Purple Sweet Potato Soup

1 tbsp coconut oil 1 leek, peeled and chopped 1 tsp garlic paste 1 tsp ginger paste 6 generous cups chopped purple sweet potato 6 cups water 2 cans (400 ml each) coconut milk 1 cup red lentils 1/3 cup white miso paste 1 tbsp Chinese 5-Spice 1/2 tsp sea salt ¼ tsp black pepper
Heat coconut oil in large saucepan over medium-high heat. Sauté leek for several minutes. Add garlic and ginger pastes and sauté for another minute or two.
Stir in the; sweet potatoes, water, coconut milk, red lentils, miso paste, and Chinese 5-Spice. Turn heat to high. Once soup begins to bubble, turn heat to low and simmer for 10-12 minutes, stirring occasionally. Turn heat off.
With a handheld immersion blender, purée soup until smooth and creamy. Stir in sea salt and black pepper. Taste and adjust seasoning if necessary.
Ladle into bowls and serve.

Sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas) comes in a variety of colours such as orange, purple, white and yellow. They are also rich in vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and fibre. You can boil, bake, steam or fry them but in our house, we normally boil/steam it whole with skin or peel the skin and prepare it as Sweet Potato Dessert Soup (番薯糖水). Here, we are using Vietnam grown Japanese Purple Skin Sweet Potato with yellow flesh.

started the new year right by having one of my all time fav tong sui (chinese sweet dessert) - barley, ginkgo & fu zhuk (beancurd) dessert 🤤💞

It’s soup season AND spooky season! I was pleasantly surprised how delicious this ube, ginger, coconut soup was. Easy to make and healthy! Topped with a little yogurt and roasted pistachios. When I can get my hands on some more ube, I will definitely make more of this.

I have a new favorite soup:
Japanese Sweet Potato Soup with Crispy Soy-Maple Brussels Sprouts.
I have made this soup like 3 times in the past month. It hits every time. It is my comfort soup.
It’s crazy good. Extremely simple, but has such a unique texture and flavor profile. The Japanese sweet potatoes have such an amazing flavor that you don’t need anything else but some onion, broth, coconut milk, and a touch of soy-maple seasoning from the brussels sprouts. The sweet potato is 100% the star. It’s rich, nutty, savory-sweet, and the texture is a silky puree.
Here is the recipe.
INGREDIENTS
3-4 Japanese sweet potatoes (red outside, white inside—not purple Murasaki), peeled and chopped
1/2 large yellow onion, chopped
4-5 cups chicken or vegetable broth
1 x 14oz can coconut milk or cream
1-2 lbs brussels sprouts, chopped into thirds
olive oil, salt, freshly ground black pepper
2 Tbsp soy sauce
2 Tbsp maple syrup or honey
DIRECTIONS
1. In a dutch oven or large pot, sauté the onions in a little butter or oil until softened and just beginning to brown.
2. Add chopped potatoes. Add broth. Bring to a boil, reduce to a low boil or simmer, and let cook for 15-20 minutes until potatoes are fork tender. **If desired, leave a small portion of uncooked potato, chopped into matchsticks, out of the soup until after blending and then add back in during the last 20 minutes for a little texture.
3. Turn off heat. Using an immersion blender*, blend the soup until mostly smooth. Add the coconut milk and continue blending until you have a silky smooth, glossy puree texture. (In the beginning you can use a potato masher to give the blender a head start.)
4. Simmer another 15-20 minutes, stirring and scraping the bottom of the pot frequently to avoid sticking, until ready to serve.
5. While soup is cooking, roast brussels sprouts: Heat oven to 425°. Toss chopped brussels sprouts in olive oil, salt, and pepper. Spread in an even layer in a cast iron or sheet pan. Roast 30 minutes until browning, then mix together soy sauce and maple syrup. Drizzle over sprouts and toss and turn them. Roast an additional 10-15 minutes until very dark brown and crispy.
6. Add some of the brussels sprouts to the finished soup and use the rest to go on top.
*You can do this in batches with a blender or food processor, but be very careful: hot liquid in an enclosed space creates pressure and it will spit when you remove the lid each time. If using a blender, let it cool 10 minutes, then stir in coconut milk to cool further, then blend.

If I may please ask a question on your soup stock recipe: could you use /any/ vegetable bits or am I better sticking to ones that you listed? Specifically the other veggie types I'd most likely end up with scraps of are stems of leafy greens, (sweet) potatoes, and bell peppers. I could especially see potential issues with the first two of those, so I thought I would check what your experience/cooking knowledge thought.
the sweet potatoes and bell peppers are going to have a pretty strong influence on the flavor of your stock, but hey you may as well try it and see if it tastes good to you.
I made some stock a while back that ended up being very funny because I had a bunch of red cabbage scraps in the freezer bag so the stock came out noticeably blue/purple, but it tasted really good.
I don't put bell peppers in my stock because large bastard hates them; i just made a big pot of stock that had a LOT more mushrooms than my normal stock and has a noticeably mushroomy flavor, which will limit the things that would be suitable to cook with that batch. It all depends!

The stream is live from a Shelldon piloted camera, and he's going around above a large open field where the Hamato Family is having another cookout. With a number of patio heaters in the area near the table.
Sure there's alot of snow nearby, but that's just lead to many shots of them playing in the snow.
Many watching who weren't used to these kind of streams were still confused how Dee got the AR to work even with all the possible interference. Veterans of the streams stopped questioning it long ago, and just accepted that Dee was some kind of tecnomancer.
There was evidence of snowmen that were destroyed from in snowball fight, the was an igloo half constructed not that far from the battlefield, and now the group were around the grill/griddle table cooking various different foods.
Mikey had a big pot of soup, slightly elevated, on one side of the table with lots of noodles with some veggies floating around. He was making sure it stayed warm, but didn't overcook.
Donnie and Raph both had big steaks cooking to their preferences. Leo was prepping some stuff to add to his soup.
The Caseys' were both cooking some fish they caught from a nearby semi frozen river/pond/lake. April was grill some smaller steaks chunks for herself.
Meanwhile to the side we see Splinter and a rare Draxum having some roasted sweet potatoes. The stream was excited to see them, since they almost never see Draxum outside of a random Clinic Stream when he was dropping off some medicine for a patient.
Shelldon just drifted around sometimes getting close enough to pickup random chatter from the family, but not enough to make sense of what was said. Every now and then the audience can see another group nearby, with mostly Purple themed stuff, doing their own thing.
Though some swear they can see River with this group, playing with 3 Purple robots, but no one would confirm this.
There's a notification popup on the screen that reads "Sorry, again, for not interacting with you guys. We keep forgetting that this is Live. We will be having a fireworks/drone show later to make up for it! -Dee, Blue, Mandarin and Red.'
With a second one following, 'And Stop Simping for our Dads! It's weird enough as is! -Blue'.
That didn't discourage the audience, they just took it to the "Hidden Fan Discord", that Donnie already found, and was secretly a Moderator for.

lunch : one sugar free monster.. the purple one dinner : half a portion of chicken noodle soup, chicken thighs, a small amount of potato wedges, cauliflowers. and a slice of cheesecake. it was not sweet so idk what flavour this was LMFAO

ok so really i dont know what this day was. i woke up not planning to do anything and literally just planned to play minecraft all day and maybe draw. i went out with my friend to the gas station to pick up cigarettes and it was all fine and dandy for the most part. i get a text from my coworker and its an adress and a time, with a band name above it. text says "adress for concert, guy says he invited you last week" and i remembered... thats right ! at work a guy told me about a concert he was giving and invited me, but i forgot about it 5 mins later cause well.. yeah i was busy at work
so, i go home and i told my mom like hey mom i have a concert thing later, local thing idk. trash metal, she says ok. so i eat dinner and get ready for the concert.
dinner was very good, the soup was nice but i didnt like howwww many noodles my mom put... sigh. the other food was mildly cold too, but its ok i survived. the cheesecake was good and not very sweet but thats why i liked it.
then i get ready for the concert and my friend who was coming with me brought us goldstrike. we arrive there already a little fucked. there were 3 gigs and through the progression of the gigs i got myself more and more drunk on fucking beer. i ended up having 5 beers give me a break LMAO. after the final song we all get ready to leave and me and my friend get on the bike and sit on a random bench. some girl gave me a joint for free if i kissed her like a peck so i said ahh fuck it sure. it was SO GOOD but that was a problem cause... the munchies would kick in and fuck they did.
we made it our mission to go to the only place open at 1:30 am and we went there with so much struggle and we stayed there for AN HOUR. i did count the cals yes, i am not crazy... but i did count them into the next day... so ill write about that in my next entry. then i went back home and had chocolate... sigh... but again i counted it... then went to bed. sigh. i cant wait for soup week, i hope i actually make some progress.

If you have harvest to use like I do, or want to eat seasonally, give this recipe a try.
HARVEST SOUP 🍅🌽🧅🥕🍠
• 1 lb. grass-fed ground beef or lean, organic ground turkey (or lentils for plant-based)
• 1/2 onion, chopped
• 2 (10.5 oz) cans beef consomme
• 2 cups filtered water
• 1 1/2 cups tomatoes, cubed
• 1 Tbsp Stevia
• 1 1/2 cups corn
• 2 carrots, peeled & sliced
• 2 celery stalks, chopped
• 4-5 purple potatoes or 2 medium sweet potatoes, peeled & cubed
• 1 tsp. @redmondrealsalt salt
• pepper to taste
Directions:
1. Brown meat with onions.
2. In large pot, bring water & broth to a boil.
3. Add in all ingredients.
4. Boil until vegetables are tender (about 20 minutes).

[After Cyrus saw Lilia's Purple Soup, he excused himself from the table and went to Sam's Shop, returning with meat, potatoes, and other things.]
Cyrus (Dragging Lilia out of the kitchen): Come along, Master Lilia. I will take care of this.
[30 Minutes Later]
[Cyrus places plates of food in front of everyone: Steak Strips over white rice fizzled in garlic steak saw with homemade steak fries from the potatoes he had with barbecue sauce as dipping for the fries.]
Cyrus (Sits): Please, enjoy. (Watches as Malleus, Sebek, and Silver scarf down the food like ravenous hounds.) Um...
Boss, not gonna lie - In my opinion, Barbecue and Sweet & Sour Sauce are so good with fries.
Lilia: You guys don't act like that with my cooking!
Malleus: Because we can stomach it.
Sweet and Sour sauce is really good.
