“ball” - Jegulus microfic - @into-the-jeggyverse - 305 words
Regulus is sitting on the couch with one foot tucked under him and James’ feet in his lap and he’s absentmindedly playing with the hem of James’ joggers. He’s reading a fascinating book Pandora got him about the interconnection between Greek philosophy and mythology; James is reading a magazine that Regulus has never heard of. Regulus is getting lost in the moment until he hears Sirius snickering from across the room, he tries to ignore it, but Sirius doesn’t stop.
“What?” Regulus looks up, annoyed.
“You guys are the literal embodiment of ‘you know how to ball, I know Aristotle’.” Sirius chuckles.
“Did you just compare us to a Taylor Swift lyric?” Regulus raises an eyebrow.
“I mean…” Sirius gestures between Regulus and James.
“You mean what?” Regulus narrows his eyes.
“What are you reading?” Sirius asks instead of answering.
Regulus reluctantly looks at his book about Greek philosophy then just glares at Sirius who cackles in response. “So? James is also reading?” Regulus tries to justify.
“James, what are you reading?” Sirius asks.
Regulus looks at James who’s trying very hard not to giggle when he says, “FourFourTwo.”
“I don’t even know what that is.”
“It’s my football magazine, love.” James tells him with a chuckle.
“Face it, Reggie. Your relationship is a walking, talking Taylor song.” Sirius leans back with a smug smile.
Before Regulus can respond, Barty and Evan walk in the living room and throw themselves on the other couch. “Hey, Sirius? You want to play video games with me and Ev?” Barty asks, unaware of the current conversation.
James and Sirius look at each other and burst out laughing.
“Oh, for fuck’s sake.” Regulus mumbles and rolls his eyes.
“What?” Barty looks between the three of them.
“It’s Taylor’s world, Barty. We’re just living in it.” Sirius tells him.
“Well, obviously.” Barty rolls his eyes.

Prompt 20 - Skiing
@wolfstarmicrofic December 20, word count 386
“Alright, Prongs, let her rip!” Sirius yelled excitedly as he grasped the end of the rope he’d tied to James’s Cleansweep and made sure the sticking charm he’d cast on his shoes to attach them to the skis he’d found at the back of the cupboard in Filch’s office last week and had been waiting for it to snow so he could try out broom skiing; a sport of his own invention. He bent his knees and he was off.
The skis cut through the banks of snow as James picked up a bit of speed. “WOOHOO!!!!” He screamed as James flew closer to the forbidden forest. “YES, PRONGS, FASTER, FASTER!!!!” This was such a thrill.
James turned his broom as they approached the tree line, and Sirius leaned with him, changing the direction of the skis towards the black lake.
They’d nearly finished their lap. He could see McGonagall waving her arms at him through her office window on the seventh floor. He took a hand off the rope and blew her a kiss. He turned his head forward again and saw he was at the wrong angle. “REMUS, MOVE!!!! He squealed, letting go of the rope and trying to stop himself, but it was too late, he was going too fast.
He crashed right into Remus, knocking the other boy off his feet in a flurry of snow and skis. “Shit, Remus, are you alright?” He gasped as he extracted his limbs from around Remus and tried to help him to his feet. Remus narrowed his eyes at him and got to his feet without Sirius’s help. He brushed the snow off his cloak.
“Show off,” Remus spat and stormed back up to the castle, limping slightly.
Sirius let out a sigh. He’d hoped showing off in front of Remus might impress him enough that when he asked him to go to Hogsmeade with him on a date, he might say yes. It was not looking good. This was the last time he listened to James. He’d been trying for years to get Evans to pay attention to him with stupid stunts like this. That’s when it hit him. He slapped his palm to his forehead. He’d been so stupid. All he needed to win Remus over was chocolate.
He wrenched the broken skis from his feet and followed Remus’s footprints back into the castle, making a pitstop by the kitchens before he hurried after Remus so he could apologise properly and ask him out. He had a really good feeling about this plan.

I'm sorry
but also
I think Remus is probably most sad about the way things turned out after he has begun staying with Sirius at Grimmauld Place.
Before that, Sirius is just a history. An idea. A thing that was. He can almost pretend none of it was ever real.
Part of him might have wished Sirius was dead, too, then it was final. Then it was over with properly, instead he was having to wait for news of either an escape (unlikely) or death (not exactly imminent). So he had to settle for knowing they were both still existing on the same world... but not.
But then he's out of prison, and he becomes a Thing again. But he's still a murderous thing, so it doesn't really matter does it?
Until... he isn't. It turns out that none of that was true. He's still Sirius.
Then things get harder, because it means that instead of the Hogwarts years not being real... the past twelve years were the lie, instead. And that's a lot to wrestle with.
But it doesn't matter really, because he's got a friend back and then he has to try and pretend the twelve years weren't real.
There's a patch of time where they're once again existing in the same planet, not seeing each other, but it's different this time. They can write, he knows the truth.
But it's still a bit odd, and he'll struggle to remember which version is the lie and which was the truth. It's times like these he wishes he'd never got into Hogwarts at all. The truth became a lie, and the lie became the truth, but then he can't see him anyway and it's almost like they weren't reunited at all. And that's when things do get harder.
Harder still when they move into Grimmauld Place. Because Sirius isn't happy. He's not got the fight in him that he had when he'd just left Azkaban, he's not got the joy in him that he had when he was 21, 17, 16, 11. He's lost, and he's never been lost before.
And that's hard. Because it's harder to be with someone you've missed for years and feel alone because they're not the same person, than it is to be forced to let them go because they've gone. It's harder being with someone when they're not quite there than if they were never there at all. Not least because there's nothing he can do about it, except go about his own work and then come back.
So... whilst there's no doubt that he'd have missed the days before 1981, I expect Remus missed the days Sirius was in prison too (not that he'd ever say it) because at least then he was sure of who Sirius was, and sure of where he was. Even if half of that was a lie. It was just easier when he didn't know that. Likewise, even when Sirius was on the run and he'll have missed him greatly... there was still that promise of an impending reunion. And the constantly looking over your shoulder because what if today is the day things are okay again... is more exhausting than not having something to hope for at all.
And then Sirius dies. And even if Harry never sees it or comments on it, he's beside himself. Of course he is.
But. A small part of him is relieved. Not because he's glad he's dead, not because he wanted him dead, but because... Sirius is free.
For the first time since 1981 Remus can stop waiting for him to come back.
"There's nothing you can do Harry... nothing... he's gone."
