what’s a ship you like that most people don’t?

Wow, y'all are really going for the ship asks! Since I'm home sick from work today - again ugh - I guess I'll keep cranking out answers!

This one is so funny to me, because I honestly have a very hard time judging which ships are loved and which ones aren't, with the exception of a few that I love and happen to know are super popular - Percabeth in PJO, Merthur in Merlin, and Din/Luke in SW, for example. I really do tend to enjoy, or at least understand, most ships! Romantic and platonic! It's fun to think of the different ways that different ships bring out different aspects of different characters, and I enjoy playing around with those dynamics. Y'all might be surprised to know it, but I enjoy friendships/family/platonic relationships as much as I enjoy romantic ones! But here are a couple of specifically unusual loves, I guess?

So let's see... I don't know how people feel about Sally/Paul in PJO, but that is a ship that I absolutely adore? I love the idea of Sally having a stable, supportive, rolls-with-the-punches guy in her life, because I think she deserves that kind of peaceful normalcy. 😌

OH, this might be a good one. I don't have any idea how many people know the old Star Wars Expanded Universe these days (its called Legends now), but when I was a teenager I was a hard-core Luke/Mara shipper! I very much doubt that is a popular ship these days, because I've recently seen that a lot of folks headcanon Luke to be gay. I can totally get on board with him - and honestly everyone in the SW universes - being queer, but I see him as more bi/pan/whatever label makes him/you happy. And his dynamic with Mara is just the most perfect enemies to lovers story to ever exist, so I still love it very deeply, even now, and could still talk about it for hours! (I don't actually want to think about how much that ship has shaped my psyche, lol.)

THIS. IS. WONDERFUL ❤️❤️❤️ *creates bookmark with gusto* I LOVE that you dug into what it might have been like for Gwen while she was under that enchantment! It was so creative to have her past memories blurring with glimpses of the present during the enchantment. I *felt* her disorientation, and it *hurt*. I felt so bad for Gwen all over again! 😭😭😭 That aspect of this story could have been a fantastic standalone one-shot in its own right, but noooo, you raised the bar and KEPT GOING and made it even better!!! I love that you showed Gwen and Merlin staying friends after Gwen becomes queen, and I love how she confides in him and how he immediately drops everything to go look for the offending piece of jewelry. The bit about Arthur’s incredulity at Merlin’s method of testing the enchantment was a great dash of humor, and I love that you fleshed out the concept of the enchantment to be something the others could experience so that they could truly *know* that Gwen had been innocent. And don’t even get me started on how much I love Arthur’s “Forgive me.” I love how he doesn’t think twice about humbling himself in front of everyone because his focus is solely on Gwen, consumed by the urgency of doing the right, honorable, and loving thing in that moment. You write Arthur and Gwen’s relationship so beautifully. 💕 Well done; I hate you (/affectionate) for all these feels. 🥰🫂👏

As 2021 draws to a close I wanted to take the time to highlight some of my favorite fan fictions I have read this year and thank all the amazing authors who made this year better with their stories. Anyone who follows me knows I am multifandom af and a huge multi-shipper so this rec list will also be multifandom but I have tried to stick to only one fic per ship and only one ship per fandom or else this post could go on forever.

Percy Jackson

percabeth: Vivid by lesbabeths (nixy_stix) (3k words)

The Percy Jackson fandom is arguably my first fandom although I rarely read fanfics from it these days. That being said I was feeling in a percabeth mood a few months ago and came across this beautiful soulmate fic. It  roughly follows and stays pretty true to the plot of the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series and I love the way the author brought in the soulmate troupe while staying true to the characters and plot. Plus, who doesn’t love a fluffy percabeth fic every once and a while?

Newsies

javey: The Truth About The Stars by ArtemisRayne (120k words)

Ok so I am gonna start by saying this is definitely one of my favorite fics I read this year and its partly because I had no idea what to expect going into it and then it was just sooo good. The Truth About The Starts is a Javey and newsies fic but its set in a world inspired by Stardust by Neil Gamen and they way the author combines and interweaves the plots of Newsies and Stardust is amazing. There are parts the feel like both of those stories and other parts that are brand new which all create a great backdrop for the relationships between the characters that form. I fell in love with the portrayals of the characters and the way they were slotted into the world and of Stardust and highly recommend this fic for anyone who is a fan of both pieces of media.

Sherlock

johnlock: The Important Bit by @thehumantrampoline  (10k words)

So I don’t read a lot of Johnlock or Sherlock fics because as someone who is aro-ace I tend to avoid the fics that sexualize Sherlock who I firmly hc as aro-ace. That being said this fic is an amazing example of how to write a super fluffy qpr fic with just as much care between the characters as in seen in any romantic relationship. I absolutely adored how the author wrote the relationship between John and Sherlock and would 100% recommend it to anyone aro-ace or allo who wants to read more qpr fics.

Merlin

merthur: The Cracks in Our Foundation by @schweetheart (14k words)

Despite watching merlin years ago, I have only started to read fan fiction for merthur recently and this one is sooo good. The dynamic between Merlin and Arthur is so in character. The way the author writes about Arthur finding out about merlin’s magic is also super well done as I tend to be picky about how authors chose to have arthur react to finding out by this fic does it in a way that seems super in charcacter to arthur and shows how much he loves merlin. Ultimatly this fic is does a great job with all of the characters and their charcterizations and while it fixes some aspects of cannon (like the relationship between Arthur and and Morgana) it still feels very true to many of the best aspects of canon and the relationship between merlin and arthur as a result feels natural and so full of love.

Harry Potter

drarry: Far From the Tree by Aideomai (110k words)

Far from the tree is a fic that I had heard a lot about from the drarry fandom and had been on my to-read list for ages both because of the high praise it has received and my love for other fics written by aideomai. After finally reading it I have to say it does not disappoint. I have a soft spot for 8th year fics as those were some of the first drarry fics I read and while this is more definitely an 8th year fic, it is also so much more. The dynamic between Draco and Harry is amazing and their relationship with Harry’s children how magically arrived in the past is so fun to watch, plus it has time travel which is one of my absolute favorite tropes. While I could go on and on about this fic I will say that it was definitely my favorite drarry fics I read this year (and possibly ever) and is absolutely worth the hype it receives.

Psych

shassie: The Dah-Ling Store-It-Yourself by nixajane (43k words)

I love a good case fic, and shassie is such a great ship for case-fics by its nature of being a crime procedural. This fic does an amazing job of felling like an episode of Psych while working in the relationship between Lassiter and Shawn. The characterizations of all of the characters are spot on and the relationship between Shawn and Lassiter feels so authentic and true to their characters that you can’t help but to see how easily this fic could have been an episode of the show. While this fic is an older one (written in 2012) it is quite possibly my favorite shassie fic that I have read so far. 

MCU

sambucky: not an end, but (the start of all things) by @notcaycepollard (11k words)

2021 was really the year of new mcu content and while I have probably read a fan fiction for every major mcu ship (and quite a few rare pairs) after watching tfatws I fell in love with the idea of sam and bucky together. Their relationship in tfatws highlights everything that makes them a great ship and while this fic was actually written before tfatws came out it does a great job of showing the amazing character dynamics between sam and bucky that the show highlights. Set right after infinity war, this fic follows all the characters that got snapped away as the navigate the liminal plane of existence they have been banished to. The relationship between bucky and sam develops in such a natural way and I also love the inclusion of peter into their dynamic and the dysfunctional little family that forms between all the characters while they are waiting to be snapped back into existence. While a lot of the fics on this list are on the longer side, this is a short but super wholesome fic that I absolutely adore and recommend to those looking for a quick pre-endgame read about all our favorite characters who got snapped away.

The Witcher

yennisker (and geraskefer): lilacs and dandelions by @limerental (47k words)

Season 2 of the witcher has officially converted me into a yennisker shipper and the amount of yennisker fics I have read since the season came out is honestly a little concerning but oh well, what else am I supposed to do without school work to do? One of my favorite yennisker fics I have read was actually written pre-season 2. Following the events of s1e6 yennifer follows jaskeir down the mountain and the build a life together so by the time Geralt and Ciri show up after the season ends they are living an adorably domestic life together that confuses the hell out of geralt. While it is super amusing to see geralt unsettled by this new dynamic between yenn and jeraskier, it is just as great to watch those two fall in love and settle into the dynamic geralt finds them in. Told in a non-linear fashion, the story switches back and forth between the formation of yenn and jaskier’s relationship following the mountain and the present domestic life that geralt and ciri eventually fit into. While the fic is mostly yennisker it does eventually become a geraskefer fic and the author does an amazing job of showing the ways all 4 main characters fit so well together to form a dysfunctional but perfect little family.

geraskefer: the way the fire holds by theundiagnosable (35k words)

So I know I said there would only be one fic per fandom in this list but after writing this list up I read this amazing fic and couldn’t NOT include it because it was sooo good. I as I mentioned I am not a huge fan of AUs because what draws me to most ships is the way the characters exist meet and interact in canon. That being said this role reversal witcher fic was so good. The author switched the roles of the three main characters by making Yennifier a witcher, Jaskier a mage and Geralt a human himbo, but did so in a way that makes so much sense for the characters we know and love. I absolutely adored the relationships between the characters and in particular between Jaskier and Yennifer who still have so much of their usual character dynamic from canon (or at least the TV version) while still making sense for their new characters.

  While I was only able to highlight a handful of fics for the sake of posting this in time and not making this post too long I want to thank every single person who writes fanfiction, especially in the last few years. Yall have made these last few years soo much more barrable and while I hope next year is better for us all I sincerely hope yall keep writing because you fics bring so much light to the lives of so many. (P.S. to all the fic writers whose fics I left kudos on and not comments, I am sorry and I suck at leaving comments and my fandom goal for 2022 is definitely to get better at leaving comments so yall know how much I appreciate your amazing fics)

This Thing Called Free Will is a supernatural fic that never fails to make me cry tbh. Every single time. Gosh. I opened the fic to add the link and accidentally reread it and now I’m crying again. Fuck.

7. Name some incomplete fics that you wish were completed.

Cary, if I begin naming fics I wish were completed, I will never stop. My subscription list is over 50 wips. I want them all to be finished. Every single one. But okay if I had to name a fic I’m worried won’t be finished, it’d be On My Love because its so pretty, but it hasn’t been updated in a while.

8. Talk about the ships that you read.

Oh dear. Let’s see. *pulls out the bookmarks*

I’ve read over 700 fics in the Merlin fandom. 99% of those are merthur, but there’s a couple random pairings in there. So much merthur. I’ve read a little over 200 fics for destiel and around 200 for seblaine, which isn’t really a popular ship in the Glee fandom so it’s kinda hard to find fics I really like in it. But soooo many good fics yo. I’ve also read a bunch of drarry, johnlock, stucky, steggy, snowbaz (from Carry On by Rainbow Rowell), percabeth, and patrochilles (from The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller).

Oh and of course, victuuri, because that ship is the Cutest. Victuuri’s currently at around 200 too, but my reading list is. So long.

Does that kinda answer the question? I feel like its more like explain the ship, but oh well. 

27. Name a type of fic that you wish there was more of.

FANDOM AUS. I LOVE FANDOM AUS. GIVE ME ALL THE FANDOM AUS. I also really love outsider povs and anything involving social media really. 

Also ghosts. I love ghosts and immortals just because I’m an Angst Junkie.

23. Has fluff ever made you cry? What about angst?

In my memory, no, fluff has not made me cry. For angst, I usually don’t for some reason. Like I can read the angstiest major character death ones and not cry. Except This Thing Called Free Will. LSKJFLKSDJfl gosh that fic. It’s not even long but it just breaks my heart every. single. time. 

15. What makes you pick up a fic, what makes it sound interesting?

I am. Not sure. If I like the summary I guess? Sometimes its also if I saw a recommendation for it and the recommendation sounds like something I want to read. I also scour fic rec blogs for their tags for certain aus. Like for This Thing Called Free Will, I didn’t really read it for its summary, but because destielfanfics put it in their mcd tag and I’m a masochist. 

Honestly though, if a fic just has a trope I enjoy, I’ll pick it up, wherever I hear about that from. 

2. If you could request more of a certain type of fic, which would it be?

It kinda depends on the fandom tbh. I wouldn’t say no to fandom aus in any fandom because I am utterly obsessed with them. For Victuuri I’d love more outsider povs (like Phichit!! What a Pure Boy) or ghost ones (because I’m an angst child). Or just angst in general? I feel like I haven’t seen that much angst in this fandom. It’s such a pure and happy show and fandom, unlike some others (looking at you supernatural with your hella long collection of mcds).
