Any thoughts on Percy’s precision Romantic gestures? Like in HOO Annabeth says I love you first and often kisses him more, but Percy’s kiss in Blood of Olympus, is probably their most Romantic and steamiest. I don’t want to act like it’s Quality vs Quantity but I was wondering what you thought of Percy’s romantic timing, as there are a few times he really nails it.

Oooo, this is a very interesting question, my friend 🤔

Let's see. I'm not really sure what percentage of my thoughts are Canon vs. Headcanon (because that is already a thin, hard-to-see-and-harder-to-agree-on line), but here are some thoughts regardless!

Something I love about Percy's character in general is how all-in he is when it comes to things/people/places he cares about. I think you're right that a lot of his love for Annabeth tends to show up in pretty large ways - like falling into Tartarus with her, the kiss in Athens, or his plans for them in New Rome (already thinking of marriage, kids, adult life, wow!), etc. I, therefore, as a person who tries to work closely with canon, tend to write his feelings for her in a very similarly all-consuming way!

That being said, I really, really think that most of their relationship is full of much subtler moments of intimacy, ones that might feel smaller in the moment but add up to the same grandiose portrait of love that the larger gestures represent. I think CotG does a great job with that, because it's such a good mixture of 'Percy's love for Annabeth literally saves his life (again)' and 'here are 100 examples of times when he is thinking of her fondly/appreciating her/doing something for her in a little way that shows how important she is to him.'

In general, I think Percy is a very romantic person! His thoughts are constantly about her, so it makes sense that he would be able to very precisely read what it is she wants/needs from him, and be able to time his romantic moments with that in mind! I also think this innate knowledge of her lends itself to very sweet moments of spontaneity, and that those moments tend to be very passionate! But I do think he also cares enough about her to want to PLAN a future out for them, which says a lot coming from the 'ADHD poster boy of the year,' lol. His ambition is to live a long, happy, peaceful life with her and his loved ones, and that requires some element of planning, AND some element of spontaneity - best laid plans and all that, lol.

I'm not really sure if this is what you were going for, but the tldr is basically that I think Percy is absolutely such a romantic, and it's one of the things I love about him. 🥹

in honor of annabeth's birthday, here are a few of several instances throughout the books where her presence—sometimes physical—but mostly just the very thought of her in percy's mind saves him from hopelessness, impending doom, and himself. she has the unique ability to save his ass despite not being there. the very idea of her and the sheer amount of love he has for her and his relentless daydreaming about their future together keeps him afloat, quite literally at times, when he has every other reason to succumb to the forces trying to tear his life apart, to give into the anger and despair and death awaiting him at every corner. and all of this ties into how annabeth is the heart of pjo and the physical manifestation of hope and humanity in the series, but that's a separate ten page essay. in conclusion, no one does it like annabeth chase.

i think a lot about that one scene in botl where nico summons theseus and percy's surprised that he doesn't look all buff and strong - that he looks just like them, and not even older in age. he expects theseus to be prepared, to look experienced, but instead he gets someone who's a frightening image of the average demigod, and it's scary. it's a reminder of how things, no matter how shrouded in legend, haven't really changed. it's the same formula, the same pawns, and the same game.
