My First Book. My Labour of Love
As the published book (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/H._P._S._Ahluwalia) arrived, I spread the word and the first feedback came in. Then another and another. The book was received very well. It was found to be interesting not only by people with paraplegia, individuals in a wheelchair but others too. Friends and public found it fascinating and inspiring â how to cope with difficult situations in life. My author experience was boosting my morale and motivating me. I started getting views and opinions from readers and that was encouraging and uplifting. Some conveyed that they found the book so interesting that they read it in one sitting! Another from the US reported that he had earlier read another book and it took him weeks to complete reading it but "Coming Back (https://www.zorbabooks.com/store/general-fiction/true-story/coming-back/)" he finished reading it in one go. Others wrote that they found reading this book as if I was sitting with them and narrating the whole story and that made the book reading very interesting. The feedback made me think why didn't I wield my pen earlier? As a senior citizen I find it personally rewarding that my book published by Zorba Books, is slowly enriching people's lives. Not only those who love an inspiring story but also those who are going through the struggles of being handicapped with special relevance to people on wheelchair. Late Major HPS Ahluwalia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/H._P._S._Ahluwalia) of the Indian Spinal Injuries Centre has personally endorsed my book. â VIJAY DIGAMBAR GARDE

very sad still see the saria/silence divorce headcanon still going around
have you ever tried to consider that they never dated before lone trail because it would be unrealistic with the timeline and the events and also because it would be overshadowing the actual truth of why they couldn't get along
#i'll elaborate#firstly it's ok if you headcanon this i don't want to invalidate what people think#it's just that I think it's a fanon joke that have been going around for way too long#and I can't help but shed a small tear when I see people really headcanoning it#I personally think it's way more interesting if we consider that they never had something going on before Lone Trail#mostly because it's weird that they started dating in like some months when they barely knew or saw each other#but also because it adds nothing but just makes things even more harder for them#my personal headcanon is that Silence was maybe having feelings for Saria but like#you know these very premature feelings#like just âoh wow she's pretty and niceâ#but nothing like really deep#but they never had anything going on before the diabolic crisis#and after lone trail after they made up and saw each other's true person#they start to actually get real feelings#I'm just complaining but I've been still seeing it around somehow and it's sad to me that this joke became a fact for many people#there's still a lot of fanfics about how they had been dating and now they're on bad terms#I think that going on the âthey're exesâ route is way too easy and actually hides the potential and interesting reason#of why Silence was mad at Saria#it's not because she hates Saria or blame her#it's because she's mad at herself for being so weak#really making them appear as exes just hides this really interesting truth and makes it all seem to be a sad love story#consider that they never had any of this and that this tension between them is because they blame themselves!!#their story is not a love story but above all a story about self love and acceptance#just my two cents enjoy my rambling i go back to bed now#(not putting this in the main tag I don't want to start a war I'm just rambling)

Before we call anon rude because letâs see it from their perspective, imagine getting an entire feast to eat. That can be pretty hard to start with so much thatâs going on, but if they start with one thing they know theyâll like (aka one character they like) that can be the start for them leaping to other characters to finish the story and the bigger story. I struggle the same way to start book series if I donât have at least one character that drives me to read it, itâs all about what can be the hook to push them through. Sounds like the anon is neurodivergent (just a guess) so they might genuinely not see it as rude and see it as a solution to even play the game to start with.
Btw absolutely adore the game, the complex and rich characters making them all so unique is amazing. The art is so pleasing to the eyes I love it!! Iâm waiting for it all to get out at once so I donât get too impatient. Shae however interests me the most, which routes will have the most lore for them? Will there be routes that give more lore in general based on decisions you make or do they all share the same amount? (I mean general lore not just Shae lore)
Apologies; we are not trying to accuse any asker of being rude! We are simply explaining our perspective as the developers / are trying to broadly encourage folks to dip their toes into other areas of the story outside of the main route(s) they're interested in, especially considering some routes will be made available sooner than others, and these other routes will likely contain additional scenes/lore of everyone's fave(s) regardless! We want to give each main cast member an equal amount of love (and lore) regardless of their overall popularity, so our goal is not to tut-tut anyone for having strong preferences for one character over the others, but rather to explain that you may be surprised by how much *more* you learn about your preferred characters in the other routes. That's all!
For Shae... Well, they were a foot soldier for one of the worst periods of the War. Lore wise, any other story that touches on the War will likely have content relevant to them and their experiences. ^^
#ask#clotho answers#edit/final note: we got a *few* asks on this subject and will not likely answer all of them for the sake of our followers' dashboards#but we also want to note that part of our encouragements here come from the fact that Flan/Keagan are our most popular characters by a lot#and we want to do what we can to gently nudge folks who may not want to romance the fem / nb characters into checking out their stories#despite not being into them romantically. this is half of why we have platonic routes to begin with#we recognize veterans to the dating sim world may feel less inclined to romance characters that don't align with their irl orientations#this isn't a bad thing. some people steer clear of dating sims altogether because they're aro or just not interested in romance stories etc#but the unintentional side effect of this is it has a chilling effect on developers even in the indie sphere to make less diverse stories#if Flan and Keagan are our most popular characters then they will be our most *profitable* characters in the long run#and as much as we would love to not care about money and just produce the story we want to tell#we live in a society (tm) and need to eat#if at the end of ndm's development we see that 90% of our engagement went toward the boys it is hard to ignore the financial incentive#to redirect our energy toward leaning into the 'tried and true' formula that assures we can buy groceries and make rent#basically what i am candidly saying here is capitalism is pretty bad for creative liberty unless you're already rich / able to self finance#which we are not. and currently none of the core devs make *anything* from ndm#it would be nice if it does turn a profit but that isn't a guarantee - which the team has accepted as a normal risk in game development#anyway this is getting rambly but the Point is that this goes beyond us wanting to make sure all sides of our story are equally appreciated#it is *partly* that - we do want players to experience the entirety of our artwork#but it's not just for our egos - it's so we can keep making art like this#i considered including this in the body of the post but money talk suuucks man#and i don't want anyone to think we're glaring at them in a holier than thou 'ah-ha! you don't want to play maeve's route because she's a#woman!' sort of way because i think that's a reductive way to look at things#people like what they like and there's nothing intrinsically wrong with that#but if you like that we're making a diverse story#with masc routes fem routes and nb routes#even if you don't personally want to romance x or y#it would help us if y'all play the platonic routes#we are trying our very very best to make the fem/nb routes interesting for Everyone so those stories don't get sidelined#and if you don't like them for their own sake - fair enough! can't win em all and we'll deeply appreciate that you tried anyway!

hiii! i just wanted to reach out n let you know that i just spent the last few days speed reading all your ao3 work bc i literally couldn't put it down. the way you write dick really just scratches my brain in the best way possible. he's a little (read: very) neurotic and it just. his motivations are so clear in your work, not in the sense that there isn't tension and anxiety but in that his core personality, his drive to help and the anger and trauma that has built him, his need to always be performing and catering to those around him, it comes across sososososos SO well. he was the first character that got me into comics and since then i've kinda stopped reading him bc i have lots of issues w tom taylors run (not the point so i digress) but you have really inspired me to go back and read more of his old stuff so thank you! you have such a clear grasp on his character and its something i admire very much! ur very very talented! and i really appreciate you sharing ur art! hope ur doin well :)
HI THIS IS SUCH A NICE COMPLIMENT???? <3333 This is so nice & sweet & it made my whole day!!! THANK YOU I AM HUGGING YOU ACROSS THE INTERNET AHHHHHH
he's a little (read: very) neurotic and it just. his motivations are so clear in your work, not in the sense that there isn't tension and anxiety but in that his core personality, his drive to help and the anger and trauma that has built him, his need to always be performing and catering to those around him
YEAH IT's HIMMMM i love this description <333
THANK YOU YOU ARE LOVELY & KIND PLS ACCEPT THIS DOG PICTURE AS TOKEN OF MY GRATITUDE
#YEAH he's fascinating to me because he can do casual cheeriness sometimes and mmm like. it's not like it's FAKE#it's real!! when he's relaxed & joking around he is relaxed. he's not deliberately disingenuous#and he gets a huge kick out of performing a lot of the time!! like. nobody is holding a gun to his head making him tell stupid puns#tim takes every opportunity to put his version of robin in the shadows whereas dick's impulse is to be center stage#AND YET!! AND YET!!! also he is also so so so sooooo neurotic#and he's SO PRIVATE and every time he's upset he compulsively keeps other people at a distance#and yeahhhh the performing!!!#it's interesting to me mmm okay look obviously all these characters are Very Very Different From Me in a lot of ways#but with performance specifically i have done things where performance is a major part of the job#and it's something i enjoy a lot! but it's something i enjoy paradoxically because i am myself pretty private#and part of what's fun about performing at least for me is that it's so mediated & so there's an escapist element#nobody is expecting your true self. like. it's not like lying exactly so much as being someone else for a while#and it can be a real relief to be someone else for a while & to help people when your own life is going badly#...but also the habit of instinctively keeping other people at a distance can be like. bad for you if you let it get out of control#and the way that both dick & tim relate to performance-as-escape is a big part of why those two characters click for me so hard#it's part of why i like superhero stories in basically all their forms?? that metaphor of the masks you wear etc etc etc#anyway he is delightful i am glad you like him too and i am very glad you like the stories <333#click this tag in case of sadness

Hey guys, i found out too late but webtoon is doing an event for their 9th anniversary where u can unlock 9 episodes for daily pass series instead of 1 (resets at 7pm, so if u unlock 9 right now u can unlock 9 more at 7pm today)... but it's ONLY for the month of july (i found so late im sorryđđ) so there's like 3 days left...
but I rly recommend checking these series out and unlocking as many daily pass eps as u can before july ends!!!
The Makeup Remover: This is like (one of) my fav webtoons EVER... u have to read it its got everything... Funny, cute art style, insightful + refreshing writing + social commentary that hits hard... A riveting story that reminds me of sports anime tournaments... AMAZING pacing and paneling/visual storytelling... extremely compelling well rounded characters, especially FEMALE CHARACTERS!!!, who have such incredible character dev, I cried so much bc I love them so much and it just hits so hard.... even the romance is well written even tho it's not the focus (unlike what the webtoon categorization says)... JUST READ IT PLS ITS MY FAV... It stuck w me long after I first finished it... and I'm on my 3rd read now and it hits just as hard as ever, I love it so much TT
When the Day Comes
Rly good slice of life... Even if u don't normally like slice of life genre, I think this is rly worth a read for everyone. I love the author's subtle, realistic writing style and pacing, they make even the smallest moments have impact and u can tangibly feel how each chara is feeling... It's a real treat to read and even if nothing else, the art and art style is GORGEOUS!!! Soso good and insp. But the writing is also really good, so it's a real gem... Also there's a canon lesbian chara who's rly well written and I love her deeply...
#webtoon recommendation#the makeup remover#when the day comes#please read as much as u can before this event is over#im sorry for telling u abt it so late i didnt know either... TT#few webtoons on the platform have rly impacted me and these 2 two of them...#TMR is 1 of those stories that i rly consider life changing...#like mp100#at least it is to me...#like i cant stop thinking abt it#and i think it helped me (start to) unlearn some harmful thinking and start to heal#in terms of how i see myself/how i subconsiously my self worth to looks/my views on makeup#like if i had to compare it to another makeup webtoon: true beauty#there's no comparison...#true beauty rly had nothing meaningful to say until the very end and without realizing it i gained sm unconscious insecurities from it#whereas TMR... rly felt like it was healing me after reading true beauty... and unlearning that stuff lmao

think some people also just want a hit tweet & to make their fav look cool bc âthey always hated this personâ when itâs like ummm no in 2013 they were just rowdy teenage boys who did absolutely anything on stage lmfao
exactly !!!!! people love to rewrite history esp in fandoms and esp on any social media platform for likes its so wild. like of all years to claim these boys hated each other and wanted each other dead 2013 is not the year.
#after 2013 is a different story#also acting like u knew the whole time about all the goings ins and outs#when these fans were probably 12#like people are obsessed with acting like they know everything or knew everything and its like i promise u u didnt !!!#saw a girl make a whole tiktok defending liam being like âmaybe my 19 year old self is missing somethingâ#yes baby a fully developed frontal lobe#think many things are true liam needs help#and liam is also an abuser#who should probably not get any attention#unless from medical professionals

I hope to one day come back to this idea, but Iâd love to illustrate the disney princesses in my own style, with some redesigns to some of them, or just adding neat details I think are cool, like elvish attributes. For now, sketches!
#disney#disney princess#disney prinesses#do you think I should use the original names for some of them?#another considerationâŠ#I ended up coming up with hcs for a lot of them while considering how to design them because I think itâd help with the process#like cinderella having very little sleep in her life#some princesses like Rapunzel and Briar Rose developing elfish characteristics#aurora in particular being very fae like#pocahontas being very self aware that sheâs a story rather than the true Matoaka#jasmineâs personality being the epitome of dreamworks face#etc etc#Im not rewatching the movies because#A) most of them are singed into my head from watching them over and over#and B) disney the company sucks lmao#the creatives working for them are so fucked dude who gave the rat so much political and economic power#unrelated Aurora gave me fat Welcome Home vibes with the creepy sleepy eyes and swirls in her hair#good

Thinking abt Taru fresh out of the Abyss, out with his siblings and spotting a rabbit or small animal. Instincts & habit kicking in ( those seldom lasted long in the Abyss, get it while he can, bring it to share with Master- ), him immediately setting to hunt and kill the creature then proudly bringing it back to his family, all smiles and blood-spattered, and being utterly thrown by the fact that he was not met with mildly disinterested praise, but sheer horror instead-
#hc; tartaglia#blood mention tw#animal death mention tw#//Happens only ONCE#//Bc ONCE was enough to really make him realize he can't HAVE what he had in the Abyss anymore#//In some ways; it's a good thing; he supposes. He now won't have to worry about what & when he'll eat next#//Won't have to worry abt being stalked and ambushed by creatures that would give most anyone nightmares (he sure as hell has them)#//But now; he's just been so Altered from how he used to be#//He's restless; body honed to attack and defend from the monstrous threats he's dealt with all that time#//He's got a battlelust no one could ever hope to match; bc those harrowing experiences truly got to the point of THRILLING him#//He MISSES the way his Master looked after him; being treated so softly is just TOO much now#//Prolly had moments where he just had a total disconnect from his family; just couldn't really bond with them again until after he enliste#//Though I like to think maybe he was able to with his younger sibs; bc they were too young to Get the rammifications of what happened#//Lil Teucer always smiling so bright like the sun; when the others look at him with hopelessness or despair; always asking for stories#//Anthon; always trying to get in his arms; whenever he starts dissociating or makes a face bc the elder family members upset him some way#//Tonia; helping fix him up when he comes home after a brawl; her scolding the only he really listens to; him pledging to be her knight#//Him damn near resigning himself that they might be the only ones who love him after everything (he doesn't realize that's not true)#until he gets enlisted & becomes a Harbinger. His more 'behaved' self in their eyes being palatble enough for things to slowly return to#'normal'; even if they can all tell (save maybe the youngest ones) that something is still Off about him. But it's FINE; all FINE; now#//'Better than before'; they would say#//Which is why he would place SUCH value and favor on a partner that GETS that part of him. Who would ENABLE him rather than restrict#//He wouldn't ask for them too; but he will NOT let them go; EVER; once he realizes

Begging true crime armchair detectives to understand that you are not Sherlock Holmes you are not special you will not solve the next big case you are doing nothing but putting misinformation out there and spreading harmful rumors and stereotypes. Real life and real tragedies are not murder mystery games you are actively harming people with your insane theories you are centering yourselves rather than the victims you are speaking over survivors and families and friends you are making up batshit insane lies just because you have a âfeelingâ and itâs not okay itâs not harmless itâs legitimately dangerous and heartless and itâs fucking disgusting how you refuse to see that
#I understand having an interest in true crime I understand wanting to follow certain cases#but having an internet connection does not give you to credentials and the ability to solve a case#and these are real people who deserve respect when you speak about them and there are families and survivors who ask for stories to be#shared to raise awareness#but making wild guesses and accusations is not spreading awareness#itâs attention seeking its clout chasing and its dangerous#it is not âsuspiciousâ that a women survived a massacre itâs a fucking /miracle/#and to begin placing doubt and blame and suspicion on her just to grab peopleâs attention and make the case sound âjuicerâ#is fucking appalling how fucking dare you#itâs happening with this case a tiktoker is getting rightfully sued for making wild accusations against a woman who was a complete stranger#to her#about a case she has absolutely nothing to do with#it happened with the gabby petito case#there were goddamn self proclaimed âpsychicsâ posting videos#claiming they could ~feel her spirit~#claiming she was absolutely alive or claiming she died this way and that and they knew for sure because they were âpsychicâ#I think people who claim to be psychic to prey on grieving families and draw attention from big cases are fucking disgusting#it happened here!!!! in my town!!!!!!!#a woman was kidnapped!!!!!#and instead of focusing on her and helping her everyone focused one one interview her boyfriend gave on the news#I saw this interview myself as it aired#and people online were claiming they knew for sure he absolutely did it it had to be him he HAD to be guilty#and while itâs true they often investigate the partner first in these cases#these armchair detectives were claiming he was just like Chris fucking watts#âbecause he moved his arms a certain wayâ#because behavior analysis videos have poisoned peopleâs brains into seeing every blink every stretch every twitch as suspicious#the case was solved shortly later. he had absolutely nothing to do with it. this man lost his wife and child and was deemed guilty#by the Internet. because he raised his arms above his head in stress????#fuck off#itâs fucking gross

Did a study of a panel i like for a manga with absolutely my favorite female character i've seen yet and thought i'd post it here too in the hopes of eventually finding fans of this series when they inevitably, like me, look for more content of this story :'D
I could gush about this funny, lovestarved, absolutely downright sympathetic and villainous lady who absolutely deserves to be family with the protag for so many hours if you let me she is literally so perfect and everything I have ever wanted from female characters before.
I've gone from going "ooooo she's such a cool antagonist who is such a funny little mystery i LOVE her" to "yeah she's kind of on the insane spectrum but tbf who wouldn't be fucked up in her situation TwT" to "i WILL cry over her and she is completely in the right for doing what she's doing and i can't believe i ever believed she wasn't the heroine she's supposed to be :'D"
#the mighty extra: one girl changes the world#helene de belliana#my love#i found the raws but haven't found if there's a fandom for this manga#if it exists it's probs overseas but idk how to find said fandom then bc searching by title is useless fghjgfhj#the manga itself isn't perfect but my god does it have a lot of heart put into it#i can tell the creator adores Helene because there's no fucking way they don't at this point#just woke up to read chapter 72 and i am#melting#for baby Helene and hopefully getting to know more about her relationship with the original Lyla#because that last panel of her looking uncertain is so adorbs#but also im not used to seeing Helene with long hair and for once i prefer short hair to long hair#literally Helene is such a cool character how do i write a character as cool as her#and the fact that she has a love interest (debatably) who is is on manipulative terms with atm is so interesting#esp because he's the only one she's showing her true nature to atm and im !!! at the implications of that#her being mischievous towards Paris (even if she's meanly funny about it) and the fact she used to be mischievous as a kid...#waaah i wanna see her and Paris develop a relationship together beyond their current sarcastic partnership#especially because there's something so neat about the funny self-interested dragon man obeying her without reason to#at least the narrative hasn't addressed why he would bother??? bc she's neither offered him the fragment nor is he completely amiable to he#but also i can't help but think there was some omitting going on after their second to last scene together...#damn this manga gives so much food for thought and for that alone this story is instantly in my top 10 rankings#For Helene alone it's probably close to my number 2 spot lmao#anyways yes i stan Helene and at this point i think im her number 1 fan and defender until (hopefully) proven otherwise~#bc god do i need more content for her waaaah

Iâm relieved to find out when i finish case 3 in silent reading the translation still has a part 4 AND extras ToT
like god i admire priest SO much. i think in many ways the writing choices in silent reading are SO ballsy. especially now that i know what publishers push toward regarding standard/norms look like all other novels don't deviate dont be brave or unique. like i know priest self published online THEN gets a print deal but like. to decide you as a public commented on author with a HUGE following where ppl buy your chapters? is gonna write THIS?Â
its brave i think. its brave to trust an audience to read 77 chapters of truly fucked up crime story thats main point IS TO critique the world and justice and human nature. before you get into the romance danmei readers most wanted. to make readers both feel bad for and terrified of a little girl. to remind readers every poor immigrant with a bad life who dies is a TRAGEDY and a horrible loss that society has too much allowed. to remind readers that the justice system fails to bring many people closure or help.Â
(babes below the cut turned into a MEGA meta on zhoudu and their completely different views on the world)
and THEN of course the LEADS priest decides to write arcs for in this. its ballsy to write a lead the other lead thinks might be capable of being a killer. to write a man objectively with as many red flags as. fei du as THE lead. like? think of 2ha and the people who hate mo ran too much to try it even just hearing of mo ran lol. fei du objectively in some ways is HARDER to empathize with and view as 'an ordinary relatable man'. mo ran when you take that hes been abused is mainly just a kid who wanted to help people typical xianxia hero style and gain power for revenge on REALLY cruel people in a really cruel Fucked up world he lives in thats painted as so much worse than our real earth world.Â
fei du? well he outwardly is pretty so i guess like the strangers he meets people tolerate that. but the little we get of our past lets us know he killed animals with his hands (and again its as BRAVE a writing choice as the lead in kdrama Flower of Evil whoâs raised by a serial killer and trained to be like him and unable to empathize with others and he fights so HARD to be a good person but heâs no oneâs definition of a safe guy to trust - but somehow he met his wife and had a daughter and loves them so dearly and he IS and has always been a good man and good kid who went through awful stuff because people were afraid of his inability to emotionally connect and his abused background). Fei du is like HIM. Fei Du self harms to an intense degree, trying to curb impulses trained in him from a young age and a natural propensity mixed with a raising teaching him and Hammering into him that death is the only absolute to feel comfort in. He couldâve become a murderer, an abuser, in the sense of his father pushing him toward it and so many things couldâve affected it - like luo wenzhou simply being not there. Fei du is fighting before anything else, himself and his own fears about himself and who he is and who he even wants to be ultimately. Mo Ran gets cursed and becomes an evil emperor, and without that was a brute revenge okay-with man (and a black lotus trope so honestly more tolerable as a violent rage fest reading-norm wise). But fei du? is just an ordinary modern man working in an office who thinks it would be nice to choke someone and watch them break down hopeless. Whoâs probably felt and thought everything su luozhan did (now iâm losing track... thereâs things to be said for mo ran and his abuse making him cruel and lash out like fei du and su luozhan too...but moving on for now). fei du is a realistic âmonster.â or an almost one. heâs a man who if taken for all he is, much of society would want removed and taken away, or see as an inevitable evil of a rich man who canât be stopped by most. heâs like Flower of Evilâs lead and the bad rich kid who lashed out and killed people, combined into one.Â
priest makes him understandable, because priest is amazing at writing very good characters and depicting them and showing their nuances and evolution. and also because luo wenzhou loves him unconditionally. luo wenzhou chooses to love the hurting child, and in doing so comes to see fei du for all the multitudes of value he has as a person, for the treasure he is in ALL of himself with the bad and the good as a whole. (sort of like Flower of Evil main characters sister always loved him and saw him as her little brother needlessly hurt by the world, or the wife who eventually realized the man she loved was part of it and is real its just hes more than she knew before - luo wenzhou is both in one). and because luo wenzhou can see him, all of him, and love and appreciate all of it even EVEN when it horrifies him? even when he thinks and knows its beyond the scope of acceptable or normal, even when heâs hearing fei du lose himself in a viewpoint of the world that is so FAR from luo wenzhous ability to understand or view it. luo wenzhou STILL thinks - how do i reach out so we connect and meet halfway, even if i have to wade into that dark and try to understand, even if i have to explain the regular world like its fantastically rare and incomprehensible to him until he gets how other people like me feel. luo wenzhou thinks: no matter who he is, in fact with ALL of who he is, iâm going to go up to fei du and connect to him, we are going to eat and be okay, we are going to carve out a life together and feel whole and safe and connected there. and so for all fei du is, when we are given luo wenzhouâs fathomless endless care for him itâs impossible not to also open our hearts to fei du. to assume no matter how different he is from us or feels things, or how inhuman or whatever, heâs a an amazing individual and worthy of being understood and accepted into our care too. because luo wenzhouâs viewpoint is hard to fight. even if we think luo wenzhou were wrong, if we didnât get sucked in, we canât fight the fact luo wenzhou unconditionally feels this and it wonât change, it will drive the story.Â
thereâs the choice priest made, to make an âordinaryâ enough hero of a story (a policeman - legal official solving crimes - who is almost superhero like in his original desire to help people and bring justice, who still ignores wounds and tries to be Larger than Life and do More than the average man, trying to save even with his very real human faults of a nepotism parentage and a short temper in his youth and a naivety he had to lose). heâs old but not jaded, heâs realistic and skilled now but still driven to give out justice, still hurts in his heart when he canât help someone enough. and it all kicks off with a kid named fei du, and luo wenzhou wanting to heroically bring him justice and closure and save him like Superhero savior of the Cosmos young luo wenzhou did... and failing. failing. failing and having the realization he WILL fail people, legal justice is sometimes impossible or has dead ends and horrible things happen with no resolution and no one saved, and still wanting to care about fei du, wanting to do his best to help him even when it will Never ever be enough. Fei du will NEVER be saved. can not be saved. the damage has already been done (and after the basement scene, luo wenzhou realizes even into adulthood, even once fei duâs dad was in a coma, luo wenzhou still couldnât even protect fei du from Himself, yet another way luo wenzhou can never be that Cosmic Superhero, not even that local guardian to one single boy, he loves fei du unconditionally and that does NOT mean heâll ever be enough to protect him or undo the damage).Â
but luo wenzhou tries anyway. and its in that trying, that is so worth it. itâs not the outcome, its the act of trying, the âceremonyâ and how it means he cares. how it means he views fei du as worthy of it (and he really views by extension so MANY worthy of it who he also can or canât help to varying degrees, and it rubbed off on fei du, because now hes the kind of man who also finds it awful a poor young man named He zhongyi dies and is willing to go to any lengths to try and get justice for him, for any particular person). Anyway, the point is luo wenzhou is an understandable hero typical of his story type. His heroics are the super-detectives who want to save everyone, his failings are the cops like Lee Dong Sik in Beyond Evil who take their small tasks seriously and are aware they may never save their world or Do Enough and justice can fail but theyâre still making Their Choices every day, their baggage and damage and aged lessons coming along. He is an ordinary enough choice for a lead. His most remarkable trait in my mind, that makes him stand out, is his decision once upon a time to care about fei du unconditionally. its a choice a parent makes when they adopt, a bodyguard makes in a fantasy tale when they decide to dedicate their life to their ruler, in a realism grounded story like Silent Reading real life red flags just usually keep such a decision from being made.
Take Flower of Evil - its normal for the wife to be suspicious her husband is a killer and investigate it before ultimately picking his side. Take Beyond Evil - Juwon is younger and has fucked up, but Lee Dong Sik makes fucked decisions he doesnât expect of the younger, makes the choice to cross lines he feels the younger shouldnât and maybe no one should but heâs too far gone to quit his path now. Luo Wenzhou sees fei du, the teenager, making death threats and you canât abandon your own kid. But itâs not his kid, its a stranger like su luozhan whoâs killed something, lashing out and feeling unlike other humans and without any real parent who gave them unconditional love (maybe fei du had his mom once a week when she was alive but with health issues and spousal issues and dadâs nonstop threat of a presence on them, fei du was not getting that secure unconditional love environment). its a stranger completely, and luo wenzhou just decides to love him anyway.Â
So whyâs he a brave writing choice? to use a character like luo wenzhou who does decide to love someone like that unconditionally. before the romance even starts. heâs not fei duâs family, heâs not fei duâs mentor until he Chooses to be, heâs not fei duâs lover when he makes the decision or long time spouse (like in Flower of Evil), heâs not a man whoâs got enough shared experiences to understand fei duâs perspective (in fact it terrifies luo wenzhou the gulf there is between each otherâs experience and view of the world). but luo wenzhou, the man that he is, chooses to love fei du unconditionally.Â
it makes sense for his character of course, because priest is good at writing characters. while luo wenzhou fits the relative norm for his genre, it also makes sense his particular life leads him to a choice i rarely see in these stories. Heâs an idealistic naive rash âheroâ rookie cop. He sees a child cope with the death of his mom and his world shatter, look at him with an intense resolve that BEGS Luo Wenzhou to BE the hero that can give fei du justice. Luo Wenzhou, the rookie who think himself Hero of the Galaxy, has been dealing with petty crime and this is one of (or possibly the FIRST) time anyone has given him the responsibility and Ability to attempt to serve justice on this scale. This is his first opportunity to SOLVE a possible murder, GIVE someone closure, and truly change their life on such a scale. Of course heroic-dreaming Luo Wenzhou, thinking himself important and inhumanly capable of anything to help someone, takes up that look fei du gives him and decides âthen I will give you the justice you need. I will resolve this for you.â A character like him? what other choice would he make.
And fei du is both the first time the world gives him the chance to be the Big Hero Savior he wanted to be, and the reality check that he can NOT be that Hero. That such a heroic feat is impossible, is unreasonable, is not something anyone will be able to live up to forever without fail - especially him, who turns out is lacking much of what he needs to succeed. But even if he had ALL the tools to succeed: even if Luo Wenzhou had ALREADY been a Captain, with rich influential and politically powerful allies, and had been able to legally adopt fei du and take actual political action against fei duâs dad? Even if he HAD all that, luo wenzhou would not have been able to save fei du - from the pain of his childhood, from the loss of his mom, the mystery was too hard to be solved at the time (or luo wenzhou of stubbornness i believe wouldâve found a way to solve it), or from fei duâs own self hatred and self harm (just given how privately fei du keeps part of himself - he kept so much from luo wenzhou and probably always wouldâve).Â
So even with everything, Luo Wenzhou wouldâve failed. And at least failing then, as a rookie, he learned he WASNâT superman, he wasnât infailable and Enough to save people inherently, and took the experience that heâd have to WORK and struggle and fight every single TIME to truly try and save people with him as he was promoted and gained power. That failure made him a better savior for future victims heâd help: because heâd be self aware that failure was possible, and helping others was going to be a struggle and require All his dedication every time, and is never a guarantee.Â
Luo Wenzhou picking fei du changed their lives. He failed fei du (and always would have) and in doing so it made him a better person to help people moving forward. and in the moment he chose to try and save fei du, an impossible thing with no Real Guarantee (as Luo Wenzhou would learn later and not ever promise so freely with certainty again), fei du DID see him as a savior. As a hope. As the first guardian angel in his life, the first belief that ANYONE outside of himself could help him. Could fix anything in his life - could explain why his mom who loved him would choose to leave him, could explain if it was his own fault for not loving her âenoughâ or being too monstrous or if it was someone elseâs fault, who could take his father to justice for the awful things heâd done when to fei du his father was the god of his world able to kill and do anything and make fei du do Anything no matter how awful. For the first time, fei du truly had a hope in something able to HELP him. And Luo Wenzhou failed. And fei du experienced both a temporary believe in the kind of âjustice is served to the evil, help is provided to the innocentâ that children usually simplistically learn at first but he never did (because his father didnât teach him that but that the predators do what they want). and then experienced a cold harsh horrible shock that it WAS a lie, that the person telling him to believe it - luo wenzhou - was wrong. that fei duâs view of the world was âcorrectâ and the false hero heâd believed in, luo wenzhou, was a fool who believed falsehoods and couldnât do anything real. that no one Could help fei du.Â
and yet. despite all that. despite that failure shaping them both. it also tied them together. for all luo wenzhou failed, he still decided Inexplicably to be responsible for it. Instead of taking the loss, he went on to keep helping fei du. Caring. With Tao Ran as a contrast, its clear how excessive those actions were compared to the norm. Luo Wenzhou dragged Tao Ran into helping him take Fei Du after school, so fei du was rarely left alone in an empty house, into taking him out for food so heâd eat when the help at his house didnât cook, these are all the acts of a godfather or a makeshift caretaker. Theyâre more than a responsible police officer shouldâve ever gotten involved in a victimâs life - the most luo wenzhou shouldâve appropriately done, was maybe call child services and insist and fight that no matter âhow rich older master fei wasâ the child still was in an enviornment that needs either an after school program for some socialization and social support, or a caretaker to move in, or if at all possible to get to live with a different guardian. But Luo wenzhou, knowing whatâs appropriate, couldnât abandon that âidealic heroicâ persona he learned failed and was unrealistic, still trying adamantly to be it for fei du. Even failure after failure. He wouldâve adopted fei du probably, possibly, if the person heâd been fighting for custody against hadnât been so filthy rich heâd have never had a chance. (never mind the legal issues im sure would keep him from getting custody, but the intent was there). He took fei du in as much as possible for their circumstances, then expanded that to full on parenting. To checking fei duâs report cards, to making sure he ate right, to checking on his healthcare, to commenting on his dating life as he grew up into a playboy partier, to insisting he pick a career, to worrying how he adjusted when his dad died and he had to take the business, to giving him gifts for birthdays and just cause (both secretly and also full on remembering his birthday when others didnât), to the simpleness of scolding fei du like a regular teen caught cursing when heâd threaten violent, the simpleness of taking the Extreme-ness of fei duâs worse personality moments and simply saying âwell whatever fucked up stuff you did or want to do, come sit down and have dinner, come on and join me.â i care about you. lets eat. i accept you into our little family of two no matter what, and every meal is a ceremony reminding you this is permanent and secure and always here for you.Â
luo wenzhou canât save fei du as a child, canât save him as an adult from himsel, canât save him throughout of a great many deal awful things. but he can give him a safe stable eternal home in the both of them, that is always ALWAYS there. always opening itâs doors, always mobile and coming to fei du when he feels isolated and abandoned and like he doesnât even belong to the same world, it exists everywhere. itâs his. its a thing he never had before luo wenzhou. but it exists now. and it is THAT which luo wenzhou can provide.Â
He canât save fei du from the many horrors of the world, from the monsters within himself. But he can give fei du a home that exists no matter what horrors exist or happen, a home that fei du will always belong IN no matter how monstrous he is, no matter what heâs done or what happens.Â
Maybe once upon a time the end of the week with his mom, had been the closest fei du had to that kind of âhome.â Some safe place where he was loved even with everything different about him, with the fucked up views his dad pressed on him, with the way he felt different from others and uncomprehending of the world. His mom, fleetingly, would be there with the house made ready for him, would be happy to see him and simply be with him.Â
Luo Wenzhou carved out a home for him after that, when he lost that, and made it permanent. It exists nonstop, always, whenever fei du is with luo wenzhou. waiting for fei du when theyâre apart, always open for him to return.Â
wow i got distracted in zhoudu dynamic stuff lol. back to whatever the point was... priest writing brave. so. while i love all of zhouduâs very grey area roles filled up and overlapping dynamic. i think the above portion explains well WHY it makes sense for them. Why their dynamic makes sense it would happen, from luo wenzhouâs perspective. why luo wenzhou would choose to do it, and how it would end with him and fei du connecting deeply.Â
Because thatâs the kind of man luo wenzhou is and thatâs where he was in his life, in the perfect place to make 1 single heroic Ideal decision and fail, but still feel too attached to actually quit and cut his losses. He could never cut the loss that was âfailing fei du.â he had to keep providing the only consolation he could, a home for fei du, even if he could provide nothing more. To Luo Wenzhou he will always be Fei Duâs very mortal and flawed Guardian Angel who couldnât move heaven to save him or help him, but still took the job as his lifeâs work. And to Fei Du he will always be that very mortal Guardian Angel who lied that he was Strong enough when he wasnât, when angels donât exist and he was just a man, when justice doesnât exist only this lying flawed incapable Luo Wenzhou trying to act like there is still justice. But to Fei Du, flaws and all, itâs still his Guardian Angel despite it all. In his world there are no angels, no true heroes. But this person is trying to be one, in Fei Duâs fucked up world where none exist, anyway. Luo Wenzhou is still trying to be one for him. And thatâs worth something because it has MEANING, the choice to try to be an angel in a world with NONE means something, its the effort that counts. Itâs the ceremony of doing it, the act, that means everything. (As luo wenzhouâs final lines in i think chapter ~79 hammer home).
Their dynamic makes sense, for them. Of course itâs where theyâd end up, how theyâd develop. How theyâd get so enmeshed and close and Bigger Than People to each other (both symbolic Roles to each other while being gravely aware their symbol is actually just a flawed human who will never live up to it). To Fei Du, Luo Wenzhou will always be a Guardian Angel and that IS just a weak human who will fail the job. To Luo Wenzhou, Fei Du will always be his charge to Save, even though saving him is impossible, even though heâs failed for 7 years, even though fei du will never let him and both of them are More Than Aware this mission is impossible. Luo Wenzhou knows fei du is not a charge, was never one - or only one for the first time until Luo Wenzhou first failed.Â
Fei Du is a grown man who has done bad things, horrible things to himself, who views the world so differently from Luo Wenzhou his morality might not even be able to compare with his, who is a man he canât fully understand but tries to reach out any try to anyway. Every single time. What a brave choice. To be commited to unconditionally loving someone and trying to understand them, even painfully knowing you never will. We may truly never be able to understand another person completely. But in these twoâs case, they truly have such different internal worlds, it is a painful point for them both that they really never will exist in the otherâs world and grasp it fully.Â
Fei Du is brave too. He knows Luo Wenzhou is an ordinary man, who belongs to the world most people understand and accept as reality. He knows heâll never understand Luo Wenzhou, will always see some of Luo Wenzhouâs beliefs as lies or falsehoods most people seem to believe or assume or operate based on that Fei Du will never ever understand or connect to or operate under unless he tries very hard to force himself to act unnaturally. In a way, it is like an Angel loving a Demon. In reality they both realize theyâre not an angel and devil - Luo Wenzhou realizes heâs painfully human and incapable, Fei Du doesnât see himself as a demon he just thinks all humans are truly this way or walking-corpses unaware of it and Luo Wenzhou is another deluded soul lying to himself or simply way too uncomprehending to ever see the âtruthâ of the world the way Fei Du is Only capable of seeing it. But Fei Du sees his own awareness as monstrous, in that it makes him a monster to those ordinary people and their entire world framework. And yet to Luo Wenzhou, heâs not a monster for it, just another flawed imperfect person like Luo Wenzhou is. They put themselves into the Roles of Angel and Demon, while knowing its partly untrue but unable to stop living that way when it comes to each other. Fei Du canât help seeing Luo Wenzhou as an angel, in the warped way heâd view one in his world - a deluded hero whoâs incapable, but still the closest thing to any angel in Fei Duâs world could exist. Fei Du canât help seeing himself as a Demon, even though itâs normal to him he canât shake the awareness its how heâd be in Luo Wenzhou (ordinary peopleâs) framework of the world. And then they meet in the middle somehow. And somehow even existing in different realities cause they perceive the world SO differently, Fei Du somehow catches a glimpse of himself in Luo Wenzhouâs worldviews: an innocent. An ordinary man. Not a demon, not even different from others. But someone who could and DOES exist in Luo Wenzhouâs world where people who are hurt deserve justice and people attempt to give them it, where cruelty is not the norm and not comprehensible to the masses. Fei Du isnât compatible with that world - heâs not comprehensible to them. But somehow Luo Wenzhou can look at him, and place fei du into that world. And for the moment theyâre together Fei Du EXISTS in both worlds. Is brought into the world outside his, that he canât be part of or relate to or understand, and see as if heâs like Luo Wenzhou almost. And he wants to be one of the people providing justice to those who are harmed, one of the people who views cruelty outside of the norm and combats it. Could he do this, view things this way, if Luo Wenzhou didnât connect their worlds by being connected to Fei Du?
And in contrast, in Fei Duâs world the cruelty is the norm, there is no one innocent only those harmed and those self aware enough they also cause it. There is no justice, only an attempt of power and control until the inevitable death. People like Luo Wenzhou cannot exist. In Fei Duâs mind, people like Luo Wenzhou can at most only be struggling helplessly against nature, hurting themselves by prodding other violent people, giving no justice because thereâs no way to give it, just struggling to fight for an outcome that is impossible to provide. But because its Luo Wenzhou, Fei Duâs worldview shifts to accomodate him: Luo Wenzhou is a pathetic man fighting for an outcome that can never occur... but he keeps trying anyway. And because heâs Fei Duâs personal angel, even though angels canât exist here in fei duâs view of the world? Fei Du almost wants to believe maybe thereâs worthiness in someone trying anyway. To be like an angel. To do what nothing in his world does, want what canât be achieved in his view of the world. And thatâs where their worlds connect. Where Fei Duâs world connects to Luo Wenzhouâs and lets a sliver of Luo Wenzhou into his as something Possible. And is that why Fei Du wades into the water of doing work like Luo Wenzhou? Is that why he cares when a son dies and leaves a mom behind. In his world to care is illogical and pointless and has no use. But Luo Wenzhou IS in Fei Duâs world, and he cares. So Fei Du feels like... maybe heâll care too, even if it is useless. Heâll let himself care still, like Luo Wenzhou cares.Â
There is use in the ACT of caring. Even if it changes nothing. There is worth in the act of caring, even if it fails to save anyone or stop harm. Is that one of the themes of Silent Reading I wonder... its certainly a theme of these twoâs relationship.
Itâs the point of Luo Wenzhou trying to explain to Fei Du what their connection is. Itâs the connection of their worlds - Luo Wenzhou in our usually normally accepted one, and Fei Du in his hopeless one. Itâs also the connecting point of their personalities - through knowing each other theyâve both developed a level of caring. Caring despite finding it cannot save, cannot stop the awful things that have happened and will later.Â
And so we get to a point where Fei Du cares about Luo Wenzhou, even though Wenzhou failed him and still does. Even though Luo Wenzhou will never fully understand him or the world he exists in.Â
I never realized just how wholly separate their concepts of the worlds they exist in were till I wrote this damn.Â
>>I keep losing the point in zhoudu meta lmao. Anyway back to priest. What I am impressed by (among many things), is priest writes that kind of dynamic as mentioned above. The ânormal ordinary heroâ type Luo Wenzhou who can never connect to the kind of person/world Fei Du exists in, and vice versa. But somehow they meet halfway and see through the keyhole of the other personâs world anyway. Take one step in, while still being unable to enter the otherâs world and abandon their own. Itâs impossible. But it is. Because they choose to do it, no matter how impossible it is.Â
And its this relationship that outside on paper on some novel summary is the tags idk older/younger, rich/gruff, cruel/heroic whatever. When I walked in once upon a time, with the impression from a tagged summary it was going to be a cold genuis with a fascination for analysing cruelty, and a heroic gruff type combatting him and helping him âgrow a heartâ I did not expect this kind of deep relationship dynamic i actually got. I didnât expect a relationship thatâs part caretaker/child, part opponents striving to fight yet itâs to connect their irreconcilable worlds, part lovers who were already closer than usual lovers before the romance even enters the picture. I didnât expect 7 years of failing each other, but still being unconditional care there. Fei Du is not just a âcold geniusâ heâs given the traits of a man from a world where he sees himself as the ordinary monster of it, and he will never âgrow a heartâ and come to see the world like Luo Wenzhou (Iâm 70% through the novel but i donât think he will). And Luo Wenzhou for all his physical actions is not a gruff man with a âwarm heartâ a la some sweetie pie emotional warm hero. He was an idealistic idiot who got a reality shock he wasnât Superman, who grew into a realist. He is a guardian angel who is not actually an angel and KNOWS he isnât but canât stop himself from trying to be for Fei Du, the first and only time he tried to be one, refusing to quit this mission even though itâs been lost a million times and itâs painful for both of them for him to keep pretending heâs an angel instead of a man. Luo Wenzhouâs warm emotional âhopes and idealsâ donât touch Fei Du and âchange himâ (although Fei Du trying to understand Luo Wenzhouâs pov at least does open him up to witnessing Tao Ranâs idealism and kindness even though he finds it naive).Â
While their failures with each other certainly change them, they donât actually change the core of each other - they are permanently too distinctly different people who see the world in an incompatibly different way. Growing up with Luo Wenzhou certainly influenced Fei Duâs behaviors, and gave him a peek into seeing the world differently, but he still ultimately exists mainly in his own world. Even with shared experiences together now, working together, itâs not shifting Luo Wenzhou into a person who sees the world as inherently cruel and monstrous like Fei Du, and its not shifting Fei Du into seeing justice as natural and possible. In some couple stories the worldviews would gradually mesh as the shared experiences grew - but no, not with these two.Â
The beauty of their relationship is they Will exist in their separate worlds, their incompatible worldviews and interpretations of it. But they still connect. They still carved out this space of a home together, that exists in both worlds. That has a window to each otherâs worlds where they ask the other to explain what that unimaginable windowâs view means, how the hell the other person is interpreting it because they donât see it the same way. This shared home, that lets them concieve of a world where the other person can and DOES exist in their world. Fei Du sees himself as a monster in a world where itâs natural, and where angels donât exist let alone just heroes - but Luo Wenzhou is in his world. Impossibly. Heâs there, heâs part of it, heâs relentless, and he always will be. In Luo Wenzhouâs world, Fei Du exists and is just as inevitably part of it as Luo Wenzhou is. Even though Fei Du canât conceive of existing in Luo Wenzhouâs kind of world - luo wenzhou sees Fei Du WITH him there, dragging him in by refusing to accept that Fei Du couldnât be there.Â
Fei Duâs heart (in my prediction anyway lol) is not going to grow 3 sizes and decide justice is possible, is expected, and heâs an ordinary person who thinks like the others and feels wronged when heâs not given help and doesnât instinctively think cold things. But Fei Duâs heart, despite himself and knowing Luo Wenzhou lied about being an angel in Fei Duâs world where none exists and failing him, holds a permanent space for Luo Wenzhou. A permanent part of him lets itself open the window to what Luo Wenzhou sees, and even though Fei Du simply canât understand it, he lets the wind come in. Lets the idea drift through his own world: that for all justice is impossible, try to fight to do justice anyway. Try to conceive that people deserve it anyway, even if there is no way they do. Just humor the idea. Try anyway. Itâs okay to try, even if the result will fail. Luo Wenzhou tries anyway, so you Fei Du can indulge in trying too despite it all. Fei Duâs heart has Luo Wenzhou in it, broken through the window and bringing the breeze, residing warmly in it and bringing all the âidealistic-fictionalâ warmth from the world âother ordinary society thinksâ and decorates. Brings warm cooked noodles, shrimp, sweet candy so sweet its better than Fei Duâs world but here IT IS. Brings hope and determination and belief that doesnât exist in Fei Duâs world, but here it is, in residence in his heart, with good smells that make him hungry, that taste like nothing thatâs supposed to exist. And Fei Du thinks: its a lie, it canât exist, it canât be this good, it canât be permanent... it must be an illusion or something that will crumble later. But its Luo Wenzhou... so Fei Du tries indulging the temporary goodness anyway, even if it WILL crumble. Like how Luo Wenzhou will still fail. Even so, even though this is nicer than any dinner in his world with his mom and dad had been, so much nicer he believes it impossible and a lie and just as hard to rely on as trying to grab the wind. Heâll still sit down and accept it for the experience it is. Because Luo Wenzhou brought it and said it was their home. And even if it makes no sense, somehow in their shared point of connection - this place where their worlds can almost overlap? Itâs worth it to try. Itâs the act of trying thatâs important, not the outcome later. Not whatâs possible or impossible. But that here, they can coexist somehow. That they tried very hard to carve out this home right here. They can be brave enough to believe the other sometimes about their other worlds, even if they can never move into the otherâs. Try to go on faith on the other person, and try out the other personâs way of living in their very different world, even though it makes no sense.Â
Itâs a love story about yes, being seen as all of who you are and still loved unconditionally (something often appealing in fiction romance). But also like. Its this heavy reality of No, actually, you will NOT ever be seen completely and understood completely by another person. We are not Fei Du and we are not usually seeing the world and itâs âlawsâ as so drastically different as him. But like him, when we meet people even as close as we may become, as much as we share, another person will truly never see and feel exactly as we do. Words are imperfect, peopleâs past experiences and personalities are all different, people canât read your mind and see your history and feel your emotions. There is no perfect fullproof way to get someone to truly understand you completely. And thatâs okay. You can be loved, you can connect, even when thatâs true. There is worth in making connections, even if we will ever only be understood imperfectly, only partly be able to view the world or something the same way. Even if someone canât understand why X is that way about you or why you canât believe Y the same way they do (even when you try your best to). There is space in all of us to find a way to still love whole heartedly, to choose to Try to understand. There is power in choosing to try, and keep choosing to, even though itâs an impossible endeavor to ever fully accomplish. Like Luo Wenzhou, we choose anyway. Like Fei Du, we realize thereâs worth in just the act of trying. Even if we are never fully seen, can never fully grasp the other, thereâs care there. The care builds a space for us to connect. A space for us to feel close enough, safe and loved.Â
#silent reading#lb#meta#zhoudu#zhoufei#WELL this turned into a mega zhoudu meta and character analysis#character analysis#i will say though. damn.#i think this is true of many (possibly all of priests works but i havent read all) of priests novels#is that they really CAN be delved into analysis wise as works of literature#Silent Reading alone? It has a LOT to say about society and justice and our expectations we're raised on#versus how society really acts. versus the unique ways individuals VARY WILDLY in their perception of it#which i didnt even go into in this meta. but in a Literature Class that'd probably be the main theme.#but then also? fei du and luo wenzhou really ARE doing something so unique with their dynamic that's worth discussing#the fact that like they DO put each other on pillars. while also being self aware those pillars are LIES. and then yet they keep#functioning as if both aware the other are only human AND still putting faith in the pillars they put them on#the fact that in this story the two NEVER reconcile their worldviews into one shared one more or less. which usually happens in these#stories of different ppl. think Goodbye My Princess or Love and Redemption or The Untamed - those different ppl#end up experiencing things that help them come to understand each others pov and perspective of the world.#but the thing is lwz and fd will NOT compromise or change their core world view understandings. lwz just CANT see the world#as inherently monstrous and cruel and kindness as so fleeting and impotent. its against his entire belief system and experiences and#against who he IS. and fei du just Cannot see the world like the ordinary masses. let alone like luo wenzhou who#when young saw himself as the pure idealistic super Hero. to fei du a man like luo wenzhou just Cannot exist and succeed or and just IS#wrong. but their choice to connect anyway is a bridge between worlds. they cant even see eye to eye. but they can choose to connect anyway#despite it.#and internally grow hope and awareness and motivation. even if their worlds remain the same

I am nothing if not a backseat writer and I find it somewhat repetitive to continuously defeat the villain through "They were so afraid of my reputation that they just turned and ran" so I'm choosing to believe that the real reason the Vashta Nerada let the Doctor pull off his plan is because they recognized that the planet was about to self-destruct, taking them along with it, and the Doctor was the person best able to prevent that outcome. They weighed letting all the people go as an acceptable one-time price; they could of course renege on the agreement and just eat everyone after they popped back out, but they couldn't guarantee that CAL wouldn't 1) start downloading people again the second anything went wrong, or 2) go into self-destruct mode again. Losing a one-time meal of 4000 odd people is better than losing your life and your planet altogether.
#the valley is posting#the thing is that for all i dislike sm; i will admit that silence/forest has many good elements for a great episode#sure there are a couple moments that are a bit ooc but that's true of every dw writer at some point#the biggest thing hampering the story imo is the reliance on 'the doctor is the specialist boy' theme#which then leads into the final confrontation with the antagonist where they just give up b/c of his terrifying specialness#and it's. ok i am looking at this retroactively but sm consistently pulls this move and it's sort of fine if you have smaller enemies#but when you do a good job building up the terror and the power of your baddies (which he did do! i give him this; he's good at that!)#the idea that they would be so intimidated into giving up by a few vague threats from the doctor#starts to wear a little thin#so i'm choosing to hc that the doctor's reputation helped in that the vashta nerada realized he was capable of saving their forest#but made the decision with the threat of imminent self-destruction hanging over them#and not the extremely vague threats the doctor made

Hello. Me again.
I wanna do a bunch of comics as I replay the games so I won't answer everything XD but to answer a basic question;
You can play as a male or female Shepard, but Bioware intended the main character to be female. But because video games they were afraid dudebros wouldn't want to play a female lead so they just gave you a choice. Both are called "Shepard" because it's the last name. (Femshep's first name is Jane).
There is also character creation. So you can create a Shepard OC. but Shepard is one of the weirdest main characters I've ever seen, because as the years have gone on... instead of people leaning more into the self insert style of mass Effect, default Jane Shepard has become more and more popular. So these days most art and fanfic will write her as a default instead of a player/reader insert. it's fucking wild!
Also I am still in ME1 so she's still in uniform, but uh... that doesn't last.
........also yes I own the hoodie....
As for everything else... I selfishly don't want to spoil?? Even tho you can literally google it?? đ Because I wanna draw it because who boy.... do my babies have a storm coming....
I see! That is super cool, though--I like that female Shepard was intended to be the more canonical between the selectable characters. I wasn't 100% sure about it because I do remember seeing a mention or two about an option between male and female, but I've really only ever seen concept of female Shepard.
And I also think that it's super neat that Shepard's default is so popular! It's sort of a double-reverse of what you'd expect, and people are so baller for that, to be honest.
It sort of reminds me of how--when I play a Legend of Zelda game--I'll usually default to the names I can chose as being the canonical names. Link as Link, Epona as Epona, etc... same with the Pokemon games.
I think part of the reason for that might also be due to consistency. It seems like Mass Effect is a chronological series that takes place over the course of a period of time that features the same characters, so it'd make sense for the main character to remain the same over time.
You look at game series like Fallout, customization is much easier to get a hold of because each game (if I'm correct) features a new main character. It allows for more customization of the experience to fit around the character, but since Mass Effect is in that chronological story that follows the same or a similar cast, it's easier to have an agreed-upon default than it is to have a thousand or so different Shepherds, especially since they all end up sharing the same name (which takes away a part of that customization process).
It could also be that, as Shepard is the name given to the character, it feels ingenuine to a lot of people to have them deviate from their default--as if it's changing their identity. Already having the name implies that the character doesn't exist in a vacuum--they already existed before in the context of the game.
I! Am! Rambling! But I do find it super interesting to think about this!
#also if i do end up getting spoiled it'll either be likely by your hand#or my curiosity getting the better of me and spurring me to watch a playthrough of it on youtube lol#i hope my rambling about default shepherd and names made sense :D#it really is fascinating how games like pokemon with limited customization inspire people to self-insert themselves so much#while a game like mass effect that allows for character customization but solidifies the name keeps the default character#as the most popular interpretation#depending on the story of mass effect it could also be argued that it's similar to link#wherein the story is so intrinsically tied into the character itself that making the character someone else just feels odd#which also wouldn't be helped much by the inability to change their name :V#ALSO did i JUST realize that the name is spelt 'shepard' and not 'shepherd'? yes. did i just edit this post to reflect that? also yes#i am very smart indeed yes and very humble in admitting my mistakes that is true

Back at it again with asks for Waylen!! :D đ„ đȘ đ
And you shall receive!
đ„ - What was the first solid food that they tried? How did they like it? What's their favorite? What's their least favorite?
Obviously it was them coco pops with blue milk. It was one of Obi-Wan's favorites as a kid (mine too) and well apple did NOT fall far from the tree.
đȘ - Do they have a favorite toy? What is it? If it was a gift, who got it for them?
Ok real shit he picked this lil creature from his toy chest when he opened it for the first time and kept it on him I think so yeah. Creature lover.
đ - Do they like to have stories red to them at bedtime? How about at any other time? What's their favorite story?
It is literally the highlight of Waylen's day, cozying up by the fire on a cold tatooine evening with Mom and Dad. Their stories aren't quite the same as those other children typically hear, though he hears plenty of those too (particularly from mom)... but Dad's stories are a little different. He tells of great Jedi Knights- long gone now, who fight for good over evil. Who may yet save the galaxy once again someday. He always seems a little sad when he tells them, but he likes hearing those the most.
FANCHILD/CHILD F/O ASKS
#what he'll learn later is that so many of his dad's stories were true#idk I just love the thought of Obi-Wan consolidating the Jedi trauma by telling Waylen about them and finding good in them through his eyes#like FUCK yeah#don't worry tho Ma has some bangers too#ask games#Waylen Kenobi#mindless self ship indulgence#obi-gen#also yw for the photos lmao I just can't help it the fam is too cute
