Aizawa Shouta & Shinsou Hitoshi Father-Son Dynamic Big Recomendation Fic List for starters and not
Hi everyone! After quite a long time, I finally post my Recommendation Fic List (the crowning glory of my stay in the MHA fandom) of Aizawa and Shinsou Father-Son Dynamic.
I always start reading fanfiction before I even finished read the original, what does that says about me?
I became familiar with a fairly common theory that Shinsou Hitoshi is an orphan with a rather dread past, which, of course, activated a huge curiosity in me. I tried to analyze the trend, and I will say that it's quite clear: People were infected with the idea, where abused Hitoshi was somehow saved by Aizawa. And so was I. I've read for almost hundread of any combinations of this trend and NOW I finally ready to present my Fic List.
Attention. I will attach UNFINISHED fanfics, but which actively (or not so) updated, because they are masterpieces.
WARNING! I do not attach stories which contain:
ships (except Erasermic and 2-3 ShinKami but they are not MAIN)
alpha/beta/omega thing
too fluffy and too family-oriented fics (there will be ones, but I don't want to make them a centre of my list
I cut Rec List on different genre sections (read: dynamics) and add fanfics from the most angst ones to fluffy ones so you can easily pick what you like most ;)
So, let's start!
fandomofhappiness's personal top
You Want It Darker by Ms_Chunks Genres: Shinsou Has Family, Gore and Murder, Detective, Mentor and Parental Aizawa Status: FINISHED (533,808 words) foh's comment: Highly interesting! Shinsou here is not represented as perfect kid or downtrodden teenager, he is the way I liked him in anime and manga: he bites, hisses, snaps, makes sarcastic jokes and does not allow anyone hurt him. Aizawa and Shinsou very slowly gain trust from each other, but that makes their relationship seem sincere, and not caricatured. Read for the detective, the non-orthodox view of the Hitoshi family and Erasermic. READ THE TAGS and be aware!
Fundamental Theorem of Heroics by NightowlRobin Genres: Foster Kid Shinsou, Vigilante Shinsou, Heavy Angst, Parental Aizawa Status: UNFINISHED but updates weekly (more 700k words) foh's comment: Truly FUNDAMENTAL work of all Shinsou Hitoshi stories on ao3. I'd so like to confess my true respect and love to the NightowlRobin for their most mind-blowing plot and detailising. (You will probably meet Aizawa only after 10 chapters. And it will take even longer until Hitoshi and him properly meet.) This is an epochal work that will make you believe in Hitoshi's true character and make you cry of his story because it's really brutal. I think this is the favourite work of everyone who liked Shinsou with all their hearts.
To Turn A Man Into A Stone by tanli Genres: Foster Kid Shinsou, Angst, Mentor Aizawa Status: FINISHED (15,128 words) foh's: comment: Even months after I read this work, I look back on it and think: the author did an 11/10 job. Just so you understand: this is the best example of how I see the relationship between Aizawa and Shinsou. It is the apotheosis of sincerity and affection. It is a test of will, deep introspection and acceptance. It performed so well that it seemed to me that the author wrote a chapter for the manga. Damn, the author did a lot better than the mangaka. If the previous two works were not so high-quality and grandiose, I would've put this one at the very top of my list.
If Lies Had A Flavor by scooter3scooter Genres: Foster Kid Shinsou, Erasermic Adopt Shinsou, Heavy Angst and Hurt/Comfort, Eating Disorders Status: FINISHED (10,003 words) foh's comment: Perhaps one of the many angst works written by scooter3scooter, which I have reread more than once or even twice. This work is special to me, because I have never seen such an interesting look at the consequences of Shinsou's stay in an orphanage. Complex and emotional work. It is truly an honour to get acquainted with such a vast problem of humanity as eating disorder through this fanfic.
crybaby by Brachydios Genres: Foster Kid Shinsou, Erasermic Help Shinsou, Heavy Angst & Eventual Comfort, Canon Divergence Status: FINISHED (51,219 words) foh's comment: I've read this work more times than I can remember. Brachydios came into my life with this incredible work and tore me apart from the inside. I believe in every detail they describe, every character move is justified. I want to sympathize with Shinsou over and over again. One of the best Quirk-Shenanigans trope that has brought 1017 people to tears - be the next one. The performance is 100 of 10.
How It Goes by Ibelieveinahappilyeverafter Genres: Foster Kid Shinsou, Erasermic Adopt Shinsou, Heavy Angst & Eventual Comfort Status: FINISHED (20,021 words) foh's comment: This is one of the best written Foster Kid Shinsou stories ever. Hitoshi's adaptation, his thoughts and feelings, his panic, his fear of going back to the orphanage are described in a deep sincere way here. It's a heartbreaking story about the fear of punishment, taking consenquences and family. It was very personal for me and I hope you get a lot emotions after reading it.
Faith by slightlycrunchy Genres: Mentor and Parental Aizawa, Anxious Shinsou, Hurt/Comfort, School Situation Status: FINISHED (2,651 words) foh's comment: This work is also quite personal choice of mine. I wouldn't say it's grandiose, but it's very emotional for me. For the kid who worries about grades all their life, who is afraid to make a mistake, who is afraid to lose everything because of one mistake and who doesn't know how to accept their failures. I ask you to read this if my words resonate in your soul. This is the truth that we all need to hear.
Absolute Tops
Point Blank by Cobbiest foh's rec: an interesting, intriguing and beautifully written Shinsou's journey to become a part of Erasermic Family (and hero)
Deathworlders to the extreme! by AquaStarDark foh's rec: that's the funniest, most captivating and rocking people-are-space-orcs thing that I've read, really worths reading
I Would Understand by deafmic foh's rec: that is the first things first to read if you're new here, but tnh I wasn't ready for this work and dropped it once or twice before I finally made it and read it, it's really really good, but I wouldn't recommended as first-to-read.
Back to the Nest by Mags_Pie foh's rec: such a sweet thing about children and their parents. I was smiling so much.
Everything is different (since you've been around) by Plasmapause foh's rec: and THIS is how I see the best written relationship between Shinsou & Aizawa AND Shinsou & Yamada, they're building trust and becoming family very slowly BUT you really believe in these life situations that happen to Hitoshi, it is very sincere and touchy work.
It's not always easy. by ethgri foh's rec: and THIS is the HEAVIEST work I've read and really recommend it. The emotions are real and naked, I practically felt the same pain. Please be ready for heart journey, this is a brutal masterpiece.
Herding Cats by Robbirdthe8th (FictionalFeather) foh's rec: the COOLEST detective wotk, have nothing to say - just read it.
Margay by Oceanbreeze7 foh's rec: one of best ever written Shinsou.
QueNouilleCroustillante (the author of AUs that you won't forget: you may know theirs Bright Stars, but I beg you to read all of their works)
deafmic (you guys do know deafmic, that's deafmic's section for Aizawa and Shinsou, it's all too fucking good)

So this section I prefer to divide in two subsections:
fanfics where Shinsou is heavely traumatised and learns how to handle it with Eraser(-mic) help (Section A)
fanfics where Shinsou traumatises world around him and still learns how to handle it (Section B)
P.S.: section B comes first, because I love how authors perform Shinsou. They captured his audacity, intelligence and rebelliousness, he's learning from his traumas but does it shitty, and that is really interesting.
Family Dynamics Section B:

I felt it was a difficult decision to include this here, as it is an incredibly complex topic and also incredibly important. This work is written with such respect and love, with such sensitivity, I cannot even begin to express it in words. Please, if this topic is disturbing and triggering to you, please be careful to read it.)
This concludes my top list. I finished reading about two months ago and plan to return soon and see what new and good is being written along this Father-Son trope. If you have any other cool works that are not presented here and you want to share them, send them into comments. I would be very glad! Thank you for attention!

Just wait, I think someone will write about it. Just make popcorn and wait.
Absolut going insane about the fact in no part of the canon plot Ginho could have healed each other. Imagine smol smiley freshly divorced S1 Gi-Hun meeting pre-game widowed In-Ho, broken and grieving.
Instead of making each other worse they could gave made each other better.
Or could have ended in the games regardless and ended up as the couple in S1.
Pick your poison I guess.

You know, the division of courses in UA is similar to ponies in MLP.
The Hero Course is like alicorns (saviors and protectors, getting honour and glory almost for nothing),
the Support Course is like Pegasus (super useful guys, a lot depends on their help), the
Management Course is like unicorns (strong managers, they may not be understood, but still fellows rely heavily on them).
And the GENERAL EDUCATION Course is LIKE FUCKING Earth ponies. Fuck knows what they are needed for, but they exist.

The Shinsous
I keep on making more content about my headcanon Shinsou Hitoshi's parents and wanted to share some sketches and more lore so follow me on 'More'.
Facts about Shinsou Family:
Age gap between Utami and Kazuro is 6 years.
Kazuro's parents were domineering and strict people and came from a long line of mathematicians. All his life, he was compared to his elder sister Mikuru, who to achieved a prestigious job and a rich life thanks to her Quirk, Accurate Outlook. They demanded that he get a lucrative and decent job and a good wife. When Kazuro introduced Utami to his family, they told him to choose between them and his fiancee. He parted his ways with parents forever, cut off all ties and married the woman he loved.
Mikuru, Kazuro's sister, loved Kazuro much more than their parents and practically raised him herself. She saw how hard it was for him to have social relationships, change schools, and the constant nagging of their parents. Mikuru was the first to see signs of depression in her brother and took him out of the dorms and first time gave him money for medicines when he graduated.
Utami's life wasn't very happy. Her mother raised her on her own in a small village. Almost all entertainment, hobbies, sports and clubs were forbidden to her because of her Quirk. There were even more problems at school after she became a teenager. Some of her ex-boyfriends accused her of debauchery and even coercion because of the Siren Call. When she grew up, she and her mother moved to a bigger city and she enrolled in the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine.
When Hitoshi was 5 years old, Utami was attacked. She was picking him up from daycare when one of the inadequate parents accused her of seducing their spouse and stabbed her in the back. Hitoshi screamed and beat the attacker until they responded and the boy used Brainwashing to save his mother. After the attack, Kazuro and Utami quit their jobs, took Hitoshi and moved to another place to start a new life.
They have two rescued cats living at home.
Hitoshi's grandmother, Miryoku Yukari (Utami's mother), was delighted with Hitoshi's birth and when Shinsous came to her she looked after him.
Speedpaint of my tired little couple! Do people nowadays call it speedpaint? I don't know... I recorded my first speedpaint when I was 12 years old and dropped it on YouTube.
Anyway, I wanted to show their tenderness through this hug-almost-making-out. They are both extremely exhausted every day and hardly find some time for each other.

Shinsou Hitoshi's Parents (fandomofhappiness' headcanon)
So, I've been preparing this material and fanart for the last two months and I'm finally happy to share it with you. I've long dreamed of creating a family for Hitoshi (that weren't complete scumbags, but the most ordinary parents, like most MHA students have). So let's begin! (next part is here)
"They look like the most ordinary family, one of dozens that I've met before. And yet… There is something distinctly off about them. Perhaps, it's a tired hollow smile of a mother or a father's sickly features that indicate eternal weariness. There is something tragic that explains their son's continuous hostility to the world around him" (Aizawa Shouta, "Not Real Parent-Teacher Meeting").
"Your parents have been struggling all their lives trying to prove to the society that they deserve to be a part of it, Hitoshi. Give them a break sometimes, bitter kitten" (Shinsou Mikuru, "Meet My Aunt, Shinsou Mikuru")
Shinsou Utami
Shinsou Utami (Miryoku Utami before marriage) is Shinsou Hitoshi's mother and Shinsou Kazuro's wife. Utami is a woman with wild indigo-colored hair that flutters in the air, mimicking the underwater movements whenever she turns her head, and bright yellow eyes. She has pale pink skin and pointed ears. Utami enjoys wearing various jewelry, most often seen wearing nautical-themed earrings. When her Quirk, the Siren Call, activates, the whites of her eyes darken and her pupils lose their normal human shape and glow brightly.
Shinsou Utami is a peculiar and charming woman. At work, she is extremely focused and still very compassionate. Despite her not very happy childhood, she hasn't lost her slightly childish naivety, so sometimes during conversation, she can seem a little dreamy and light-hearted. One of the side effects of her quirk is External Charm. Even without using the quirk, people are drawn to her unusual and beautiful appearance, but this effect is short-lived.
Utami works at her mother's private vet clinic and also helps at animal shelter, providing free medical care for strays. Since she was little girl, she loved to sing, that is why Shinsous' house is always filled with quiet melodies when Utami cooks, takes care of animals or does paperwork. Moreover, she oftenly performs for public and charitable organizations. She doesn't like to talk about her Quirk and never uses it outside. However, she is fine to use it on her eternally sleepless husband, Kazuro.
Utami loves her only son, Hitoshi, with all her heart. She always tried to give him a better childhood, allowing him to participate in any hobbies and after-school activities despite all the complications that came with their Quirks. From her son's earliest years, she knew he wanted to be a hero. Although she and her husband had never forbidden him to dream about it or talk about it, she held out hope that he'd outgrow this desire and follow either hers steps, with his love of animals, or his father's because of his mathematical mindset. She wasn't afraid that he wouldn't be able to find a use for his Quirk, but the fact that there were many bright and attacking Quirks in the world that her son couldn't escape. Therefore, when Aizawa Shouta came to Shinsous for a parent-teacher meeting, she was curious to find out about the underground hero, even though she couldn't fully believe that someone really wanted to help her family.
Utami's Quirk, Siren Call, allows her to take control of men's minds the moment they hear her singing. To give an order, Utami must sing continuously, while putting her instructions into the song. The Quirk wears off when she stops singing.
Shinsou Kazuro
Shinsou Kazuro is Shinsou Hitoshi's father and Shinsou Utami's husband.
Kazuro is a tall and skinny man with dirty-blond unruly and spiky hair. He has deep blue eyes with white pupils. His whole face looks haggard and sickly, which sometimes makes him look older than his years. His cheekbones are prominent and there are large dark bags under his eyes. He prefers to wear baggy or oversized clothes to hide his thinness. He also constantly wears tinted glasses for vision, in which one of the lenses is cracked. When he uses his Quirk his pupils start to glow.
Kazuro is a reserved and quiet person. Straightforward and honest, but don't speaks much out loud. He's not a very sociable person, and rarely lets anyone touch him. This is partly due to his hypersensitive skin that remains as symptom of taking medications. He is prone to a infrequent depressive episodes. At the age of nineteen, he was diagnosed with clinical depression, which he struggles with for most of his life with medication and doctor visits. He works as a professor of mathematical statistics and probability theory at the university. He also provides private consultations for various enterprises, including military, rocket and architectural. At the same time, he secretly despises any economic calculations. He doesn't really like his job, as he has to deal with a lot of young people every day. Due to his Quirk and poor eyesight, he has headaches that lead to partial or complete loss of sleep. He often askes his wife to use her Siren Call to fall asleep.
With the birth of Hitoshi, Kazuro's life has changed a lot for the better. The birth of his son seemed to have awakened him, there were fewer severe depressive episodes, he plunged headlong into caring for his wife and son, taking a family leave at the university. He quit smoking and fiercely followed the doctor's instructions.
He is ashamed of his illness, which, as he thinks, hinders his family. Despite all his efforts, during Hitoshi's growing up, episodes happened, and he was physically unable to help his wife with care of his child. He supported his son when he failed the Hero Course exam. And although neither he nor Utami knew what Hitoshi had planned with the Sports Festival, he was proud to see his son on television.
Kazuro's Quirk, Optimal Output, helps him calculate the most optimal solution to any mathematical, logical, probabilistic problem. He needs to receive the input data, then he processes it using his Quirk, and identifies the best result from several options.
This is it for now. I have more information and art on them, and I prepare the next post soon. Hope you like them as much as I already love this family. If you have any questions you are very welcome to ask! :)

It seems to me that Horikoshi just made Aizawa too ‘i-don’t-need-friends’ and ‘I-didn’t-ask-for-your-help’. Like if Horikoshi settled this trait of him not-trusting-people, not-getting-along into a plot drive Horikoshi could create a good side storyline about accepting other’s people care and to learn how to express care for others in return. But in manga and anime he doesn’t show any empathy towards his closest friend — Hizashi. Hizashi is trying but he brushes off the fact that HIS close one can JUST NOT CARE ABOUT HIM. That’s so impossible and so unbelievable to him. Because! The power of friendship. Friends create agencies and fight together. But for Aizawa firsthand it was not the same. He didn’t know how to handle friendship or that he had to give something in return. And if during main story HE LEARNT how to do it his image would be better. But he is just a protective figure for Deku, Shinsou and other students.
I don't think a lot of Aizawa stans realize or care about how all-take-and-no-give his relationships with Mic and Midnight are.
I read somewhere that Mic and Oboro were friends longer than either of them had known Aizawa, and Aizawa's over here acting like only he lost him. Mic canonically put his own grief on the back burner to be there for Aizawa, and how is he thanked? By constantly being told to shut up and being belittled.
Midnight (maybe?) gave Aizawa the teaching position at UA to help with his grief. Now, she shouldn't have done that, especially since Aizawa had made it clear that he didn't want to teach, but he could have put his foot down and not taken the position! Instead, he makes an ass of himself to everyone around him - his students in particular. In a setting where common sense exists, this would give Midnight a bad look, but you know Aizawa doesn't care about that. He doesn't even seem to care that Midnight DIED, though that's mostly due to her death being purely for shock value 🙄.
Again, in a setting where common sense exists, Mic and Midnight would have called him out on his bullshit a long time ago and probably would have asked themselves, "why are we still friends with this guy?" It's especially upsetting, since he's compared to Kakashi so much. Kakashi has plenty of his own issues, but he's way more of a genuine friend to Guy than Aizawa supposedly is to Mic and Midnight.
Hi @nutzgunray-lvt 👋
Iam not sure if it is canon that present mic and oboro have been friends for a longer time but if it is thats not a good look on aizawa.
From the little we see of the rooftop squads friendship a lot of it does consist of present mic and midnight giving to aizawa than aizawa giving to either of the two.
For example, present mic was there for Eraserhead after the first war arc and present mic was also there for eraser after the usj arc. Midnight did recommend and nudge aizawa into becoming a teacher at UA and in the vigilantes manga it was thanks to her that oboro, mic and aizawa got an internship at a hero agency.
However, this begs the question what does aizawa do for his friends?
Nothing. (Or well canon doesn't show us that he does anything. Do correct me if Iam wrong of course)
Now sure you can definitely point fingers at horikoshi and say that he simply didn't actively include present mic and midnight in his story and that they were mainly there to prop up or almost be tools for aizawa and his development and to that I do agree but it doesn't change the fact that this is the dynamic that canon seems to establish between these characters.
I suppose you're talking about this scene when aizawa interrupts present mic telling him that midnight died and also present mic expressing his grief.
Now I won't deny that this is incredibly rude on aizawas part and that if aizawa were to listen and offer support it would at least show that he does give back to his friends but I suppose horikoshi thought it would be more important to give us "dadzawa". Personally, I do believe that there could of been a balance that we could of indeed received present mic expressing his feelings and aizawa offering support while having them talk and debrief about the entire situation yet we didn't get that.
I have seen the rebuttal that aizawa only did this because he didn't want to hear that midnight died and that he was also burying his emotions but I do suppose that's up to interpretation. My main problem is that midnight's death doesn't get brought up again after this moment between this duo/trio (if they count kurogiri).
In the end even after kurogiri dies due to bakugo it all feels empty and it's not properly talked about between mic and eraser who witnessed this moment.
I think that the kurogiri/oboro reveal really could of shown us more of all the characters sides. It could of shown us then caring and supporting eachother and also seeking comfort in eachother. There were many moments where we could of seen aizawa comfort or give to his friends but we don't and I really don't think that's supposed to be intentional writing from horikoshi.
