A little rant mainly about gen z

The rant is under the cut bc it's long. Btw there are some parts where I talk about my gen alpha siblings

I was born in gen z and one of the last years of it (luckily I am not gen alpha). When I was a child I didn't get a ipad with useless video content on it shoved in my face. I used to watch shows on the TV like Dora the Explorer, Team Umi Zoomi, Bubble Guppies, Little Einsteins, Veggietales, and some others I forgot. I didn't watch TikToks or even have YouTube until I was around 8 years old. I remember when I was in kindergarten my grandma would read me books, my dad would tell made up stories about princesses and adventures, my mom would take me places and we would have fun when i was with her. I've been seeing stuff where parents wouldn't help their kid's school work, not motoring what they are consuming on the internet and most kids now can barely READ. Maybe for some families it's hard to pay attention to their kids because of how much work they have or it's just a one parent household (like mine). But even though in my household, my dad works until 6pm and he is the main parental figure in my life. He still had time to help me with homework, read stories and watch movies with me. I'll hear stories about how kids can barely read these days, when I was first grade I remember getting an award for being the best reader (idk why I got it). I've been in an advanced ELA/English class since 5th grade and currently reading books in a college level with my classmates. When I was younger I wanted to be a soccer player, actor, detective and an artist. I've been hearing that kids want to be influencers and not wanting to go to college. Sure, I've had a time when I wanted to become a influencer but currently I actually want to go to college and I want to become a forensic scientist. Also I've heard people talking about kids being little bitches and parents not caring or going on the child's side. When I was younger I wasn't spanked or had any physical punishment but I had time out or getting something taken away and I still listened to my parents and still had moments where I was afraid of my parents. The difference I see for this is between myself and my younger siblings, my siblings are 8 and 11 years younger than me. They both were born after my mother got remarried, her way of discipline is spanking, yelling and taking things away from my siblings. The same is with my stepdad, even though they both have that way of discipline they still have their moments of gentleness as parents. My brother was born a few years before covid and today he does have a ipad but be barley used it. And if he wants it, he needs to help with chores or something like that. He has ADHD, sensory disorders and has a hard time with talking. He is such a smart kid, I taught him all of his colors in 2 days. He can read so well for his age even though he has those mental disorders. My younger sister is a bit more a part of the gen alpha sterotype. My mom has told me stories about how my sister will punch kids and teachers in her class (she is 2 though so she still has time for her mind to develop). But the difference with most parents is that my mom and I will make her stop hitting people and telling her "No. You don't hit people".

Winter of 2018 - Summer of 2021 TIME FILES WHEN YOU’RE IN YOUR 20s!!!!

OH BOY. It’s been three years (or more) since I updated this. “Time is a weird soup!” to quote a fave. I guess I quit tumblr around the time there was a purge of content and creators and a smack down on a lot of the fandom communities. Tumblr has always been something of a crapshow though so I’ve been more productive with my time than I was in some ways, but I’ve also found other ways to waste my time. *cough twitter/netflix/youtube/MTGArena cough*.

General Life Achievements since 2018 -JLPT N3 GET in 2019! -Blackbelt GET in 2018! -TESOL 120 Hour and BE 50 Hour Cert from online provider GET in 2021 -STUDENT LOAN BANISHED (Thank you grandparents) -Survived Apartment flooding in early 2020. -Mystery anxiety related illness and chronic pain in my left leg from early 2020 - Present. -A mythical 6th and 7th year on the JET Programme. -Started posting on Instagram a lot more about my wanderings around Matsuyama/Uwajima. Mainly old buildings and stray cats. @astormyknight -Surviving so far in Japan with old rona-chan.

2018 was rough. I was given an additional school in the first semester (March to July) as we had someone find a better job. I enjoyed it, but it was a bit of a rough go especially when I was transferred that August after three fantastic years at Tsubaki JHS and ES and only a semester there. I legit went through the five stages of grief - which I think is another reason I stopped blogging. I was given my current base school along with four other schools. Going from 2(3) to 5 schools was a bit of an adjustment. I still feel a bit spread out.

That said, I keep running into teachers and students who were at the Tsubaki’s. The teachers shuffle around every April, so it's always a lottery with which new faces are going to be old friends (or enemies…). A couple of kids moved and transferred into my current schools from Tsubaki too. So I have one kid I can say I've been teaching for 6 out of the 7 years I've been here!

One of the kids who was in JHS 3rd grade when I first got here (in 2015!) hangs out around one of my favorite cafes, so I got chatting with him recently. He's in his second year of nursing school - his class nearly broke me in the first year, it was really a trial by fire with those kids. I was 22 then, and he’s 20 now, so it was interesting chatting to him about that first year of teaching. His younger sister was one of my favorite students too, she was in the group of kids that graduated in the March of 2018, the year group that went through Tsubaki JHS with me - they’re newly minted University students now!

This Thursday morning when I was cycling in to work, a kid who was 2nd year JHS when I left (so 2nd or 3rd year JHS now) pulled up with their Mum in a van and got their mamachari out of the back to bike to school. The franticness of it all was hilarious. Their Mum legit sat on the horn until I pulled over. I was so happy to run into this kid, even at social distance and both of us late to work/school - because we both remembered each other and as they were going around the corners they were yelling each time they turned and humming the old elementary school directions chant and pelting me with questions about what I’ve been up to.

I've had so many students and schools now, that everything is kind of running into a blur. I remember flashes of kids faces and voices, random memories of in class or out of class shenanigans out of the blue. Also, I now, more than ever, have issues remembering kids' names, but I still know their faces (even with their masks), whose homeroom class they were in, who their friends were and which club they were in. I get random flashbacks to past conversations with them when I see them on the street or we run into each other. I feel bad because the first thing former students ask is ‘Do you remember my name?’ and I always have to be like, ‘Honestly, no, but I remember you did this on x day, x month in x classroom’.

Socially in 2018 -2019 - a few of our friends went home and things shook up a little. Our DnD group changed a bit - one of our players stepped into the role forever DM (THANK YOU RALPH). From memory the newbies were great - some of them just went home at the start of last month and it’s weird not seeing them around (JESS DO YOUR BEST!). I think we only have one or two people left from that rotation. There’s no 6th year ALTs, and only two 5th years.

Aug 2018 - Aug 2019 was the year of Hiura - my mountain school. Dang man, they were so cool. The students of the JHS and the ES combined barely hit 30, so each class was between 3-10 students depending on the grade. It was easier to get to know the kids, their abilities and their goals than it has been for me at other schools. I miss it so bad, being in nature once a week did my country-kid heart so good! The bugs! The frogs! The river! The mountain! The monkeys! The lizards! The dilapidated houses and hidden shrines!!!! The random crabs in the English room...I forgot that there was such a thing as freshwater crabs, and being right next to a river, the invasion wasn’t as out of place as I first thought...

The area is so picturesque and calming. Every week up there was a small adventure (after getting over my motion sickness from the bus ride up). The kids were constantly pranking either myself or the main English teacher. There was always some new weird bug or lizard in a tank to be educated about. There were chickens on the way to the JHS that used to escape from their cardboard box prisons to run riot on the gardens. There were old people to freak out with my youth and foreignness! The kids also got to do a lot of extra classes, sumiyakai (making charcoal the traditional way), planting and maintaining rice paddies, setting up vegetable gardens, raising fireflies, conserving a special breed of fire lily (only found in this particular mountain valley) and another rare flower, wilderness training ect.

I wish I could have stayed there a lot longer but SOMEONE (read...the BoE) decided that schools had to be shuffled again(thank goodness the dude who has it now was able to keep it from the 2021 shuffle, he's the best fit for the school). I had so many good memories from there, I wish I had been more consistent in writing it down. I do have a bunch of photos and videos from there though, so that's nice. The only thing I don’t miss is the bus trip up and down - not only was it motion sickness, there was a healthy dose of fear each ride as the driver brought us perilously close to the edge of the mountain drop…

2019 - 2020 was interesting. With the school I got given instead of the Hirua’s I was roped into more demonstration lessons which was a lot of pressure because I was also involved quite heavily with the JHS observation and training lessons too. They were somewhat rewarding, the third graders are now super smart 5th graders, but the teachers who need to embrace the new curriculum and ways of teaching really haven’t taken on anything from the lessons....

Outside of work as well, I was given the chance, thanks to an ALT buddy of mine, to join in with the local festival. It's been one of the biggest highlights of my time here, and I am gutted it’s been cancelled for the last two years, but I understand the reason…. I was able to travel to Okinawa too during that summer for an international Karate seminar with the Dojo I train with. I met the head of the style I currently practice and a bunch of people from around the world. I also got to see Shuri castle before it burned down. So that was a stroke of luck. One of the places I want to go when/if we get out of this pandemic is Okinawa. I want to see more of those Islands so bad. Just before the whole pandemic thing too - I managed to see the Rugby World Cup, a Canada vs NZ match, I even ran into Tana Umanga in Oita city!!!

2019 - 2020 was supposed to be my last year on JET, so I was frantically Job hunting. I went to the Career Fair in Osaka in early Feb/Late January 2020. I applied and got interviewed for a position in Sendai in early Jan 2020. In the end though - the Rona hit. We started hearing whispers of it around the end of 2019, then the cruise boats happened, and then Japan refused to cancel the Olympics...every holiday season there is a new wave of infections, my nurse friends in Tokyo are struggling....my teacher friends in more populous areas of Japan are struggling…

JET couldn't get new ALTs for 2020-2021, I took the extra year when it was eventually offered, as the one job I had managed to get a serious offer for was hesitating because with the rona setting in, things were uncertain. There was a lot of time spent adjusting to the new rules surrounding what we could do in class with the kids as well as textbook change. Schools shut on and off during the spring months.

I also got a reminder of my mortality mid May with an unrelated illness which is still smacking me around a bit - stress/age, it does things to the human body it has no right to. It's only been in the last three months I’ve been able to exercise like I used to, I’ve put on a bunch of weight I can't shrug off (one part medication, another part diet) My relationship with food needs to change, and I really need a kitchen that allows me for more than one pan meals. I also need to figure out what to do with a left leg that is in constant pain from the knee down and a heart that misses beats when stressed out (mentally and physically…).

My apartment also got flooded by the guy upstairs at one point, I spent most of late February/early March living in a hotel while my walls and floor got redone - I think this was one of the things that really stressed me out and kicked my anxiety right up a notch, it was right when things were getting REALLY bad with rona-chan in Hokkaido and schools were shutting down here as it was filtering into the prefecture and so Japan closed schools for the first time…

Classes in covid times have been weird. We’ve been wearing facemasks full time since the early stages of the pandemic (March 2020) - so I admit that I get a bit pissed off seeing both Americans and New Zealanders back home bitching about just having to start wearing them full time in public. I have asthma and have been suffering with the things on during the 30*C plus with high 90s humidity summers. Teachers were offered vaccines late July 2021, just days before the Olympics were open - and I finished my two shots in the middle of August. But the overall distribution and take up of the jab has been slow. As mentioned above, we can't play a lot of the games we used to play with kids in classes anymore, and a lot of the activities outlined in the textbook curriculum need to be adjusted too, so we’ve had to be creative. We use hand sanitizer a lot more too. One of the things I miss the most though, is eating lunch with the kids.

Socially from summer 2020 - now 2021 we played a lot of DnD and board games, both online and in person when we could. There were no new ALTs again for the 2021-2022 JET year, and those of us who were in 6th year were offered a 7th. Four out of six of us took it. As a whole we’re down from a peak of 38 ALTs for Junior High and Elementary school to 22 for now. We hopefully will get a new person at the end of September, and 4 more in November. Which will bring us to 27. This has led to ANOTHER round of school shuffles.

Summer vacation has been weird the last two years. With rona-chan, we haven’t really been able to travel. All the summer festivals (all the Autumn and Winter ones too!) have been cancelled, so the changing of seasons just feels, wrong. I dunno. There is so much we all miss from pre-rona-chan, and so much that doesn’t happen that makes this just feel like one long long unending year of sadness, coldness, raininess, unbearable heat and repeat. I’m tired. Time is going so fast, but so.dang.slow.

I lost my favorite school (AGAIN GDI!!!) and gained the school I taught a semester at in 2019....I had my first day there on Wednesday. Schools actually started back on September 1st so there was some drama as the BoE didn’t communicate fast enough about our school changes. We legit got told on the 27th of August (on a Friday) our schools were changing effective September 1st, but somehow some of our schools found out on the Monday 30th August. In July we were told we would be changing schools at the end of September, so.a lot of ALTs and schools were left short changed, not having opportunities to say goodbye to co-workers or students/having their planning for the semester more or less thrown out the window too. I love my job. I really dislike the way the BoE treats us, the Japanese assistant language teachers and our schools.

The new school I have is used to having an ALT there twice a week, who plans all the lessons and executes them. I’m at three elementary schools. I'm only at each once a week, I want to plan, but being that I miss an entire lesson in between visits, it's going to be difficult to do so. Not impossible, but being that I'm already doing it for two other schools, who are at two different places in the textbook ah…….. From what I have talked to my new supervisor about though, it sounds like the teachers have taken on more of the lesson planning and I'll be able to contribute ideas when I'm there. I just want to and wish I could do more without being confused all the time. (This is all usually done in my second language too, not in English so extra levels of confusion and miscommunication abound).

I feel like this at my JHS too a lot of the time. I want to contribute more, but even with constant communication with my main in school supervisor (who is a badass and pretty much on the same page about everything with me) I still feel about as useful as tits on a bull. Especially now that classes have been cancelled and or shortened, there's less time to do stuff. Any game or activity I plan is usually cut in favor of making up time in the textbook. When I'm in class, I'm back to being a tape recorder, the fun police and general nuisance.　

Also in the last week...my two of my schools were shut due to students testing positive for the rona. This is the second time my schools have had a scare in the last 8 months. And by shut, I mean the students were all at home, but the teachers all had to come into the office. Because why not I guess….. I mean, the cases increasing is really not unexpected with the amount of people who were travelling over obon and the increase of cases due to the Olympics/Japan being slow on vaccinating/delta being the dominant strain/Japan's leaders doing relatively little except asking shops and restaurants to limit people coming in at one time and closing before 8pm. I know my schools weren't the only one shut either - but still High Schools were having their sports days this week. I kept on seeing groups of kids hanging in the park after, so that was a little bit nerve wracking.

It's just frustrating - we’ve been on half days to “minimize the risk of infection” for kids and teachers, as if only being at school from 8am through to 1pm is going to reduce the risk. My schools have only just started testing out Microsoft teams and Zoom lesson equipment. Thankfully our school’s run in this time was contained real quick, the family was super good about informing us when they got their results back, and the fact they needed to be tested. The homeroom teacher and the students from the same class were the only ones tested, and they all came back clear, which was nice. But the information came back so SLOW.

I’m a little irritated because I found out on Wednesday night what was going on, and even if I am vaccinated, I am super worried that I will end up being the covid monkey due to being at different schools three days out of five. I think other than being worried that I will catch it myself and get real sick, my biggest fear is that I will be protected from bad symptoms from the vaccine, but still be able to pass it onto some of my more vulnerable friends and students. The whole thing is a mess.

Other than Covid and BoE drama, life is good. I’ve had a couple of other big changes - both fantastic and not so great, but yeah. I have my health (and health insurance!) for now. I have a job, for now. I have a sense of existential dread for the next 12 months, but we’ll see where we end up. Life post JET is going to be way less cushy and I am TERRIFIED. I mean, I have a BA in Eng/Ling and no idea what to do with it…..because I am NOT suited for academia.

TLDR: Love my job. Don’t like the system. What is life? Future scary.

i know this question sounds very weird and random, but do you guys care about how long a band has been active in making music? like, does it matter to you if the band is already two decades old and you fear that they'll break up sooner than you think due to the band's age? do you also care about the band members' ages?

this is gonna be a long one... but this is me with Ice Nine Kills; a band i recently just discovered. i'm the type of person that quietly whispers "i wish i was there when the band was just starting out" to himself but in INK's case, the band was formed literally two years before i was even BORN. Ice Nine Kills were formed in 2000 and started making music in 2002, so i genuinely had NO SINGLE CLUE what they were doing when my mom still changing my diapers. to put it into perspective, Spencer was 17 when Ice Nine Kills started making music in 2002, he's now 35 and will turn 36 in November.

now that i look back at the early 2010's, i wonder what what would've happened if i already discovered INK by then (Spencer's in his 20's). i guess being a kid at 5th grade with basic music tastes didn't help - i was only listening to Vocaloid and Vocaloid ALONE right before i discovered 5SOS in around 2013-2014... i wasn't even a fan of metal/metalcore that time because everyone around me claimed the songs as "the songs from the devil" or whatever stigma they kept sharing to others. i myself wasn't fond of it either because i preferred colorful and poppy music.

Welcome to Horrorwood: The Silver Scream 2 will be released next month and i'm excited for it... but somehow i wish i discovered them earlier in, say, 2017 or 2018 when The Silver Scream was newly released. i missed out on A LOT just by that album ALONE. heck, maybe even way back in 2013 when they covered Adele's "Someone Like You" would be nice... at least i can proudly tell others that i've been listening and loving the band for almost a decade like i do with 5SOS.

tho, considering Spencer's the only founding member left (most members from the 2000's are gone and only a few from 2010's stayed) and how they recently just joined Fearless Records, i'll make myself believe that the band just started having a steady uphill pace in the early 2010's (which is actually the case) and their name is just starting to be known by everyone. at least that's enough to diminish the fact that i'm as old as the band.

i'll encouter this same phase again with a new band that i'll discover, that's for sure; but honestly, all that matters here is that i love their music and i'll keep supporting them. the fear of them breaking up WILL be there, that's unavoidable, but as long as nothing terrible happens, i'm pretty sure the band will stay as is. if they're still active and is teasing/releasing new music/content, there's nothing to worry about. also, Spencer's almost in his 40's (good lord), but i'll be 23 years old and out of college before that happens and it'll already be 2025. who knows what'll happen before then? i hope Spencer still keeps Ice Nine Kills in his 40's tho 😂

hey, maybe someone out there is making the same note as i do but they're saying how they wish they discovered 5SOS earlier instead of discovering them just last year.

(i'm using this reasoning to prevent myself from sulking terribly because i didn't discover a band or an artist earlier haha). maybe someone in the NEAR FUTURE would write another similar note regarding a now-disbanded 5SOS from the year 2060's instead. who knows?

y'know, with what i said above, sometimes i wish i was born earlier. i can (or maybe can't) only imagine what's happening today if i was already, say, 24 years old or so.

anyways, i thought i'd vent with this note because it's been boggling my mind since this morning. i know i'm thinking about this too much but i just wanted to let this all out instead of letting this shitass of a brain ruin my mood day by day. i keep thinking about time a lot, don't i?

i don't even know why this thought popped up in my head in the first place. is it because most band members of the bands i love right now are in their 30's? is it because Spencer's almost in his 40's? i legitimately have no idea. the thought just popped up in my mind last night as i was watching the lyrics video for "Enjoy Your Slay" and it stayed there bugging me until now as i write this.

one thing's for sure tho, i'm very VERY thankful YouTube recommended me their MV for "SAVAGES" back at June (they somehow got the memo for my love of horror, blood, and gore). i now love Ice Nine Kills and i will keep listening to them even it's already 2030. yeah, i wish i discovered them sooner but hey, i'm here now! can't wait for Welcome to Horrorwood: The Silver Scream 2! i'm pretty sure they'll continue making those short movies to pick up where The Silver Scream 1 left off (which will span for over a year or two or even more i bet).

edit (08/09/21; 6:35 pm): i just looked it up and i learned that Dustin Bates from STARSET (the band that i love so much because they talk about astronomy and science in their songs) is only a year younger than Spencer Charnas from INK, so i guess this completely nullifies whatever the fuck i wrote in the paragraphs above but hey at least my brain has calmed down from that certain thought now. i can finally sleep in peace. four to five years is still a lengthy way to go and i hate myself for not thinking that earlier 😂

Day dreaming and worrying. So much worrying...

2. What makes your day better?

Knowing that I'm cared for and appreciated by someone who means a lot to me. And food 😅

3. What's the best thing that happened to you today?

One of the horses at our rescue followed me around the pasture the entire time I was out there and I'd be damned if I didn't melt! Mayhaps I really missed working on a farm 🤗

4. What fictional place would you like to go to?

5. Are you good at giving advice?

Mm yeah, sometimes. Other times I feel like my advice is complete shit lmao.

8. What musician inspired you the most?

I feel like Shawn Mendes really inspired me the most. I know there's a good handful of people that became famous from song covers on YouTube and all that, but I really like the way Shawn Mendes has stuck to him and his guitar for the most part, especially on tour. His voice is something relaxing and unique that I can get behind. And he's such a down to earth person, I'd love to meet him sometime and tell him he's doing amazing and how much he's helped me through his music!

10. What's your dream date?

Honestly? Roadtripping to the desert or anywhere that's far from light pollution and spending a night under the stars. Maybe our playlist is playing softly in the background and the campfire we started has burned out hours ago, while we lay on the trucks tailgate admiring the sky. Weirdly, my nose? Literally everyone always talks about my nose! I don't know why but it's kinda weird. And my eyes.

Back to my roots! I'd love to go to Poland, Hungary, and Wales. And Iceland or Norway just because the landscapes are so beautiful there and I just wanna see it with my own eyes!

To me, happiness is seeing someone else near and dear to your heart smiling and happy themselves. Even if it's not your doing. You're just happy to see them happy!

I think it all depends on the situation. If a young female is raped or wasn't educated properly about safe/protected sex, then I'd say she's more than free to go through with it. But of course, if you're gonna fool around yet know about protected sex, and not use a condom? I think that's your personal problem and you should experience what other mother's who have planned to have kids have gone through. But again, I personally think abortion depends on the situation and shouldn't be the easy way out.

Nah, I've got too much music to have a specific favorite album!

Year and a half ago.

As I said before, I don't really care if I marry or not. But if I did find someone I'd want to marry, generally speaking, around 30 would be a good age for me. I'd want to make sure I'm financially stable and happy where I am in my life before taking such a step like marriage.

First it was Figure skater, then I wanted to be an Equestrian. I stuck with the animal career cause I wanted to be a vet, and here I am in college for that exact reason!

I'm going to add to this for my reasoning to my statement; I know a lot of you may have been introduced to FNAF at a young age. 2nd grad, 3rd grade, 5th or 6th grade, that's fine! I'm not gonna judge you for it really.

My main argument is parents not fully knowing what the game is about, the things that are within the game that are not suitable for kids that age. Granted the creator never gave the game a rating so it's hard to really validate just how gory the game can get or the lore.

It doesn't help that the media and companies had gotten their hands on it and have cracked down on selling it to children as young as 5.

they made silly comics on the characters they stick in the kid's book section.

I had a 3rd grader show me a few things in the books and it's just the animatronics getting up to silly cartoon shenanigans. Not at all that's within the games. The movie is going based on the games so therefore it's NOT going to be silly bugs bunny shenanigans going on. They also have cute little plush toys or figures in the toy section in stores! I unfortunately don't have a picture of this because I don't go in that section often but I'm sure y'all have seen it.

Back on the game rating. I looked up the recommended appropriate age to be playing the FNAF games. Most say 12+, I've heard of kids whose been unsupervised, and seen them at school, playing the FNAF games on their Chromebooks. All I can tell them while they're at school is they shouldn't be playing games like that and then redirect them on their homework. I can not control what they do at home because I'm not their parent and most of the time the parents don't even know they're playing it.

and my last point, My mother's boyfriend has a 5-year-old kid. We can't really parent his kid because that's his kid but he does get upset when his 5-year-old is talking about things like dying or about games like FNAF.

His fault for giving her the remote to her roku and not putting a parental lock on her youtube but, it wouldn't do much since people are making youtube animations of FNAF for kids her age to watch.

This isn't the exact youtube creator she watches but it's close enough to videos of the series geared toward children.

I'm not gonna judge them for their creative content, but I feel that it's misleading kids on what the horror game franchise that FNAF is about, even getting them to want to play it because in their minds they get to play cute little mini-games with the fun animatronics.

Correct me if I'm wrong, and I may be wrong, but that's why I don't want kids younger than 12 getting into the FNAF series. I know that's how companies work to get people into the series and want to buy the content but it's different when the kids only think it's a fun childrens game and not a horror game series meant to scare them.

I don't know who needs to read this but please warn parents to do their research before letting them see the upcoming fnaf movie. Fnaf isn't suitable for kids in the first place and the movie will be wildly inappropriate for them.

I'm an avid horror fanatic and I love scary movies based on Games like fnaf but we don't want another slender man issue because parents aren't aware of the things their kids watch.

Mostly because the creators shouldn't have to deal with your Karen ass all because your kid got scared or you didn't know what the movie in question is about.

They're gonna go all out with this movie, from what I heard, Children will be brutally murdered and shoved in animatronic suits, Karen. Don't like the story don't take your kid to it. No matter how much they beg.

If I see my 3rd-grade students at the theatre that's on you, not me.

All in all, Teach your kid the difference between fiction and reality as well as be aware of what they're doing online. You may find that the game of silly animal animatronics isn't as innocent as they're letting on.

Now if you're a full-grown adult and teenager seeing the movie I could care less, You know what's up. But for those who are 10 and younger, y'all need to not go see that movie unless your parents know what's in it.

Going in blind isn't fun and sometimes 'better asking for forgiveness than permission' isn't always the right way to go.

my point may be invalid but whatever. Just don't take your 7 year olds to see the movie, that's all I have to say.

I Just Finished a Course Studying Rock Music, and Now I am Disappointed in Myself...

When I was younger, I remember using my older cousin’s hand-me-down portable CD player. I went to an outdoor program school at the time and did not consume many forms of media. I never really watched TV, played video games, or watched YouTube until I was a young teen. One thing I did have was my portable CD player. I put all my favorite stickers on it and played Hilary Duff’s Metamorphosis (which for some reason I thought was Brittany Spears for the longest time) until the track wore out.

When I got into 5th or 6th grade I was given my first large-storage music device: a blue iPod Nano - the one with the bigger screen and the weird wheel for navigation. I loved that thing so much and used it relentlessly; to the point where I could select my favorite songs or playlists without looking at it, just by counting the number of times my thumb went around the wheel. I had the wheel patterns burned into my head like other kids had video game combos in theirs’. I would give it to my friends to take home sometimes so they could download their favorite songs onto it for me. Even when I got the upgraded iPod Nano as a gift- with the clip on the back and a touch screen- I still used my favorite blue one.

It was when my step-father downloaded some of his old rock artists onto it that I really found my love for music. While I started with Eric Clapton and the Beatles, I soon developed my own preference for 90′s Alt and Grunge Rock, mixed with some Classic and Progressive Rock every now and then.

So now I am in college and I just finished a class about the history of rock music. We learned about rock’s origins in black communities and how it helped to communicate the frustrations of the oppressed, how it was adopted by young people and taken over by national radio stations. I realized while reading through our textbook that a lot of the diversity that created my favorite genre is no longer heavily represented in it.

I now reflect on the stereotypes of rock music and notice how exclusive they are to many minorities. Classic rock is constantly being gatekept by white dads. Pop-Punk seems to be a majority white. Even my beloved 90′s Alt Rock is not only predominantly white, but devoid of many female singers. Modern rock expresses the frustrations of a very limited group of people, and as time goes on I have found rock to become much more aesthetic that I feel it was meant to be.

I naively thought that the 90′s bands I love were just in it for the music and were not selling themselves, so whoever became famous must have achieved that based off of talent alone. However, it would be stupid of me after learning of rock’s origins to continue to believe this. There is no explanation for the whitewashing of rock except for the racism that has persisted since the genre’s creation. I could very easily choose to continue listening to music the way I always have, but the fact that I have the option to dismiss racism in my favorite genre is a slap in the face to the musicians who have to fight against the prejudice I could so easily ignore.

I would like to not only expand myself in my music taste, but also give a listen to some bands that have maybe found it hard to gain notoriety in the rock world. I want to put effort into listening to artists who have different experiences.

100 Day Practice Challenge: Day 1 (10/4/2017)

So, I was inspired by the likes of @flutejesus and others to partake in a challenge that's been floating around the music side of Tumblr lately. I decided to give it a shot!

(Real quick, sorry for any typos in any of these posts. On my phone and I hate touch screen. Also, no pics for now. I look like utter shit)

Musical Background: Music has ALWAYS been a big part of my life. I started playing the piano when I was five. I've been playing the flute since 2004. I've been working on my singing (very shy about that). I'm working on a novel I'd love to make music for (or at the very least, do music covers for). Playing the flute is one of my favorite things in the world. I had dreams of playing for the DSO (Detroit Symphony Orchestra) when I was younger. Those dreams got shot (thanks to my mom) but music will always hold a special place in my heart.

I was third chair from 5th-9th grade. I held the first chair spot for the rest of high school, and was even named one of the best flute players in my school. Fun fact: I'm not that great w/ sheet music. I use a method I often call "Playing by Ear". Because of this, I know a lot of songs from different generas (sp?). I used to street perfom using this skill, and made good money doing so. Sadly, my mother stole over half that money, and a cop kicked me off the street and threatened me w/ a $150 fine for no reason. More on that later.

Due to adulting, I usually don't have time to practice. However, I hope to change that over the next 100 Days. Every day, I plan to practice for about 2hrs or so, then post things I learned/re-learned about my playing style as the days pass.

So, withouf further ado, here is Day 1's report!

Day 1:

~my weakness is C# and F# majors. The other scales came back to me naturally, but I had MAJOR TREBLE with these two! 😂

~i can still articulate and crescendo/decrescendo like a BOSS

~*cracks fingers* ow

~*firat time applying chapstick in a while* ohhh so thAT'S WHAT CHAPSTICK FEELS LIKE

~gave myself feels; played a song from a deleted scene from one of the Harry Potter movies. it's called In Noctem. It's kinda sad, and it reminded me of the tragedy that recently occured in Las Vegas.

~have any of you ever heard of Ilvean Polka? Look up "leek spinning hatsume miku" on YouTube and find a good version of the song. It's a fun song to play, great fingering exercise, good breath control practice, excellent articulation practice, and a great warm-up. Again, no sheet music, sadly

~*takes a break to add a lot of songs onto phone*

~*sees the amount of tine it will take; immediately regrets this desicion*

~*decides to carry on anyways*

~i had a bunch of anime music stuck in my head. Mostly themes, including bits of the Food Wars!, School Rumble, and Attack on Titan themes.

~Pokemon nostalgia was next. Songs from Red and Silver were re-expored, with small bits of stumble. I can still nail the battle theme vs Champion Lance from Pokemon Silver

~back in the day, one of my specailties was octive-switching. I was really good at switching octives on a dime. It can be difficult when first learning a piece, but as I became more familiar with it (and the fingerings), I could do it with little to no problem. Breath control is the key, here. And squeaking has always been a difficult thing for me. Tried it out with a cute Japanese song that I don't know the name of (I got it back in 2009). Was rusty, but worked really well.

~Start time: 8:45pm. Ending time: 10:15pm. Not bad. Would like to practice longer, but ended it slightly early to take care of the digital music issue.

So yeah, aside for some techinal difficulties, this turned out to be a nice, relaxed session. A nice way to kick off the challenge. I spent a little more time on the scales than mentioned, and pinpointed the ones I wanted to improve on. Despite the lack of "music aid", a lot of forgotten music came back to my mind...and I even managed to learn a new song in the process! When I do get everything straight, I'll post the songs I played/practiced that day (hopefully with links where you can listen along, if you'd like), as well as other enlightenment/amusing shit I encounter during these times.

One day down, 99 more to go!
