hello! thank you 🥰 i hope you're doing well too! i actually wrote about this in 2023 in an article for junkee where i talked about cannibalism in media i really liked!

Basically, I wrote about how the cannibalism in these stories was very much a metaphor for larger societal conflicts and concepts. media mentioned in the article is: Fresh (2022), Atlanta S03E10, Bones and All (2022), and Yellowjackets (at time of writing, it hadn't pissed me off yet). But since this article was published I have also watched The Platform films on Netflix, both of which use cannibalism viscerally as a commentary on hoarding resources - similar to Snowpiercer. I LOVED Bones and All. I own it on bluray. Not just because its so beautifully made, but I love how "Eaters" in that film very much represent marginalised communities who are "alone together" on the outskirts of society.

Finally, my favourite FAVOURITE story about cannibalism is the Speculative Fiction novel: Tender Is The Flesh by Agustina Bazterrica, set in a not-too-distant future where climate disaster has destroyed animal life so humans are mass-produced for consumption. It's not a book I'd recommend if you're squeamish in any way or if you struggle reading horror. But its my favourite cannibalism story for how it takes cannibalism to a societal extreme to make a point about how fucked up capitalism and misogyny are.

Also, Society Of The Snow (2023) on Netflix is based on the true survival story of the Uruguayan plane crash on which a lot of Yellowjackets is inspired by. I like the unsensational and matter-of-fact way the cannibalism is framed. Also, the film is made with a lot of compassion and respect for the fact that this was something these very real people (some of whom are still alive) had to do so they wouldn't die. I recommend as a good movie about cannibalism as a necessity for survival which is my second favourite way to see cannibalism in a story.

Anyways, thank you for being nosy! I love being asked about this because I feel like there's no cool and normal way to bring up how much i've overthought the way cannibalism can be used as a commentary on society without sounding unhinged.
