Happy August, y’all! Short and sweet today, I’m traveling and tossing this together in between family obligations. Today’s theme is

Silver fox/twink fics are one of my very favorite tropes--which if you’ve read my work at all, you know. So here’s some favorite age gap fics.

“Not really,” Steve says, voice raw and thick, as his eyes move quickly to Tony’s annular finger before returning to his lips.

Tony tilts his head and asks, in a tone that sounds more like a dare, “then what are you waiting for?”

Steve doesn’t actually answer; it’s Tony that makes an educated guess as he tries to grasp for air once Steve dips his head and drowns in his lips.

Or, Steve visits Tony after five years and it's not the salvation of the world he's after.

“Here, let me,” a low warm voice says, and Steve twists, gives ground to the omega that he hadn’t even noticed standing a step behind him, watches as deft fingers manage the lock, and push it open. And then hold it, waiting for Steve to stumble through.

He blinks, and looks up at his rescuer, and his breath punches out of him, at the faint smile and the warm whiskey eyes, the messy curls above a thin, tired face.

“C’mon, slugger, get inside before you pass out on the stoop.”

It’s teasing, but there’s an order there, and Steve almost trips himself, hurrying to obey.

Pythagorean Expectation by trickdaggers

Steve turns, feeling his heart fall out of his chest at the figure walking towards them. This has to be a dream. A nightmare— one that Steve has definitely had before.

Tony Stark walking towards them does not compute. Even with his eyes shrouded by orange-tinted spectacles, there is no mistaking that lopsided grin and casual strut onto the field even from a distance. Steve's head is swimming with questions. Tony holds so much notoriety right now that it would be near impossible to keep him transferring teams a secret, especially considering the team he would be leaving is owned by his own family.

(Aka, the fic in which Steve and Tony are rivals both off and on the baseball field— until they aren’t. And it’s also in the 90s, because why the hell not.)

Steve Rogers's football season is functionally over after a loss to Rutgers, but he finds a distraction in Tony Stark (yes, THAT Tony Stark). A college AU Stony fic.

His Fate Will Be Unlearned by scifigrl47 

Tony Stark spent his childhood making weapons, filling the hole his father left in the world when he succumbed to alcohol, grief, and his own demons. At the age of fifteen, he ran away from home, and made it as far as MIT before all of his responsibilities caught up to him. Now seventeen, he just wants to finish his degree and escape from everything connected to the Stark name.

Steve Rogers crashed into the icy North Atlantic in the 1940's, sacrificing himself to save the world. He never expected to wake up, and now that he has, he's not sure he's glad. The US Army has other plans for him, but for now, Steve is slowly learning to live life in the 21st century, and taking classes at Boston College. He's beginning to suspect that there is no escape.

Boston College is on the T's Green Line. MIT is on the Red. The two lines meet at the Park Street Station, and so will Steve and Tony.

Alright, so I think I fucked up yesterday and switched yesterday and today’s themse for @cap-ironman rec week? But!!! We’re going with it anyway, so. 

The theme is:

Aliens have invaded earth, and the Avengers are scattered. While Steve leads the resistance, Tony once again finds himself playing captive scientist. In the midst of a violent alien regime, separated by seemingly insurmountable boundaries, Steve and Tony have nothing to keep themselves going but each other.

I’m a sucker for podfic and this one is so well done with such an amazing cast of narrators who did a just fantastic job?? I loved it, and it kept me company for a holiday roadtrip. Highly recommend it. 

The Foodieverse by copperbadge, scifigrl47

It's an AU where everyone works in the food industry. That makes total sense and is definitely not wildly irrational on any axis.

This fic series is a comfort read for me, because the characterization is SO good and perfect and them even though the setting is so far from what we normal see. I adore it. 

In Trouble Deep by FestiveFerret, SirSapling

"Whoever did this has a reason, and Stark needs to be with someone who can protect him. He won’t exactly be able to protect himself like this.” Fury looked at the baby consideringly. “No, it’s you, Steve. Besides, he likes you. Suck it up, soldier, you’re stuck with him.”

This is a classic, and for a good reason. Ferret and SirSapling do such a good job with Steve’s POV and emotions and Tony, I just--it’s delightful. Read it. 

heartbreak prince by Areiton, meidui 

Tony breaks up with him on a Tuesday morning, three days before Steve is supposed to get in Bucky's pickup and drive to Boston College.

This is the second fic in a collaborative series about a college aged Steve and his high school teacher Tony and I LOVE IT SO MUCH.

Historian Tony Stark has one year to get his book about WWII weapons technology under contract before he goes up for Full Professor at Stanley College. There's only one chapter left to finish, which is supposed to explain Peggy Carter's involvement with something called "Project Rebirth," but there are two problems: his trail of evidence goes cold every time he encounters references to an enigmatic soldier named Steven Rogers, and his stress levels shoot through the roof every time he runs into the endlessly frustrating new hire in Fine Arts, Dr. Grant.

Look, this isn’t cheating, because there are a lot of people involved in this one. And I love it so much, both the fic which is a true collab and the podfic which is excellently done by cookiemom. Go read/listen to it.

In which Tony deals poorly with Steve's death, falls off the wagon, sees ghosts, and misses a lot.

Oh, and the Skrulls are about to invade.

Pretty sure this is a classic or something, because it was repeatedly recommend to me by folks who know I don’t read WIPs and honestly--they were right.

Steve ends up as a concubine in the royal harem.

Will I always read sabrecmc? Yes. Even the WIPs. No regrets.

I love Celestial Navigation so reading this was so so satisfying. Even if we never get another word, I will be completely happy with just this.

Tony needs someone who cares about him, bandages, a jacket, ibuprofen, dinner, a lasting romantic relationship, a nice time in bed, and assistance committing federal crimes. He gets them. In that order.

Did I know before I read this that I NEEDED Tony edging Steve until he came in his pants? No. But I did. I needed that. And it’s lovely. Also, like, the whole team fucking around with each other and watching each other that is alluded to? Needed that as well. See the above fic, guys, I’m not telling you anything new here. 

Olfactory Oddities by KandiSheek

Steve seems to have a sixth sense for Tony's boners. Tony is determined to figure out why.

I love this because it explores the serum’s effect on Steve and how that spills into their sex life. It’s also funny and sex SHOULD be funny sometimes!

Tony didn't mean to hire some super hot, young guy to take his clothes off for money -- honestly! He just wanted somebody to wash his cars! But accidents happen when you let your AI do the hiring for you, apparently.

Now the recent divorcee has an awkward apology to make. He also has as an invitation to subscribe to Steve's OnlyFans.

What he doesn't have is any clue what he should do in this situation.

It’s just. It’s got so many things I love. The semi-public sex. The toys and fucking machine. The hot young thing slutting it up for the older jaded Tony? Yeah, ok, it’s like it was made for me.

Works that defined Steve and Tony characterization for you

This is such a fun category so here’s my favs: 

Under God by isozyme

“Captain America represents the values of our country. The recent allegations about his sexuality are specious and designed to smear an American icon. Captain Rogers regularly attends the Church of Saint Agnes and invites the citizens of New York to attend worship with him this Sunday, April 14th. God bless America.”

Nobody was ever going to know. Steve would be a good husband, a good father, and he’d never give in to sin and touch another man.

But Steve makes two mistakes, one after the other: he leaves two words out of the Pledge of Allegiance, and he doesn’t notice a camera flash among the strobe lights of a dark club, because he’s dancing with his clumsy hands on Tony’s hips.

Now, you may or may not know this--I think anyone who’s zine I’ve ever written for picked up on it--but I ADORE UltsSteveTony. They’re so fucking dysfunctional and so utterly perfect. And for me, this fic, which can be a gutpunch, really captures the dysfunction of them, with Steve’s internalized homophobia and Tony’s self-loathing and how deeply he cares and how terrible he can be about showing it. I love how much they hurt each other in their way to each other, because it fits the personality of both of them in this verse SOOOOO much. 

The Twice-Told Tale by arysteia

For someone he'd hero-worshipped for so long, Steve Rogers in the flesh is a pretty big disappointment. For one thing, he keeps looking at Tony as though he reminds him of someone else, and even if he never says anything, Tony's pretty sure it's his father. A lifetime of not measuring up to Howard's expectations is more than enough, thank you very much, and he's certainly not going to make an effort to live up to any of Steve's. Steve's pretty clearly failed to live up to his expectations, in any case, and that's not hypocritical at all.

What’s this? Me, once again rec’ing this fic? Who is surprised? AND YET--one of the things that appeals to me about Stevetony is the way that even time itself can’t separate them--they’re destined for each other. Toss a little time travel on both sides into the mix and you have this fic and our boys loving each other so damn hard. I adore it. 

Code Icarus by FestiveFerret for MusicalLuna

Steve Rogers hates falling, but he hates being caught even more.

This fic’s characterization of Steve especially, but the dynamics between Steve and Tony as well is so perfect for their early MCU days that I just--I adore it and who they are in it. 

Homefront by copperbadge

Steve Rogers is a capable leader, a kind and cheerful man, a good friend, a strong role model, and a loyal soldier. He's also teetering on the edge of suicide.

I’ve talked about this fic before, but for me, it really encapsulates both Tony’s driving need to fix and help, and Steve’s grief and trauma from the war and leaving his time behind, and how they both struggle and are better together. It’s beautiful. 

More Than Skin Deep by Sineala

Tony can just about accept the fact that he and Steve were kidnapped and replaced by Skrulls for three months. But what he can't figure out is why none of the Avengers noticed. And what he really can't figure out is why none of their teammates will tell them what the Skrulls did while they were gone.

OK, so. Why was THIS the one Sineala fic I picked? (because picking just one was hard, you guys). As always, I love the version of Steve and Tony that Sine gives us--it feels like something I could read in a comic, if they were a little bit committed to the romance. But for this one, it’s the team. Because the way the Avengers views Steve and Tony is as telling as the characterization of Steve and Tony themselves, and the team’s immediate acceptance of their romance is just--so perfect and in character. I love it. So maybe this one is cheating a tiny bit? Seems like that might be a theme this week for me.

5. I think this is cheating because it IS canon and it's only Tony BUT I remain obsessed with @latelierderiot's art and the self-loathing Tony is always delicious.

SteveTony Weekly - July 20 - Established Relationship

HAPPY NOTE: tomorrow kicks of @cap-ironman rec week! I’ll be posting a handful of recs every day for the theme this week. So come back tomorrow for that!

Less happy note: guys, honestly--if you aren’t happy with the rec list, please keep it to yourself. I’m doing this out of love for the fandom and in my very minimal spare time. I’m gonna keep doing this as long as those two things last--but criticizing the rec list or the frequency an author appears on the list is not super needed. So let’s hold that. I’m always open to suggestions for fics or authors you love, if you don’t see them getting the love you think they deserve. Chances are I’m unaware of them and would like the rec. Ok? Ok. 

So today’s list and trope:

Today’s focus is on ESTABLISHED RELATIONSHIPS! I love watching our boys fall in love, the sweet give and take of will they won’t they, when we all know they will. But I also love when we’re past that--when they’re together and happy or--not happy, sometimes, sometimes still sorting through their shit and all that it means. So--here’s some of my favorites! 

May 3rd by nanasekei

“So,” Steve asks, his shy grin clearly nervous, and Tony takes a moment to forget the dinner and the flowers and the world at large to marvel at how insanely good he looks in a navy-blue three-piece suit, complete with an adorable bowtie. “What do you think?”

Tony swallows, steering his thoughts back from how fantastic that suit would look on his bedroom floor, and stares at Steve’s expectant face. “It’s… It’s perfect.” He says.

And it’s true. It’s perfect, it’s amazing, it’s... Tony has no idea what this is about.

Having a boyfriend with a superserum enhanced memory certainly makes for a lot of romantic special dates. Sometimes Tony finds it a bit hard to keep up.

Highest fall you'll ever grace by Anonymous 

“You’ll probably want these back,” Tony says at last, and it hurts almost physically to pull the dog tags over his head and offer them to Steve. But they never really belonged to Tony, did they?

Steve seems to hesitate for a second, but then he takes his dog tags with a weird expression. “Yeah,” he says. “They’re mine.”

The first thing he notices when he wakes is there’s a ring on Tony’s ring finger.

Oh, Steve thinks numbly. I missed my chance. Again.

With that thought in mind, he bursts into tears.

(In which Steve goes through a rollercoaster of emotions and thoughts, Tony tries to comfort, and Sam finds the whole thing both frustrating and hilarious.)

Love your blog, seriously. Am genuinely curious in asking though, will you ever do a weekly rec list that isn’t a cycle of the same ~15 authors? I love the fics you rec every week but I think most Stony shippers have read the entire catalog for the BNFs and are too overwhelmed by the sheer amount of other Stony fics on ao3 to really find non BNF gems. I don't really ascribe to BNF mindset. There's just authors. Sure some are well known in the fandom, but they're just fans like the rest of us. Hell, i rec my own fic for some trope lists and I sure as fuck am not a BNF.

I actually work really hard to avoid rec'ing the same fic more than once--this year there's a complicated spreadsheet tracking the author/title and trope so that I'm NOT rec'ing the same thing over and over. (It's why the counterpart series didn't make it on the series list, for example. Because that got rec'ed in May for superfamily.) It's not perfect because I'm one person and this is a hobby but I do try to limit how often I repeat an author as well--see the 616 list where I didn't exclusive list Sineala fic. BUT--

This is pulling from my reading habits. And while I read extensively (an average of 900 fics a year over the course of my time in the Stevetony fandom) I haven't read everything. I won't read everything because some of it isn't to my taste or the writing doesn't work for me. So I'm not going to rec those because this is reflecting fics I enjoy and RECOMMEND. Key word is recommend.

AO3 has a really amazing and literally award winning filtering system. When I want to find something new, I use it because there aren't a ton of Stevetony rec blogs floating around. That's actually literally the reason I started this one, and why I continue it despite--nope, hold that thought, we're circling back to it after

Yeah, if you're familiar with Stevetony at all, you're probably familiar with @sabrecmcstonyficrecs and @findingstony. @kandisheek did a daily rec list last year that has some good Stevetony fics on it as well, so you could check it.

But here's the circling back to it bit. I want to, as gently as I possibly can, ask if you know how entitled this question comes across? I'm a single parent. I'm a business owner who works 10-14 hour days. I homeschool my kids and I'm knee deep in a master's program. I write fic that folks want to see updated on a pretty regular basis and I am trying like hell to finish a book for publication before the world implodes--that last bit is doing nothing for my creativity and general mental well being. And I spend at the very bare minimum a hour--usually two or more--a week working on a rec list that gets a few likes, a few reblogs, and generally no feedback. For the past three (maybe longer?? idk if it's three or four) YEARS, I've been doing this and I've missed exactly one week, when I moved. There is literally YEARS of content to go through. And you're complaining I don't rec a wide enough pool of authors? Friend. Respectfully--if you're not happy with the rec blog, please be the change you want to see in fandom and start one. I'd LOVE a rec list I could look at that I'm not creating.

I know I sound grumpy and I'll be honest--I am. This is a labor of love for the fandom. I hope you find something new to read or rediscover a favorite you haven't in a while. But I am doing my best here and if that's not good enough, I can actually stop. I've got other things I could be doing. I consider it literally every month--dropping to once a month recs or stopping altogether. I don't, because of those reblogs and likes (my friends, I cherish those reblogs and likes)

So maybe--if there's an author you think I should read and rec--send that as an ask instead of a passive aggressive comment about BNFs and my limited reading pool. It's just. Not super appreciated or super necessary.

SteveTony Weekly - July 13 - Favorite Series

Happy weekend, friends! Today I’m sharing some of my favorite Stevetony series. I really love a story that follows along one continuum and lets us get to know that particular version of Steve and Tony over a course of several stories, really dig deep and live in their world. It takes a lot of plotting and worldbuilding from the author and investment from the reader and I just--love it. So here’s some favorite series. 

Pieces of Echoes by geekymoviemom

When weapons designer and SHIELD consultant Tony Stark and his son are kidnapped following a routine weapons demonstration, newly defrosted World War II hero Steve Rogers is sent to find them.

But what begins as just another mission, a way for Captain America to reintegrate back into society, quickly warps into something more as betrayals are discovered, harsh, long-buried truths are finally brought to light, and Tony and Steve come to realise that their biggest allies are each other.

This series is a bit of 800k in total, and focuses on if Tony were a parent before and throughout his journey as Ironman, if Steve had been part of his life in those early years--how would that play out. It’s delightful for family feels and long immersive reads. 

A Furious Vexation by Annie D (scaramouche)

Tony gets an intruder. A post-apocalypse AU.

This three-part series is so full of worldbuilding I ate it up with a fucking spoon. It’s a post-apocalyptic AU and Tony is extremely distrustful of Steve at first, and watching them work that out and Steve earn Tony’s trust and acceptance is just--so GOOOD! And bonus, there’s excellent Rhodey content!

Starting with In Trouble Deep, this is an amazing little series about Ults Steve taking care of Tony who has been turned into a baby and what happens when Tony reverts to his adult age and Steve loses his child. It’s sweet and heartbreaking and I can’t stand how much I love it.

The day Tony takes Steve home from the New York Army National Guard is the best day of his life.

This is a tidy little three fic series featuring a young military Steve and an older, besotted Tony who just wants so damn bad to take care of Steve. Happily, Steve wants to be taken care of. I think I’ve read this series like. An embarrassing number of times. It’s delightful. 

Tiny Spy Assassin Steve by copperbadge

An AU in which Steve Rogers was born into the modern day and never received the Serum, but managed to make it into SHIELD as a handpicked protege of senior field agent Abraham Erskine. Along with Phil Coulson, Clint Barton, Natasha Romanoff, Peggy Carter, and eventually Sam Wilson and Bucky Barnes, Steve still tries to make a difference.

Particularly in the life of Tony Stark, who picked up what he thought was an art student in a bar, and ended up dating one of SHIELD's top agents…

This series of six fics is exactly what it says on the tin. Steve being a badass and brilliant even without the serum and Tony being Tony. I’m extremely picky about what pre-serum Steve fic I read and enjoy and this is honestly, my personal favorite. 

The Foodieverse by copperbadge, scifigrl47

It's an AU where everyone works in the food industry. That makes total sense and is definitely not wildly irrational on any axis.

Spanning 23 fics and almost 170k, this is my comfort food. When I’m in a particularly bad mood, I come back to this series because it’s low stakes and high emotional return. I love how in character everyone is, despite the world they inhabit being the food service industry. It’s flawless. Go devour it.

This and it’s companion series, new americana, follows Steve Rogers who goes back in time after Endgame and marries Peggy--and then falls in love with college aged Tony. It’s a series where there are no good people making good choices, but there is a deep, almost obsessive love and I am shamelessly fond of it. In the companion series, new americana, Steve’s past collides with their future when Captain America is recovered from the ice and throws everything into a tizzy.

SteveTony Weekly - Week 24 - Favorite Authors

Tomorrow is my birthday, you guys! Which means this weekend I’m hanging out with my kids and reading some of my favorite things which ALSO means--y’all get a list of my favorite authors. This is by no means a complete list--I love too many folks to do a complete list of everyone, but here's some that always make me happy. Ready? :)

Sineala - Ok so I know everyone loves @sineala because of fucking course they do, have your READ their fic?? But also, I adore everything I’ve read by Sineala, and what I really truly love is how sineala weaves comic canon into the fics and also into the author notes, making it super accessible to the folks who haven’t read as much. I’ve learned as much about comic Stevetony from there as I have from reading comics, tbh. Sineala is especially amazing at soulmate aus (who doesn’t love slipping off the pages into your hands and never too late for love) but I’m also utterly enamored with the rare aus like straight on till morning and like a comet streaming on.

 Complicationstoo - what I love about complicationstoo is how gentle Steve and Tony are with each other. Every single fic (and there are many!!) ache with longing and pining and a quiet gentleness that I can’t get enough with. The fic read like a warm hug, from things like dust off your highest hopes and take me away to you, to low angst sports romance like ice prince. Highly highly recommend. 

meidui - so it’s no secret that I’m a huge fan of @meuidi’s work. From the first time I read her work in angels who sin to her soft homewrecker Steve in this love came back to me to the puppy love and gentle adoration of Tony in there are still beautiful things, what I love about meidui is that she is so soft with Steve. He’s treated gently but never in an out of character way, and that’s a hard line to straddle. 

sirona - I fell in love with sirona’s fic with their gorgeous look at Tony growing up with Steve as a figure in his world with party girls don’t get hurt and got hooked on their college au i wanna hold your hand. And I love with my whole heart is the sexy and gorgeous our rain-washed histories (don’t need to be told.)  Honestly, everything is so so well done. 

Sabrecmc - @sabrecmc writes so many fantastic AU’s and they’re so long and lovely--so easy to drop into and not surface until hours later or the next day, has happened, I def greeted morning from the wrong side the first time I read some of her work. Also, there’s just--celestial navigation and a higher form of war are just in a class all their own. And catching lighting in a bottle is so lovely, with the angst and the pining and the Howard’s bullshit--I love it. 

Copperbadge - Copperbadge writes just--really fantastically well. But they also nail characterization sooo well I can’t get over it. From the quiet desperation and angst of homefront to one of my favorite fem!Tony versions in Ironsides and the absolutely hysterical Reputation--I love every bit of their work.

SteveTony Weekly - Week 23 - 616

Tomorrow is June 16th, or 616 Day for those who celebrate. So this list is a day early, but here’s a list of my favorite 616 Stevetony fics. I had to limit myself to only two of Sineala’s fics because otherwise this list would just be a lot of that OR very very long, and then I couldn’t keep to the normal seven because THERE ARE SO MANY EXCELLENT FICS!!! 

I will admit that I have a huge soft spot for 616 Stevetony and fic, because they have so much history, good and bad, to play with. It’s complicated, messy, sweet, and heartbreaking.

Age of Ultron-based, but not entirely canon compliant. Written for the 2013 Cap-Iron Man Reverse Big Bang. Ultron has attacked, obliterating most of the world's superheroes and resistance in a matter of hours. The remaining heroes band together and share what strength they have to get through it, to survive, and defeat Ultron once and for all. Steve Rogers grieves in the wake of the disaster and the heroes' defeat, and no one knows if he will be able to provide the leadership they need--but Tony Stark isn't about to let him slip away that easily.

What happened to the days when he flew off the handle, unable to play well with others, a notorious wild card?

“God, don’t tell me I’m getting old and predictable,” he says, rubbing a hand over his forehead. And then, “Fuck.”

A mostly-comedic farce involving: 1 obedience spell, 2 pining Avengers, 1 long-suffering Sorcerer Supreme, and 1 single, extravagant Saint Patrick's Day float.

I'll Give You Gifts Until You Know My Name by Dr_Amuly 

Mr. Stark is an extravagant gift-giver: he has the money for it, after all. As Iron Man, Tony has the opportunity to gift Steve even more presents that, while less expensive, are more heartfelt. Having a secret identity means Tony gets to have his cake and eat it too when it comes to showering Steve with presents.

Until Steve starts developing feelings for his armored companion, and all the benefits of living a double life are turned on their head for Tony Stark.

In all fairness, Tony is on autopilot when this happens. He’s had a long, hard day, and it’s possible he hasn’t slept in several long, hard days. He’s already half-asleep on the couch and he’s relaxed and happy, which is a rarity on its’ own, and he’s comfortable enough to let his guard down and get his body to do all the work without switching his brain on.

That should’ve been enough of a warning sign, but apparently not: Tony stretches, says goodnight to his teammates and gets varied responses back, and then he kisses Steve.

He only realizes what he’s done after he’s started to lean back, opening his eyes to see Steve’s blown wide, staring at Tony with his lips gone slack and a tiny furrow between his eyebrows.

To Make Much of Time by Sineala 

When Iron Man rejects Steve's romantic advances, Steve is disappointed, but of course he understands -- Iron Man's secret identity is important. But when a portal opens and Tony Stark crashes into their midst from twelve years in the future, Steve starts to suspect that there are more secrets here than he can even begin to comprehend, and neither Iron Man nor Tony are providing any answers.

Thrust Issues by Sineala

A battle gone wrong leads Tony to the unexpected and pleasant discovery that Steve is much more well-endowed than he could ever have imagined. But when Tony learns that Steve has never actually been able to sleep with anyone because of his size, Tony does what any good friend would do: he offers to relieve Steve of his virginity. Personally. Tony's determined, Tony's methodical, and Tony has a plan. He's going to get Steve laid. Tony just needs to make sure Steve never finds out that Tony's in love with him.
