This is why traditional talk therapy never worked for me...I talked about my past over and over again. I could analyze it in my sleep but I did not get any better...I just got more sophisticated in describing my past. I got more sucked into my "story" & all it did was keep me down. It wasn't until I LET GO of the past, forgave myself, & moved on, & started focusing my energy on THE PRESENT that I began to heal. And it wasn't until I started changing my thinking. My negative thought patterns that I had to learn to stop and replace with more positive messages.THIS is what helped change my life. This is true for ALL of us! You can relate more to others when someone has gone through something similar to you. That is one thing I agree with 12-Step programs...is the notion of "one addict/alcoholic helping another" works best. We tend to repeat the past because we look back and focus on it...our past mistakes and stories, and we regret them which tends to lead to depression in the present. The key is to STOP LOOKING BACK and LET GO of all that S**T!! It does nothing for you except weigh you down and keep you in misery and also keeps you feeling like a victim. We then identify with that story and think it's our "identity" and think if we let it go, who would we become?? Trust me...you won't disappear. Just your false self, which isn't serving you anymore anyway. Your true self will never be threatened or destroyed. I know so much about addiction and recovery that I could teach graduate level classes yet I have trouble applying it to my life so I have relapsed several times over the years. And spiritually I know how to inspire others and I have had many periods of enlightenment but fear creeps in and takes it all away. This is the worst and in my experience, unfortunately, it is very true. I have never truly been alone before. I went from relationship to relationship, repeating the same mistakes, over and over. It basically felt like Groundhogs Day...different day, same shit. I have finally taken the past year off...no dating at all because I realized what I was doing was NOT working. I was attracting the WRONG men, so it was time to work on MYSELF, to get MY act together, so I could attract something different. Hopefully, when I do decide to date again, things will be different somehow...I have changed so at least I am doing my part!
