not to be rude but this is literally the 2025 hungarian production. my 2023 cassandra moment

elisabeth schönbrunn 2023. repeat of the lifeless staging. costume budget has gone even further down but there's now a see-saw in addition to the swing set. nobody is allowed to get cast unless they've already starred in 3+ previous productions. the role of elisabeth is played by a different actress in every scene because it breaks the audience's immersion if the age of the character doesn't match the performer 1-on-1. pyros are used in every scene, most memorably mama wo bist du. the lyrics of kitsch are reworked because in its current form it might negatively impact merch sales... also schatten is now sung by tod and elisabeth<3 adult rudolf only appears to sing the last verse of spiegel because of time constraints as there needs to be time for the new KKOG reprise. instead of the mayerling kiss der tod punches rudolf in the face and goes "this is what you get for bothering my love elisabeth with your cringefail existence lmaoo". der schleier fällt is a wedding scene. thunderous applause, the audience is crying, it's very moving,,,, after the show michael kunze himself walks out to thank the straight community for their money and support. they invite the entire remaining habsburg family on stage and announce that profits will go towards supporting royalist causes worldwide

Max of Mexico was gay or bi?? what?

Hello! Well to be honest it’s not something confirmed. But that he was either gay or bi has been rumored for a long time. I haven’t tracked down (yet) when nor where the rumors originated, but you’ll find it mentioned in some biographies. This is usually used as an explanation as to why he didn’t father any children, because as I mentioned before, it was noted by contemporaries that he and Charlotte literally weren’t sleeping together in Mexico. As their intimacy wasn’t of that much importance before they became emperor and empress we can’t know for how long that had been the case - by the early 1860s Max seemed to believe that he wasn’t going to have children. So either they had already tried to concieve and it didn’t work, or they weren’t trying at all.

Other than that, Max in general seemed to have preferred the company of other men; so while rumors about his suppossed affairs are usually with nameless women (and I could go on a tangent about how some of these just read like sexist and racist “Latin American women are more sexual and available to European men” crap), the gay rumors are with his male subordinates. And well he was in the Navy - a very famous homosocial space. Does that make him gay or bi? As always with these cases, we can’t know for certain about how he might have felt about his sexuality as he didn’t write it down, or how he would’ve identified himself had the indentity labels we have now been available to him. Nobody forced him to marry Charlotte and I do think he loved her, but it’s also true that getting married was simply expected of an archduke. He wanted Ludwig Viktor to marry too, for instance - something Franz Josef himself never seems to have expected from his younger brother.
