#Regulus hates Dumbledore

Regulus's Perspective on Voldemort & Dumbledore

my favourite headcanon when writing Regulus Black war-time fanfiction is that he would see Dumbledore and Voldemort as the same kind of evil.

Unlearning his entire upbringing and view of the world (muggle-borns, purebloods, etc.) while his indoctrination continues through family, friends, classmates, and Voldemort himself is near impossible. No doubt, he is starting to learn that his people are wrong and that non-purebloods are—at least—human beings deserving of life.

BUT he isn't reformed when he starts working against Voldemort. At all. That deep-set prejudice takes time to unlearn - and he isn't exactly focusing on that.

So, here is how he experiences this war:

Voldemort has an idea about what is good and bad for wizarding society. He indoctrinates people. Makes himself their saviour, leader, Lord. He indoctrinates children and uses them to recruit other children at Hogwarts. He uses these children and their families as pawns in his war. He doesn't care whether they die or who they hold dear. They're his soldiers. He brands 16-year-olds with the Dark Mark. They are his to use. They will die for him.

Dumbledore has an idea about good and evil, too. He makes himself the saviour, the leader of the good side. He declares it as the good side. He establishes the Order of the Phoenix. He recruits his own students for the Order. He uses those students to recruit more. He uses these children and their families as pawns in his war. He doesn't care whether they die or who they hold dear. They're his soldiers. They are his to use. They will die for him.

Regulus sees the Voldemort side with himself, Evan and Barty. He sees it when Voldemort almost kills Kreacher.

He sees the Dumbledore side with James. He sees his brother and his lover and all their friends suddenly become part of a secret resistance fighting group before or shortly after leaving school.

They are two sides of the same coin for him. That's why Regulus did his own research about the Horcruxes and went to die alone in the cave rather than inform the Order about his theories and ask for help.

Oh, and don't start me about Snape !

And, 'JaMeS WaS jUsT A BulLy' We only sees him throught Snape's pov, aka, when he got 'bullies'c after he called Lily a mudblood.

And if James is a bully, doesn't that mean the Snape is one too ? No because :

-He made fun of Hermione for her teeth

-He bullies his students

-he exposed Remus when he had no reason for, since he is the one brewing the wolfsbane potion

-he hates and bullies the son of 'the love of his life' because Harry had the infortune of looking like his father, that Snape resents

-favoritism

-he was a death eater

-he is a racist

-he is a blood supremacis

-he is Neville worst fear, the boy who literally had his parents torturedby Bellatrix. Shouldn't she be his boggart ?? But noooo, it's our 'wonderful and misunderstood' Snape

-when he hugged Lily's body, while her son was crying his eyes out, being hurt, seeing his mother die, having blood on his forehead, and then leaving the house without even comforting or taking Harry to Saint-Mungos !!

-blamed James for bullying him, when he created Sectum Sempra, and was into dark magic !

-trying to make Harry expelled

If you could miraculously save one character from their canonical death in Harry Potter and have it make the biggest impact on the story, who do you think it would be?

I honestly think there's an argument for Regulus. He was the only person in the entire decade of the 1970s who knew about the existence of the horcruxes. That secret died with him and stayed dead for close to two decades.

Imagine if it had come out in 1979. Imagine how differently the Order would have operated if they understood their mission and the villain they were up against. Because they had no idea. Even Dumbledore didn't know. It took him 18 years to figure out what Regulus knew in 1979. If Regulus could have communicated it to someone (anyone - maybe Sirius, if not Dumbledore) it would have changed everything.

everyday that i wake up, i hate dumbledore more and more. “help is at hogwarts for anyone who asks” LIARRRR. not a single student was helped! dumbledore knew draco was getting the mark, knew he was just a kid who didn’t want it, and still did nothing. regulus black died because dumbledore was so bad at caring for the lives of children.

I always block the Manipulative Albus tag obviously but I also always want to block the Good Albus tag because I mean… isn’t that a given? That’s like having a Good Harry Potter tag… like, no shit. Fork found in kitchen.

Like yeah he made some tough decisions but his intentions were good. And, imo, if the information, skills and power were placed in anyone else’s hands - whether it be McGonagall or Kingsley or even Harry himself (as Inverse elucidates)- they would have struggled and failed to do better.

Also like… the Grindelwald stuff was literally a century ago when Dumbledore was practically a child. Why are we so generous towards Regulus Black who probably literally butchered muggles and muggleborns but we can’t forgive Albus who was lower-class, had an insanely difficult homelife and likely faced otherization and racism for having a Native American, muggleborn mother. I think if you can forgive anyone for being radicalised against muggles, you can forgive the teenage boy who eventually lost his mother, his father and his sister because of an anti-Wizard/Witch hate crime.

Ugh.

Most people don't bother to look into Albus' deeper history—and by that I mean the stuff we knew even before Pottermore and Fantastic Beasts and the outside interviews. All of the information about Albus' past is in Deathly Hallows, his race and social status and circumstances—all right there for people to read. But that cements Albus's status as a good but complex character so bashers ignore it or downplay it. And I in turn ignore them.

To your point about the 'good Albus' tag, I think you have to consider what you said first about the manipulative Albus tag. It is so ubiquitous. In just the six years or so since I got back into HP fanfic and fandom, the amount of dumb people who think Albus is manipulative/evil/shady has not decreased. It has quadrupled if anything. Even when using the tag that's supposed to be about Albus and Harry's positive relationship, there are at least 80 fics right now on AO3 that have that tag or similar. You have to block it all to stay sane.

But EVEN if you block the manipulative/evil/greater good tags, lots of other people will write fics about Albus with neither a good nor manipulative tag, but then their Albus Dumbledore will still be wrong. He will be manipulative and want to control everyone, will be untrustworthy for "some" reason not ever quite explained to the reader, will still be pining after Grindelwald and worshipping at the altar of the 'Greater Good' even after age 17. So unfortunately no, 'Albus is a good person' is still not a given in this fandom. The incorrect takes have so deeply permeated the meta discussions that it is very easy to find fics without any labels that honestly need the manipulative tag, even though the authors would probably argue you down about how "problematic" Albus is if you engaged them in dialogue.

(Example necessary probably, but just try to find a Harry/Hermione fic where Hermione doesn't randomly bash Dumbledore and act like she, a teenager or twenty-something, knows better than him, even though canon Hermione had the correct takes about Dumbledore the entire series. Check and I guarantee you that a good portion of them won't even tag manipulative Dumbledore, especially if it's a post-war fic and he's not alive. Incorrect takes abound. :'/)

I think the people who use the Good Albus tag know that water is wet just like you and I do. They know Albus is—well, really morally gray in many aspects, but a good person overall. But these authors are saying, "there has to be some counterbalance. People reading my fics should know that I am presenting the character as he is, and not as I presume him to be".

I personally haven't used the Good!Albus tag because my fics are meant to counter those many false-advertising fics out there that don't tag "I think Albus is as evil and/or controlling as Voldemort" but say that anyway when I try to read them.

As for Regulus Black... don't look at me lol. I think he's an intriguing character—or was before the 'marauders fandom' got their hands on him—but he's not moving any mountains in my fanverse just because his elf was threatened and his feelings got hurt. I'll stick to focusing on Albus.

Just thinking about how Remus was only accepted into Hogwarts probably because Dumbledore saw a weapon in him and used this to his advantage years later. I mean, how many werewolfs/mythical/dark creatures attended Hogwarts exactly? Cuz only one name comes to mind, and that name is not Greyback.

I don't really know if I've read this somewhere of if I just thought about it but here it goes.

Regulus lying in the water ready to accept death soon finds himself swimming back to the surface knowing his brother will think he died serving the dark lord.

Kretchur is gone.. was he under long enough for he to think he died?

That's not what's important, he needs to explain everything to Sirius, Remus, lily,James.... especially James.

As he got out he needed to know where they were. He couldn't go to Dumbledore not again after he asked him for help..

He was so deep in thought he didn't notice he was still wet, and no one around him seemed to notice as he walked in plan sight.

He went to his brother's flat, he could hear screaming and throwing... sounded like sirius heard some bad news, maybe one of his friends died in the war. For marlin sake he hopes that wasn't the case.

Being to frantic he didn't realize he went threw the door instead of opening it, as he entered he can see almost everything is destroyed... he followed the sounds of his brother to find Lupin is now calming sirius down, sirius was sobbing. Yet Regulus couldn't make out what was being said so he slowly approached, Lupin looked up from holding sirius staring in the direction regulus was but didn't say a thing, almost like he didn't see him.

" how could they" , "he was still in school" , " he did everything they asked" he heard threw sobs. He tried asking who he was talking about but found nothing came out but water.. still it didn't get a reaction from the 2 infront of him.

He tried touching them to get their attention, nothing.

He left not able to take the pretending he wasn't there. Even when Lupin clearly saw him walk in... or did he.

He managed to find the potters resistance, it was actually easy to find considering he was under the impression he needed a secret code to get to them.

As he arrives he could hear James crying. He rushed in to see a red face James being held by a clearly pregnant lily.

Kneeling infront of James holding his hand, he looked at lily for answers to who died, still nothing.

"Reggie... how... why..." were the only words Potter was able to say between sobs.

Was it him he was talking to or was he talking about him. His cold wet hands still holding on the the hands of the sobbing James.

Then he heard lily speak. " they could still find him, I know Reggie has been gone awhile b..." she was cut off as James stood. Regulus had fallen back by surprise. They couldn't see him could they?

"He's dead and you know it, they probably found out, they probably killed him themselves and covered it up" James horse voice spoke.

Regulus stood up, he was right there and they were talking about him , Regulus Black, as if he were dead. How could that be he was right there. " Jamie..." he finally got out " I'm right here, can't you see me."

Nothing

James continued to grow mad as he was still crying trying to accept the death of his best friends brother, his first love, his soul mate. Regulus tried everything he could to show himself.

The more he tried the more he realized he was like a ghost, no he is a ghost stuck at 17, he died in that cave, lily is pregnant probably about the burst any moment, she wasn't a few weeks ago.

Regulus started looking for the date, anything to know how long he was gone. He left the room the 2 were grieving to find out how long he was there.

May 30th, 1980

That's not right its supposed to be 1979 and it was definitely not may, was it?

He started spiraling, he went to everyone he knew to find someone who can see him. Even if that ment confronting dumbledore.

Dumbledore being his last option he went to hogwarts, school seemed empty, of course it was he was there at midnight. Looking everywhere he finally went to Dumbledore office.

There stood Dumbledore at his desk. He looks at the young black brother. Or at least in his direction regulus thought no one else has been able to see me so why could he.

" I see the rumor is true."

Was he talking to himself?

Regulus walked closer and slowly zigzagged to see if it was him the headmaster was watching.

It was, he could see him, but how?

" it seems Mr black you have died. A very wet death may I say" he said in a calm voice

How could he be so calm? A dead student is right infront of him. A dead student who begged him for help , who shouldn't even be here despite how desperate he was to be seen, to be heard.

"You..." Regulus started " you can see me?"

"Of course, it's not impossible to see the dead"

Regulus hated this, the only person who could see him was the one who wouldn't help. Even though he new this he still tried.

"Please protect them, James, sirius.."

Dumbledore moved around his desk " there's nothing I can do if something were to happen, the Potters are under a protection spell already"

" Move them, tell them Pettigrew..." he was cut off

" any information you give me won't be useful, it has no evidence, no reliable sources "

" I'm right here telling you!!, check his arm he has the mark!"

" so do you I'm afraid you can't be trusted my dear boy"

" I was a spy and you know that"

Dumbledore looks at his peninsula then back at the boy " for which side tho, you weren't necessarily fully helpful"

Regulus couldn't take it , he tried throwing things, hitting the man but yet again nothing happened. Dumbledore went over to the peninsula to remove the memory of their conversations right infront of him.

He tried to stop it but he seemed to have no effect on the world.

For awhile he kept trying to get threw to someone. But after awhile he kinda just watched. He watched his best friend pandora have a beautiful baby girl and Jamie have a boy who was the spinning image of him but of course with lily's eyes.

He'd notice for a little the young ones saw him so he'd play with them, he watched over them.

Then it happened, Pandora died, then the potters died. He couldn't do anything, he tried and felt to helpless.

He watched his brother get wrongfully accused, he watched as Pettigrew ran off. He watched as snape came and cry holding lily. He watched them take Harry away. What else could he do?

He noticed lily and James crossed over quickly, he didn't even get to see them.

That's when he realized, why was he stuck there? Why couldn't he cross over with the rest?

He went back to the cave to try and cross over. He layed in the water.

Ever so often he'd try again, he was bound to the water.

Then he thought he saw James and tried grabbing him. Asking him to help.

Why didn't he recognize him? Why wouldn't he help?

It was harry all grown up. And he, regulus black, had almost took him down with him.

So regulus accepted his fate to stay there forever in that cave to be alone because all he can do now is cause harm and pain to others and why would dumbledore ever help him after he let him die, let James Potter die, let Lily Evans die even with his warning.
