While Iām still a bit bummed that they didnāt go with a more book-aligned POC Fiyero for the Wicked movie, Iāve been thinking (heheh) about how his being white highlights the really interesting foil relationship between him and Glinda (and, in many ways, the audience yourself).
At its core, Wicked is a cautionary tale about propaganda, (literal) scapegoating, and what it means to uphold the status quo. The audience is watching through Glindaās eyesāit is through her, arguably the most beautifully tragic character of the show, that we learn how lonely life becomes when you forfeit your values in favor of systemic power and likability (āNo One Mourns the Wickedā is, in many ways, about HER).
Now, this is where Fiyeroās whiteness can get interestingāif you consider him and Glinda to share roughly equal footing at the beginning in terms of privilege/how much they have to lose (applying our real-world lens of race and power here, where whiteness is the apex), his storyline essentially represents what could have happened if Glinda had made the brave (and arguably wise and loving, if youāre picking up what Iām putting down š) choice to go with Elphaba and fight the good fight (this is also why I feel like a queer reading of G&Eās relationship is almost implicit to the story, but I digress).
As the POC/marginalized allegory, Elphaba has much less of a real choice in her curtain-pulled-back turning point. But Fiyero and Glindaāboth representing privilegeāget to choose. So in Act II, we see the consequences of both the choice to stay (Glinda) and to go (Fiyero). In Fiyeroās case, his ultimate rejection of his own power, privilege, and even beauty leads to immense physical lossāincluding his own bodyābut that is then compared to the loss of love, community, and identity that we see Glinda left with by the end. And this brings us to the question that the audience is left grappling with: in an unjust system where loss is inevitable (a.k.a. our own world, as the Wizard himself represents), which of these things are YOU more willing to give up?
Itās important that Glinda is an empathetic character because, in reality, most people are going to be Glindas (obvi this is nuanced among us Elphabas of marginalized identities, but Iād still argue that thereās some level of Glinda in us all)āand itās important to be rattled by the end of the show when you realize that she is the one who has the sad ending. But itās also so important that Fiyero is empathetic (which Iām SO glad this movie leaned into)ābecause heās ultimately who Glindaāand thus we, as the audienceāshould have been.
And especially given the state of US politics right nowā¦this is just all more relevant than ever.
#I could go on about how the male and female gender roles/queerness also plays into these dynamics but I NEED to finish my grad apps hrrrr#soon maybe#also donāt get me started on the trump era of it all#WOOF I forgot how much I love this show#THE WORLD CAN FINALLY SEE WHY ITS BEEN ROTTING MY BRAIN FOR 20 YEARS#wicked#wicked meta#wicked spoilers#fiyero tigelaar#glinda upland#fiyeraba#gliyeraba#gelphie

it took the internet exactly 2.3 seconds to fully erase the Jew and Romani hatred from modern day Nazi ideology and make it about hating liberals and queer people and honestly anyone who is engaging in that kind of revisionist bullshit can fuck right off and unfollow me.
The Nazis told people that disability and homosexuality were products of Jewish people existing and part of our plan to undermine their little Aryan nation and once they got rid of all the Jews, gays and disabled people would be no more. LGBTQ people were never the primary target, and Jews were blamed for all of it regardless. You cannot separate Nazism from Jew hatred and pretending otherwise is disgusting.
#Antisemitism#Jumblr#my dash is disgusting right now wowwwwwww#Personal#Leftist antisemitism#And while you are all sitting around relieved because at least you have each other for the next four years Jews are utterly alone#Weāve been excluded from queer liberal and nonwhite spaces for over a year now and even if you welcome us back how do we feel safe there?#If you care so much about Nazis where have you been the last 15 months?

Young queers.
I know you're scared.
But take it from an older queer who grew up in New York City in the 80s - we do not go quiet into this night. Queer people aren't a funeral dirge, we are a community, a celebration, a riot.
Be loud.
Get angry.
Take up space.
Fight with whatever weapons you have, with honesty and integrity and determination and hand-in-hand with other oppressed targeted groups.
I'm scared too, and I have been fighting for as long as I can remember, and I will keep fighting, and you can join us and fight too.
Endure.
We will not go quietly.
We are gonna be *huge* bitches about it.

Things Pride Month and Halloween have in common:
Christian cultists think it's satanic
Demons are a prevalent theme
The Gays get really excited about it
Costumes are common
People fearmonger about The Childrenā¢ featuring elaborate scenarios they made up
It's best when celebrated all year long

A thought Iāve been having: While it's important to recognize the long history of many current queer identities (and the even longer history of people who lived outside of the straight, cis, allo ānormā) I think it's also important to remember that a label or identity doesn't have to be old to be, for lack of a better word, real.
This post that i reblogged a little while ago about asexuality and its history in the LGBTQ+ rights movement and before is really good and really important. As i've thought about it more, though, it makes me wonder why we need to prove that our labels have "always existed." In the case of asexuality, that post is pushing back against exclusionists who say that asexuality was āmade up on the internetā and is therefore invalid. The post proves that untrue, which is important, because it takes away a tool for exclusionists.
But aromanticism, a label & community with a lot of overlap & solidarity with asexuality, was not a label that existed during Stonewall and the subsequent movement. It was coined a couple decades ago, on internet forums. While the phrasing is dismissive, it would be technically accurate to say that it was āmade up on the internet.ā To be very clear, Iām not agreeing with the exclusionists hereāIām aromantic myself. What Iām asking is, why does being a relatively recently coined label make it any less real or valid for people to identify with?
I think this emphasis on historical precedent is what leads to some of the attempts to label historical figures with modern terminology. If we can say someone who lived 100 or 1000 years ago was gay, or nonbinary, or asexual, or whatever, then that grants the identity legitimacy. but that's not the terminology they would have used then, and we have no way of knowing how, or if, any historical person's experiences would fit into modern terminology.
There's an element of "the map is not the territory" here, you know? Like this really good post says, labels are social technologies. There's a tendency in the modern Western queer community to act like in the last few decades the "truth" about how genders and orientations work has become more widespread and accepted. But that leaves out all the cultures, both historical and modern, that use a model of gender and sexuality that doesn't map neatly to LGBTQ+ identities but is nonetheless far more nuanced than "there are two genders, man and woman, and everyone is allo and straight." Those systems arenāt any more or less ātrueā than the system of gay/bi/pan/etc and straight, cis and trans, aro/ace and allo.
I guess what Iām saying is, and please bear with me here, āgayā people have not always existed. āNonbinaryā people have not always existed. āAsexualā people have not always existed. But people who fell in love with and had sex with others of the same gender have always existed. People who would not have identified themselves as either men or women have always existed. People who didnāt prioritize sex (and/or romance) as important parts of their lives have always existed. In the grand scheme of human existence, all our labels are new, and thatās okay. In another hundred or thousand years weāll have completely different ways of thinking about gender and sexuality, and thatāll be okay too. Our labels can still be meaningful to us and our experiences right now, and that makes them real and important no matter how new they are.
We have a history, and we should not let it be erased. But we donāt need a history for our experiences and ways of describing ourselves to be real, right now.
#stars has thoughts#i'm not letting the exclusionists have this one#'it was coined on the internet' 'it was only coined a few (read: in the case of aromanticism almost 20) years ago' true. so what?#that doesn't make it less real#i hope what i'm getting at comes across here#(and that it doesn't sound like im trying to invalidate all LGBTQ+ labels lol. i'm trying so hard to not do that)#labels are social technologies. if they are useful here and now then they are useful#we are using technologies that are new and innovative and useful to us in this time and place#in other times and places they have not always been and will not always be useful#but that's true of any technology. doesn't mean we don't get to use them now#queer#aspec stuff#aro thoughts
