What’s really in our food?
Recently, many people have been checking the ingredient lists of our food to determine if it is ultra-processed. We are able to see strange sounding ingredients on the back, but what exactly do they do to our food?
Let’s examine a proclaimed ‘healthy’ food, a gluten free KIND bar. Its ingredients include;
tapioca syrup, produced from tapioca starch that is used as a thickener, sweetener, and stabiliser. It has been linked to causing fatty liver disease.
vegetable glycerin, a sugar alcohol that is a byproduct of the soap and biodiesel industry. It can lead to nausea and diarrhoea.
palm kernel oil, made by the bleaching, deodorising and neutralising of crude palm oil. It increases levels of bad cholesterol.
Keep in mind that these effects are shown when the ingredients are eaten in excess, however 60%-90% of the average American diet are full of these foods (that are ultra processed). Learn your ingredients!

Tips That Helped Me Lose 25 Lbs in 6 Months:
Cut out the sugary drinks. Buy yourself a large refillable water bottle, fill it up, & take it with you everywhere. If you don't like water or want something with more flavor, buy the crystal light packets (5 calories) or the Mio water flavoring (0 calories) & add them to your water. Diet Pop is also zero calories, & no it does not make you gain weight. Just obviously don't drink it all. 1-2 a day are perfectly fine.
Make coffee at home. If you're a starbucks, tim hortons, etc coffee girly, this one is for you. Buy the Sugar Free Torani flavoring syrup, mix it with some almond milk, pour it into your coffee, add a stevia packet. Honestly it tastes great & it's only like 15 calories, compared to a 200 calorie drink at starbucks or tim hortons.
Increase your amount of steps in a day. I aim for at least 10,000 steps a day. But you can start off lower than that! Start off with 5,000 and work your way up. You can get these steps in by doing anything you want. Your phone can track your steps for you so you don't even need to buy a step counter if you don't want to. Just keep your phone on you all day, most people do anyway.
Always keep a "healthy" snack on you. If you're on the go & you get a little hungry, this will help keep you from just stopping to grab fast food or buying a bag of chips.
Eating 60-80% healthy. Balance is key. Don't give up everything you love, otherwise you'll be miserable & just give up. We are aiming for a lifestyle change, not a quick fix diet. It is not realistic for you to NEVER eat the foods you love ever again. It's ok to enjoy life & still lose weight/maintain.
Don't focus on the way you look or the scale. Focus on how you feel. That's what is most important.
The 15 Minute Rule. If you don't feel like working out, tell yourself you're just going to do a 15 minute simple work out. After 15 minutes is up, if you want to stop, then stop. At least you got a little bit of movement in. But 95% of the time, you'll want to keep going. If you tell yourself you're going to do this long, hard work out, odds are you probably aren't going to go. It's overwhelming.

I really enjoyed your latest fic, sever the blight! But what really fascinates me are those nutrient cubes. What do you hc them being made out of? I remember in the fic someone mentioning them tasting fishy? And thinking about the r&d work that went into developing them is making my brain turn! Just Bruce developing a way to process, cook, and package the cubes, AS WELL AS running shelf life studies on them (I know he would, he's the type to run a 2+ year shelf life study, he would be that thorough). And the thought and care that went into making those cubes might be another way of Bruce showing that he cares for his children (in his weird way). If they get stuck/trapped somewhere for a long period of time, he's going to make sure he has a reliable, (somewhat) healthy, and safe food source for his kids until help comes.
Again, excellent fic!
Ahh thank you for asking about those! I think I wrote them that way half because I've been reading too much Star Wars fic and half because I'm a weightlifter about to go into another cut, so I've been thinking a lot about optimal nutrition.
My (admittedly non-expert) hc for the cubes was that they were made of complete proteins, omega 3's (hence the slightly fishy smell Clark notes) and some essential vitamins, while being as calorically dense and compact as possible. You need protein, calories, and fat for the fat-soluble vitamins, and you need it to be small, essentially.
Bruce's cubes kind of tell us several things about him:
He keeps more than a month's worth of calories in his belt at any time
He keeps those calories in a form that his children or other humans can consume
He knows the exact nutritional value of each cube and has a plan already reviewed to ration them, if needed
He knows how long he himself can go without the cubes before experiencing a go/no go point
He has, like you pointed out, tested these cubes to the point of perfection. They are optimized for both maximum output and minimal use of space.
The fact that the boys are used to the cubes, as Clark notes, means Bruce has fed them the cubes before. Either on missions, as snacks, or something else. Testing, perhaps?
He has, either intentionally or somewhat intentionally, designed the cubes to fulfill multiple nutritional needs. i.e., those of teens, growing children, adults, and adults with metahuman or enhanced abilities.
Bruce has likely experienced a time, or several times, when food has been scarce or when carrying optimal nutrition while fighting has been difficult.
You're exactly right -- there's always going to be a safe, bioavailable source of optimal nutrition for him and/or his kids within his belt at any given time. If he's alive, or they have his belt, they're safe for at least a few weeks.
It's a small cube, and his kids barely blink at it. But there's a whole world of care, service, and love wrapped up in that tiny little fishy protein cube.

19.07.24
11.6k steps
~1450kcal
Meal 1: 2 fried eggs w/ arugula & salsa + 1/2 grapefruit + GF toast w/ marmite-PB
matcha latte
Meal 2: baked chicken breast + toast w/ melted cheese slice + kale caesar salad w/ chickpeas, turkey bacon, cherry tomatoes, cucumber & pickled onions
Dessert: Greek yogurt brownie + yogurt bowl w/ kiwi, frozen raspberries, pumpkin seeds & crunchy PB
Lol was so bored, so I edited the heck out of my meals. Don't know if I can do this everyday cause it took me maybe 2hrs, but OMG it looks so pretty I want to!!!
Also, finally tried the viral 50kcal brownies, and it's so fudgeyyy I love it! 🥰 Mine came out at around 55kcals cause I added protein powder, but it's still low kcal, so I'm good with that.
Anyway, will update later. Might still walk a bit since it's still pretty early.

Which is the best foods for weight loss in united states ?
The best foods for weight loss in the United States combine nutritional value, portion control, and sustainable eating habits. Here are some attractive options:
Leafy Greens: Incorporate kale, spinach, and Swiss chard into your meals. They're low in calories but packed with essential vitamins, minerals, and fiber.
Lean Proteins: Opt for skinless poultry, lean cuts of beef or pork, tofu, and legumes. Protein helps you feel full and preserves muscle mass.
Fruits: Enjoy colorful fruits like berries, apples, and citrus. They're rich in antioxidants and fiber, making them satisfying and nutritious.
Whole Grains: Choose whole grains like quinoa, brown rice, and whole wheat bread. They're fiber-rich and provide lasting energy.
Nuts and Seeds: Almonds, walnuts, and chia seeds are excellent sources of healthy fats and protein. They also keep you feeling full longer.
Fish: Fatty fish like salmon and mackerel are high in omega-3 fatty acids, which support heart health and can aid in weight loss.
Greek Yogurt: It's protein-packed and can be a creamy, satisfying snack or breakfast option.
Vegetables: Broccoli, cauliflower, and Brussels sprouts are low in calories and high in fiber. They make great additions to meals.
Avocado: While calorie-dense, avocados provide healthy fats and fiber, helping control appetite.
Beans and Lentils: They're rich in protein and fiber, keeping you full and stabilizing blood sugar levels.
Water: Don't forget the importance of staying hydrated. Drinking water before meals can help control portion sizes.
Herbs and Spices: Flavor your dishes with herbs and spices instead of salt or high-calorie sauces.
Remember, the key to successful weight loss is not only about individual foods but also about overall dietary patterns and lifestyle choices. A balanced diet, portion control, regular physical activity, and consistency are essential for achieving and maintaining a healthy weight. Consult a healthcare professional or a registered dietitian for personalized guidance on your weight loss journey.
