And yes, I understand that some of you are pure souls who claim to never judge—but let’s be honest, most of us have a messy side!

Fire Venus: Character Focused Judgments

Fire Venus individuals tend to judge people quickly. They often criticize others for being weak, overly cautious, or too passive, as they dislike those who don’t go after what they want. They might talk about how they feel superior to someone else and often gain attention themselves. As a result, they may view others as boring or uninteresting.

Fire Venus placements can also be judgmental about a person’s friends or the family they come from. They pride themselves on being able to detect fake friendships and generally dislike people they perceive as fake, uppity, or pretentious. They often criticize others for not being more free-spirited or for being uptight.

When it comes to fashion, they have a clear sense of what they like. While they aren’t necessarily trying to stand out, they will judge someone who seems to be trying too hard to appear aesthetic. They may also look down on people who lack personality, are overly submissive or docile in relationships, or don’t exhibit any dominance. Additionally, they can be critical of those who are consistently negative, pessimistic, or down.

Earth Venus: Status Oriented Judgments

Earth Venus individuals are highly particular and often more judgmental than Fire Venus. While Fire Venus judges based on qualities they take pride in within themselves, Earth Venus can judge others even when they feel insecure. Their judgment spans across a wide range of things, making them very critical.

They’ll judge people based on their accomplishments—or the lack thereof. If they can’t visibly see someone’s achievements, they’re likely to criticize them for not doing enough with their life. Earth Venus individuals are also very nitpicky about style and fashion. They might focus on the smallest details, such as how someone wears their hair, applies makeup, or accessorizes with jewelry. Even personal scent and hygiene can be points of judgment.

They also assess whether someone appears goal-oriented or organized. If a person seems directionless or like they’re just “floating” through life, Earth Venus will judge them harshly. They place heavy emphasis on physical appearance, often making quick judgments about whether someone is attractive or not.

Education and career are other areas where Earth Venus is critical. They may judge someone for not going to college, for having fewer than two degrees, or for not earning a certain salary. Where someone lives, the hobbies they pursue, and even the family they come from are all potential areas of scrutiny. Earth Venus individuals tend to form opinions about a person’s friends and social circle as well.

Unconventional lifestyles are another source of judgment; they’re quick to label someone “weird” for living differently. They are incredibly judgmental about body weight, daily habits, and even how others approach the same tasks they do. Even if someone achieves the same outcome, Earth Venus might criticize them for not doing it the “right” way—their way.

Overall, Earth Venus is arguably the most judgmental of all Venus placements. They evaluate everything with a critical eye and often hold people to impossibly high standards.

Air Venus: Cerebral and Social Judgments

Air Venus individuals can also be highly judgmental, often driven by their superficial tendencies. They tend to place a significant emphasis on appearances and may judge someone solely based on how they look or present themselves to the world. If someone doesn’t meet their standards of physical attractiveness or style, they can be very critical.

They also value intellect and are quick to judge others based on their intelligence. They’re not afraid to label someone as “dumb,” “slow,” or “stupid” if they feel the person lacks knowledge or common sense. Air Venus individuals are the type to say, “common sense isn’t so common.” If someone doesn’t understand certain things, they may become irritated and judgmental, often calling people out for it.

They’re critical of overly emotional people and those who don’t rely on facts or logic. Air Venus individuals tend to judge those they perceive as monotonous, boring, or close-minded. Traditional people, in particular, might rub them the wrong way, as Air Venus often gravitates toward progressive or innovative ideas.

Overall, Air Venus individuals can be harshly critical, often holding people to high intellectual and social standards while heavily prioritizing aesthetics and independence.

Water Venus: Emotionally Driven Judgment

Water Venus individuals base their judgments primarily on how they feel about others, making their evaluations deeply personal and subjective. They often rely on their intuition, sensing people’s energy and deciding, “I don’t like this person” or “I don’t like how this person is.”

Interestingly, they dislike overly judgmental people. If someone judges them, they’ll respond in kind, criticizing that person for being judgmental. Water Venus placements also judge others based on their sentimentality and capacity to care. To earn their approval, you need to be nurturing, loving, and compassionate. An MC who actually has seven cats back in the Human World (crazy cat person or maybe a foster parent who takes in sick cats and orphan kittens) and each cat looks and acts like a cat version of each brother.

Magic happens and the seven cats get taken to the Devildom somehow, now MC + Brothers are stuck with seven cats who look way and act too alike with brothers, well at least Satan is pleased.

Names & Gender of the cats can vary but the cats are look and act fairly similar to how the brothers do, at least translated into cat behavior.

Lucifer - Black Cat with orangey-red eyes, the cat equivalent to a 'pack' leader among MC's cats, the eldest and certified mama/papa cat, often seen punishing the younger cats for playing too rough or being naughty kitties in general, acts mean and distant but opens up eventually.

Mammon - Long haired White Cat with blue eyes, naughty kitty who likes stealing MC's (and their neighbor's) things, usually it's things like laundry but has occasionally been caught with shiny objects like keys and jewelry, also steals and hoards all of the cat toys and no amount of spraying them with water can stop them.

Leviathan - Skinny Kitty, thinking one of those oriental cats with the big noses, awkward kitties who boot too big for his godamg feet. A Cat who is commonly found watching those bird videos and MC lets them play those 'squish the bug' games on an old ipad they have, it's funny to watch them try and pounce on a digital screen, probably has a lot of scratches on it.

Satan - A tabby cat, Kitty who's pretty normal but very easy to piss off. Try and touch their belly? Claws. Try and pick them up? Claws. Put one of those dumb outfits/hats on them? You best sleep with one eye open. Very hissy but becomes a baby immediately once in MC's arms.

Asmodeus - One of those very aesthetic, beautiful, expensive breed type cats. The type of cat you see having an social media account with thousands or even a million followers, very pretty kitty who's very affectionate and lays on MC's lap at all times.

Beelzebub - ORANGE CAT HERE, BIG ORANGE CAT WHO STEALS THE OTHER CATS' FOOD WHEN IT'S EATING TIME. if MC has one of those automatic feeders, it definitely just sits there, waiting for the food to fall out. The Cabinet that holds all the treats had to be given a child's lock because this orange bastard discovered how doors worked and made it MC's problem.

Belphegor - Sleepy Kitty, always sleeping. Has definitely given MC a panic attack because they fell so deep into sleep that MC straight up thought they were dead for like a full minute. When not asleep, they're off stealing chairs and beds. 'Oh hello human where you doing work on this laptop of yours well not anymore because ive chosen to park my ass right here and you can't move me, guess you gotta pay attention to me.' Smug bastard cat.

Tell me about TASHI DUNCAN

TASHI DUNCAN a character of all time!!! Thank you so much for this ask, Anon. Here is a non-exhaustive list of things I love about Tashi:

How canny she is, so young, about the racism and misogynoir of the world she moves through. She knows how angry white women are to lose to her, and she knows how prone the men and boys around her are to projecting their unmet needs onto her (savior, mommy, trophy, etc.). That's all part of why her career-ending injury is so thoroughly unmaking, because losing tennis makes her touchable again. There's a section in Claudia Rankine's Citizen about Serena Williams reacting to an unjust fault call, and I think about that section when I think about Tashi.

The unhinged lengths she will go to in order to avoid any repeat experience of vulnerability. On the worst day of her life, Patrick wasn't there, and Art was, and I really think a not-insignificant part of the rest of film for Tashi is driven by her need to avoid betraying any hint of disappointment or regret or doubt or hurt in front of either of them ever again. She's built so much of her life around never letting anyone see her as injured or defeated that she cannot accommodate Art's ennui or forgive Patrick's dilettantism.

Speaking of which, I've seen posts that suggest Tashi is angry at Patrick and cold toward Art, and I don't think either of those things is incorrect, but I also think stopping there would mean drawing a very incomplete portrait of a character who has just as much skin in the emotional game as the boys. It's true that she has a kind of ruthlessness both Art and Patrick lack early on - an intense self-competitiveness that allows her to disappear inside tennis - but at the root her drive is toward connection, not self-aggrandizement. Adding the "s" to revise "Game Changer" to "Game Changers" is about insisting on her place in Art's career, sure, but it's also about recognizing the collective nature of tennis's battle with the self. "It's like we were in love," she says of her juniors win. "Or like we didn't exist. We went somewhere really beautiful together": Tashi understands that self-transcendence is not a solo act.

To wit: Tashi's day-to-day is continuously shaped by family ties, while both Patrick and Art are conspicuously unparented and largely unparenting. Again, it could be easy to read Tashi as the most self-interested or self-contained of the three, but I think the film uses family (her nods to what her parents wanted for her, her sharing of care duties with her mother, her rituals with Lily) to show that in many ways Tashi's life actually involves more mutuality, on a structural level, than either Art or Patrick.

Which reminds me of Tashi's LILY bracelet: one of the pieces of jewelry she gradually acquires in the course of the film (including the crucifix necklace she starts with, the Cartier trinity pendant she adds later, and Art's grandmother's ring). I think Tashi's accessories offer a very interesting way of reading her orientation toward the sedimentary, sometimes competing attachments she's formed - especially when compared to Art's name-brand-corporate-sponsored everything and Patrick's affectedly dirtbag aesthetic. They're all trying to understand the relationship between who they are and who they were when they met, and the costuming telegraphs their different strategies.

It seems like every year I end up writing an iteration of the same idea. But here I am! Writing it again! If you haven’t seen the tweet that sparked this conversation, I’ve screenshotted the tweet and artwork below. It’ll help inform this discussion. Full piece under the cut.

It would help to check out my essay from 2021 about the emasculation of Abdul Ali from Squid Game, since both pieces share similar references.

Maryam Khalid writes “Orientalist notions of the masculinity of the ‘Eastern’ male as uncivilized also inherently ascribe primitiveness, ineptness and a certain amount of weakness to the barbarized ‘other.’” Those doomed to the mythical Orient are automatically placed lower in masculinity than their white and colonial counterparts.

The reason for this emasculation is to defang them, to ensure they can never attain the same power conferred by white masculinity and to maintain racial purity: “This feminizing divests the male body of its virility and thus compromises its power not only to penetrate and reproduce its own nation (our women), but to contaminate the other's nation (their women) as well” (Puar, 99).

To be South Asian is to be pathologically queer, irrespective of the one’s true sexual orientation. “The Orient becomes a living tableau of queerness” by virtue of being from the Orient (Said, 103). There is already a robust amount of artwork depicting Pavitr with tons of gold jewelry and piercings, which to the West are typically feminine accessories. This essentially reduces Pavitr to a stereotype of South Asian culture.

Fanworks use the bejeweled, indulgent, exotic, and sultry attitude as a short-hand for their perception of South Asia. They are “caricatures stripped from movies like Disney’s Aladdin, the Arcana or people’s sexual fantasies about our men,” as allahrakhi writes in her essay on fandom's reception of Claude von Riegan from Fire Emblem: Three Houses, a character similarly mischaracterized by virtue of his brown identity.

Puar describes that the (implied white) nation defines “upright, domesticatable queernesses that mimic and recenter liberal subjecthood, and out-of-control, untetherable queernesses” (47). Nonwhite queerness is “untetherable,” leaving white queerness as “domesticatable.” This inability to engage brown queerness forces brown queer people to assimilate into white queerness.

In fandom’s and society’s mind, there is no such thing as a queer South Asian without them discarding their brown identity and adopting white queer practices, behaviors, and aesthetics. Queer South Asians are “either liberated (and the United States and Europe are often the scene of this liberation) or can only have an irrational, pathological sexuality of queerness” (Puar, 13).

Which brings us to the recent depictions of Pavitr in fanworks, stripping him of his masculinities to render him as a vapid, neutered, and yes, whitewashed queer boy, completely unrecognizable from the source material.

Interestingly, this reduced masculinity co-exists, paradoxically, with the idea that men from the Orient are simultaneously aggressive, belligerent, and violent. Elgin Brunner writes: “Such a framing—the association of the enemy with barbarism, as opposed to the self, which is civilized—includes two, often simultaneous, moves, that is: the ‘hypermasculinization’ of the enemy on the one hand, and his ‘effeminization’ on the other… The very same opponent is, by virtue of being categorized as a cowardly barbarian, rendered effeminate.”

The flip side of the effeminate brown man is the hypermasculine brown man, which can be seen through Miguel, one of Across the Spider-Verse’s antagonists. Both instances of brown masculinity confiscate personhood from characters who would have otherwise offered rich, nuanced, interesting perspectives to the story and to the audience.

It would be myopic of me to not mention the implicit genderings of other nonwhite ethnicities in this discussion. Brown men hold a unique positionality to other nonwhite men in a racial triangulation I’d like to examine further in another essay for the future. Brown men can either be gendered the way that East Asians are (feminine, asexual, neutered, timid, obedient) or the way that Black people are (hypersexual, predatory, dangerous, aggressive). Both misgenderings are in opposition to the “ideal” male gender, which is of course, the white man. This fallacy is why we see Hobie depicted as cruel, mean, and irritated in the exact same artwork from earlier.

Many people in this artist’s quoted replies have accused the artist of being white. I have seen some criticisms of the backlash, that people shouldn’t assume the artist’s ethnicity. I think both opinions miss the point: anyone can be orientalist. Membership within a nonwhite ethnic identity does not absolve the individual of perpetuating orientalist or racist depictions of characters of color.

As Edward Saïd said, “Everyone who writes about the Orient must locate himself vis-a-vis the Orient” (Orientalism, 20). That is to say, if you write and depict the Orient and people from the Orient, you have to consider your positionality in relation to the Orient. Naturally, this would mean that white people should always be cognizant of their depictions of Orientals. But East Asians can also orientalize, whether it is other ethnic groups like South Asians; or self-orientalization. Similar can be said for South Asians who self-orientalize.

Khalid writes “Gendered identities do not exist independently of other factors, and must be viewed as intertwined with, for example, race or ethnicity if we are to understand the hierarchical organization of identities.” There is no examination of gender without an accompanying racial context. And Pavitr’s emasculation in fandom certainly requires a critical eye for both race and gender, lest we repeat the same dehumanizing characterizations of him in further fanworks.

looking at this design, it's easy to tell how much love, time, and effort was put into it. with elements that mirror loki's canon moteifs altered in ways that feel cozy, it's undeniable that there was a lot of thought put into the jötnar as a people. they mirror asgard in a way that directly contrasts the claims we see the aesir make of them, while still feeling like a separate and distinct culture with their personalized magic, unique horns, and clear social dynamics

while deceptively simple, this design is thoughtful and paints a very different picture of jötunheim than we are used to seeing in canon. this design implies a combination of mythologies, which we are very used to in marvel, while giving love and thought to a vivid world of religion which is not often given the same respect as norse or greek mythology. protected from the weather in a way that would not make a temperature-sensitive frost giant overheat, loki's design is full of love for both fantasy, and the very real people who often inspire it 💞

it means the world to me that as many people participated as they did and i really hope that this contest helped make this fandom a more inclusive space in some way

TBH rather than east asian cultures- I think I've seen way more questionable portrayals of middle eastern cultures on FR.
