the only thought on the episode i will say tonight is this: i’m really disappointed that i’m supposed to be rooting for a set of bullies.
say what you will about the bad kids, they’ve been nasty this season, with a few standouts here and there—notably fabian, who has gone out of his way to make amends and friendships with people outside of the bad kids. but hearing the way they talk about other characters? the way adaine and kristen and gorgug were straight up bullying the rat grinders in a lot of situations? not saying the rat grinders weren’t being antagonistic in their own right, and i fully understand this is a comedy show of people sitting around a table making jokes and rolling dice. but compared to how much connection i had with the bad kids in say, season one or two, when they were going out of their way to be nice to people more often than they were being straight up rude and egging people on…
idk man. something about the bad kids this season isn’t sitting right with me anymore. and i’m sad.

My family is still staying in half of the church that wasn’t affected by the bombing because there is nowhere else to stay other than tents. They are limited to one small meal a day and one shower a week. They are sleeping on the floors, but no one can sleep since there is bombing everywhere around them. Even when there is no bombing, they can still hear the loud buzzing sound of the military planes above them, which would keep anyone who hears it awake. Along with everything, My grandma has diabetes and osteoporosis, so she can’t walk. thinking about all the verbal (and, at least once in the books, physical) abuse from regis that richard just reacted to, then apparently absorbed and moved on from. and then when he literally sets regis’s entire building on fire — on purpose, for revenge — he still expects regis to go “oh well, i’ll let bygones be bygones, lets get out of here and start over.” which is. not what happens. how conditioned to just…….. getting over abuse do you have to be to set your boss’s building on fire on purpose and then be surprised when he’s angry and vindictive about it

Okay, I’ve been sitting on this one for weeks. If you’d like to read my previous Phineas Thatch thoughts, here you go:
Let’s talk Imago.
This episode really encapsulates the “bureaucracy horror” aspect of Midst more than Sugarcoat or honestly even Inside did. The fact that Phineas incurred the greatest debt of his life as a small helpless child, before he was even officially a part of the system, breaks my fucking heart.
I thought Phineas’ single caenum was going to be due to some grievous mistake, some horrible sin that he had to make up for. Maybe he failed to save someone important to The Trust, something like that. But no.
He was an orphan, scared and alone with no one to guide him. And then, an angel descended from the heavens to give him a second chance.
Except actually: that “angel” was just following orders from people who never actually cared about him, but knew that saving a sweet-looking innocent child from The Delta would do amazing things for their numbers. Let us not forget that Phin comes from a place where the mutated victims of various tearrors go to die, and he looks relatively fine with no obvious mutations or physical differences. Was anyone else saved that day?
And yes, even if the motivations behind this mercy mission were soulless, it accomplished the objective good of saving Phineas. Except actually: they knew they were just pulling him out of the fire and into the frying pan. And they knew there was no way for Phineas to ever repay this kindness because HE SHOULDN’T FUCKING HAVE TO. It’s his LIFE.
How, in this world, does one make up for such a gift? After years of servitude, of saving other children, WHEN is it ever enough?? We know breaking even is possible, it has to be. What would’ve been the more valorous thing to do? Look up at your one chance of survival, stricken with loneliness, hunger, and fear, and say: “thank you very much for the offer, sir, but I’ve got it handled.”
And speaking of, think of how much valor was probably given to SPAHR for such a good deed! The thing that put Phineas in debt for the rest of his life probably did wonders for Jonas Spahr’s career and standard of living. I know he probably wasn’t thinking about that; he was also brainwashed into thinking that more Trustees means more universal good. I think Spahr is a good dude who genuinely did the right thing because it was the right thing, but would he even have thought to go to The Delta if his Concestor hadn’t brought him along? And then Spahr is the one who molded Phineas into the perfect Trustee wonder boy, ultimately breaking his spirit and forcing him to become someone he’s not, regardless of how intentional it was.
There is no other way that this could have gone for Phin, and he had no way of knowing what he was getting into. And now he’s trapped in this endless cycle of never being enough — never being free form a childhood too painful to remember because he was selfish enough to eat the carrot being dangled in front of his face. Really should’ve thought of that before ending up in that situation, huh? Oh, well, get your armor back on. Look on the goddamn bright side!
The only way out is to become in breach. Right back where you started. Holy shit, that’s terrifying.

It’s probably an inevitability of a franchise being this far reaching and this popular and this long lasting but it is so baffling how much of the wider star wars fanbase tries to “fix” star wars
#this is about the anti jedi movement and the satine criticism and the grey jedi fantasy and and and and and#star wars#I think the root of the issue here is that many people find George Lucas’s morality lesson at the heart of the story boring. and lash out#they see jedi who are supposed to be good and it bores them and they go ‘I will poke holes in that and hold them to unrealistic standards’#because their biggest crime is boring the audience who thinks they’re smarter than the fiction they intake#who cannot extend to the boring good guys the benefit of the doubt because they don’t match the sith or the empire’s rule of cool#which leads to justifying the sith order and the empire as Not As Bad As We’re Told Actually#which leads to misinterpretation and misrepresentation of the jedi#which leads to demonization and flattening of perfectly typical flawed characters and literary devices that promote nuance#I really think that’s what this is#I will never forget arguing with a friend a long time ago about the eu versus Lucas’ definition of the force. we argued for weeks#when in the end the argument boiled down to him saying ‘yeah but I think Lucas’s force is boring as shit’#and I was like ‘see. okay. why couldn’t we have acknowledged this way in the beginning instead of#you wasting precious time trying to convince me how to fix the jedi and why the empire is better than the republic#I think thinking of it all in this way helps me emotionally distance myself from all the discourse#nowadays when people watch star wars what they’re looking for is game of thrones#and they’re not seeing it#which means they have to try to make it that - both in their heads and loudly on the internet
