I cannot possibly explain the love my FIL has for Whole Foods. He takes trips to Whole Foods three times a week. He delights in browsing the aisles and reading every label so he can find food with no sugars or fats or flavor. When he dies heaven will appear unto him as a Whole Foods.

For this trip he requested one day my beloved make dinner and they agreed. We both spent all day in the kitchen. I ran to the farmers market for fresh berries and even picked some from my mothers farm. I mixed up batter while my beloved boiled chickpeas.

My beloved marinated meat and roasted eggplant. They made a trip to the store for supplies. We traded the oven between us as the eggplant came out my shortcake went in. They blitzed up hummus and baba ghanoush with special servings free of spices for step-MIL. Special vinaigrette was produced for the salad. Later, kebabs of chicken and veggies went into the oven and then I whipped up my own cream.

We descended upon their hotel with three bags of food containers, laden like packmules from the fruits of our labors. Trays of kebabs and shortcake were carefully transported, bowls of dips and salads, pita bread and dressing the only premade stuff brought along, all the utensils, plates, bowls.

We laid out a feast of love that had taken all day to produce. They both praised the food to our relief but what made FIL pause was seeing the Whole Foods label on the dressing we’d brought. In a touched voice he said, “You went to Whole Foods for me? That’s so nice. I love it there.”

It took about half an hour before the smell of breakfast was rich enough to wake Whitley just in time. Now it was his who was wide awake as she happily carried trays in hand alongside Yang, Weiss, and Penny; they happily danced side to side in messy aprons as they put food on the table for everyone. Stacks of strawberry pancakes in the shape of roses and buttermilk pancakes in the form of the sun were presented with hash browns, eggs, sausage, biscuits, ham, the whole spread and additional goodies for everyone to eat. They took their seat and looked at Whitley as if he wanted to make some grand speech.

As far as cooking goes in the house, everyone has a role or something they are good at. For lucy, it's making pastas or dishes with noodles. For Shaun, it's any dish with meat. This ranges from brisket to barbecue. For rebecca, it's baking, strangely enough. She's an amazing baker. Her cakes and other pastries could be on professional levels. "Desmond, come here and try this dish for me!" Shaun yells from the kitchen. He's on main dish dinner duty for the night. This time, it's Mongolian beef over steamed rice.

Of course, Desmond is outside the kitchen in a flash.

"Oh god, don't let Desmond in here. He'll eat up everything like he did last time." Rebecca fussed while stirring batter.

Shaun carefully lifts the lid off the pot, "I'll keep him on a tight leash, Becca." Desmond practically inhales the piece he is given.

"Mmmm, so goodddd." His hand reaches out for another piece, which is stopped.

"Focus Desmond, what else does it need?"

"A pinch more of chili peppers, the sweet is overpowering the spice."

"Thanks, you can go now."

".....Um, can I have another piece?"

"No." "Please?" "No." "Please?" "No." "Pretty please?" "No, desmond." "But Shaun in starvinggg." "Too bad, you can wait like the rest of us." "Pleaseeee?" "FINE! Jesus, just get away."

Desmond eventually gets another piece of steak. He always seems to get what he wants, and he knows this as he makes his rounds to everyone in the kitchen.

"Shaun, what happened to the tight leash?!"

"His begging started to annoy me." He said with a smug look and a shrug of his shoulders.

"UGH! You didn't even try."

"Hello Rebecca, what whatcha makin'?"

"Strawberry shortcakes, and no, you can not eat the strawberries or lick the filling!"

Despite her words, she makes Desmond his on little shortcake. When he's done with that one, he sneaks another and slips away before she can fuss at him.

"Hey, luce" "Let me guess you want some?" "Yes please!" "Here, it's garlic butter noodles." She gives Desmond a spoon.

"What do you think?"

"So good, you're the best lucy."

By time everything is done brought out to the table, there's questionable portions of everything. There's less beef than there was before, half of a shortcake is missing, and a section of the pan of butter noodles is missing. They all know desmond is the culprit.

Shaun stares in disbelief at the food on the table.

"Guys, we might need to invest in an adult sized baby gate for the kitchen."
