I don't think I've ever seen anything that more perfectly replicates how psychosis feels. The latching onto/ascribing meaning to little details. The endless "searching..." as your brain tries to fit every real-life stimulus into its narrative of what's REALLY going on. The background preoccupation with real, ongoing emotional difficulty...

People often imagine psychotic delusions as being entirely dependent on hallucination, people seeing and talking to fully fleshed out, convincing looking characters. But delusion doesn't require hallucination at all. All it requires is the conviction that ordinary things are a puzzle to be solved, that there's meaning to be made... and that you're so close to understanding things that no one else knows.

THANK YOU, now I have an excuse to draw my silliest favorite character from literally my only happy Gravity Falls AU: Mimic!Stan.

The basic premise of the lore:

Mimics are different from shapeshifters! While the latter tend to be more fluid in shape- frequently changing appearance and form for brief moments- mimics usually stick to one disguise for a longer period of time. They do alter their shape, but they prefer to maintain a relatively consistent form for as long as they need until they need a new one.

Mimics are reality alterers. They are more powerful than shapeshifters, in a way, but their abilities are still considered relatively minor, compared to more powerful reality alterers.

This is because a mimic's main goal is to establish a long term food source to feed themselves, and in order to do that, they need a long term shape / identity (hence why they don't often shift forms). They will either build an entirely new identity, or take over an existing person's life in order to seamlessly infiltrate and artificially graft themselves into their surroundings. They mildly alter reality around them in order to solidify their mimicry.

For example, you could one day suddenly find yourself with a new uncle. He didn't exist yesterday, but every family photo in your house indicates that he has been present in your life since the beginning. Your memories now contain him, even though you've never met this man before. Everyone else around you also remember him, and recognize his face and voice, even though until today, he didn't even have an identity. It's like he's always been there, but he hasn't, really. That's what mimics do.

Stan is a mimic! He was considered the runt amongst the mimics in Gravity Falls back when the town was new. He was young (in mimic standards) and inexperienced, and expected to starve within a few months. His mimicry was fine, but his reality altering abilities were weak. He was unable to properly integrate himself into town, and kept failing.

ENTER STAGE STANFORD PINES. Born twin-less and former child prodigy, recently graduated from West Coast Tech and having finally escaped his stifling hometown, Ford is thrilled to have arrived in Gravity Falls! Hopefully he won't be as lonely in this new town as he spent his childhood, constantly feeling like he's missing a piece of himself. (*wink wink*)

Good news for Ford, he'll soon be getting an anomaly knocking right at his door, looking exactly like him and insisting that he's his twin brother. Yes, really! Check your photographs. What do you mean your photos are empty? Damnit, again?

(It was Stan. He failed. Again. He's lucky Ford is weird and sees this as a perfect research opportunity.)

So, I was familiar with the fact that Starfire of the Titans did some modelling when she first came to Earth, anglicizing her birth name Koriand'r into Kori Anders for the work.

But looking back at some of the stuff said about the hot new model on the scene at the time.... did people actually not realize she was an alien for a while?

Your guess is as good as mine as to what exactly was in the fucking water in San Francisco back in the day. Because you are correct. People from outlets as diverse as Vogue, Vanity Fair and Cosmopolitan looked at THIS.

(A Vogue cover of Starfire as "Kory Anders" I was able to find. Know I don't know which one, I don't read fashion magazines and she's on a lot of them) And said "yep, no need for further questioning or investigation here. That is a 110% real human woman". Like, guys. I know it's California. I know it's high fashion. But the woman is 6'4" in flats. Has bright green eyes with no pupils that glow in the dark. Her hair is wider than her torso, hangs down past her feet and ALSO glows at the ends. And her skin is BRIGHT SUNSET ORANGE.

This was AFTER Starfire had already become a well known and beloved public figure in San Francisco through her work with the Titans by the way! For months, maybe even close to a year people all over the world were under the impression that this woman was a human supermodel. She was a very POPULAR supermodel, the most popular new debut of her era by far she did shoots for just about ever magazine and brand under the sun but people from her agent on down were under the impression that she was a normal earth woman with a very "shocking" look. Do you know WHY this charade went on as long as it did? Because Starfire was truly, deeply under the impression no one on God's green Earth could possibly not have known. In a multi-million dollar game of "you never asked" she continued to cash the checks and take the gigs believing, entirely reasonably, that people were offering her these jobs knowing that she was also internationally famous superheroine Starfire. (As a note, she never intentionally Anglicized her name. 'Kory Anders' was the name a publicist came up with because 'Koriand'r' sounded 'too foreign') It wasn't until her teammates pointed out to her that no one seemed to be acknowledging that Kory Anders and Starfire were the same person that she made a point of bringing it up. At which point her agent and publicist acted like they had been entrusted with her secret identity, a secret identity Koriand'r had never cultivated in the first place! So that a whole lot of egg on the faces of every gossip reporter in the country (which is a silver lining lol). But ever since then she's continued her modelling work more or less uninterrupted. Coming from a highly militarized society and being born royalty, Koriand'r has said that fashion, the idea that people of any class, race or creed can choose to dress and express themselves how they please is one of the things she appreciates and loves the most about the Earth.

but let’s talk about them (without going into too many spoilers, so this will be about the thematics in their relationship). they are light and darkness. the ying and the yang. forever intertwined. one would not exist without the other, yet they cannot exist together. for madoka has too much love for every living thing and too little for herself. and homura has too much love for madoka it blinds her to everything and everyone else, and she struggles with deep self-hatred. madoka has forsaken her own existence for the world, and homura has forsaken the world she created for her. the show has a lot of religious imagery, and madoka is akin to a god; there’s a shot of homura, who grew up catholic, kneeling at the feet of a gigantic statue of madoka, praying, but her hands stain her clothes. because if madoka is god, then homura is lucifer - specifically, iblis, the muslim version of lucifer, who loved god so much he betrayed him, for he’d rather defy him than bow to his creation, humans. and homura would rather defy the sanctity of madoka’s wish, rather than obey its laws, for she will take madoka’s happiness in her hands, if she refuses to. in the movie, dolls representing homura’s inner machinations yell, “gott ist tot”, for homura’s god, madoka, dies in the movie, when homura remembers that madoka was human first, and godhood was something she reached to save everyone, against her best interest and happiness. their relationship is one of love, kindness, obsession, devotion, hope, faith, worship - they are the thesis and the antithesis, the beginning and the end, the alpha and omega, an unstoppable force and an immovable object. forever locked in a struggle, never fully embracing, for madoka will always sacrifice herself for the world, and homura will always doom the world and herself for madoka."

Hey there! I've been reading your blog for a little bit now, and I've been trying to think of questions to ask about the supers of my homestate (Texas!) and I realized there aren't all that many that come from here aside from Blue Beetle. I'm sure there's probably some that you'd know of from before my time if you wouldn't mind enlightening me lol

Well of course, spreading knowledge is the best part of doing what I do after all!

(The most recent Selfie on the Blue Beetle's Instagram page, which currently sits at about 12.92 million followers making him the 3rd most popular superhero run social media page ever) The most famous Texan hero, like you said is the 3rd Blue Beetle who operates out of El Paso on the state's extreme western edge. As I've said before his connection to the other Blue Beetles is unknown but he has been seen working with the second Blue Beetle during his recent return to activity.

He is of course beloved by the state's, the country's and the world's Latino community as most likely the most visible Spanish speaking superhero of all time. He's been a member of the Teen Titans through multiple runs in good standing and is considered, in general, a highly beloved member of the superhero community's next generation. Predictions that he will eventually grow into a position within the core Justice League are rampant and easily justified.

As for more obscure offerings...

(An image of El Diablo attacking gangster, The Amarillo Globe-News) As one can imagine, Texas was a hot spot during the Wild West era for gunslingers and masked law men. One of whom was the mysterious Lazarus Lane AKA El Diablo. Nobody knows for certain whether the motorcycle riding protector of the panhandle town Dos Rios (located about 65 miles south of Amarillo) is related to Lane or simply inspired by him but the Amarillo area has him to thank for much of its safety into the modern day.

Also obviously Latino and often seen speaking in fluent Spanish no truly superhuman abilities have ever been glimpsed aside from a near military grade custom motorcycle and a killer right hook. And last but not least, my favorite.

The second hero to call himself Air Wave works out of Dallas in the state's northeast. With the ability to transform himself into living electrical energy and radio waves he carries on proudly in the image of his predecessor. His "fan base" being what it is is limited, though he is often known as Dallas' favorite son. I've been told by those from the Southwest you can tell that he's not native to Texas and I've been told by other people that you can tell he was born or originally raised in Brooklyn, some things you never lose I guess. There are a few more unknown ones here or there but those three are the most active and the most effective that I've seen coming out of the Lone Star State at some point in the last century!
