okay i talked to @anatomyofacowboy about this yesterday and i need to add some thought.

the only sibling relationships we really see on the show other than cora and derek are ethan and aiden and brett and lori.

once ethan and aiden align themselves with the mccall pack and by default the hale pack at the end of 3a jennifer almost kills them and severs the connection between them that allows them to transform together. and then once they're arguably in the pack by the end of 3b aiden dies. the narrative only allows one sibling within the hale pack legacy that transferred to the mccall pack to live.

now brett and lori were only ever tangibly connected to the mccall pack so they aren't affected by this, they're allowed to both be alive and happy at the same time. and once they do die they die as they lived. together.

and to go back to derek and cora. cora almost dies and derek has to sacrifice his alpha powers to keep her alive. the only way for her to be safe in the long run is by her escaping the story and going back to south america.

it's also interesting to look at derek's pack. you can argue that erica, boyd and isaac serve as kind of siblings in the story so obviously only one of them was allowed to survive in the long run.

when the hale house burned down it cemented this tragic fate onto the hale pack as a whole which then transferred down onto the mccall pack due to scott taking over as alpha after derek and him being turned by peter. and it's so interesting to see how it plays out in the show.

saw a gifset and now i'm thinking about how teen wolf is a show about only children one bad decision away from being orphans and littered with the corpses of dead parents and siblings.

like i think about derek sometimes and how he's the middle child of three only to be a brother without either of his sisters for the first two seasons. how cora being alive when he spent six years believing she was dead changed him profoundly.

or how isaac's brother died when he was young and boyd's little sister died.

that malia kept her little sister's baby doll in her coyote den for eight years. that even peter is a little brother without his older sister.

that even chris argent is an older brother who lost his sister first to their father's manipulations and than to her own madness.

theo's original sin is killing his sister but she perversely lives on inside him due to him having her heart. mason absorbed his twin in utero. hayden leaves beacon hills to keep her sister safe. scott and stiles adopt each other as brothers.

honestly, i am so deep into magical girl fandoms that i forget their focus on female characters and sapphic ships isn't the norm in every fandom. like i was just watching this video because i needed some background noise while i drew

and i was so blown away by how male centered all the fandoms featured here are. m/m ships are the front and centre while f/f ships and female characters are pushed to the back. even in fandoms with a more platonic/family oriented focus, the relationships between male characters always take precedence over those of female characters. and you can't tell me "well, the female characters in x media just aren't well written" because male characters can be worse written and fandoms will take what little personality they've been given and make so many aus, hcs, fanart, fanfics etc. bbc sherlock fandom gave a male character who never even fucking appeared in the show a whole personality, backstory, characterization etc but never bothered to do the same with the female characters they claim were poorly written.

and honestly, its so sad. because there's so many good female oriented media and f/f ships out there but they just won't get the attention that male oriented media gets because people always need a man in everything. you can use the excuse of the female characters being poorly written all you want but even in media where they ARE well written, they get pushed aside in favour of men.

and god forbid you call this out, especially if you're a lesbian, you'll be accused of being homophobic and hating all mlm. i've seen it happen so many times on twitter. just because someone criticizes how mlm always gets precedence over wlw, doesn't mean they hate mlm. mlm rep is important but it sucks how its always given preference over wlw just because people prefer following men's stories than women's stories.

Teen Wolf's Canaan

Written for @teenwolf-meta‘s Meta May Monday theme: place.

in the sixth episode of the sixth season scott, lydia and malia go to canaan, a place which has become a ghost town after the wild hunt came through in the 80s with only one inhabitant still there. there are two major references being made in this episode, the first being that to the both biblical and real bronze age location of canaan and the second being to the ballad lenore by bürger.

in genesis 9:25 noah curses canaan, the son of ham, that he and all of his descendants, the canaanites, will be servants for the rest of time. the conquest of canaan in the book of joshua as well as the curse of canaan are mirrored in the episode with the ghost riders' attack on the town and is further expanded on when, at the end of the episode lydia explains that the people taken by the wild hunt become ghost riders themselves, effectively making them servants of the hunt.

the only person left behind by the riders is a woman named lenore. her name draws the viewer back to the 1774 ballad of the same name, in which a ghostly rider comes to a woman in the disguise of her dead lover and takes her on a ride. the poem culminates when lenore realizes that the rider is indeed death himself come for her. teen wolf's lenore as all other banshees has a close connection to death and the dead, for her the spectral entity shown to her is not her deceased lover but instead it is her son who drowned as a child. bürger's lenore dies at the end of the poem, where teen wolf's lenore decided to stay in canaan with the apparition of her dead son, a kind of death in itself.

I MEAN I legit have seen the most questionable creatures, cranks, animagus, werewolves, etc and their human partner will still be like "you're the most beautiful person I have ever seen in my life" AKAJAJAJJAJAJAJ
