Historical Blackbeard definitely had a series of wives and was likely together with the historical Bonnet. In the show, we do get a reference to “dalliances” Ed had with Calico Jack, but the main plot of the show is his relationship with Stede.

What I love about the OFMD story is how Ed is changed even before meeting Stede. Just hearing of his existence, that he’s doing piracy differently, alters him.

We keep hearing from Izzy how the pirate narrative should go:

This Bonnet isn’t worth Ed’s time, indicating Blackbeard wouldn’t normally go after such seeming small-fry.

That if they do go after them, boarding, killing and throwing them to the sharks is normal procedure. And if some of the crew survive to mend the ship, the uszh is to kill them afterwards.

Instead we get Ed saying:

Follow that ship

Invite them aboard

And later…

Don’t terrorise our guests

Followed a few hours later by a frolicking clothes swap.

Stede’s ethos takes effect on Ed immediately. I don’t think Ed ever truly lost hope in the world because the moment he learns of the Gentleman Pirate, Ed begins to feel an unstoppable desire to let the mask slip.
