So Batman: The Brave And The Bold #9 casually included the most emotionally devastating short I've ever seen and I'm just gonna leave a few panels here because I need you all to suffer with me. To make things clearer, Alfred narrates this whole story.

(The All New Batman: The Brave and The Bold #2): Is Bruce Wayne seeing himself reflected in Billy Batson? I think he is. Two orphans, lonely and lost in this world. Only one is still a kid, and the other is like 30. Still, I love this dynamic. I also love Billy's face in that last panel. He's so happy he cured Batman's depression, it's adorable.

So, I've talked a few times about how Batman NEEDS colors in his design to succeed as a character, but I've never really fully explained what I mean. Lemme try and explain again.
Bruce needs colors. His Batsuit, especially in cartoons, tends to be blueish in hue, with a yellow utility belt and maybe a yellow emblem. I feel like these are important colors necessary for Batman as a character to work. Batmans colors represent how dark and grim Gotham itself is, but how hope and light still exist within it. He's a man of the people, fighting to protect Gotham, and so he can not allow himself to be as dark as the city. If he lets himself be only doom and gloom, how can he properly protect people? This is why Batman with all black/grey suits doesn't work for me. Sure, he's cool and sleek in black, but without blue and yellow, how is any Gothamite supposed to see him as anything but a weird scary guy? The colors let people trust him. In the comics, it's super back and forth on Batmans colors pallet, but I'm a huge cartoon fan, so I only really focus on the animated versions.
Some of my favorite examples are as follows:
>The Batman 2004 (The long cape is also amazing, this is my favorite Batman cartoon)
Tumblr media
>Batman: The Brave And The Bold (The cartoon itself is so cute and goofy so the bright outfit is great)
Tumblr media
>Batman: The Animated Series (Early Seasons)

Batman movie written and shot like a horror movie. As we meet Bruce Wayne he’s his usual cheerful “Gotham’s most eligible bachelor” self, But he hears about a crime happening nearby and disappears into a nearby shadow. The film doesn’t even show him suiting up or leaving the room, he just steps into a shadow and is gone.
The batman himself is never fully in shot. It’s always just his eyes, his hand or his mouth. Characters don’t talk about the batman like a person, only as some supernatural creature, nobody’s EVER seen him in person. When he fights he doesn’t throw punches or throw batarangs, his grappling hook snags one crook and that crook is pulled into the shadows as their screams grow more faint. Each thug is picked off one by one.
the film focuses on the villain as the main character, who is some sort of mob boss like the penguin or a studious character like the riddler. Desperate to defeat this elusive specter that foils all their plans the villain slowly dedicates more and more of their life to finding the batman. They slowly drive themselves mad trying to defeat this impossible myth

I have been wanting to see a Damian and Tim team up for a long time. While we’ve had some panel team ups like in Nightwing and a comic book mini series called Robins, one was short lived and the other only had Tim kidnapped most of the time. The mini comic “Robin Season“ from Batman The Brave and the Bold is the Robin team up I’ve been waiting to see.
Tumblr media
We start with three teenage boys dressed as Robin being surrounded by a ring of fire. Tim and Damian come to their rescue before questioning them. As it turns out, these three kids were participating in an online challenge called “Bird Watching” lead by “Moth Milker” and there was a fourth person. However, after dressing up and appearing on the roof, the fire appeared and their friend was taken. They give a message sent to “the REAL Robin” to meet them at the first place they first fought or the fourth teenager will be “OUT OF THE NEST.” Neither Tim or Damian know who this villain is or the location they’re told to meet at.
Tumblr media
Damian is convinced that he must be the “REAL Robin” this “Moth Milker” is looking for since the kids are all his age. However, Tim isn’t convinced and rebukes Damian for trying to make this into a competition despite also being convinced it’s him due to the number of kids. This is not enough to convince Damian, who points out that villains never pay attention to how many variations Robins there have been.
Tumblr media
It’s around this point Tim begins noticing the material of the costumes. He takes off, while Damian follows, knowing Tim must’ve found something. Once there, Tim explains to Damian that the costumes the kids wore are made from a former villain called the Tailor who now makes costumes to anyone with money. Tim flexes his knowledge before he and Damian smash through the window of the Tailor.
Tumblr media
I have to say I really love this design of the two Robins overlooking Gotham. I especially love the design of Tim’s and Damian’s Robins. Their body portions, face shape, lips, nose, hair and clothing designs bring out their uniqueness.
Tumblr media
Damian is shorter with a rounder face, wider nose, full lips, darker skin that’s between white and brown and shorter hair. Tim has slightly longer and floppy hair with a narrow face, a longer but narrow nose, thin lips, taller and more body build. These are the kind of physical features I expect them to have. They’re both Robins, but they’re different with different uniforms and body portions.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
As Tim is questioning the Tailor, Damian notices the bodyguards and starts fighting them. Tim fights afterward, feeling embarrassed that he missed the bodyguards next to them. Damian pins the Tailor to the counter with the baterang and interrogates the name of his client that gave the costumes to the teens. This client paid extra to remain anonymous, but did provide an address. Tim stops Damian’s interrogation after getting the address, which given how far Damian will go when interrogating, it’s easy to see why.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tim and Damian appear at the address of the location, which is a brewery, both coming to the conclusion that neither of them have ever fought any villain in this location before. Just then, they hear a cry for help, running to find the hostage toward a large kettle. As they open it from the top, they realize that this is a trap. However, before they can avoid it, they both get webbed by the mysterious villain looking for a Robin, Killer Moth.
Tumblr media
Both Robins realize their error in focusing so heavily on showing up each other that they ran into the obvious trap. Both blame each other while Killer Moth stands dumbfounded that there are two Robins. It becomes clear that Killer Moth doesn’t know how to tell each Robin apart or is aware there have been different variations of Robin over the years.
Tumblr media
In the next part, both Robins begin to allow their error that should have been obvious to sink in. Damian running into the obvious trap and Tim completely missing the identity of Killer Moth with the name “Moth Milker.” The both of them were so focused on besting the other Robin that they missed critical information and a trap that could have been avoided. To add insult to injury, Killer Moth isn’t a worthy opponent worth his salt.
Tumblr media
Tim, realizing it couldn’t be either him or Damian, asks Killer Moth some questions to narrow down which Robin he’s looking for or if it might’ve been a past Robin. Killer Moth doesn’t remember, but recalls it was several years ago and that this “Robin” sucker-punched him with a pipe. Both Robins realize it was Jason’s Robin Killer Moth wanted revenge against. With his patience running thin, Killer Moth decides to fuck it and lock the two Robins in the kettle. This gives both Robins a moment of clarity.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Normally, I hate any Robin being the damsel in distress, unless it’s intentional or Jason, but this is important character development. Both Tim and Damian had allowed their egos to miss obvious signs of who the villain is, which Robin he’s was after, and ran into an obvious trap.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The three teenage boys resembled much closely with Jason’s or Dick’s Robin outfits (notice the shorts, fairy boots and gloves) and the name “Moth Milker” gives away who the villain is for anyone that can reach the Bat Computer. Had either Tim or Damian placed their focus on the mission, they could have found the identity of the villain, which Robin he was looking for and had taken him down without triggering any traps. However, because both Robins were too focused on proving each other be the better Robin, they needed a humbling reminder that they really have no business calling themselves the superior, let alone REAL Robin when the name, colors, uniform and mantle wasn’t originally theirs to begin with or was the first to have it be passed down to.
Tumblr media
After this moment of clarity, Tim mentions to Damian that his gauntlets include spring-loaded blades that need to be triggered by his fingers. While Tim uses the water to weaken the fibers of the cocoon, Damian uses his legs to kick Tim’s fingers to activate the blades. Tim then gets the idea to try to disabled the sprayer that’s about to flood and boil them like hot potatoes, but Damian thinks of a more direct way to create an exit. Damian climbs on Tim's shoulders to plant several bombs around the lid of the kettle, all the while recognizing the other’s strength.
Tumblr media
Once the bombs explode and pop the lid open, Killer Moth gets frustrated at seeing the two Robins escape. Tim and Damian lure Killer Moth into their own trap. This really shows the strength of Tim and Damian teaming up. Because they’ve had the same training, they know what the other is going to do and follow each other’s movements without needing to speak to each other. Sometimes, both have different ideas, but go for the one that is more direct or efficient.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Once trapping Killer Moth, Tim and Damian leave while complimenting each other’s tactics. Tim admits that sometimes his step-oriented plans overlook more simple solutions. Damian, meanwhile, recognizes that even step-oriented plans are better than attacking directly. It ends with the both of them enjoying their team up.
Tumblr media
All in all, this was a great team up mini story and every reason why Tim and Damian need more team up duo comics. I normally don’t make reviews of mini stories, but this one was great and I want this to spread. I want everyone talking about this. This is the one team up I want to see take off as its own comic book series. Maybe DC can give us more of this kind of team up.

Y’know, if they give Batman a Robin (Dick Grayson specifically for obvious reasons), they’ll never be able to have him become Nightwing without Superman existing within that universe because of where the name Nightwing comes from. Like yeah sure you could have a stupid fucking thing where he goes “ah yes I was Robin (wing) and I work in the evening times (night) therefore I shall be Nightwing” in which case you’ll hear collective boos from every since Grayson fan in the world, but I seriously wonder how Gunn and DC/WB plans to get away with Batman not being in the same universe as the rest of the new DCCU.
I’m also saying all of this on the assumption they plan to keep this new DCCU around, it could all be scrapped and redone Crisis style (I would murder if they do another CoIE) and we get right back to square one.

✨ Axel's Ultimate Animated Batman Watch Guide and Reviews
So, as many of you know, over the last five-ish months, I have made it my duty and responsibility to watch every single modern animated Batman series, and then to subsequently rate and review them, because most people do not have the patience (or levels of autism) that I do to force themselves through thirty years of mostly children's animation and don't know what to watch. So if you're just starting out in the Bat fandom or you're just looking for recommendations, you've come to the right place! Each series will be rated, described, and given some notes based off my own personal viewing experience along with a list of my favorite episodes. Additionally, I also formatted each series as its own image, both for easy reading and for easy saving to your device!

(The All New Batman: The Brave and The Bold #2): Aww. Billy, Freddy, Mary, tawky Tawny and Hoppy the Marvel Bunny are off celebrating Christmas in Gotham. I love that. They're so adorable. Although their fashion sense is some of the most archaic stuff i've ever seen. They look like extras from Annie or Oliver Twist or something. No offense, but I think the artist was just drawing what the stereotype of "orphan" looks like. Still, I love it. Who am I to judge these kids for their 1930s or 1800s style fashion? I'm just happy seeing them having a Merry Christmas. The same goes for Batman and Robin. I'm just happy this version of Batman actually has happy holidays. Most other Batmen don't seem the type to do this (especially not the dark ones).

How I’d introduce the Batfamily into the DCU
(This isn’t based on anything, this is my own imagination. I’m not up to date on all the DCU news)
1) The Brave and the Bold (2026)
* Direct follow-up to Superman (2025)
* Clark Kent and Lois Lane learn that kryptonite is being smuggled on the black market. In order to find the source, they follow a lead that takes them to Gotham City.
* Batman has already been established BUT he’s been retired for 3 years.
* The movie is a buddy cop centered on Clark pulling Bruce Wayne out of retirement since he needs help in finding the kryptonite smuggler. The thing is, Bruce is incredibly depressed and has lost his interest in crime-fighting when Clark first meets him. The reason why he is depressed is his character arc in the movie.
* Dynamic: Young, still kind of a rookie Superman working with a veteran, jaded Batman (but not DCEU levels of jaded, he’s more just cranky and sad like Worst Wolverine in Deadpool and Wolverine)
* The reason why Bruce quit being Batman is that his sidekick Robin - Jason Todd - was killed by Joker. Bruce also mentions that his first Robin, Dick Grayson, walked out on him and is now operating as Nightwing in Blüdhaven. There’s also Barbara Gordon aka Batgirl, who checks in on Bruce from time to time. She’s semi-retired from being Batgirl, mainly because she’s also dealing with Jason’s death.
* The kryptonite smuggler and the main villain of the movie turns out to be John Corben / Metallo. He gets beat by Supes and Bats and is sent to prison.
* By the end of the movie, thanks to Superman, Bruce has regained his spark and resumes being Batman full-time. He and Clark become close friends and Bruce gives Clark one of his Bat-Pagers/Bat-Phones if he ever needs his help in the future.
* Post-credit scene: Some kind of Justice League tease
2) Nightwing (2026)
* Nightwing solo movie. We follow Dick during one of his adventures in Bludhaven.
* Barbara Gordon is the deuteragonist.
* Tim Drake is the tritagonist. Tim isn’t Robin yet at this point in the timeline.
* Post-credits: Nightwing decides to return to Gotham in order to hunt down a vigilante known as “Red Hood”.
3) Batman: Under the Red Hood (2027)
* Takes place a few months after “The Brave and the Bold” and “Nightwing”.
* Batman has fully resumed active duty. He is joined by Tim, Batgirl and Nightwing. Nightwing says he’s only in Gotham for the Red Hood and that he’s uninterested in going back to being Robin. That being said, he tells Bruce that he should consider enlisting Tim Drake.
* Red Hood is hunting down the remnants of the Joker gang. He attacks one of their hideouts, knowing full well that the Joker gang members were meeting with Roman Sionis’ gang. Red Hood, viewing everyone inside as a legitimate target, just opens fire. Roman, aka Black Mask, becomes the primary villain of the movie since he wants revenge for what Red Hood did to his minions.
* Plot twist: Red Hood is revealed to be Jason Todd (whoa, bruh, betcha didn’t see that coming!)
* Black Mask puts a hit out on Red Hood as payback for his murdered minions. The Bat gang has to take down both Black Mask since he’s a crime lord who is out for blood and Red Hood since he’s a loose cannon serial killer.
* Black Mask is taken down by the Bat Gang. However, just as Bruce is telling Roman that he should be grateful that he caught him instead of Red Hood, Roman is shot by Jason Todd. Because of this, Jason becomes the primary villain for the last act of the movie.
* Finale is Batman vs. Red Hood. Bruce refuses to fight Jason and only reacts in self-defense. The fight eventually ends in a heart-to-heart in which Jason goes into a rant about how he’s still dealing with the trauma of the Joker incident. Bruce, despite feeling sorry for Jason, says he has to turn him in since he’s killed so many people. Jason says, “Sorry Bruce, prison’s not for me”, then throws a smoke grenade and makes his escape.
* Movie ends with Nightwing returning to Bludhaven (but on better terms with Bruce), Tim Drake becoming the new Robin, Barbara Gordon saying she’ll commit more time in being Batgirl, and Red Hood going after criminals in a different city.
* Post-credits: An imprisoned Joker learns his new therapist is Dr. Harleen Quinzel.
