Consent! What is it and what does it look like? There are many aspects to giving consent, it's not just about saying "yes", so why not use the acronym 'FRIES' to remind yourself of all the things to consider when giving or asking for consent.

F - Consent is Freely given: you should never pressure, coerce or force someone into saying yes to something, this is not consent. You must respect when someone says no. You should feel confident and happy when you consent to any activity with your partner(s).

R - Consent is reversible: it is okay to consent to something and then change your mind, if you're not comfortable, say so and ask to stop. If your partner changes their mind on something you should respect their choice, and if they are willing, have a conversation about their decision.

I - Consent is informed: you should know what exactly you are consenting to and your partner(s) should too. It's good to discuss specifics beforehand and what you're both comfortable with.

E - Consent is enthusiastic: when someone is giving consent consider their tone and body language. Do they sound happy, upbeat and are they being proactive? Or do they sound hesitant, reluctant or closed-off?

S - Consent is specific: when someone says yes to one activity, it does not mean they consent to other activities. If someone has consented to something in the past, it does not mean that they have consented to doing that activity again in the future, you need renewed consent.

Danny wasn’t thrilled with the whole ghost king bs. So he just doesn’t do it. The realm was just fine without pariah. Someone else can deal with the paperwork.

Rather then ignore the summons. The new king has one of three teenagers deal with the problem. A goth armed with a wrist laser and brass knuckles, a guy with apparently a pda, and then the orange haired one with a flipping bat.

Now he had to summon the king and figure out what’s up.

and ed’s face breaks out into the most relieved, beautiful smile, and there’s this very dreamy sequence of them breathing each other’s names and running to each other. they of course hug each other tightly, maybe even kiss, before ed murmurs something like, “was worried for a second. thought i’d lost you.”

only for stede to go “oh, no. you’ll never ever lose me.”

...and then ed wakes up in the gutted darkness of the captain’s quarters. alone.

‘You Wear Fine Things Well’ is so important. I should imagine Ed has had a lot of sexual attention over the years during his time in piracy. Maybe the Blackbeard persona has kept intimacy at arms length, but sexual objectification exists; only that very evening has Ed been depersonalised and subjected to exoticism by the French Aristos. Stede’s interaction with Ed here is something else entirely.

Stede does not define Ed as exotic. He doesn’t objectify him by his outward appearance. He speaks directly to his personhood with a genuine compliment, stating that Ed has the sophistication, inner character, and bearing to carry off ‘fine things’.

Ed might feel seduced, but Stede is not trying to seduce. There is no motive behind the action and comment other than sincere kindness. And in that moment, Ed is transformed, forever.

As a person of mixed-heritage, this scene was life-changing for me.
