i think the whole cringe is dead, radical sincerity, depth of genuine emotion, earnest effort, and unironic love thing that tumblr has going on the past few years has transformed my outlook on things and changed me for the better. but it does mean that now the people i know irl will give me strange looks for being too sappy or too poetic or too dedicated or too excited about about something because they're still stuck in their "well i only like this ironically" phase. guess that's their problem tho not mine <3

The thing with stories of any type is that everything is a translation. Sometimes literally, from the author's own head, from another language, from book to TV.

Then there's things like visual metaphors, props and fake backgrounds, set pieces, onomatopoeia, paragraphs of description that everyone will visualise slightly differently, animated contortions, unrealistic but helpful sound effects, camera angles to emphasise mood.

In fantasy or scifi settings you can't even assume they're speaking the language you do. That their culture is exactly what's shown and nothing more.

So much of what makes up good world building is shorthand, is making it work to the audience, is using something in the right context rather than digging up every detail that would make or break the illusion.

A character in a magical world, or even simply a non English speaking country, would not use the same curse words. Leather could be presumed to be cow but could just as easily be any number of bizarre creatures. Booking a hotel could require a very different system to one we're used to. Champagne, the word, wouldn't exist without France but it carries the meaning of expensive alcohol for celebrations and parties, the readers would understand what it means.

Tolkien did it with LOTR and it was a masterpiece. The prevalent themes of dark and light being mere shorthand for expansive good and evil, used to convey the messages it needed rather than entirely new words the readers wouldn't intuit? The characters not even going by their actual names? A whole entire conlang that never even gets mentioned in the actual story??? That's a man who has a grasp on how tightly interconnected the world, history and culture all reflect each other. I mean of course he did, it was his job, but what he did was nothing short of fantastical.

All this to say, I believe this is the root of all world building. Cohesive, well balanced, feasible, detailed-but-not-too-much, no words that'd break a reader's/viewer's immersion, expansive enough, realistic, resonant, coherent, believable. All of it, whether fantastical or realistic, stems from one thing.

its really funny when people are like look at all these dark types native to johto! and then list dark types that do not even live in johto.

like houndour, houndoom, sneasel, tyranitar, and murkrow were added to the international dex officially with many johto pokemon, HOWEVER they are not native to johto. theyre all native to kanto. literally not a single one lives in johto (IN THE WILD.) except for like. some sneasel and tyranitar that live in mt silver which is technically on the boarder but most of the entrances and areas where they live are closer to the kanto side or very difficult to access unless one comes from kanto.

Romance always seems better as like a vague concept than it does in practice. Like when I see it in practice it's like

... awkward? Kinda embarrassing? Idk??? Romance as a vague thought in my minds vs IRL romance is so different and strange. I have no problem with the vague concept of it existing but the moment that shit is in front of me in any form? eugh.

reading queer historicals does something to me because the characters are never totally safe but they find ways to be happy anyway. they find people they're safe around. they find ways of living in the world without attracting attention. ways to be happy that will let them exist even amidst a hostile society

and it's... i guess it's encouraging, sort of, when the world feels so hostile. to remember both that there has been progress, and also that we can find ways to be happy even when the world seems determined to make that as hard as possible. that it's possible to endure, and keep existing, and find joy, even when you can never be entirely safe

but i want to be safe. i don't want to have to fight to find my own joy. i don't want to have to build a future before i can live in it. i just want to feel safe

do you guys ever think about how kanto tore down the lavender town tower years ago to replace with a radio tower. i know all the pokemon graves were moved but it does haunt me a bit especially since the tower had a history of rumors of vengeful ghosts, something that HAS CONTINUED since they built the radio tower. i mean validity of these statements is up to debate it could just be people mad they had to move their pokemon fucking with the radio people but like.
