To like comics is to ignore comics.
When your favorite character has existed for 80+ years, has had 100s of writers, has changed over and over again, sometimes they got it wrong. You have to decide what to ignore for your own sanity.

Parker Guilt Complex
The MCU's Spider-Man has an insane guilt complex. "When you can do the things that I can, but you don't, and then the bad things happen, they happen because of you" is the one of the most morbid ways of saying "with great power comes great responsibility"
In Homecoming, Peter had demonstrated that he would take on more than he can even after asking for help. Tony didn't have the best level of communication with Peter.
In Infinity War, Peter sees the aliens and immediately climbs out the bus window. He manages to get himself onto the space ship and readies himself to fight against Thanos.
In Far From Home, Tony's death removes Peter's safety net. Tony, who was ready to take the blame for Spider-Man's mistakes, had died. Peter wants to be the child he is. He wants to be able to grieve the loss of his mentor. Then Nick Fury steps in and makes Peter take a more active role leading to Beck tricking Peter. By the end of the movie, Peter blames himself for putting his friends in the line of fire.
In No Way Home, Peter definitively blames himself for his friends being denied entrance to MIT. Peter takes on the task of saving the villains from other universes. Peter initially blames Goblin for May's death. By the end, Peter blames himself. He sees his friends hurt after the battle at the Statue of Liberty. He decides that they are safer without him in their lives.

earning it
The lab was barely alive. There was no loud music, no sparks flying, and the bots had returned to their respective rooms for the night. Tony fucking despised the silence.
But he couldn't find it in himself to move from the floor.
A handmade cardstock birthday card was half crumpled in his grip. Twenty little messy names were signed below a well wish and an (objectively shitty) drawing of Iron Man. They were all children from a field trip to the MET he had saved a few months back when some disgruntled lunatic decided he was going to build a death ray.
"You're our hero!" in glittery red gel pen.
It made him physically nauseous.
He hadn't saved them. Half had received severe burns, and the other half were so severely traumatized that they would spend the next several years in therapy, at minimum. He had reached out to the parents, the hospitals, and several children's psychiatry clinics. The Maria Stark Foundation would foot the bill for any costs incurred. Tony Stark- ever tossing money at Iron Man's mistakes.
He wasn't a hero. If he had been better, if he had been faster, he could've gotten those kids out without a scratch. He could've better contained the explosions. He could've stopped whatever-the-fuck his name was before there were any explosions.
Happy Birthday!
Another year alive. What did he have to show for it? New aches, new nightmares, new guilt... His skin crawled with the desire to do something anything. He chanced a glance over at the liquor cabinet, eyes catching the empty bottles he'd poured down the drain months ago...
No. He was alive, he was a genius, he was an inventor, he was Tony Goddamn Stark, and he could would make things better. He could deserve the stupid card. His fist uncurled around the crayon drawing of Iron Man, smoothing the crumpled paper gently.
All at once, he pushed himself to his feet, staggering to one of the drafting tables, "Battle stations kids," he clapped his hands, grinning when JARVIS raised the house lights and DUM-E and U rolled back out, "it's time SI got into the skin graft game."

Sure, Tony Stark is a hero and entertaining and I enjoy him well enough, but his motivations more often than not boil down to being self centered and selfish (and the movies don't highlight that nearly enough, which naturally makes me care more than I actually do)

@badthingshappenbingo prompt: Survivor's Guilt
Find the fic on Ao3
Time's Arrow
He’s screwed. Properly, royally screwed. He’s long past fearing death itself, so the stab of grief he feels is for squandering Natasha’s sacrifice in such a stupid, avoidable way. She’d died to give him his life back. Now his family isn’t even going to know what happened to him.
“Hey, why don’t you pick on someone… well, I guess we’re all kind of the same size. Pick on someone the same color?”
Clint’s head whips up, just in time to see a figure flying across the pit. No, not flying. Swinging. ----------------------------------- After Peter saves Clint from the Tracksuit Mafia, Clint makes it his mission to give a teenager no one remembers a home.

My toxic trait is in iron man 2 I wanted Tony's sickness to get really bad and almost kill him just so everyone else would feel bad about being mean to him

I know this is going to prompt a lot of posts ("funny" and serious ones) about Tony knowing guilt very well and instead of being pre-annoyed, I'll just post about #my thoughts instead.
To preface, I'm not a huge fan of Jed Mackay's voice for Tony in this series. However, I did like this moment. Tony being Carol's AA sponsor is one of my favourite things ever and it's always nice to see it on panel. It's Tony talking about guilt - or rather, him specifically talking about using guilt as an addiction, as a crutch - that I'm mostly thinking about right now. It's something he talked about all the way back in Captain America vol 1 when he advised Steve to avoid "grasping for crutches" when Steve talked about how guilty he felt at the time. His choice of words has always interested me because I had an idea about how Tony could've meant it because I knew Tony was an alcoholic (this was a couple of months before he relapsed in the 80s, iirc) but also, this was before he was attending AA meetings or had any kind of sustainable treatment plan in place (he had just stopped drinking because it was bad for him, which did work for over a year). So, the idea that this is something that he essentially referred to as a dependency is interesting. Tony's relationship with guilt is interesting in general to me. Not in the way the fandom usually talks about it at all, which I personally find pretty insulting and often, a little ableist. But no, I am fascinated by Tony's relationship with guilt because a lot of times, he questioned what is wrong with himself that he feels so guilty. This is not an emotion that he (usually) takes comfort in (much like self pity, which he also shuns quite a bit) and he, if I know him well, wouldn't think it was productive to actually doing something about a situation. His response to guilt has pretty much always been doing something about it, taking responsibility. Thinking it was already his responsibility even when other people disagreed (I don't think he was particularly wrong, by the way, because with great power etc.). There's actually more of an argument to be made that he runs from guilt more than he wallows in it. And when he can't, when he's helpless to actually do something about a situation, that's when he's in trouble....till he comes up with a solution/accepts what's going on.

#it's funny because they were like this from the beginning#how was project rebirth anything other than something that stripped steve of his rights and treated him like a weapon?#he was forced to wear tights and dance on stage because they thought he wasn't enough until he went and tested his own mettle#it's not like they would have let him leave either because if the senator hadn't made him a dancing monkey#Phillips's other option for him was to send him to a facility to be experimented on#the reason we look past project rebirth is because we think steve volunteered for it but he didn't#his acceptance into the army was contingent upon his participation in project rebirth and it's success#even erskine said he could only give him a chance#catws was supposed to be about steve having grown jaded with being used for his superhuman abilities#and figuring out that what the government had been doing with respect to using people as weapons and stripping them of their rights is wrong#and he wasn't going shut his eyes and not see it anymore#cacw was a disappointment because the story started with him sticking up for the little guy and went in a completely different direction#and then of course endgame made him ignore all of it and abandon his family to go be with one of the people who experimented on him#and probably experimented on other people over the best part of the last century#steve rogers meta#steve rogers#not my steve indeed#+.+ via cosmicmechanism
