HI IT’S TIME TO GUSH ABOUT CLAIRE!!!!!!!!!

First of all, what a kind and sweet and supportive fucking soul. Literally brought us the joy that is fic club, and just in general is always hyping people up and reccing fics and leaving the sweetest comments and just being the best person ever.

And of course, her writing talent. Ohhhhhhhhh my god the way Claire has mastered pwp, emotional arcs, complicated plot, all of it???? MWAH.

A favorite of hers for me right now is The Broken Lines, her post-WWI fic that jumps between timelines to help stede discover the memories and love he’s lost as he bonds with a 1719 version of ed who, too, has lost the love of his life. I could hardly put it down for anything once I began, you could just feel how much knowledge and raw love Claire poured into this story. It’s mysterious and heartfelt and intense and gentle and sexy and heartwrenching and a million other things, god if I keep talking about it I’ll just have to reread it all right now! (And big shoutout to Gerlinde and Boy who did the fucking incredible art and podfic respectively!!!)

I also have a soft spot for Rinse and Repeat, where Stede keeps coming over to fuck Ed once a week like clockwork but then runs out when his timer goes off like a sexy Cinderella. Just a very fun and funny fic that quickly turns heartfelt and sweet (of course it does, it’s Claire!)

We only get halfway down the stairs before I’m turning him and pressing up against him so he’s backed into the corner of the stairwell.

I don’t really know where my nerves went. I think my urge to taste and touch him overrode the gentle thrum of date night anxiety.

“I have neighbors, Snow,” he says, and I feel victorious at the way he sounds slightly breathless.

I frown at him. “No one can see us from here.” I kiss him again, just to prove a point, and we stay like that for a full minute or more before I remember that we’re on a schedule.

“Come on,” I say, pulling him with me as I direct us down the stairs.

“Menace,” he murmurs and I think I see him adjusting his trousers from the corner of my eye. I don’t say anything, but I have a hard time keeping the grin off my face.

Alec tilts his head in puzzlement, glancing at his brother as if wondering how he could possibly consider that Alec had taken them there instead of here. “No?”

Alec’s head moves back to level and he narrows his eyes instead. “We said we were going home after patrol.”

The ‘ergo, we are home now’ wasn’t said, but it was obvious in implication.

Good Omens, 500 words Muriel (& or /) Eric the Disposable Demon

Eric released his firm grip on Muriel's hand as they arrived in the muddy field with the gentle susurrus of a demonic miracle. The waning sunlight caught on their skirts, softly white on Muriel and richly dark on Eric.

Eric invites Muriel out on something that might be intended as a date. Soft and sweet but with as much characterization and longing as I could layer into every line. It's just 500 words so it's a quick read, but I adore it.

It Came Upon a Midnight Clear

Good Omens, 3,073 words Aziraphale/Crowley

"It's been a bit since I've been flying." Aziraphale tilted forward and spread his wings to their fullest extent, catching a convenient airstream that flowed under his wings like a gentle caress as he leaned into it. "I imagine you do it quite a bit. You always liked the wind in your hair." "And you don't?" Crowley twisted himself to flow in the same direction, circling Aziraphale like a snake wrapping around a tree to climb, or a planet circling its star as they moved together through the galaxy. "I've never given much thought as to how much wind should be in your hair," Aziraphale replied in his haughtiest tone. "It seems quite untamable either way."

Set a bit before Season 1, Aziraphale is feeling down and Crowley has the brilliant idea to cheer him up by stealing a harp. 3k words of flying, flirting, banter, and barely-plausible deniability. (Also available as a podfic, thanks to @contritecactite!)

"What's your name?" the older vigilante asked. "…Spider-Man." It came out hesitantly, as if it were an identity he were borrowing, a mask as much as the one on his face. Daredevil nodded. "Spider-Man, then." It was a good answer.

This was the first fic I posted after my return to fandom and I still adore it. It's a dozen snapshots of Peter Parker's life as Spider-Man and what that identity means to him. What happens between the scenes is as important as what happens in them!

My top fic by kudos by far, and my return to writing fanfiction of fanfiction after having found so much joy in that as a child. The Tower of Babel is such a great scene to bring some Good-Omens-style guilt and tragedy to, and getting to write about how desperately Azazel and Jophiel need to hug was an utter delight.

“You jumped,” Theta hiccups. “You jumped!”

Prompt:

Theta/Koschei Koschei decides to ‘force a regeneration’ to see if it gets rid of the drums. I’ll let you decide at which point in that process Theta finds him.

The first thing Koschei hears is Theta-

No, the first thing he hears is the drums. He cringes in on his new body, its limbs awkwardly long and its hair in his face. He claws at his head, and when his nails aren’t strong enough to get inside and scratch the noise out, he starts pounding at his temples. It only encourages the drums to get louder. All he can smell is bitter metal, on his skin, in his mouth, soaked through. It was supposed to be cast off a new regeneration, so why is his blood still clinging to him?

He feels the hands wrap around his wrists and force him to stop. He feels the body kneeling next to his. “You jumped,” Theta hiccups. “You jumped!”

Koschei peers up at the cliffs above. The skies look like they’re burning overhead. Good, he thinks, good, burn down with me.

Him at the edge. Theta frozen feet away. An expression on their face he’d never seen, no matter how much they’d gotten into trouble in the past.

He scared his friend.

“I- I couldn’t move,” Theta says, like they need his forgiveness. “I tried! I couldn’t move! You jumped!”

“It didn’t work,” Koschei says, unable to summon up more reaction than a statement of fact. Theta shivers and wraps around him. They’re shorter than him. He didn’t think about that—only the blessed promise of relief. It’s all that he can hold onto now, Theta’s terrified expression as he tilted over the edge and their body, too small to bundle him up in their arms anymore like they used to. They bury their tears in his hair.

“Of course it didn’t work. You can regenerate, you can’t-” Their voice shatters. Koschei tries to be gentle, but he flinches at the pounding in his head, shoving Theta’s shoulder. Stubbornly, they hold on tighter. “I won’t let you go back up there. I won’t.”

“It didn’t work,” he repeats, like it’ll make sense to them. It hits him, suddenly, what he’s done. The obviousness of it, his whole body a betrayal of a moment’s grasp at peace, how could he- He wants to hide in Theta’s arms, but he can’t, he’s too tall.

“I did this,” Theta says. “It’s my fault. I did this.”

“No,” he snaps. He won’t have it taken from him, even as he can’t look at the shame of it. It was his choice; he jumped. “You told me to get away from the edge.”

“Shut up!” Theta is trying to crush him. His ribs ache from the way their fists jam into his sides. “I pushed you, understand?” He wriggles.

“You didn’t-”

“Koschei, you jumped,” Theta says, voice gone near a whisper again, and he listens to that more readily than he does when they match his volume and fight with him. “I don’t know what they’ll do to you if you jumped.”

He understands.

“You pushed me,” he agrees.

“It was an accident,” they build.

“The wind was too strong. I lost my footing.”

“And I pushed you too hard. We shouldn’t have been this close to the edge.”

“I forgive you.” Theta’s breathing stutters.

“You have a stupid amount of hair now,” they mumble. Koschei agrees. His head hurts so much, and he can’t place what’s worse: the drop after sudden regeneration, or the fresh bruises from hitting himself, or the drums, they’re louder now, he made them louder-

“It didn’t work,” he says a final time, no longer numb to it. His vision blurs, and his breath is coming one-two, three-four, one-two, three-four, stop it, stop it, stop it!

Theta touches his face, smearing his tears over his cheeks. They jam their forehead forward, close the distance until the entire universe is the two of them, alone.

He has to escape somehow. He grasps at Theta’s mind, not calm, always whirring and humming but quiet compared to his. He sinks into them with a sob.

They’re still there, in the back of his head, beating away.

He tries to pretend it’s only the sound of Theta’s hearts.

Maybe, for a moment, he even believes it.

His voice was soft and gentle, and irrationally, it made Steve angry. Such ugly news ought to be delivered in a more fitting tone. "The most likely cause is that your intended mate died before you were born or shortly after they were born, before the bond had time to fully form. It's called a Type C or a Type--"

Steve wasn't interested in the terminology. "Is that why I'm... like this?" He gestured down at his frail, sickly body.

"Probably," the doctor said. "There are some further tests we can give you, down at the hospital, to determine--"

"Why bother?" Steve growled, slumping back in his chair and crossing his arms. "My mate is dead and no one else is going to want me, not like this." Tears stung his eyes and he blinked them back furiously.

"It's also possible, though less likely, that you're a Type A -- firstborn of the pairing -- but that your mate has simply not yet been born," the doctor said.
