me: yeah i mean i understand the urge to romanticize the past but i also think it’s important to remember that viewing all of history through rose colored glasses often fails to allow us to recognize how difficult it truly was to live back then
also me, the minute i catch even a glimpse of kenneth branagh’s 1993 masterpiece of an adaptation of much ado about nothing:
#speak friend and enter#its soooo good. the production design is incredible. the cast is stacked. the music is amazing. the cinematography is mind blowing#and most importantly: the moment i first saw keanu reeves as don john my brain chemistry was permanently altered#my sixth grade drama teacher: ok guys we’re gonna watch a movie#me two hours later: i wish i was born a boy

WICKED PT. 1 REVIEW
(spoiler free*)
*spoiler free is used generously, there are no major or intentional spoilers but i make no promises for smaller things.
casting:
going into it thought the casting would be the weakest point, but i was pleasantly surprised. that said, i think jon chu’s reasoning for not casting unknowns was total bs and he just wanted a star-studded cast. i also wish they were younger. it was kind of giving movie ben platt terrorizing the teenagers of dear evan hansen. it works for the stage, but my belief was not suspended on the big screen. so while i don’t necessarily agree with how we got here, objectively they were great.
production:
honestly it looked amazing, i wish some parts were graded with a little more contrast, but the colors weren’t muted at all and i thought the cinematography was the perfect level of dramatic and interesting. the highlight was the emerald city. nothing else really stuck out to me in particular but the first 30 seconds or so of one short day looked AMAZING.
the singing:
sounded phenomenal, and this is coming from someone who heard the trailers and panicked. i don’t know what they did in post to make them sound so awful and processed in the trailers, but the movie itself sounded great.
the acting:
i wanted… more. jonathan has such an overly expressive face that worked so well, but cynthia was just the smirk emoji for 2.5 hours and ariana looked like this 🙂 the entire time. they had their moments, of course, but with all the added dialogue (and no song to carry the emotion) i wanted more of a performance.
why the fuck was it 2.5 hours?
i don’t know man. i understood (and enjoyed) some of the additions, but there were an equal number that didn’t add anything, and there were so many scenes where i was like whyyyy is this taking so long. it felt like they were trying to (unsuccessfully) justify the runtime instead of it being a natural result.
2-part split:
this is by far my biggest criticism of the movie. the ending was done BEAUTIFULLY, but the year gap will kill the momentum. i 100% believe that splitting it into two parts will take away from the viewing experience. i actually didn’t have a problem with the splitting when it was first announced, but now that i’ve seen part 1 it feels like a forced cash grab.
rewatchability:
even though i actually really liked it, i don’t think i’d ever electively put it on instead of a stage recording.
SONG BREAKDOWNS:
no one mourns the wicked
a fantastic opening. i went into the movie very skeptical, but it managed to win me over on all accounts. it had the richness and fullness you’d expect + beautiful visuals and ariana proves her doubters (me) wrong immediately.
dear old shiz
the song is nearly identical to the musical, but the changed staging was odd (but also insignificant in a way that made it even more odd).
the wizard and i
i blame the directing for why this song fell flat for me. they toned down the physical animation of elphaba but didn’t add anything else so it was sort of just her walking around and singing at us. also didn’t super love cynthia’s take on it until the last verse, which was phenomenal, probably because the directing didn’t let her do anything with it.
what is this feeling?
SOOOO GOOD!! it sounded amazing, looked amazing, the ensemble was amazing. THIS is what a movie musical is supposed to do: take what was great on stage and expand in a way that is only possible on film. it was fun and inviting and probably one of the strongest numbers in the entire movie.
something bad
i liked what they did with this in terms of the pacing, and i also like that it helped bolster the animal side plot instead of it getting swept into the songs on either side. the singing was unmemorable but the scene was very effective.
dancing through life
i have SUCH mixed feelings on this. i absolutely loved it up until the break when glinda gives elphaba the hat. jonathan sounded amazing, the dancing and cinematography was perfect, but the pacing and flow was totally ruined after what should’ve been a brief interlude for plot. the moment between elphaba and glinda is very strong and still made me cry, but the middle section was just so off-putting.
popular
sooooo good. ariana sounded amazing, and the directing was perfectly energetic. it felt like a music video in the best way. the colors, cinematography, and storytelling was great. they did manage to strip all of the homoeroticism out of it, and ariana’s yuh made a few valiant attempts to escape, but neither detracted from the final product.
i’m not that girl
same issue as wizard and i, i didn’t want just another three minutes of elphaba standing around singing to the camera. the last verse was the best because there was actually something happening visually, which i think also made cynthia sound better. the monologue style number works on stage for a variety of reasons, but felt like a waste of screen time in the movie.
one short day
first 30-60 seconds are AMAZING. took the energy of the stage and shot it to the moon. it actually made me tear up and i have no complaints. the added interlude was a little long, but i’m a sucker for nostalgia bait so i’ll allow it.
a sentimental man
ummm i hated it lol. it felt SO out of place due to some poor (in my opinion) script additions, and the singing wasn’t anything special. the jeff goldblum cameo made them give the wizard way too much emphasis at that point and it completely disrupted the flow of the movie
defying gravity
except for (another) unnecessarily long interlude, this was everything i was waiting for and more. ariana and cynthia sounded amazing together and cynthia sounded PHENOMENAL. ariana delivered the “well, where are your wings?” line perfectly, which is usually for me a weak point with a lot of glindas; and the “i hope you’re happy now that you’re choosing this” verse was perfection both visually and vocally. overall, it did what it was supposed to do: it wrapped up the first act beautifully and showcased cynthia’s voice.
#send asks let’s discuss 😌#*#wicked movie#wicked musical#wicked broadway#cynthia erivo#ariana grande

Goultard's backstory, comparing the Dofus manga and the special episode Part 3 - The Horrors part 1
Part 1 Part 2
Aka the Katar incident aka everything's just gone to shit
One day, Goultard comes home to an empty house and finds a letter, with a plan, signed by Katar.
Goultard : Oh, dinner's not served... That's not normal.... / Dear Goultard, I've invited your family to a little shindig at my place... You're cordially invited to join us. Katar. P.S. : I've drawn a little map on the back of this letter.
(Look at him... so angry... fangs... so cute)
Here's the letter in the special episode :
Surprise! Katar.
Surprise! You do not know me but I'm hosting a little shindig in your favor. Since you weren't home, we took the liberty of inviting your family. Follow the map on the back and join us soon. P.S : don't forget to sharpen your blade. Katar
First off, this letter (the voice actor's performance of it) alone has more personality in 15 seconds than Katar does in the entirety of the dofus manga. Katar looks and acts very differently in the special episode and in the manga. And I won't lie, the latter is pretty boring, especially in this volume. In general, I don't particularly care about Katar and think very little about him. But I really like what they did with him in the special ep. And of course, how can I not mention Mathias Kozlowski? Who does such an AMAZING job as Katar... He's soooo good. He does many voices in this universe, he's also Kriss La Krass, Guy (in the Dofus movie), Grany Smisse, Ogrest (Giant) and additional voices. (Bruno Choël is also FANTASTIC as Goultard btw... The entire cast is gold actually but I'm not here to talk about french voice acting)
Both letters have Katar use "une petite sauterie". "Shindig" is the closest thing I could find but it's not exactly right. Une sauterie is a small intimate and informal gathering. It's a very old fashioned word and is now only used jokingly. It's a cute and silly word and adding the "petite" in front of it makes it sound even cuter and sillier.
"Surprise!" No comment, perfect. I love characters who act silly but in a very unnerving way....
"We took the liberty of inviting your family" already hinting that Katar isn't alone!! I love that.
And Goultard runs all the way to where Katar is keeping his family hostage.
Goultard : If anything happened to them, I would never forgive myself! (And it's true, he never does)
Goultard : Good grief! I'm finally here! The moutain of a thousand screams.... aka boob mountain... (fucking boob moutain man i dont know)
The dialogue between Katar and Goultard right before they start to fight is a little different too.
Goultard : What... What is this sensation? Every muscle in my body is tensing up and... I'm shaking...
Katar : Impressive! Your body reacts instinctively to my presence! A bit like a sixth sense... I was not wrong about you! / Goultard : Who are you and what have you done to my family?
Katar : My name is Katar and your family is fine for now! They're in the cave behind me! You only have to do one thing to see them again.. Beating me!
Goultard : Very well! Now, let me tell you one thing, Katar! I meet lunatics like you every day. It's my job. But you, You're gonna suffer! I'll be merciless... Because you see... No one messes with my family.
Goultard : Ready? / Katar : I was not asking for that much... A violent fight... Gratuitous, with no justification! Now that suits me wonderfully!
(Can they both just shut up??? Oh my god!!!)
In the episode it goes like this :
Katar : Welcome Goultard. I'm Katar. We were impatiently waiting for you. We've wanted to meet a hero of your caliber for so long.
Goultard : Where are they? I swear, If you did them even the slightest harm..
Katar : Settle down. Let's not get worked up. I assure you they want for nothing. If you wish to see them, grant me a dance.
(WHY IS HE SO PRETTY AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH)
It's shorter, straight to the point. Goultard doesn't give a shit who this guy is or what's his problem. He wastes no time, refuses to indulge Katar's sick sense of humor and immediately asks about the only one thing that truly matters to him. You can clearly tell he's furious AND panicked. Terrified of what might have happened to his loved ones.
They have a very interesting dynamic... I think what works so well here is that, Katar dismisses and minimizes the brutality of the situation, not taking it seriously, like it's a joke or a game. Which is exactly the way Goultard behaves most of the time. But in this specific situation and with what's at stake, he can't not take it seriously. Very destabilizing for Goultard.
In the manga, Katar initiates. Goultard is taken aback. At first it looks like he doesn't stand a chance against Katar.
Goultard : Where is he? / Katar : Tired already? Impossible, I can't have been this wrong about you... Move... You can do better... Come on hero, fight! Or i'll kill you, your shitlings and your bitches...
But he manages to turn the tables.
Katar : Seems like you're getting caught up in the game! / Goultard : Believe me... This is everything but a game.
In the special episode, Goultard attacks first and immediately has the upper hand on Katar.
Katar is a sacrier, it makes sense for him to wait until he's injured before fighting back and taking control of the situation.
Get wrecked <3
There's a little moment i like in the manga that's not in the special ep, right before the reveal that Goultard's family is already dead. Interesting to know that at this point Gou holds the belief that hunting monsters is fine but killing humans isn't.
Goultard : I know terminating a human being is wrong.. But I sense an evil too great inside you! You have to disappear! / Katar : Tell me, Goultard... What makes you think I'm human? And above all, what makes you believe you can defeat me? You hit like an old lady, Goultard! It looks like you're holding back, like you're scared to let loose... I think I have the solution! Come over here... Go say hello to your dear family!
Kicking him in the balls, grabbing his hair and dragging him through the dirt. I like that. I really like that.
(baby baybay bayayy bayby baby byabbaby baabyy)
This is horrible.... AND BRUNO CHOEL MY GOD!!! I'm begging them to make Goultard go through the horrors in the next season because I need more of that. He's just so good at crying and begging and whimpering and and and. He did say in an interview that he's very passionate and usually cries for real when playing these kind of scenes so the emotions in his voice feel as honest as possible. Simply amazing.

Laurie!! 💛 (sorry, I just live in your inbox now 💖)
I'm back on duty and I'm here to tickle the collective fandom brain.
With Presumed Innocent coming out soon (aaaah), I would just like to hear all your thoughts on Rusty.
Is he guilty? If so, would we still do unholy things with him (duh, obviously)? Or is he just an innocent little guy and only guilty of cheating and murdering pussy? He obviously likes being choked and I'm not complaining. What else might he like? Is he a pancakes or bacon/scrambled egg breakfast kinda guy? He does need his protein tho, for several reasons... 👀
Please let me/us know all your thoughts and hopes for the new show and the character we're blessed with this summer, thank youuuu.
Paying my Rusty tax for inspiration ✨ (again)
hiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii! 💖 it's so good to see you in my asks again, daphne! thank you for the rusty tax (and the painful reminder that i wish this was ME) and the great questions! i've thought about that man A LOT but the majority of those thoughts are just about how badly i need him so... they're not too constructive... let's see what my -1 brain cell comes up with pretty much on the spot! 🤭
i don't think he's guilty. since the first teaser, i just had the feeling that he's innocent and his wife killed carolyn. clearly he has a talent for lying and manipulating facts (isn't it essentially his job?), he even lied to his therapist in one of the recent clips i saw! trying to lie to the human equivalent of a lie detector is both bold and dumb. he's clearly not completely innocent. cheating on your wife is bad but when your wife is ruth negga it's DOUBLE bad! i watched a quick interview of the woman who plays carolyn and oof. renate has something special. so i kind of get it <3 but i am better than a man and i would not ruin my marriage! the text messages and calls he's sending her are also very bold and dumb. he should know better than anyone how to avoid looking guilty. the dna, the messages, the stalking, the affair that was not so hidden since they were going out together and everything, this is just so stupid! he'd probably be so mad if he defended a client who basically did everything he shouldn't do and now tries to plead for innocence. i'm interested to see if we get an insight on how an attorney of his prestige and of his rank can turn into the most stupid person you've ever met. i mean, we know how, he's desperate to get his dick wet. but still, maybe there's more to it. maybe carolyn isn't that sweet, smart, picture perfect girl either. i'm giving her the side eye too.
i'm soooo excited for the show!!! my only point of reference is defending jacob so i like to compare both series. defending jacob had some really good twists so i expect the same from presumed innocent. in my opinion, one of the most powerful plot twists in defending jacob included the mother, laurie (i can still hear chris evans saying i love you laurie it was an amazing moment <3). so maybe that's why i focused on barbara sabich right away. i don't know, i'm so curious to see. i want to watch the original movie after the series, just to compare as well. i might never do it but at least i'm planning on it! anyway. can we just take a moment to appreciate how crazy it is to have this kind of show as your first television project? jake really popped off with this and his acting is absolutely insane in what we've seen so far! everyone in the cast seems solid. i'm guessing they showed most of the freaky sexy scenes in the trailers already to tease the audience, but i'm curious to know if there is more of that good stuff that they're hiding! i'm also looking forward to watch jake and peter saarsgard on screen again! and the glasses. i can't word vomit all of this and not bring up the glasses. now that we know jake is practically legally blind, i proclaim myself the protector of his corneas and i demand that he wears glasses more often. my motivation is purely selfless and it's not because i fold like a folding chair at the sight of jake with glasses (vision pun intended).
i saved the best stuff for last apparently! but mmm. what is that man into? i can't cook to save my life so he's eating cereals for breakfast. i'm kidding! (well not really but still). we know he's into choking, finger sucking, doggy style, public sex/sneaking away in a public setting, he loves the thrill of forbidden things and we see how touchy he is with carolyn so i'm guessing he's into marking because it's like a proof of something that is happening in secret of others? idk, just thinking. i don't know if his stalking habits fall into kinky or just regular obsession over the one thing he can't have under his total control, but i'd lowkey like it if he extended his stalking with some spicy elements. the way he holds on to carolyn, touches her everywhere, it's giving possessive and i love it. the ring though. oh the ring. why doesn't he take it off? does carolyn like it, does she get off knowing she has a taken man under her spell, that this greek god of a man prefers her to his wife? does rusty like the reminder of his cheating? does he like the self-inflicted guilt and pain of being reminded of his horrible and immoral actions? i think there's definitely some masochist tendencies in him. he's so quick to apologize for everything like oh no i might have killed a woman but i'm sorry tho </3 he might loooove the fake pity and fake apologies. whether he uses this tactic or if it's used on him does not really matter. to put it briefly: rusty is a FREAK and i want to be the somebody who matches his freak!
thank you for doing this, daphne! it was so fun to ramble pure nonsense fuelled by the sad 2 hours of sleep i've gotten last night 😭 i can't wait to read this tomorrow and be weirded out by how little sense it makes. i especially can't wait to read this after watching the entire series and seeing how wrongggg i was. it will be just as much fun as writing all of this! mwah mwah ily! 💖💖💖

I have soooo many thoughts about the Scott Pilgrim anime.
Unfortunately none of my friends have watched it yet so I'm quietly going insane. Fortunately Tumblr exists! So I get to scream into the void and rave about this gem!!
Going in, I felt the pacing for the first episode felt way too fast?? Was really disappointed because it seemed we skipped too many steps forward to the big fight? Then OHHH boy suddenly it made perfect sense.
Scott, btw, has immaculate rizz. Can't believe it worked.
I was on the fence whether or not that was different good or different bad, but the second episode kept me in. Third episode all but confirmed I wasn't jumping ship at any point
I absolutely ADORE how the other characters in Scott and Ramona's lives get a lot more love. Though we got some hints that the league wasn't all that bad in previous adaptations (well, mainly just the one ex), the anime really fleshes them out and shows hey!! They have their own side of the story!!
About Ramona: I'm glad they made it more believable that she's actually in lesbians with Scott. They switched their positions and instead showed her being the one to go completely gaga over him for the entire show, something the rest of the cast consistently point out makes zero sense!! Total dumbass move on her part. They're perfect for each other god
I know I praise the show for fleshing out characters, but I guess the price for that is some important figures get pushed to the background. I guess being an adaptation it assumes the viewer will have read and watched both the graphic novels and the movie and wouldn't need to know more about these characters? Honestly not too affected by that actually
That being said, the anime doesn't require you to immerse yourself in the preceding comic/movie. People new to the series will still have a blast!! But your viewing experience would be vastly enhanced if you actually did read and watch them because they go well hand-in-hand
The game and the movie had amazing soundtracks, so it's no surprise that the anime would deliver on that front as well (but I might just be a bit biased just because of the mortal kombat theme in the finale)
But actually surprising, is the voice cast was very good?? I knew going in the cast from the film was gonna be the English voice casts, but I was a bit skeptical because live-action actors don't always do a good job doing VA work (LOOKING AT YOU CRISPRAT). There was never a moment where they came off as awkward.
Despite some very glaring changes, the show retains pretty much the same story beats and themes as the book, but with an additional focus on Ramona's own tendency to run away from her problems. The finale still ends with them wanting and trying to be better for each other, but this time everyone gets a happy ending!! So I think that kinda makes it better than everything that came before it
My dad talked about how amazing he thought the Scott Pilgrim movie was and I'm gonna take SO MUCH JOY knowing he'll be seething by the first episode alone. This shit is so gay. Absolute 🔥

I finished Yellowjackets and I already miss it! Any recs for what to watch to fill the void?
Omg I feel you every day of my life I miss Yellowjackets I wish I could watch it all for the first time again 😭
I don’t really watch that many shows so I’m terrible with recommending stuff 😅
If you want more depravity & complicated awful female villains & anti heroes with complex toxic sapphic dynamics Hostel 2 is my go to but you do have to watch the first one to understand it & I love the first one myself but it is very man heavy with characters lol
If you are really wanting to lean more into the messed up flesh consuming homoerotic codependent sapphic dynamic aspect specifically I’d recommend Ginger Snaps or Jennifer’s Body the main canon sapphic female relationships in both those movies are brain rotting in similar ways to JackieShauna. (Though Ginger Snaps gets incestuous so I know that’s as quick for a lot of people tread carefully)
Ooh as far as TV shows go you’d probably enjoy Killing Eve if you like Yellowjackets although that one the writing really goes downhill pretty badly so I do hesitate to recommend it unless you’re in it for the parts that are worth it & prepared for disappoint down the line…. Ugh but Eve & Villanelle are SUCH amazing characters!!
Dead to Me is another show that’s really good & far less depraved & more drama centric than the other stuff I’ve mentioned. However in my opinion the writing does go downhill but the first 2 seasons? Iconic. Not canonically gay like the other things I’ve mentioned but still a delicious dynamic between two complicated & somewhat crazy women.
Not in the same genre as my other recs but Bottoms is a great comedic movie if you just want crazy & sort of awful lesbians.
Oh —- ok last 3 recommendations. These ones don’t necessarily have the toxic crazy sapphic girlies element of YJ that I just assume is a big part of the draw (it is for me lol) HOWEVER they are some of my faves -
Hannibal. I love this show. It’s art. I don’t have anything else to say that hasn’t been said meow articulately by more hardcore fans. I watched this entire show in a fever haze when I had Covid so that probably affects my analytical ability but I promise it’s great. It’s also a little man heavy & the female characters could be… done better sometimes so that is a criticism I have that keeps it from being a number one fave for me but Hannibal & Will are VERY compelling & the plot & visuals are soooo good.
Scream mtv I honestly feel like you’ve seen this one I’m pretty sure but it’s a fave of all time & Emma/Audrey is one of my fave ships of all time. Excellent cast excellent writing it’s so good.
Bates Motel. This show is so slept on in fandom & it’s probably the best horror tv I’ve ever seen from start to finish it tells an amazingly cohesive prequel backstory for one of the most iconic villains of all time in a way that honors the book & film both of which I LOVE & somehow manages to stay fresh & shocking & exciting despite the audience knowing where it’s going. For quality horror tv I can’t recommend this show highly enough it’s honestly the best thing on this list on an objective level like the cinematography the fantastic acting from Vera Farmiga & Freddy Highmore especially but also Max Theriot & Olivia Cookie I just - I LOVE this show. Heavy heavy trigger warning though not just for incest which is inherent to a Psycho prequel but like…. Everything you could ever need a trigger warning for. There is a significant amount of SA shown so yeah be careful.
Anyway there you go you’ve probably seen a lot of the stuff on this list but this is what I could think of to watch next to somewhat keep the mood of Yellowjackets although of course we both know YJ is unique enough you’re never going to recapture that exact vibe 😉
If anyone else has recommendations also I’d also be curious! ❤️
Oh wait last thing my best friend Juliet Lewis plays another iconic traumatized girly with maybe worse daddy issues than Natalie even in Natural Born Killers. This is one of my favorite movies but it is NOT for everyone. You are signing up for unapologetic depravity & sympathetic serial killer villain main characters with a toxic relationship. Now for me those are selling points but it is a very messed up movie so yeah. Trigger warning for SA incest & basically every dynamic in the movie being the definition of toxic.
Okay that’s off the top of my head for watching after YJ I’m done now lol 🫶
****Edit I’m listening to music on my porch as I play on tumblr & I Know the End by my best friend Phoebe Bridgers came on & I remembered to recommend School Spirits it’s not exactly the same horror vibes of YJ but I just think you’d like it because it’s a delightfully creepy compelling & fun ghost story / mystery with absolutely wonderful characters fun cinematography exciting lore a good plot & a banger soundtrack ok I’m done now lmao go watch School Spirits it’s so great
#recs#movie tag#tv tag#mutuals#I know you’ve probably seen a lot of these but anyway#it’s what I could think of haha#anyone else feel free to add 😊

Who are your top 5 favorite ships ever (can be canon or non canon) from any media? Why love them?
I found your blog because of your One Piece posts (love them). Can I ask, is OP in your top 7 favorite media ever (until now)? What made those 7 media (can be anime/manga, books, movies, tv series, etc) special to you? Thanks if you want to answer.....🌻
Hello!
My top five ships currently, in no particular order, are;
Mishanks
Eruri
Erasermic
Akiangel
kuroken
I don't really have canon ship cause I don't really like to see full on romance in the media I consume 🫣. I actually only actively engage with the romance genre in fanfics or fandom. I like to watch people I ship interact and for them to have deep ties to each other but I have no interest in actually seeing them become canon. I mainly like ships because I think they have a really fun or interesting dynamic.
as for my favorite media across board thats a little tricky caus eI have a hard time conflating things like that and so I'm just gonna give my top 2 in the categories you listed.
Books:
Purple Hibiscus by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie - It's just a great look into what it means to be middle-class Nigerian in a time of great country-wide and personal upheaval and it's such an interesting look at christianity in Nigeria and out a lot of things I didn't even realize I was feeling into words. It also has one of my favorite mentor characters of all time so yeah. I seriously recommend to anybody. It deals with a lot of heavy stuff so keep that in mind tho.
Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe - This was the book that got me into reading and so therefore will always hold a special place in my heart, because reading; books and fanfiction is such a huge part of my life it's hard to imagine who I'd be without it. I recommend to anyone whos interested in learning about one of the main cultures in Nigeria, Igbo its fascinating and tragic.
Anime/Manga:
Mob Psycho 100 - My feeling on Mob Psycho are best explained in this post. But long story short I love it so much.
Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood - God what's not to love? This has some of the best written female characters I have seen in any piece of media period not to talk of shonen anime. It's just so good and I'd seriously recommend.
TV Show:
Reservation dogs - I love this show so much and would stake my life on it. As someone aspiring to be a filmmaker this is the kind of stuff I pray to make. It's soooo good and it's technically a comedy but it's not held back by genre. The cast is great the show is great I recommend watching
Breaking bad - Every single good thing you've ever heard about breaking bad is true. I truly understand why this show is regarded as one of the best of all time.
Movie:
Into the Spiderverse - It makes me want to believe in something bigger than myself. You do truly leave feeling like you could be spiderman and no superhero movie has ever made me feel that way. Also, I love animation and this is about as animation as it gets.
Everything Everywhere All At Once - Hands down the best multiverse movie to ever exist and I don't care. Amazing
Bonus: Your Name - My favorite anime film. The twist literally blew my mind. Its so warm and cozy and fun, and then shit really goes down.
As for music I generally will listen to anything as long as I like it but I gravitate to Folk music and my favorite artist is Hozier.
As for One Piece it's actually not one of my favorite animes. It's definitely my favorite of the big three and classic shonen but yeah. It has and will always have a really special place in my heart cause it was my introduction to anything anime or manga. But yeah I don't keep up with it in what anyone could call a normal way. I just have a little to many problems with how the female characters are treated to really consistently keep up with it. It's kinda better now with Bonny but yeah. I appreciate the story and as anyone on my blog can tell I love the characters. but yeah, ironically, not one of my favorites. Will forever be in my heart though.

i'll listen to some version of some album for good measure not even so much as dutiful research as "yeah i liked the music haha yaaayyy" and i just am generally like "listening to the music what in the?" so knocking back any album is like, probably me firing up the goosebumps the musical phantom of the auditorium original screen cast recording playlist again, hell yes
anyways what i remember. first of all you understand that for a while all i Really specifically knew about little shop, beyond that it existed and had a joie de vivre & je ne sais quoi & the plant, was that there was the dentist song. thanks to marble hornets (that i knew even this). and i knew Just this. so for a good decade i've at least been able to hum the chorus to myself like (be a dentist) you have a talent for causing things Pain (pain!) and i love a bicuspid lyric usage, don't tell joe iconis (imperfect rhyme)
amazed when i did hear it like i've never heard this titular song?? it's so fun. i guess i wouldn't have unless i was experiencing little shop of horrors. but now here we are like i sure remember that one. i also really enjoy The Sound of the chorus of some fun now, both the melody and prosody of it. likewise so high energy and catchy and that juxtaposes so humorously with recalling our montage of rick moranis pouting while getting sucked (the '80s gum lsoh movie novelty stickers ranked by rick moranis's sex appeal text post scrolls by at half opacity while i voice over "a tremendously boneable ricky m") which brings me to one of the most memorable parts of the feed me song being like okay really long list of "what is going on in lsoh metaphor wise (speculated or stated as intended Or as interpreted): for one, sex with the plant" like i do truly appreciate that list just as i truly appreciate someone making a post about which rick moranises are hottest in the vintage gum stickers
i saw indeed the "this is kind of sing speaking as i remember? does it count?" number seems to indeed be a song, da-doo? which works out b/c i sure recall enjoying the doo-wop style backup echoing that sing speaking, speak singing. and of course it being really funny and itself just so B movie and lord like of course choreographed in acting And cinematography and that's so powerful in juxtaposition like grabbing directors Make Your Movie Musical Have The Movieness Work With The Musicalness anyways thanks frank oz obviously. and speaking of being able to see it, is it somewhere that's green that has that like Surburbia Fantasy sequence because that was soooo fucking funny lmfao they crushed that thank god. annnnd. suppertime sequence standing out being so like No Jokes ominous & harrowing for a scene? great to have that, greatly executed. umm he sure Does look like plant food to me, is another musical moment i remember even as that was earlier and of course i remember it due to Effect like exactly, i'm there. it's like the elevation and method of expression that is A Song has effect and it pwns
umm. i mean this is turning into like "what's Everything i remember" but as i especially remember like i do recall any of the movie's required whole new closing number, as stated like also love how there's just plenty to forever pace about mulling over they die, they don't, compare, contrast, i sure don't mind having Both, or all the more opportunity to Juxtapose as much & muse. umm oh my god yeah suddenly seymour like i'm missing some big one huh. t4t happy pride. can you believe little shop had small joe iconis immediately love Musical Theatre or can you believe that for real rick moranis was just There on closing night of joe's broadway debut musical that also is a great and obviously lsoh esque musical and it was just a coincidence? he was just there? and there was already that picture of him (rick) and will when he (rick) was visiting deh and it's like ooh That's giving father & son, will roland seymour krelborn when WHEN and it's me and even as i post this i'm not That familiar with the show in the least (only seen the film once or twiceish, never a stage production) and yet. and later completely coincidentally rick moranis walks on in to closing night of broadway be more chill (chill da-doo) and later than that. finally will roland seymour krelborn. mwah

2023 Movie Journey #13: Barbie
barbie. i had been so excited about this movie for such a long time! as i'm rapidly heading towards forty, i tend to have a pretty good gauge of what i like and what i don't--so good by now that i usually don't need much to know in advance what i'll love. this was one of those things.
it wasn't even related to the massive ad campaign or the giant fandom joy in response to it before i saw it myself--they announced that margot robbie was producing a barbie movie where she would play barbie and greta gerwig would write it, and that was kenough. i knew it was gonna be My Kind Of Movie.
and so i was excited, because there aren't that many of those. i try hard to go into movies with an open mind, because i really like liking things, and i'm happy to be surprised. but i also kind of feel like that's the stance i have to take, because very few movies are the sort i predictably love. musicals are rare, i'm a horror wimp even if i've gotten a little better at finding good horror comedies, and the majority of the other movies my local theater releases are action, superhero, or christian-centered.
so giving me a truly amazing cast crammed into a surprisingly tight story overflowing with feminism and feelings was a true gift, even better than i hoped for. and the length of my review probably won't indicate that, because i feel like barbie is a hard movie for me to review the way i do others--i don't have a ton of things i want to break down and criticize, but i also don't want to just list off why it's awesome. that would literally just be me making a long bullet-point list until i ran out of things i could remember.
and i feel like if you've seen the movie, you know why it's amazing and fun and deep and beautifully shallow, all at the same time. and if you haven't seen it, i really don't think i could explain the whole of it to you in a doing-it-justice way. so i'm just going to mention a few things, but don't let that make you think i only found a few things notable. this movie is art.
when it comes to some things i loved about this movie, let's start with the fact that it is my exact sense of humor. i couldn't get over that, the whole time, as ken is serenading barbie with a matchbox twenty song i definitely didn't used to think was a misogynist anthem and then the shot pulls back and it's ALL the kens doing the same thing. or the multiple group dance numbers. or simu liu as ken's archenemy, ken. or the movie's opening song that narrates AT barbie and changes as her experience does. seeing the movie a second time didn't make any of it less funny for me--it's a perfect blend of snark and meta jokes and queer tones.
another important and great thing! AMERICA FERRERA. i knew she was in the cast, but honestly, the cast list that was released before the movie even came out was soooo long, she was just one of many actors i like that i looked forward to. i didn't expect her to play such a central role, and despite this being The Barbie Movie, they really made her the heart of the story--or at least, a heart of the story. she grounds it in such a great way and adds a different kind of depth from what margot robbie could bring to actually playing (and looking like) a barbie doll.
i just love what america ferrara got to do with this role, and getting to see the kind of work she takes on over time. this movie was a nice reminder of how artificially limited the opportunities are, for marginalized talent--even a woman of color who's worked a lot, like she has, had to be sort of snuck into this movie and then made important once people were already watching. i'm grateful to greta gerwig and margot robbie and all the other people in charge for wanting to do that, but it still sucks to know that it wasn't ever going to happen otherwise. she wouldn't be given this kind of project to lead on her own, when she's just as talented and worth watching. she made me cry.
major shoutout also to the character in this movie who i originally named something like 'woman on a bench,' played by ann roth. i absolutely adored her and her scene; it was small but so meaningful. it really grabbed hold of me. and then i found out that she's a 91-year old friend of greta gerwig's in real life, and also happens to be a super-famous costume designer who worked on (among piles of other things) mamma mia! i love that.
another great casting note: i was really excited in advance about the fact that emma mackey was included, because i've very slowly been watching sex education with @actuallylukedanes--but even before i saw any of that show, i had seen gifs of her as maeve on tumblr for years and i couldn't get over how much she looked like margot robbie. then they put her in this movie with margot robbie, so of course i highly supported that.
what i didn't expect and wasn't really prepared for was the fact that they didn't just give us emma mackey. they gave us a sex education trifecta! leander and i spent the movie trying to figure out how we knew the mattel employee who seemed super familiar, only to eventually learn he was the actor who plays adam. and i still haven't been able to get past the facial hair and other barbie aesthetics that made him totally unrecognizable for me, but the fact that they also took the actor who plays eric and made him a ken? perfection.
literally the only problem i had with this movie was at the end. unlike my best friend, i completely agreed with barbie's choice to become human. my bipolar heart always lands on the side of 'why wouldn't you want all the feelings, even when they're so much they drown you and you don't think you can take it? more feelings please.'
but the very final scene, when she's getting supported by her new little found family (which i also loved, yay them) and heads into a building for what i definitely assumed was a job interview...has her going to the gynecologist. and this scene gave me possibly my first moment ever of being the person with an Unpopular Opinion. i used to play an ask game about that, and it was really fun, but i was always like, how do i know what's unpopular or popular?
in this case, my reaction really does seem to have been unpopular. or uncommon, anyway. we find out she's going to see her gynecologist. and barbie is lit up with joy, it's clearly meant to be a triumphant moment. finally, she's fully human. she's not perfect but she's a real woman.
and all i could think was, wait. wtf. does this movie think you need a vagina to be a real woman?!?? i literally sat in silence for a minute while the credits played before asking my best friend something like, if i was totally crazy for finding that moment transphobic.
because it's not like i don't know that there are people who claim to be feminists who hate trans women. i just didn't expect to end a movie i absolutely adored by feeling as if i'd just been slapped in the face by one.
and as far as i can tell since seeing it, almost nobody else interpreted the scene that way. a lot of trans folks seem to have appreciated the movie specifically because they felt seen by barbie's journey, not the opposite. and of course, the cast even has a trans woman in it! (she was great.) so i highly doubt the people making the movie are secretly trying to send a message about how much they hate trans people. on my second watch in theaters, when i already knew it was coming, it wasn't so rough.
but it still upset me in that first moment, and led to a whole personal epiphany that wasn't actually about barbie but that i guess i will forever have to thank the barbie movie for? so that's weird, though not bad. i just had to note all of that, because it was surprising and important and it's rare for me to realize that my reaction/opinion on something isn't one i can find tons of other people already shared if i look into it.
beyond that, though, this movie is just the best. it's everything. it gives us the nine-women supreme court that ruth bader ginsburg recommended, while also pointing out that too much power corrupts even the blankest of slates. it's here to teach kids about misogyny and to show everybody the wide range of outfits and accessories barbie has collected in her lifetime. it lets barbie have independence and leaves ken behind where i hope he one day realizes his rivalry with ken masks a totally different kind of tension, so he can have love after all. i don't think i'll ever get sick of it.

This, along with the song Rainy Day of the same album (Lost and Gone Forever 1999), were featured in Life as a House. Get to Know You Me!
I was tagged by both @sinceremercy and @isabellehemlock -- you're great and thanks for tagging :)
Three Ships
Loustat (IWTV) -- my current loves. They're messy and complex and absolute disasters but I cannot get enough
Otayuri (Yuri on Ice) -- I love the dynamic between Yuri's spitfire and Otabek's ability to roll with anything. They're sweet together and the fanfics out there are amazing
Herongraystairs (The Infernal Devices) -- as much as I'm not a fan of the series or author in general, this is my first OT3 and I love how much they all want each other
First Ship
Aragorn/Arwen -- this ship is basically sacred to me. I don't even interact with fanworks on it for the most part because my headcanons are so precious. I shipped them from the moment I read the books at age 8
Last song
"Wuthering Heights" by Kate Bush -- I've recently gotten really into her music and this song is soooo hard to sing but I want to master it
Last movie
Anonymous (2011) -- I watched this for Sam Reid and that's it. No matter how different he looks I know it's him cause his voice. We don't talk about his voice enough friends
Currently reading
Queen of the Damned by Anne Rice -- I'm about halfway through and it's really getting good!
Pleasure Activism by adrienne maree brown -- This book is changing my life. Especially while I'm dealing with a lot of disability shit, it's love to read about radical pleasure. And the idea that justice does not stop with solidarity or retribution or even reconciliation, but with abundant pleasure for all people is honestly overwhelmingly beautiful in the best way.
Come As You Are by Emily Nagoski -- Everyone read this book to understand your own stress responses if nothing else. Appreciating the science, wishing there was more data/discussion of non-cis people.
Currently watching
Sense 8 -- It's rare to see a show with this big of a cast have fully developed characters like this. Each of the main 8 characters could have their own show, and then they're also a perfectly balanced team with great interactions. Currently midway through season 2.
Currently consuming
Half-price Valentine's candy that I bought for myself the day after because I'm cheap but I like chocolates
Currently craving
Physical touch. I want to be held so bad rn
Tagging some old and some new friends: @goldenyearofgrief @lestatslestits @thechosenpyro @nikysavi @ineffablylestat @anonymouslyunremarkable @dontbesylly @savage-garden-nights @mythicaltzu

1, 5, 15 for musical asks!
Thank you so much for asking!!!
1. What is your current favourite musical, and is it different from what it was at the end of last year?
Ahhhh it's so hard to pick :D I think objectively (how insane the themes make me and have made me for a long time) it's probably TdV, but right now (3:28 am on December 28th) it's LOTR because I've been listening to it on loop for like 2 weeks ajsjfjhk. Like it's kinda flawed but I love the music so much and it's giving me major nostalgic feels. Last December I think it was Elisabeth (or maybe TdV tbh, that one's hard to displace) but I think Elisabeth is maybe my 3rd favourite now so there's not a huge change :D
5. Did you see any live musicals this year? What did you think of them?
Yess, I saw a whole bunch of them!! Highlights include Rebecca (Vienna), Cabaret (Finland), Evita (Germany), Wicked (London) & Les Mis (London). I really liked Cabaret and Evita (both were staged in innovative ways), had fun and appreciated the casts at Wicked and Rebecca (both were staged in uninnovative ways XD) (ahdhgjgj half joking), but Les Mis kinda sucked (I couldn't see anything because I had a cheap balcony seat and a guy with a big head sat in front of me) ajdjgj. But the cast there was amazing so it's not like it was a complete waste!!!
In total I must've seen like 20+ pieces of live theatre ahsjjf, but some of it I can't reveal here because I'm not open online about where I'm living in Germany. I'm really hyped to be living there, though, because good and speedy train connections are making next year seem very very promising!!!
15. Infodump to me about a musical!
Oooh idk which one... :D Maybe something I haven't talked about on this blog a lot before but I really enjoy: The Lord of the Rings (2006/2007/2023)!!
I first listened to this one in like 2017, because I liked the books/movies and discovered that it existed. Mostly I played Lothlorien on loop because it's an amazing song and there's an actual proshot video of it on youtube and Laura Michelle Kelly as Galadriel is really sparkly and pretty. Then I listened to the rest of the album and the music is just great all over!!! It's done by AR Rahman (composer, multi-instrumentalist, winner of a million awards for film soundtracks mostly in Indian cinema), Värttinä (Finnish folk band - most famously creators of Ievan polkka) and Christopher Nightingale (don't know much about him ahdhf). The Finnish folk influence is especially audible in the songs of the elves, they have real ancient cattle call vibes sometimes (in a good way xD). But my favourite songs are actually the more story-based and cinematic ones that I'm drawn to attribute to Rahman, as well as the soaring instrumental sections. So I would rank my fave songs (yes, all of them are favourites):
Lothlórien
The Road Goes On
Now and For Always
Wonder
The Cat and the Moon
Star of Earendil
The Final Battle
The Song of Hope
That's most of the main songs actually ahdhfgjgk.
The show is flawed, like I mentioned before; for someone who doesn't know the story from the LOTR books or movies it would get confusing pretty quickly, and because of the size of the cast it's hard to get insight into many of them in such a limited timespan (Boromir and the elves other than Arwen and Galadriel fall especially flat). But I love the music soooo much and I'm so excited that it was produced again in 2023, and in such a cozy and compact way too (it was done in a 200-seat theatre with an actor-musician cast as a semi-immersive production). The London cast recording is on Spotify, everyone should listen to it!

MY-GOD! WHERE-DOES-ONE-START! Ok so I watched a few scenes from the last 2 Tokyo Revengers live action movies (couldn't watch the whole thing cause there were no subs but I wanted to see Nijiro play this type of role soooo bad to wait) and...just get me fucking there pleaaase! When this live action came out, people were like ok it's coming for Crows Zero-WHAT CROWS ZERO, CROWS ZERO COULD-NEVER! Back when I started watching Japanese series, I was watching lots of those with deliquents and all and, because I was crazy about Oguri Shun, I had watched Crows Zero too. Even back then, I was disappointed after watching, cause I had heard soooo much about it, but after all that I had watched, that movie wasn't that of a big deal for me. I felt the pacing was weird, the characters didn't have enough depth, but I enjoyed the fights. It's also one of my least favorite movies of Oguri Shun. But back to Crows Zero, cause the comparison isn't why I'm losing it.
First of all, I think they did a decent job with the plot, which isn't always easy to see in live actions. Second of all, the choreography is probably one of the best fighting choreos I have ever seen in a Japanese movie of this type. The strong launches were brutal too, so much in fact that I hoped they were yanking dolls around and not real people, like you know, stunt men. If those were real people *slow clap, standing ovation* omg and I hope you're ok.
Now for the acting part....I have seen most of these actors in other roles and I can't stress enough how important it is to have a good director, cause some of these guys...I have no words. I won't speak for everyone just for those who stood out to me the most. I can't tell a lot about Ryo Yoshizawa, cause, even though I fell in love with his acting from the first movie, I haven't watched his work anywhere else, but, this man's eyes...he acts with the fucking eyes alone sometimes like...I dunno, it's like, the way he depicts Mikey, the pain, that look like "I've seen shit in my life", etc. And that immense difference of his stare as Mikey in the past versus the one in the present from the previous movie. It's amazing to me how a person can have a straight face, like 1 expression on and still be able to depict different emotions the way he did. All my life I thought that if you wanna act, especially when it comes to feelings, you got to use your expressions a lot (not exaggerate them though cause then we move to overacting which I am personally not a fan of) but this guy proved me wrong. Moving on to Yuki Yamada. I have a love and hate relationship with this dude, cause in some stuff I hated him and others I liked him, but as Draken? Take my money. I think his character is a little more huggable when he plays him though. I didn't get that feeling from the anime from Draken. Like, I like him and all, he's fun, an amazing friend etc but somehow, maybe because Yamada's face is cutesie and not as "blank" or "chill" like the anime, he looks like this big bear you wanna hug. Like, it's a little cuter for me for some reason. As far as this movie is concerned, I liked the consistency. Everyone who played in the previous movie showed amazing consistency and sure that is also because the movies weren't made that far away from each other, imo. I reaaally really liked seeing him in this role again. Next up, Mahiro Takasugi. Honey dove, petit man I never expected I'd see in such a movie...I liked him. But, like I said earlier overacting isn't my thing so, there were moments I think he could have played it at a lower tone, but at this point I think it's his style. I used to think he did that only with comedy but, based on what I've watched so far from him, this is how he shows strong emotions so I get it. I loved his casting first and foremost. I think the guy he played really matched his uhhhhhh how do you say that, presence, his demeanor? It just felt like it really suit him, you know? And I just couldn't get passed that hairstyle at first and how it actually worked when he acted all deliquent like when he went to pick a fight with Baji. Now I want to see him in such role again. So surprised, so happy to see him like that and nailing the role. But I have to admit this isn't the first time he's surprised me. I think nth beats the pierced bad boy role he once played. I don't even remember the name of the movie cause I hated it but his role-my goodness xD. Full on visual kei out of nowhere. xD I like it when actors try many different things. Next up I'd like to give it to Kento Nagayama who, even though I didn't watch the full thing and had no subs to understand everything, he managed to make me like him, laugh with him, get insanely angry at him and then sympathize and cry with him from scene to scene. I think it takes real skill to do that without your audience knowing what you're saying or following the plot step by step. I'd also like to mention that I have watched only the first season of Tokyo Revengers in anime so I knew very few and vague stuff about the season on which these 2 movies were based off, which made me even more impressed about what he was doing. I want to see this man in other movies too, now, cause, like Yoshizawa I have yet to watch sth from him and I am really interested to see his acting in other things. (1/2)
#imagine not being able to watch a film fully but still want to talk about it so bad oooohhhh#i can't wait for the subs#it looks reaaally good
