A little sample of just how quick stuff escalates for Tim:
Tumblr media
Tim's like "ah yes I shall just go to Paris to train" and then tries to help someone, then finds another person to help, gets overwhelmed and ends up learning from a deadly assassin and an undercover officer(?) instead of the marital arts master he was supposed to train under.
Oh also he went from Paris to Hong Kong on a weird road trip with said assassin and officer. How fun.

During an argument
Jason: Oh yeah? Well, atleast I'm not a cop!
Dick: Atleast I'm not a priest in another universe!
Jason: Atleast I'm not a vampire king in another!
Tim: Atleast none of you is Evil Gun Batman!
Jason and Dick:
Tim: So, Shut Up.

Ugh the way fanon Jason calling Tim replacement v.s. canon Jason calling Tim pretender flattens Jason's motivations and the whole Jason and Tim relationship. 'Replacement' directs all of Jason's anger to Bruce. It makes Tim and Jason allies in victimhood. 'Here is this callous man that views us as interchangeable, can't you see that we're nothing to him?' 'Pretender' though... that holds Tim accountable for his role in making Jason's death meaningless. 'You saw everything I was, all that I gave, and you used it as a springboard to become what I should have been' is a lot more complex, and a lot more thematically accurate to Jason's whole deal. It's a larger gap for the characters to bridge, especially when Tim is coming from the perspective that his becoming Robin was not only right, it was necessary.

The batkids think the alias "Nightwing" is a reference to Batman, being the bat the flying creature of the night. Clark is very much offended when he hears about this.

When I say knowledge of the context is useful to analyse comics, what I mean is that the lazarus pit being a potential factor for Jason's worst behaviour was introduced in Lost Days: we see the classic temporary outburst at the beginning, and then I think the comic is pretty clear on condemning Talia's initial diagnosis of "the pit made him a psychopathic monster", both to us seeing him save all these people and doing his own vigilantism, and to Talia when she's like "you're learning". I've mentioned before how lost days introduces its own explanation for UTH!Jason (as much as I dislike it), so we know that Pit Madness isn't the preferred explanation for his behaviour in UTH and Winick's Jason in general. But then, we also see Ra's condemning Talia's actions by going "perhaps not today perhaps not now but eventually he's going to go crazy." Seems like we're getting a lot of leeway here isn't it? (Even more than we had in bop with Dixon's cautiously vague explanation of the pit). Seems like an awfully convenient way to explain any moment of Jason behaving horribly in away that doesn't fit the parameters of Winick's characterization. Note also that Lost Days is imo the best (so far) pre-n52 story at creating empathy towards Jason since we see him look his actual age, we see how deeply hurt he was and for how long we see him have a traumatic flashback we see him cry we see him sit on a chair and not touch the ground we see him try his best and save people and show empathy and discernment and see that he has a moral conduct other than "anarchic killing"...
Anyway, check that out:

Now this is what I call damage control. You absolutely insist in maintaining some of the worst runs in the history of the characters into your version of canon (which you claim is the real valid canon that everyone should accept) despite its apparent erasure from mainline? Okay sure understandable we all have different tastes in comics and what we think is important for a character's identity. Fine. Why then did Jason make any of the choices he made in those terrible stories? (Including that terrible clothing choice)?
He was pit mad. That's the canon explanation. He literally wasn't himself. He wasn't fundamentally inherently and absolutely evil, he wasn't crazy evil, he was high on magic gatorade.
I'd expect Winick to have done that more to preserve and mitigate the character assassination of the complex/nuanced villain he created than out of a sudden shift in stance on psychophobia, but I'm still grateful for it. Anyway, pit madness is real, and cptsd doesn't make you shoot children.

I'd like to imagine Tim Drake just going around killing the people who've hurt him and his family (who are not also his family)

Tim I noticed a lot of indigenous patches on your jacket, are you Native?
Idk what my dad was 'cause I never knew him, but yeah my mom is (or... Was.. I guess..) Muscogee, the tribe native to the part of Alabama I'm in.
If I remember correctly she came to Alabama from Oklahoma (where a lot of Natives were displaced to in the 1800s) to "get back to her roots."
But yknow, I was separated from her in childhood (which tbh is upsettingly common for Native families) and I was raised in a very white very Catholic asylum so I'm not as connected to the culture as I'd like to be.

#obviously i am Thrilled with all the buddie goodness we got this ep#but one thing about this whole eddie/chris storyline that is driving me absolutely UP THE WALLS#is that there has just been absolutely Zero realistic communication about any of it from the audience's perspective#we don't hear anything about logistics in the moments where chris is actually leaving#(about how long he'll be gone for/if it's just for the summer/etc etc)#which whatever fine tim wanted it to be dramatic#but still in season 8 we don't know if there's been any discussion with chris OR helena and ramon about when/if he should be coming home#like you can infer if you want that the diaz parents have no intention of giving up chris and this was the plan all along#but tbh even that is largely extrapolation on the fandom's part bc they haven't told us anything!!!!!!#two facetimes and three conversations eddie's had with people that Aren't his parents is not enough!!!!#and i know it's the Eddie Diaz Routine(tm) to jump to the most extreme possible conclusion re him moving back to el paso#but WHY have we gotten no indication at all that he's attempted to talk this out with chris at some point in the last 5 months???????????#the dust settled a long time ago and eddie has Always been so good at talking to chris even when it's a difficult subject#i refuse to believe we're in last resort territory i'm sorry askdfjhsa#i want to write something about it but there's so much to tackle i don't even know where to start!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!#anyway yes i know i was the one pointing out last week that storylines 8 seasons in are not going to be top notch but that doesn't negate#my frustration aksdjfhsih#tbd

I will scream at every non-romantic post I see about these guys. Writers be not afraid. I will love their non-romance fics. I'll blow up your coment section all alone if I have to. I will find you. Artists be not afraid. I will reach tag limit on your artpiece. If I see it at least. And if I don't, I will eventually. Or I'll try. Or @me so I won't fail you.

Tim. Come here. We need to talk. So Tommy and Buck are comfortable with each other. You know what we need?
Tommy: "I didn't want to ask before but... you and Eddie."
Buck, trying to fit an entire toast in his mouth: "Huh? Wa?"
Tommy, blinded by his love for this sweet clown: "You're pretty close, right?"
Buck, forcing the toast down and already regretting doing this: "Yeah, he's my best friend. Like a brother, you know?"
Tommy, pretty impressed by Buck's mouth capacity (he knows, though): "Friends, brothers... nothing more? You're on his will."
Buck, making a face. The toast was definitely a bad idea: "We're family, yeah. But you knew that."
Tommy, watching Buck gulp down his tall glass of orange juice: "You told me, yes."
Buck, feeling full, too full: "You-You're not jealous, right?"
Tommy, now wondering if he's dating Shrek: "No. I'm just curious. He's a cute guy, so maybe, you know..."
Buck, stretching his legs in hope of giving some room to his stomach: "Oh. You're asking if there was something between us. Like something. Well. Can't say I didn't feel anything at first. I-I mean, he's obviously a handsome man, right? But then... I don't know. Everything felt so right with things as they were. I love our friendship. Even more now that... you know."
Buck is already folding another toast but Tommy stops him.
Tommy: "Okay, that's enough. Let's find something else to put in your mouth, hm?"
Buck, a stupid smile on his face: "O-Okay."

tim "i'm not trying to be romantic" → gets his girlfriend a 1st place trophy before she even takes the detectives exam because he believes in her so much, and then writing in a little '7' next to it after she notified him that she didn't do as well as she had hoped SEEMS PRETTY FUCKING ROMANTIC TO ME.

i can't believe i didn't realize that post was actually seething at Steph underneath it all, upon rereading it is was obvious. the absolute irony of being a tim drake fan and snarking about Steph being a middle class white girl commuting from the suburbs to the inner city to pick fights for fun, I guess that's only okay if you're actually a very rich white guy commuting from your manor or swanky neighborhood (or expensive private boarding school) to the inner city to pick fights for fun lmao.

One of the things I love about tma is the exploration of the illusion of freewill for Jon. His path was set, ever since he was a kid, ever since his encounter with A Guest For Mr Spider, he was chosen by Elias, not because he was special but because he was There. He tries to fight it pretty much every step of the way. He believes he has the power to change things, despite knowing deep down that he doesn't. And yet it ends how it ends. And I just. It echoes so beautifully into cPTSD and childhood trauma. We're marked from a young age, we're given the illusion of free will, that it was our fault that we got chosen to be hurt like that and therefore we couldve done something different to have stopped it from happening. The idea that we believed if we prayed hard enough, was a good enough person, avoided doing certain things, then it wouldnt have happened. Which then turns to the realisation that we didn't get chosen to be hurt because of some specific reason, we were just There. We are led to believe that due to this event or circumstance, our life has been set for us, one of misery and loneliness and pain. And although tma is a tragedy and it therefore ends tragically, which is unfortunately the reality for some of us, it also shows us that things were important along the way. Just as Jon is loved by Martin (and the fandom), we also have the chance to be loved. Just as Jon's coworkers sing hin happy birthday and Tim does finger guns at Martin and Georgie goes out to eat Hungarian food, we'll have little moments of peace. They mattered. And so do we.
