Loustat (IWTV) -- my current loves. They're messy and complex and absolute disasters but I cannot get enough

Otayuri (Yuri on Ice) -- I love the dynamic between Yuri's spitfire and Otabek's ability to roll with anything. They're sweet together and the fanfics out there are amazing

Herongraystairs (The Infernal Devices) -- as much as I'm not a fan of the series or author in general, this is my first OT3 and I love how much they all want each other

Aragorn/Arwen -- this ship is basically sacred to me. I don't even interact with fanworks on it for the most part because my headcanons are so precious. I shipped them from the moment I read the books at age 8

Pleasure Activism by adrienne maree brown -- This book is changing my life. Especially while I'm dealing with a lot of disability shit, it's love to read about radical pleasure. And the idea that justice does not stop with solidarity or retribution or even reconciliation, but with abundant pleasure for all people is honestly overwhelmingly beautiful in the best way.

Come As You Are by Emily Nagoski -- Everyone read this book to understand your own stress responses if nothing else. Appreciating the science, wishing there was more data/discussion of non-cis people.

Sense 8 -- It's rare to see a show with this big of a cast have fully developed characters like this. Each of the main 8 characters could have their own show, and then they're also a perfectly balanced team with great interactions. Currently midway through season 2.

You asked for romantic vibes of any kind — new, established, domestic, fluffy. And my brain came up with this moment of Joe and Nicky’s relationship. A moment when their love is established, but still feels new and wondrous. A moment of new beginnings.

By the time they had decided to go looking for the women showing up in their dreams, it had been decades. In their defense, they had been somewhat preoccupied. They had traveled, first the Levante and then the Byzantine Empire, further west to Tunis and then back along the Northern coastal cities, only avoiding Genoa. For a few beautiful years they settled down in Malta. And yet the true journey — just as winding, and filled with as many challenges and surprising turns — has been the one towards finding each other.  It’s hard to say what came first in their relationship — trust, affection, lust. They started out killing each other, and then became traveling companions before they had outgrown that habit. The last time Yusuf killed him, was after he had kissed him. And yet it would be years after trusting Nicolò to have his back in a battle before he allowed him to strip Yusuf bare, and allowed himself to come undone beneath him. Now that they’ve found the women, there is a new journey waiting, and Nicolò isn’t sure where it will lead yet. The first night they make camp together, he doesn’t sleep. He’s not worried about his own safety — there’s little anyone can do to him that Nicolò would fear — but he’s not going to leave Yusuf defenseless. He’s not going to let anyone come between them or separate them. Yusuf, ever perceptive, smiles at him knowingly before he presses a soft kiss against Nicolò’s lips, right there in front of their new acquaintances, and then settles himself against Nicolò’s chest, allowing Nicolò to wrap his arms around him and hold him close. The warm weight of him is a comfort; the steady heartbeat echoing between them grounding.  He pulls a blanket up around them, and when he lifts his gaze, he sees that he’s being watched from across the campfire. Dark eyes study him for a long moment, then the Eastern woman starts to smile, and she closes her eyes and curls up against her companion.  “I trust you will be keeping watch,” she says, just loud enough for Nicolò to hear the underlying amusement in her voice. “If only for his sake.” Nicolò doesn’t answer, but as the night proceeds, he contemplates the notion of trust, and how he has earned hers so quickly. It will not take long for Quynh and Andromache to take root in his heart, and he will do anything for them for their own sake. But it won’t be for many decades, to Andromache’s endless exasperation and Quynh’s quiet amusement, that he’ll be willing to trust them with the safety of his heart — or rather the man who firmly holds it in his possession.

1. Are you named after anyone? No... my Mom liked the name. (I hate it btw, and have taken on another in day-to-day life.)

2. When was the last time you cried? The other day, watching "For all mankind" (which is better than I had thought it would be?!)

3. Do you have kids? A daughter.

4. Do you use sarcasm a lot? MEEEEEE???? ^^

5. What sports do you play/have played? I used to ride. Stopped when I got pregnant.

6. What's the first thing you notice about people? Whether they hold eye-contact, maybe?

7. What's your eye color? Dark brown.

8. Scary movies or happy endings? Depends. I don't like torture movies, but I do not like overly saccharine stuff either. Aliens as a prime example for both?! :)

9. Any special talents? Errr.... I used to have a lyrical soprano... wanted to be an opera singer once upon a time.

10. Where were you born? Skipping, sorry.

11. What are your hobbies? Reading, video games, music, vampires. I also read a lot.

A 2023 The Old Guard Rec List

I spent most of 2023 trying to make a dent in my AO3 'to read' list rather than reading new fics, so I know I must've missed some fantastic fics from the year. But here are a few of my favorites posted in 2023 that I did read, in no particular order.

Shackled -- @beepbeepsan T. Canon divergence. Joe and Nicky fight back on the plane.

there'll be feasting in jerusalem next year -- paigian M. In which Nile becomes a city, fights off an interdimensional Lovecraftian horror, and falls in love. Not necessarily in that order.

Malta, 1976 -- dana_norram (@negotiumcrucis) E. A time in Malta. Not THE time in Malta, but one of many. (Featuring Nicky in tiny 70s shorts.)

Overdrive -- @goldheartedsky T. Modern AU. When Booker's abusive wife finds out about his reciprocated feelings for Andy and disappears with the kids, Andy can't sit on the sidelines anymore. (Second in a series)

we can't keep meeting like this -- rupzydaisy (@genyathefirebird) G. Death has many faces and Andromache has one, which makes her easier to recognise over the years as they work for the living and the dead.

1. How many words have you written this year?

39,154 (excluding Galladrabbles, WIPs and the story for the Masquerade).

2. How many works did you publish this year?

Including the story for the Masquerade that will get posted by the end of the week, 15.

3. What work are you most proud of (regardless of kudos/hits)?

Retrograde - a Firstprince AU where they're both immortal and only realise it a century and a half later, when they meet again completely by accident. I just stumbled upon the prompt and I couldn't get it out of my head.

4. What work of yours has the most hits?

Ready for this to be (Firstprince, college AU) - almost 5.7k hits. It probably helps that it was posted back in January 😝

5. What work of yours got more feedback than you expected?

Waiting for Magic - simply because there's no pairing and I wrote it over 3 years ago for what was supposed to be a collab that eventually fell through. It's for The Old Guard, centred on one character and his alternate origin story and I wasn't expecting anyone to even leave a kudos, let alone comment.

6. Favorite title you used.

Either "Watch out for me" or "With our backs against the world" - can't really decide 😅

7. If you use song lyrics, which artist’s songs did you pull from the most?

My go-to has always been Glass Animals but funnily enough, this year there aren't two fics with titles from the same artist 😅

8. Pairing you wrote the most for this year?

Firstprince - I'm in a phase 😜

9. Favorite pairing you wrote for this year?

Yeah, no, not playing favourites. If I write for it, it means I love it.

10. What work was the quickest to write?

A matter of time (The Gentlemen (series), post-canon), my entry for Level Up! Granted, it's only 1.2k words but I remember just breezing through it.

11. What work took you the longest to write?

Probably Swimmin' in my mind (Siena dream) - it's among the longest and it was also part of the Gallavich Gift Exchange, so I paid closer attention to a lot of aspects I normally disregard because I wanted it to be as close to perfect as possible.

12. How many WIPs do you have in your docs for next year?

Four, theoretically, though one of them is just two fragments of dialogue.

13. What’s your longest work of the year?

Swimmin' in my mind (Siena dream), at a whopping 6,649 words 😅

14. What’s your shortest work of the year?

Excluding all Galladrabbles, With our backs against the world, at exactly 900 words.

15. What WIP are you taking into next year with you?

Definitely a Firstprince one-shot that's a sort of sequel for the first story I ever wrote for this pairing and which I'm planning to post for the Hey, Sweetheart event.

16. What’s your most common “Additional Tags” tag?

17. Your favorite character to write this year?

Henry - he's such a fascinating character, made up of a whole slew of contradictions.

18. The character that gave you the most trouble writing this year?

Henry 😅 Despite my ease at slipping into formal and very formal English, his voice felt really intimidating at first and made me second-guess all my sentences and turns of phrase.

19. What’s one pairing you want to explore next year?

I don't know, tbh. The Old Guard 2 is coming out, so there's a high chance I revisit my roots (i.e. Book of Nile and Kaysanova) but honestly, anything might draw my attention enough for me to want to write a story.

20. Which work of yours have you reread the most?

Retrograde - see above 😁 It's part of the triad (together with a Gallavich story and a TOG one).

Suddenly, what's going on here? seems incredibly appropriate.

‘Not in a million years, sweetheart!’ he murmurs and Henry is too tipsy himself to hold back the gasp and the shudder and the way his suddenly-too-dry throat clicks when he swallows.

College AUs - hadn't written any before this year and now I find it very hard to stop because I've completely fallen in love 😅
