“Waiting Magritte” - by @theusualdesigners. An art piece inspired by the man who probably knew “random” better than anyone else, Rene Magritte. 🎩🍎☁️
An interesting note about #Magritte is that his professional career actually started in the #advertising industry! Prior to getting his first full-time contract as a painter, Magritte was originally a #designer of #advertisements and #posters for several years. When the art gallery & thus, his FT contract closed in 1930, he returned to his ad roots, and even started his own agency. At one point, he began utilizing his talent to forge copies of paintings from artists such as #Picasso & #Braques (to make a little extra $$ on the side). Eventually, he even learned how to make & sell forged bank notes as well!
Quite the tricky character he was!! Haha!🧐

Surrealism is a curious art. Interestingly enough, it’s fairly young in age when compared to the centuries-old classical styles and earlier forms of art.
This was a cultural shift, a movement that began around 1920, and actually, was the by-product which resulted from the side effects of WWI. Its epicenter of origin is based in Paris, where the concept was used to portray people, objects or ideas by way of the odd & unusual.
Some of the founding elements in surrealist art were largely influenced by Sigmund Freud and his theories regarding dream-analysis and the subconscious.
Today, we see this style of communication and rule of thought not only in art, but also in the application of business, and its expansion across a multitude of industries including technology, design & the strategic components of marketing and consumer behavior.
These visual renderings come from an exhibit called “The Unknown”, created by Andrea Torres Balaguer, a young Spanish artist whose purpose was to peak the curiosity of her viewers, allowing free access to an open-ended interpretation.

⚡The Secret is in the Details. ⚙ #WorkVibes 🏍#JamesBond #Design
Channeling some #007😎 this week, starting with this disassembled design by Ben Sandler - a creative interpretation on the future of 3D printing.
Inventiveness & Creativity: Two critical elements of #strategy & the vital components of #marketing. It’s much more FUN to think of marketing like a James Bond novel. In real life, Ian Fleming, the author & originator of #Agent007, was actually a true, high-level intelligence officer himself. Recruited by the #RoyalNavy in 1939, Fleming worked in the Naval Intelligence Division during #WWII, under the codename “17F”.
He oversaw the #operations for several undercover missions & integral in the formation of intelligence units: No. 30 Commando, (30 Assault Unit) & Target Force (T-Force). Besides #Bond, most of Fleming’s characters & their respective missions were based on real-life scenarios, people he knew, or fellow liaisons.
Also in the military was Ian’s father, Valentine Fleming, who became a Major in the Queen’s Own during WWI, and was killed in action by German Forces in 1917. Interestingly, it was Valentine’s good friend Winston Churchill, who after hearing the news of his death, took it upon himself to write a formal obituary, which was published in The Times.
But most of all, it was Fleming’s intel operations, the fine minute details, which make his novels so compelling...not to mention, a great reference on the idea of marketing & how to utilize #Inventiveness & #Creativity in our own strategies.

Likely Scenario A: You just bought a brand new chair. Likely Scenario B: You just had one perfectly reupholstered. INEVITABLE Scenario C: ‘Fido’ finds the chair & decides this is going to be his new perch...
Actually, this portrait is the professional handiwork of #PaulCroes & #IngeNelis, @paulcroesphotography the duo at Behind Eyes studio, who bring fine #photography to the animal world & whose patience must exceed all bounds. Working through long hours & countless doggie treats, they’ll do whatever it takes in order to get the perfect shots.
Amazingly, animals have a profound effect on our psyche. Pets are basically like family members these days, and the presence of animals & our relationship to them can be seen all throughout #history. Today, #marketers use them as #subliminal ploys in #advertising, and #TVshows often work animals or pets into the script as a way to boost ratings. The reason is simply because it’s how humans are #wired. Our attraction to animals is part of our #DNA. By nature, the visual aspect triggers an automatic/emotional response in our brain making the impression more meaningful, its message more appealing & overall, is more likely to be stored in our long-term memory drawer instead of the recycle bin.
On the topic of #portraits - If you think a photo-op session takes forever, just imagine if you were an artist back in the day? We’ve gathered some #historical #paintings of various individuals who also wanted to immortalize their beloved animals in these #FineArt portrayals. Take a look! 🙈🐶🐱🐕

Right?!? 🤓🎓 Haha!! Good ‘ole Times New Roman...In a way, it’s a little sad that we treat this poor font like an aromatic senior citizen with bladder control issues.
Especially, given its celebrity status in the world of publishing. Although TNR is not considered “modern” today, it was a Pretty.BIG.DEAL. back in its heyday. It was “THE” font of the 20th century!
Commissioned by the British Times, this new innovation entered the public scene in 1932. It turned the tide on “pleasurable reading” and up until that point, no newspaper had ever created their own custom font. The development was a painstakingly exhaustive process which started a year earlier. They canned at least, if not more than 5,000 matrices before landing on a final product!
💡 An Interesting FUN FACT about TNR: 💡 • The equipment used to create the actual typeface for The Times, came from two different printing manufacturers: Linotype & Monotype. Each company created individual metal punches used by the newspaper, thus giving each corporation their own “version” of the new font. • As a result, Linotype licensed their version “Times Roman” to Xerox, Adobe & APPLE, whereas Monotype (the primary lead) licensed their version “Times New Roman” to MICROSOFT! This is why you might notice the name difference depending on whether you use a Mac or a PC.💻🍎
The Times New Roman was a smashing hit. It become the primary typeface in our textbooks (as we all remember), our software, and in 2004, became the official font used by the US Dept. of State for all diplomatic documents.
Quite impressive for the font we like to put in the geriatric corner of the nursing home... 🎓📚

SAY WHAT⁉️ - Who You Talkin’ TO: The 🗞 on the WHOs & WHATs
Seriously…If you are ever in search of the odd & unusual, go to #NYC. Find an outdoor cade, get a street side table, order a cup of coffee & just park it there for an afternoon. You’ll be amazed.
We decided to put a little spin on a phrase heard frequently in NY 📣 - “It’s not What you know, it’s Who you know” - 📣
In business, of course, having an A-list of “who’s-who” in your back pocket is always a good thing. On the flip-side, you still have the “what you know” card, which can be of great benefit if you know how to use it.
In reality, any business intending to promote goods or services to a public audience, not only must know “Who” they’re talking to, but more importantly, WHAT makes that audience TICK. ⏰ This is where we marketers or consumer researchers often come into play. It’s not a 1-2-3-GO process, but if you’re smart about it, this digging around can give you some really interesting insights that are specifically “unique” to that audience.
People LOVE to talk about themselves, so naturally, they will be curious to see what you have to say about them as well. This is where you bust out the “what you know” card. Use those #insights to put the spotlight on your audience by highlighting things that peak their curiosity - TELL THEM SOMETHING THEY DON’T ALREADY KNOW about themselves, or their environment.
We did a little digging to see what makes NYC tick. And we found out some CrAaaZzY Stuff !!!

❓ The *Irony of INSPIRATION ⭐🌎
Inspirations drive us. They move us forward, continually shaping and influencing our perspectives on life, and how we interpret the world around us. Perhaps an interesting thought… Sometimes, when you look further, these inspirations uncover a fascinating irony. For example ~ Vincent Van Gogh’s🎇 “Starry Night”
We know of him, we’re inspired by him, we have even incorporated similar style in our own designs. But ask yourself, how often do we see the irony in the inspirations provided for us?
A true, but widely understated sentiment, Van Gogh was a deeply troubled young man. He couldn’t keep a job, he was severely unstable mentally, he had significant trouble maintaining relationships, he drank heavily, smoked heavily and moved constantly due to conflicts with either the landlords, or the neighbors who detested him. Most likely, it is safe to say that throughout his 37-yr. lifespan, Van Gogh probably made more landings than the British Airways. The poor man was utterly lonely, full of despair and sadly decided to end his sorrows by committing suicide. It’s a grim story indeed.
*BUT* during his life, Van Gogh produced 2100+ pieces of art, most of them during his latter years - an ASTOUNDING number for such a short time... and from someone as distraught as he.
In “Starry Night”, the prime irony here is when you realize the true context behind it. We view this painting from our perspective - a beautiful distant depiction of the evening sky above a small chapel in Saint-Remy. *However* In reality, the reason Van Gogh chose this setting is because it was one of the ONLY things he could capture through the barred windows of an insane asylum in which he resided.
🤔 To think... one of the world’s greatest influencers in the history of modern art looked out his window, from a little room, of an insane asylum, and this is was what he saw. What a crazy concept on the idea of perspective.
And so it goes... The irony continues, and thus, our inspirations derive. But one thing is for sure, although the roots of some inspirations may be unpleasant ones, we have the opportunity to transform them into beautiful, meaningful, uplifting and positive celebrations of life.✨💖

SAY WHAT?? 😲 - THE CURIOUS BITS of NYC 💡
This is Part 2 (the fun part) of our post on the WHOs & WHATs of knowing your audience. Recently, we did a little research into one of our favorite audiences, #NewYorkCity. We uncovered some doozies!!
🍎 • The island of Manhattan, originally colonized by the Dutch, who purchased this roughly 300 sq. mile patch of land for approx. $1000 in today’s money. It is now home to more billionaires than any other city in the world and was the 1st capital of the United States.
🍎 • Ironically, NYC’s nickname, “The Big Apple” comes from the south! It was a reference coined in the #1920s by a New York newspaper reporter who covered horse-racing (an extremely popular sport at the time). Only by sheer coincidence, while on location at a race in #NewOrleans, he overheard some of the Louisiana stablehands mention they were planning a trip “to visit the ‘Big Apple’.” This struck the reporter who in turn, starting using the nickname in his news column. In the #1930s, during the huge jazz craze (which btw, is also rooted from the south), the term was widely used by NYC’s popular jazz musicians who promoted “The Big Apple” as being #1 spot for the “big-time” music venues.
🍎 • If, by some miracle, you find yourself in #TimesSquare on a QUIET day, take stroll down the sidewalk between 45th & 46th St. The sound coming from the subway grates is ACTUALLY an art sound #installation by #MaxNeuhaus which was placed in the underground station back in 1977!
🍎 • NYC has a deeply rooted #American #heritage & was a primary meeting place for our #FoundingFathers. The largest battle of the American Revolution was fought where #Brooklyn stands today.
🍎 • AND, on display at the historic #FrancesTavern downtown, is George Washington’s last-remaining TOOTH! Haha!!!
🍎 • The #WaldorfAstoria, one of the world’s 1st luxury hotels, was invented in New York City. AND furthermore, the #Waldorf is responsible for creating the original idea of “the velvet rope” and its associated VIP connotation.
🍎 • NYC was the very 1st city in America to create a landscaped park. Thanks to a group of NYC’s social elite who lobbied for its establishment, the park was approved by the city in 1857, and today is our beloved #CentralPark.
🍎 • Washington Square Park has a haunted memory of the past. When the yellow fever epidemic came along in the late 1700s, it claimed thousands of lives. In order to dispose of such an enormous number of bodies at one time, city officials had to find a plot of land large enough to hold them all. Right now, lying underneath where Washington Square Park stands today, are the corpses of at least 20,000 buried souls who perished from yellow fever in 1797......YA.
And lastly, on a quirkier note, 🍎 • In 1897, the NYC Post Office decided to enhance their services by implementing a new automated form of technology, thus providing their customers with an additional option for the delivering & receiving packages. Basically, this new distribution system would send your postal items out via a tube-delivery system. This operation last from 1897 to 1953, and its very first delivery - was a cat.

MAKING THE DIFFERENCE 💡Question - When it comes to products, or brands or business, what separates the “great” from the “not-so-great”?
The Answer - A little time, a little creativity & massive attention to detail. See this picture for example. The angles, the placements, the stream of light...every little detail thoughtfully organized & perfectly aligned, rendering a visually impressive and somewhat geometrical work of art.
In many instances like this, focused attention & a little fine tuning can make the difference between what’s memorable, and what’s forgotten.

HAHA!! 🤪 It’s hard to believe this was said in 43 B.C. and by CICERO, of all people!! Isn’t it funny to think about how advanced we’ve become, then you read a statement like this & realize - some things never change. Actually, what’s really humorous, is the irony of it all.
Here’s a few MIND-BLOWING FUN FACTS on our Roman friend... 🙃⌛️ - Cicero, you may be interested to know, is probably one of the world’s most influential authors. EVER. His writing had a MONUMENTAL impact centuries into the future of civilization. It became the catalyst to modern language, a foundation to the principles of law, and the blueprint for grammar & our use of the written word today! - In fact, it was Cicero’s writing that sparked the 14th century Renaissance AND the 18th century Enlightenment!
Astonishing, right?!! Of course, there’s really no telling why this comment was made, being as ironic as it is. But, knowing Cicero and his wayward agenda in politics, he probably intended it that way...😉

This is great! You can just hear what this woman’s voice must sound like...HAHA!!
Rene Gruau certainly had a knack for bringing illustrations to life, adding a bit of personality and attitude to his fanciful characters. This first picture is a 1945 ad for Perrin, a maker of luxury, high-quality gloves.
FUN FACT - Did you know the Perrin brand goes all the way back to the 1800s? Camille Perrin, a leading glove maker during the mid-1800s, decided to open her own fashion house selling high-end gloves. By the 1900s, the Perrin brand was one of the most highly sought-after glove makers and became a staple accessory for the luxury fashions of the day.
