Megan Thee Stallion has been granted a five-year restraining order against incarcerated rapper Tory Lanez, with an expiration date of Jan. 9, 2030.

Megan claims Lanez (real name Daystar Peterson) has been harassing her from behind bars as he serves a 10-year sentence stemming from a July 2020 incident where he shot at her feet. Judge Richard Bloom confirmed the order on Thursday, writing that Megan had “sustained burden of proof” to grant the motion.

Megan’s request for a restraining order described Lanez as a “violent and dangerous criminal” with an “established pattern of behavior [demonstrating] the reasons this civil harassment restraining order is necessary to protect Ms. Pete and her wellbeing.” Before this filing, Megan under an order that was only in effect from 2020 through 2023.

Megan Thee Stallion's "Cobra" is extremely vulnerable, and it's very brave of her to put struggles out into the world, especially when it comes to her suicidal ideation. Additionally, considering her personal life and struggles have played out on the world's stage, I admire her candor.

And for someone of Meg's status, it can be hard to admit to being depressed despite being what other people would describe as "blessed."

Very rarely in mainstream media do Black women get to be depressed. We are often encouraged to be and are often pigeonholed into being "strong."

Sometimes, we're hurt and angry, and in all honesty... depressed. And it's OK to admit that we're not OK.

However, I do admire how Meg's song implies that a snake sheds its skin and starts anew. Leave the past in the past. It's OK to admit that something hurt you, but you can put it behind you and move forward.

Also, let me point out: everyone has their own timeline for healing. Don't allow anyone to rush it. People process grief in various ways.
