rin Chupeco 🌈 A gothic vampire fantasy that involves a vampire hunter teaming up with a vampire couple to solve a mystery. It focuses on the romantic relationship that develops between the three main characters while also offering a lot of interesting political dynamics and surprising plot twists. I really love the world this is set in and I loved all three main characters. ⭐⭐⭐⭐

And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie A classic mystery that I'm glad I read. You can definitely see the influence this has had on modern mystery/thriller novels. Looking back on all the thrillers I've ever read, there are several locked-door mysteries that were certainly inspired by this one. It's fast-paced, exciting, and I was surprised by the twists at the end. ⭐⭐⭐

How did I do with my reading goals?

I did well with all my goals except I did not read any Aardvark Book Club or Book of the Month Picks in January. That is a goal I will definitely try harder to accomplish in February! I did however fulfill most of my goals.

I read, at least, a few pages every day in January.

I continued a series (Wayward Children) that I'm in the middle of.

Half of the books I read this month were over 300 pages.

I read one new T. Kingfisher book!

I read one new (modern) classic.

I also finished one book (Silver Under Nightfall) from my 2024 Priority TBR!
