i had a thought of "do people not know what AUs are anymore?" and then i remembered nobody explains fandom stuff to new people anymore so it is entirely plausible people genuinely don't know what AUs are and nobody has explained it to them, so for today's lucky 10,000:

"AU" stands for "Alternate Universe" or "Alternative Universe" (same difference) and is basically any thought scenario for a fandom that isn't canon and can't fit within the canon universe. If it takes place in the canon universe but something is notably different, that is typically what's known as a "Canon divergent AU," because it diverges from canon.

an AU can be absolutely anything. There's a couple of widespread pan-fandom au scenarios that often get thrown around, like coffee shop aus, genderbend aus, hanahaki aus (hanahaki is a whole thing in itself i'd recommend researching on your own), etc. One you might hear sometimes is "crossover AU" which is when you have characters from one fandom interacting with characters from another.

You can have as many aus as you want. They can be whatever you want and you can do whatever you want in them. It's a sandbox for you to play around in and explore how things would be different or how the characters would act in those circumstances or environments. Maybe they have different relationships with each other. Maybe they behave slightly differently. Or you can just say "Okay, [x] is true. How did they get here? How would things have to be different for this to occur?" which can also be fun.

If you are ever confused about why people ship something that seems completely out of the blue or doesn't make sense to you in the canon setting, there's a good chance they like it in an AU setting! Not everything everybody is interacting with is necessarily the canon! Not everybody wants things to exist in canon and just want to explore playing dolls in a different sandbox and that's okay. And their sandbox might look a lot different than yours, and that's also okay. You have the freedom to make your sandbox whatever you please. Do whatever you want forever. Get funky with it. AUs are fun.

Columbo and the Knight (1984)

put me in the universe where Columbo ran through the 1980s and had a crossover episode with Knight Rider. I think they deserved it, and I am not just saying that because they're my two favorite Old Shows. @telebeast wrote a little fanfic blurb about it and I HAD to visualize it into a comic (which is also the longest comic I have finished thus far at five pages...), so writing credit goes to them.

I find it honestly a little ironic how Near is always considered the "winner" in the Death Note fandom, because on paper it's true, but I feel like Near himself would resent that idea. Between L, Light, Mello and Near, Near is the only one who never once regards his prospective victory as a victory for himself alone. His entire speech in the warehouse is about how his original plan would have killed him, but it was the contributions of the people around him who saved his life and resolved the case. He recognises that he's only one piece in a bigger puzzle, yet he's always the one who gets credited, because he's the only one who lived.

related to my longer post just now, but it is also kinda funny when people try to frame Lucanis as being reluctant to be First Talon because he is struggling with a conflict between a gentler spirit and the work of being a killer when one of the reasons Lucanis preferred not to be First Talon is because it would cut into the time he spends stabbing people to death. like, he likes the killing people part of the job so much that he's trying to turn down a promotion that might affect how much directly killing people he'd be doing.

okay, i finished "all things". you know how i made that joke a while ago about innocently asking a question that reignites a 30 year fan war? well, i have one for you, and i'm putting it under read more because i know some of my followers haven't got there yet.

please do not judge if you think this is silly- you have had years with this episode and i finished it not even 10 minutes ago!

because at first i was gagged she was with a married man, but scully can be messy, so i thought about it and was like... hmm. maybe not THAT weird.

but then i got to thinking about it and... he was her professor, which is already a wild power dynamic. how are you supposed to turn down the advances of a guy who controls if you pass or fail med school?

and beyond that, he was obsessed with her to the point of moving out to the city where she lived, and breaking up his whole family after she left. and his comments were super nasty about her leaving. and then he said she was all he lived for, and it was like...??? holy hell. this seems... highly dubious, at best. he seemed obsessive and stalker-y.

idk. what is the consensus you have come to?

i know scully also dated one of her instructors at the FBI academy, so it seems there is a Pattern here, and maybe she did knowingly get involved in this relationship with a man who she knew was married (or maybe she didn't know he was married, but it seemed he did based on how she asked about the divorce?) and i'm not trying to make scully unproblematic or something- let her be #messy- i'm just trying to wrap my head around what exactly went down. there could also be the cultural difference of this being seen as a semi-normal thing to do when the episode aired, but now that i am of a certain age and a different generation, it comes across as Not Okay to a new viewer.

i'll ask these same questions in my episode writeup, because they are what is on my mind, but this seems like a better place to discuss just that aspect of the episode and not everything else.

Please correct me if I'm wrong I scrolled through the official dndads Twitter like once (I'm not getting on that app even if my life depends on it) but I remember them mentioning that they think it would be SO FUNNY if they did a dating sim... YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND HOW BADLY I NEED THAT TO BE REAL. I'M NOT EVEN ATTRACTED TO ANY OF THE CHARACTERS BUT LIKE. HEAR ME OUT. I'm talking s1 dads specifically... A dating sim in the vain of that other dad dating sim (I forgot what it was called sorry) with the main 4. It's fully voice acted. There's a plethora of different paths and wacky scenarios to go through depending on who and what you choose. Do you see the vision (I mean that's how all dating sims work but shhh). They would treat the player as a party member and force them to go on unrelated, frankly dumb sidequests with them in Faerun. SCREW IT JUST A DNDADS VISUAL NOVEL IN GENERAL. THEY CAN ADD MULTIPLE DLCS FOR SEASONS 2 AND 3. IT WOULD WORK SO WELL BECAUSE THE PODCAST'S OUTLANDISH HUMOR REALLY COULD FIT INTO THE VISUAL NOVEL FORMAT. They should do a Kickstarter or a Patreon stretch goal and hire a few talented artists and game designers. IK THAT'S A LOT OF EFFORT FOR A SIDE PROJECT BUT. Please. i feel like almost everything in utena has sort of already been extensively discussed in the last two (almost three) decades of utena's existence (not that there aren't new interpretations to be made, there always are) besides black rose arc (mikage+mamiya+tokiko). which is why they're so much fun to think about. i think the need to read between the lines makes it unfortunately easy to misunderstand or look past obvious stuff if you don't pay attention, but to me it's always been really obvious that mikage's arc is a literal representation of the erasure of queerness in ohtori (society?) by akio/everything he represents. and that's so fucking tragic! nemuro was never able to find a name for his desires. he lived and died as a puppet in the shadows.
